III: Lucrecia Isabella Sanchez.
-"Miento si te digo que en ti no ando pensando quisiera saber lo que estás haciendo."-
For three weeks, Lucrecia had pretended to be the business woman that was working for a music label as head of finances. She had gotten this job just a couple of days before she had met Benito. Although she hated that it wasn't the job she had always wanted but at least it payed good and her parents had approved of it. Benito on the other hand had done any job El Saguaro had given him, except the one with lawyer Sanchez. He was working on it but it seemed a lot harder for him to get Lucrecia to meet up with him. He had texted her and she had responded sometimes.
"Lucrecia, don't you feel alone in this apartment all alone?" her mother asked, looking around the living room that wasn't filled with furniture yet. She had moved in just two days beforehand.
"No, Mom, I feel great." Lucrecia told her, opening one of the boxes with her stuff in it.
"It's so big. You really need someone to share all this space with." Mrs. Sanchez continued. Lu rolled her eyes, she was getting annoyed. It was always the same. Although she would've loved to say something, she kept her mouth shut and continued to open the box. Lucrecia knew that it was only a few more months until she could finally leave her family behind.
Lucrecia was exhausted, when she let herself fall onto her bed. Except for the kitchen and the bathroom, it was the only furniture in the apartment. She had ordered some Chinese food and while she was waiting, she put her laptop on one of the boxes. As she was looking for a movie on Netflix, her doorbell rang. She got up from her bed to walk over to the little screen that showed her who was at the door. Very much to her surprise, she saw Benito and not the delivery guy she was expecting.
"What the hell?" she asked herself, staring at the screen. Still confused, she pressed the door opener and unlocked her apartment door. While Benito was going up in the elevator, Lucrecia waited in the door frame. The elevator arrived on her floor and when the doors opened, she found Benito standing there with his hands in his pockets, leaning against the back wall. "Hola, Benito." she greeted him. He smiled at her and started walking towards her. "What are you doing here?" she asked as soon as he had reached her.
"I wanted to see you." he responded. Surprised by that, Lucrecia eyed him suspiciously, then she let him enter her apartment.
"Why exactly do you want to see me?" Lu asked, closing the door behind Benito. Benito hesitated with answering this question. He couldn't tell her the truth, so he had to come up with a plausible explanation.
"You're interesting, why wouldn't I?" he counter questioned. Lucrecia was surprised but felt flattered.
"Thanks, I guess." she answered, biting down a smile.
The first step of his plan was working just like he had imagined it. The only thing he didn't take into account was feelings. Feelings he barely ever had felt like genuine joy, happiness and relaxing but when he was with Lu, it was easy. At first, he had pretended to enjoying the days he spent with her, but after two months he actually did. Carlos had noticed a change in his behaviour. Benito was still the same hitman but he now had a soft spot and that was Lu. Although they didn't give it a title, her parents called him their son in law. He had met them and the more time he had spent with Lu, the longer he tried to find excuses for El Saguaro as to why Lu's mother was still alive. He knew if his boss found out that he had become soft, he would let him pay for it. All that didn't matter in that moment. Benito was sitting on Lucrecia's couch, watching her put together a TV stand. He had learned that she loved building furniture and that she loved doing it alone, so he let her. The way the sun made her skin glow fascinated him. The longer he looked at her, the more he realised how much she had affected him. A knock on the door, let him look away from her.
"Could you open it, please?" Lu asked absent minded.
"Of course, mi corazón." he replied, getting up. Corazón, he called her his heart because that's just what she was to him. The knocks got more aggressive. "Yeah, I'm coming." Benito shouted, trotting towards the door. When he opened it, his good mood faded. Carlos was holding onto the door frame with his right hand, while the left one was pressing a piece of blood drenched cloth onto his stomach.
"¿Qué coño te pasó?" Benito immediately asked. Lucrecia was too focused on her TV stand to hear him.
"A deal went wrong." Carlos moaned. He had gotten shot and the first person he know could help him was Benito, so he had come to the only place he knew Benito would be at. El Lobo immediately wrapped his arm around his friend to help him into the apartment. Carlos' painful moaning then finally caught Lu's attention.
"Oh my god! What happened to him?" she asked shocked. Neither of the men answered her question as Benito helped Carlos onto the couch. Without saying anything Benito rushed into the bathroom and came back with a first aid kid, some bandages, a tweezer and a bottle of disinfectant.
"What are you doing, Benito? We need to get him to a hospital!" Lucrecia said quickly.
"NO!" both man shouted in union. Confused she stared at them.
"Carlos, you got shot! We need to get this registered and find the person who did this." Lu continued.
"Oh, I know exactly who that was and we can't get the police involved." Carlos mumbled between painful grunts. In the meantime, Benito took one of the scissors from the first aid kid and cut Carlos' shirt open, so he could access the wound. Lucrecia stared at them and watched as Benito took the tweezers to get the bullet out. The painful groans made Lu flinch every now and then but she stayed in the room and even assisted Benito by handing him everything he needed. When he had finally pulled the bullet out, Lucrecia held a small bowl towards Benito who then dropped the small piece of metal into it.
"We need to stitch that." Carlos commented, looking down on himself. Immediately Lu jumped up, walked out of the room and came back with a needle and some plastic cord. She handed it to Benito and then watched as he stitched the wound.
An hour later, the living room had been cleaned and Carlos had been given some pain relievers.
"Would you like to explain why we had to do this on my couch?" Lucrecia asked, crossing her arms over her chest. Benito sighed, he had no excuse ready for this. He had told her that he was managing a nightclub - technically not a lie because he did, he had just not mentioned that this was not how he made money. Carlos and him exchanged a look.
"We have very... dangerous jobs, Lu." Benito carefully started.
"What kind of jobs?" she asked, sounding absolutely furious. Carlos avoided eye contact, when she looked at him. He was not going to explain it to her.
"The nightlife brings a lot of dangerous people into the club-" Benito continued.
"Cut the bullshit, Benito! I wanna know the truth.", Lucrecia cut him off.
"We're hitmen." Carlos blurted out, causing both of them to stare at him.
"Hitmen? As in you kill people for money?" Lu questioned in disbelief.
"Yeah..." Benito sighed.
"And who do you work for? Are you getting hired or how does that work?" she wanted to know.
"We get hired. Clients call our boss and tell him, who, how and when and then he sends one of us out to do get it done." Carlos gave back honestly.
"Did the target fight back today or why did you get shot?" Lucrecia asked, still fuming on the inside.
"No, that had nothing to do with being a hitman. We're somewhat bodyguards too." Benito responded. He was getting nervous and he didn't like it.
"For who? And don't say your boss, I wanna know who that is." Lu gave back. Before one of them answered, they looked at each other, then back to the woman standing in front of them.
"El Saguaro." Carlos said slowly. Lucrecia stared at him for a few seconds, shocked by what she had just heard. For some reason, Benito believed that she wasn't going to leave him. He had the feeling that Lu was shocked but at the same time fascinated.
