Chapter Two
Evee ditched her jeans for comfortable pajama bottoms and a white t-shirt and pushed her hair up into a messy knot. She honestly did not care how the doctor would see her today, she did not feel well and all she wanted to do was crawl back in bed. Her eyes felt tired as she made her way towards the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
She noticed Harry looking at her in concern from the sofa, he was still in some jeans and a t-shirt. "Want me to make you something to eat? I can make you a sandwich?"
"No, I'm not hungry but thank you anyways." She smiled, grabbing a glass from the cupboard and filling it with some still water. She heard the doorbell in the background and immediately Harry jumped up from the couch, their Beagle following him enthusiastically to see who was about to enter their home.
It didn't take long before Evee heard some muffled voices in the background and her eyes raised at the two men entering the living room. She watched Harry smile in concern as the doctor, Evee thought he was around his sixties, stood next to him, a friendly smile upon his face. She immediately placed the glass of water on the counter, watching how both men strolled towards her.
"Eveline, this is Doctor Evans. He's the family doctor. Doctor Evans, this is my wife, Eveline." Harry introduced them both.
"Your Royal Highness, it's a pleasure to meet you, although it is unfortunately under these circumstances." The doctor smiled at the blonde, knowing that she first had to offer her hand before he could shake it. The Duchess of Clarence and Avondale immediately did so and he placed his in hers. He noticed the weakened handshake.
"Yes, I have been feeling a little under the weather this last week and since we're going abroad after the weekend, I would like to be the old me again." Evee nodded her head at the doctor, noticing how he waited around for further instructions. "Do you want us to sit down? What do you prefer? The sofa?"
"What's most comfortable for you." The Doctor stated, smiling at the small blonde.
"The couch it is then." She smiled, watching how Harry turned around to follow his wife and the doctor.
"Tell me a little how and what you've been feeling." Doctor Evans gently requested, hoping he did not offend her. He knew she had a nursing degree.
For Evee, it was the first time in her life a doctor had tiptoed around her so gently. She was used to doctors snapping at her in the hospital. For a moment, she wondered what Doctor Chasey would think of her now. She remembered him probing her when Harry and her were fighting and it was all over the newspapers. "Tired. Very tired. I haven't eaten in a while, my stomach's quite heavy and I'm having cramps."
"And you're dizzy, right?" Harry nodded his head, sitting next to her in concern.
"Yes, but that's because I haven't eaten a lot. Just the low blood sugar, I think." Evee spoke, searching the doctor's eyes.
"Okay, I'm just going to take your blood pressure and listen to your heart." The doctor instructed. "I will run some blood tests as well because if you do have a bacterial infection, we will need the fitted antibiotics to get you better instantly." He spoke, eyeing the couple in front of him.
"Yes, yes of course." Evee smiled, pushing out her arm for the Doctor to apply the manual blood pressure gauge. "Are there any specific times you get sick?" The Doctor questioned the blonde.
"No, just overall I think. My stomach's very heavy." She answered, feeling the band tighten on her left arm. She knew she had to be quiet so the doctor would hear.
When he finally pushed the air out of the band, he took out his stethoscope. "Your blood pressure is too low, what do you normally have?"
"120 over 70, always." She mumbled.
"You have 90 over 60, this combined with your lack of food makes you dizzy. I do suggest you eat something tonight, maybe something light. Prepare some toast with some jam." The Doctor spoke, "I'm going to draw some blood just to be certain for the right medication."
Harry looked at the doctor in concern, "Will she be able to do the trip next week? We have a very tight schedule."
"I will let you know as soon as possible, Your Royal Highness, I will have the test results first thing in the morning and I will come by with the fitted medication." The doctor spoke, "I suggest this weekend you stay in bed and try to eat regularly."
"I told you you should have eat-" Their conversation was interrupted by the doorbell once again and Harry looked a little confused. "Are we expecting someone?"
Evee shrugged, "I don't think so."
"I'll be right back." Harry spoke, looking at the doctor taking out his blood drawing supplies. Evee could tell by the look on Harry's face that this was not his favourite part. When her husband left the room, she felt the doctor strap around the band above her elbow. He placed the tubes in the right order next to him.
"Your Royal Highness, my apologies for asking but is there a chance you might be pregnant?" He questioned lowly, making sure no one but the two of them heard.
Evee raised her eyebrows at him, "I-I think I had my period more than a month ago, I should expect it again soon. I don't think so. We've stopped birth control since the wedding and I know my body still needs to adjust to the lack of the pill."
"You think you had your menstruation?" The doctor questioned back, pulling out the needle.
"It wasn't as heavy as I usually have it. Just a couple of spots, but I thought it would change with the lack of birth control. I don't think I am, my breasts aren't sore, my scent is still the same. I don't feel any different apart from my dizziness and my heavy stomach." Evee explained, swallowing heavily when the doctor slowly nodded his head.
"Every woman reacts differently to a pregnancy. Spotting is very common in an early pregnancy. It would mean that the fertilized egg embedded in your uterus."
"Implantation bleeding." Evee whispered, still a little flustered.
"Yes, that's the right term. I'm not saying that you are, I'm just saying we need to look into that option so I will run tests for that too." The Doctor spoke, "A little sting." He warned when he pushed the needle into her vein.
The Duchess closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the sharp but quickly fading pain. The doctor carefully continued speaking in a lower voice, "Unfortunately, bleeding in early pregnancy can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. In this case, you would develop cramps. I'm not saying this to make you worried, I'm just stating the odds. There's still, of course, a chance you're just feeling a little under the weather and you did have your menstruation cycle. If you are pregnant, I want you to see a gynecologist as quickly as possible. This weekend, before you leave to go abroad." The doctor continued, "But let's just take it one step at the time. I will send these to the lab in all secrecy and they will run the test. Tomorrow I will come back with the results."
Evee was a little lost for words as she stared at the doctor who finally loosened the band around her arm and withdrew the needle. She bit her lip, taking a deep breath, "I- Could you, for now, keep this between the two of us? I don't want him to get his hopes up nor get him worried before I know it for sure." Evee responded.
"Of course, will His Royal Highness be here tomorrow?" The Doctor questioned, placing the tubes with the blood in a plastic bag.
"He has one last meeting between ten and eleven in the morning. If you could come over then..." She spoke lowly. She didn't want him to be worried, she knew Harry well enough that if the doctor might think there's a chance that she would be pregnant, he would lose his mind. If the doctor thought there might be a problem, he would go absolutely mental and she was not going to make him worried for something that wasn't even certain.
"I will try to be here by ten fifteen." The doctor spoke, placing a band aid on her the inside of her elbow.
"Thank you, doctor. I hope you understand that I don't want him to be worried for nothing."
"It is not my place to judge nor tell you how to inform your husband if my suspicions were to be true." He smiled friendly, "I do hope you get some rest tonight and try to eat something."
"I will try to." Evee smiled, watching how the doctor straightened his legs. She could hear muffled sounds coming from the hallway and when a certain young princess entered the room, chasing an all too enthusiastically Bennett, her worries immediately dropped. "Hey Charlotte."
"Aunt Evee!" She grinned, running towards the blonde sitting on the couch. "Sicky?"
"A little. Aunt Evee's not feeling very well. Where's your mummy?" Just when Evee spoke the words she noticed Harry's brother and her sister in law stepping into the living room, a laughing Harry and George following.
"Doctor Evans!" Catherine spoke, immediately shaking his hand. William followed quickly. "Everything alright with my sister in law, I hope?"
"I will run some tests to give you the proper answer tonight." The doctor smiled at the young family. "For now I can only prescribe some light food and a healthy dose of rest."
"I'm fine." Evee shrugged, watching Harry's concerned eyes. The kids were screaming around, running after the old Beagle.
"Let me just see you out, Doctor." Harry stated, watching how Doctor Evans nodded his head at the blonde who smiled kindly back at him.
When Harry and the medic left the room, she turned on a brave face, watching how Kate and William sat down in the sofa right across from her. "Do you want me to fetch you something to drink?" Evee questioned, looking at the couple.
"No! No! You need to rest!" Kate spoke, shaking her head fervently. "Sorry that we're just dropping by but we're leaving for Norfolk first thing in the morning and wanted to see you two before your trip to The Netherlands. We won't stay long."
"You will be... Alright, right?" William looked at his sister in law in concern. She looked awfully pale.
She noticed Harry stepping into the room, sitting next to her. "Of course. The doctor said I should just take some rest, drink a lot of water and eat properly and I should be the old me by Monday. He drew some blood, so he'll give me the proper antibiotics tomorrow if it's a bacterial infection."
"Maybe you should take a doctor along with you, just in case." William looked concerned at Harry.
"You think?" The Duke of Avondale and Clarence spoke, entirely ignoring his wife.
"I don't need a doctor along. If I have the right medication I will be fine by Monday. Stop worrying you two." Evee replied, "Plus they have doctors in Holland too, if things were to get tricky."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Harry mumbled, not wanting to tell her he preferred their own private doctors, just for the sake of the press. He knew she'd do a speech on how every doctor had made a confidential oath.
"Let's just see how I'm feeling by Monday, it's still two days away." Evee smiled encouraging. "Now since they won't take any drinks from me, get them something to drink, sweety."
"Let me help you." William spoke, standing up to follow his brother towards the kitchen.
Evee noticed Kate raising her eyebrow at her, holding back a smile. "Bacterial infection, you said?"
"Yes, Catherine, a bacterial infection. The doctor just drew some blood to know what kind of medication he had to give." The blonde mumbled, throwing her head back to the edge of the couch, closing her eyes for a minute to stop the dizziness.
"Dizzy?" Kate spoke.
"Very." Evee mumbled.
"I've had a bacterial infection a couple of months ago. Wasn't dizzy whatsoever." Kate answered shrugging, she watched how her sister in law opened one eye at her to look at the woman.
"Everyone reacts differently, of course." Evee replied, closing her eyes once again.
"Of course." Kate held back a grin, trying not to laugh at the blonde's acting skills.
