Chapter Twelve
"Are you excited to find out the gender tonight?" Chloe grinned, stepping into the kitchen of Nottingham Cottage. "God, I can't even believe you're having a baby. You got married before me AND you're having a baby before me."
"In all honesty, if you told me this would all be happening five years ago I would have laughed." Evee grinned, walking towards the fridge and opening it. "What do you want to drink?"
"I'd like some wine if you have some." Chloe replied. Evee threw her head over her shoulder and raised her eyebrows at the brunette sitting at her kitchen table.
"You're joking." She stated, looking at the godmother of her baby.
"Why would I be joking?" Chloe answered, looking confused.
"You know I can't drink." The blonde mumbled, turning her eyes towards the fridge once again and sighing. Her hands wrapped themselves around the magic bottle of Pinot Gris in annoyance.
"I know that and it's amazing. All for my wonderful godchild. Anyways, genders." Chloe snapped her fingers in front of the Duchess her face, ignoring the annoyance on Evee's face as she poured some wine into a glass and shifted it towards her old colleague.
"Harry thinks girl, I think boy." Evee shrugged, sipping from a bottle of water. "Can I sniff it?"
"Sniff what?" The brunette spoke confused.
"The pinot." Evee pointed at Chloe's glass.
"No you cannot sniff my glass of wine, you idiot." Chloe tried not to laugh but failed. "I personally think it will be a girl. I would love for it to be a girl."
"You just called a pregnant woman an idiot."
"Well you are, you can't drink nor sniff anything alcoholic in the upcoming 5 and a half months. If it's a girl Harry will lose his cool, it would be funny and you never were a girly girl so you would struggle as well." Chloe grinned, sipping again.
"If it's a girl then it doesn't mean she'll have to be a girly girl. She can still be a tomboy if she wants to be." Evee mumbled, unconsciously rubbing the small but evident bump on her stomach.
"She'll be royalty, she'll be a girly girl." Chloe pointed out, her hands wrapped around the glass of wine.
"She'll be my child and she can do whatever the hell she wants." Evee mumbled, already ignoring the protective streak inside her stomach.
"Have you spoken to Harry about nannies and stuff like that? You know the general rules of raising a child in an environment such as this?" Chloe's face turned serious as she looked at her best friend.
"Harry wants a nanny, of course. One who's always available and lives along with us and then another two extras." The blonde answered shortly, remembering their discussion from two days ago. He had told her that she would need someone by her side, she argued that normal mother had no one by their side either. Harry in reply spoke that she would not be a normal mother and that she would have to come to terms with that.
The case was rested by the fact that they would discuss this later on and stress wasn't good for the baby.
"And you don't want that..." Chloe stated carefully.
"I have worked in a hospital. I took care of sick children way before I even met Harry. I don't think he actually realizes that apart from being his wife, I'm also a child nurse. I studied for this, I can take care of my own child." Evee sighed, rubbing her temples. "I can't let them take everything away, I want to raise my child."
"Look Evee..." Chloe spoke carefully, she didn't want to rub a pregnant lady in the wrong way and definitely not Evee. "Harry... He knows all about this life. I'm sure, one hundred percent that he wants to raise his child, your child, as much on his own as possible as well. But... Whether or not you like it, you have married a prince. You are a duchess now. People will talk about this baby, they will write about it, they will want to photograph it. This baby of yours is famous even before its born. I'm sure Harry just wants her or him to be safe."
"Chlo-"
"Evee, you'll always be a nurse and I'm certain you can look after your own child, of course you can but you can still tell the nanny to take a break when you're home. Let him have the safety of his child. Like I said, you're a duchess now, not just a nurse."
Evee groaned, placing her head upon the cold marble kitchen island. "I'll try to adjust my opinion."
"Let him have two nannies. One general one and an extra one. For when you want to take a nap..." The corner of Chloe's mouth raised as she stared at her best friend's growing interest when she spoke the word 'nap'.
"Maybe for the naps." Evee mumbled.
"Always do it for the naps." Chloe smirked, raising her glass and sipping from the Pinot.
"I hate you, you know that." The blonde muttered, opening the lid of her water bottle.
"Sure, you do." It was alright, Chloe knew Evee didn't hate her. She was this royal baby's godmother for crying out loud.
Six hours later, one of the world's most famous couples entered the Lindo wing at St Mary's hospital. Excitement and curiosity had taken over their bodies as they nervously followed one of the staff members towards the doctor's office. Two familiar faces were waiting for them once again. Doctor Thorpe-Beeston and Doctor Alan Farthing looked nearly as excited as the couple in front of them. Both of them shook the couple's hands and waited for them to enter the office.
Evee grinned, placing her own summer jacket on one of the chairs. Doctor Thorpe-Beeston immediately started asking questions about the last weeks and their trip to Holland. The blonde held back the urge to roll her eyes at Harry's protective streak and his dramatic way of telling the tale of Anne Frank's house.
"You can understand how concerned I was, I made her stay in the bed the last day, wouldn't have it." Harry spoke, looking at the doctors in front of him and ignoring his wife a little.
"I was fine. Just a little light headed." Evee interrupted.
"Sweety, you nearly passed out." Harry spoke, covering her knee with his hand.
Doctor Thorpe spoke, "Well for one, it is good that you took the last day off. You need to rest more. This is your first pregnancy, I don't think you should overwork yourself. Have you had any other symptoms? Morning sickness? Tender breasts? Emotional instability?"
Evee almost gave Harry a warning glance when the doctor spoke out the words 'emotional instability' but decided against it, "The morning sickness has died down a little, thankfully. I get some... Mood swings yes, I can get a little cranky."
"That is perfectly normal. Your body is reacting to all these new levels of hormones. This is just the start though, there's a good chance it can get worse." Evee decided to ignore her husband's little cough right next to her. "But we're all excited to find out the gender right?" The doctor spoke enthusiastically.
"Yes! Very, very excited." Harry grinned, clapping his hands.
"Any bets?" The other doctor with the glasses spoke, looking at the happy couple in front of them.
"My husband thinks it will be a girl, I'm certain it's a boy." Evee beamed, standing up when the doctor also did.
He pointed at the gynaecological chair, "This will just be an external echo, lifting up your shirt will be more than enough this time."
Evee threw her legs upon the chair, lifted her light blue sweater to reveal a small baby bump. She still could not believe that their baby was inside of her stomach. There was something growing inside of her. She felt Harry take her hand in enthusiasm as their eyes met. He quickly placed a kiss upon her knuckles.
In that instant, she realized all the reasons why she married this man in the first place. The small crinkles around his fervent blue eyes, the way he looked at her like she was the best damn thing in the world. The way he took care of her these past weeks, even to the point where his ridiculous concerns annoyed her immensely, she knew he did it to protect her.
She knew he wanted to best for her and their baby.
Her thoughts were interrupted the chilling feeling of the emulsion being placed upon her body. She could feel the doctor move the device upon her skin as the couple's eyes were glued upon the screen.
"We have a heartbeat." The doctor spoke, silencing himself immediately when the loud pounding entered the room.
Evee couldn't help but bite her lip, trying not to grin in anticipation. Everything was alright, the baby was fine. Harry squeezed her hand once again in relieve.
"Let's see if I can find a clear image. The baby seems to be a little shy."
"Well he or she doesn't have that for me." Evee mumbled, trying not to laugh at the moving black spot on the screen.
"Or maybe it's a little stubborn." The doctor grinned, moving around the device once again.
"THAT it has from you." Harry laughed, feeling genuine happiness.
"Wish I could argue with you about that." The blonde chuckled.
"Right. We have a gender." The doctor spoke, holding the device still and taking some screenshots. "You want to know, right?"
"Yes." Harry nodded his head alongside his wife.
"And you sir, you thought it would be a girl and the Duchess thought it would be a boy." The doctor grinned, holding back the tension.
"Yes." Evee bit her lip.
"It seems that the Duchess is always right." The doctor grinned as the blonde threw her hands in the air and laughed at her husband.
"I knew it! I get to pick the name! I get to pick the name!" Evee laughed, pointing at her husband who seemed to be in a little shock.
"I'm going to have a son?" Harry questioned, looking at the doctor in amazement. He was seriously convinced he would have a daughter.
"Yes, you are expecting a little boy. Congratulations."
Evee laughed in contentment when her husband threw his arms around her neck, placing a kiss upon her forehead. "George is going to be so happy."
The Duchess noticed the doctors giving them their privacy. She closed her eyes for a moment, enjoying the warmth of his breath again her neck. "Are you happy?" She whispered.
"Extremely."
"You can start thinking about your list with names." Evee mumbled, smiling when Harry took a step back and placed a kiss upon her lips.
"Yes." He bit his lip, nodding his head. "I'm going to have a son. We're going to have a son. God, I hope he has your hair."
For all Evee cared, their child could come out of her with blue hair. She knew she would love him with all her heart either way.
