Chapter Sixteen
She had stared at that particular text message for twenty minutes until she locked her phone away and shrugged. She wasn't really sure how she had to feel about this. She wondered for a moment how he even got her number because the palace had given her a new phone ever since she became Duchess. He must've gotten her number through Jared...
She didn't mind that much. There had been times in the last couple of months where she briefly wondered how her former best buddy was. Of course, it didn't damper her mood in the slightest way. She was happy right now. An incredible husband and a baby on the way.
If it wasn't for the newspapers writing her every step of the way, she would even say her life was perfect.
So storing the message in the back of her phone is the only thing she did, until she was ready to reply or even show Harry. A few weeks had passed and August became September quickly. Her now slightly swollen feet wobbled themselves towards the front door of Frogmore house as she heard the doorbell ring. It wasn't her best day to be honest. The September air was way too hot for her liking and the baby had decided to use her blather as a squishy toy for the last week.
Her blood pressure was again, a little too low which made her dizzy. It didn't help that her husband seemed to think she was dying every time she stood up too quickly. Luckily, Evee managed to kick him out for a meeting today and apart from Bobby (whom kept a low profile in the other wing of the house, merely a phonecall away), she had the house to herself.
"Thank God, you're here." The blonde sighed, opening the door to reveal an excited brunette slightly jumping on her feet.
She laughed in return, "I thought you liked having the house to yourself?"
"I do, but I could use some girl talk. Catherine and Will are in Africa with the kids on holiday and Zara's in Greece and I just need someone to nag to." Evee mumbled, closing the door quickly to make sure the heat didn't enter the air-conditioned house.
"Your husband's not good enough for that?" Chloe raised her eyebrows, holding back laughter.
"Unfortunately he thinks I'm dying everytime I complain." Evee spoke, walking slowly towards kitchen.
"Lovely." The brunette quickly. "Let me say hello to my godchild, please."
Evee rolled her eyes, holding a grin and placing her arms in her sides. It was something the brunette did every time. The Duchess would never tell, but she thought it was actually really cute of Chloe to do so. It reminded Evee of Charlotte who would, still astonished, put her small head against her baby bump and whisper some words. "Go ahead."
"So many people would die to be in my place right now." Chloe grinned, placing both her hands on the Duchess her stomach. It was now starting to get uncomfortably large. "Hello littly boy in there. It's your godmother. The one you'll be seeing the most. "
"Chloe." Evee rolled her eyes, trying not to laugh.
"It's true, he's not going to see his other godmothers that much. They're foreign princesses. They live in other countries." Chloe argued, turning her eyes back towards the baby bump. "Anyways, I'm the responsible one. The one who always took care of your mother. If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't have been here at all."
"Chloe." The blonde warned once again.
"The truth!" The brunette shrugged, continuing. "Anyways, I love you and I can't wait to meet you. Don't come out too quickly, we want you all safe and sound... Preferably with a lot, a lot of sound. Just to annoy your parents a little bit."
"Okay- that's it, you're already turning my own child against me. Get up." Evee spoke, taking a step back to grab Chloe by the arm and uplifting her.
The nurse laughed in return, standing on her feet quickly, following the blonde towards the patio doors. The Duchess turned around, "It's better to sit here, there's some shadow." She pointed towards the outside lounge.
"It has been quite hot for the start of September." Chloe nodded, placing herself in the two seat.
"Tell me about it, I still have three months to go and I'm already feeling like I might deflate from the heat."
"So tell me, how are you feeling? It's getting closer, isn't it? Three months isn't that far away."
"I'm not sick anymore but I feel... Bloated and heavy. I think every boob of mine weights the double amount of the baby. " The blonde mumbled, not caring if Bobby heard. She could see him holding back laughter as he placed the cooled lemonade on the table. "Thank you Bobby."
"Anything else, Your Royal highness?" Evee cringed at the name-calling, she knew he only did this when they had company. She had cursed him over and over again, to just call her by her name. In the end, he did not do that, she had to settle for ma'am. Which she thought was still a lot better than your royal highness. She would never get used to that.
"No, thank you." The blonde turned towards her best friend sipping on her lemonade. "How was your date?"
Evee could immediately tell it went really well by the look on Chloe's face. "Well... I have a boyfriend now so it must have gone amazingly."
"You do?! Oh! I'm so happy for you." The blonde clapped in her hands laughing, "I think he's a real charmer! Good looks as well. Of course, you're a real catch."
"I would have never met him if it wasn't for you. He took me out on a cruise on the Thames. We had some champagne and some oysters. It was everything I could ask for and in the end, he kissed me underneath the moonlight."
"Oh boy, he really outdid himself." Evee grinned, thinking about the banker Chloe had met when she accompanied her to a charity polo match in Oxford two months ago. The Duchess thought he seemed to hold himself together really well and the more she asked for Anthony Abend's interests, the more she thought what a wonderful match he'd be for Chloe Jameson.
The man was slightly older than Chloe but Evee knew the brunette would never date someone younger than her. He was calm and collective. He held a familiar sort of warmth in his brown eyes, the same, genuine kind she had seen in her best friend's eyes. She introduced them both and quietly left them to figure it out on their own.
"He did! God, and he is so charming. Awfully loaded as well." Chloe giggled, throwing her hand in front of her mouth.
Evee rolled her eyes, trying to hold back laughter. "He can buy you all the Calvin Klein sweaters you want."
Chloe chuckled, "No, I'm just really happy. We get along well, I can listen to Anthony for hours on." The Duchess was sure her best friend could, everything that included numbers and other boring stuff did always interest her.
"I'm glad." Evee smiled, "Tell him I said hello."
"I will." The brunette nodded.
"Anyways, I actually need your advice on something." Evee nervously spoke, scratching the back of her head.
"Uh oh." Chloe squinted her eyes, pointing her fingers at the blonde accusingly. "There's something going on. I know that look."
"Well, look." Evee sighed, "I got this text message a few weeks ago."
"From?"
"Freddy."
"You're kidding me right?!" Chloe shockingly spoke, not believing it. "The nerve of that guy- let me see it." She grumbled, already taking Evee's phone out of her hands, reading the message aggressively. "He is unbelievable, isn't he? Why in god's name would he- wait, did you reply?! Please tell me you didn't reply."
"I didn't reply." The Duchess spoke, "Of course not."
"But you also didn't tell Harry." She pointed out, already knowing the answer by the look on the blonde's face.
"I just- I don't know what to do, okay? I got the invite for Jared's wedding last week and I'll probably be seeing him then."
"I got one as well." Chloe mumbled, "It's still far away, next summer. Are you going?"
"Of course I'm going." The Duchess replied, "It's Jared's wedding. I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Is Harry going?" Chloe raised her eyebrows.
"Normally, I think so. Unless he has some business to attend, I'm assuming he is." The blonde answered.
"You and I both know there will be tension." Chloe spoke, "They have never gotten along."
"I know that." Evee sighed, breathing heavily and placing her hands upon the swell of her stomach. "And I do not want to cause any drama at Jared's wedding, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself."
"I don't think Harry would actually do that. You guys are married now, the baby will already be nearly eight months old if everything goes well. It's different, you're both adults."
"What good would it do if I were to show him the message? It could only 'cause tension at Jared's wedding and between us. It wouldn't be useful for anything. Not for Jared, not for me and definitely not for Harry. I'm over it, Chloe. I am and I'm not willing to restart this little circle of despair with Freddy. And definitely not behind Harry's back." Evee answered truthfully.
"Just delete the message." Chloe nodded her head.
"You think so?" The blonde raised her eyebrows.
She noticed the brunette ticking away on her iPhone in front of her. A confused look covered her features as Chloe handed her cell phone back, "You never even got a message."
Evee's mouth opened a little as she stared at the blank page on her cellphone. The message plus the cell phone number had been deleted right in front of her.
Author's note: Sneaky Chloe Jameson eh? She'd do anything to keep Evee and Harry together. Good choice, yes or no? We'll have to see in time. Secrets are never a good thing. They don't make friends.
