Chapter Seven

Evee marched along the headnurse through the corridors of the Emma hospital in central Amsterdam. She ignored the clicking sounds of the photographers in the background, trying to capture every single moment. She hoped sincerely that the children wouldn't get scared of the big massive cameras. She was in her element really, she could speak to the children in their native language. Harry strolled behind her, talking to another nurse. He was casually wearing some brown pants and a tucked in blue shirt.

For once Evee wished she was the young blonde nurse in the scrubs, nervously scratching the back of her head as she stared at the royal couple. The head nurse and the head of the administration department had introduced Harry and her to the staff, shaking everybody's hand as they bowed their heads slightly at the both of them. "This is the NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit." An elder woman, who introduced herself as Carine, spoke. "We will have to ask you to wash your hands and disinfect them."

Evee smiled, taking off her jewellery, including her engagement ring and wedding band to wash her hands. She carefully gave both to Bobby, who lingered around behind her. "Of course."

The Duchess noticed that almost all of the cameras stayed behind, only two could enter the room alongside the couple . One of them was the professional photographer for Kensington Palace, whom travelled along on this trip, updating the world every day on their whereabouts. The blonde strolled next to her husband, both of them eyeing the many incubators.

"Neonatology and NICUs have greatly increased the survival of very low birth-weight and extremely premature infants. In the era before NICUs, infants of birth weight less than 1400 grams or 3 lb, usually about 30 weeks gestation, rarely survived." Carine smiled, informing the couple.  "Today, infants of 500 grams at 26 weeks have a fair chance of survival."

The headnurse introduced the staff towards the royal couple, "We have a very multidisciplinary staff. We have nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician assistants, resident physicians, respiratory therapists and dietitians."

"That's astonishing." Harry smiled, shaking everybody's hands. Evee noticed her husband's eyes wondering  towards the many incubators, she knew him well enough to see the slight hint of worry on his face. "Most of these babies are premature births, right?"

Evee listened intensely as one of the nurses, nodded her head, "Yes, but some of these babies are from higher-order multiple births."

"This must be very hard for the parents, not being able to touch your child in the way you want to." The blonde stood next to Harry, trying not to keep the best poker face as possible.

"The NICU environment provides challenges as well as benefits." The nurse replied to the Duchess. "Stressors for the infants can include continual light, a high level of noise, separation from their mothers, reduced physical contact, painful procedures, and interference with the opportunity to breastfeed."

Evee noticed a little baby in the background, she noticed the many wires and intubation tube. One of the staff members saw the couple looking at the baby and immediately interfered, "This little guy weighs 35 ounces, he's 32 weeks old now."

Harry stepped a little closer towards the incubator, leaning forward to eye the small creature inside of it. It was actually quite awake, trying to open his eyes at the couple staring down on him. His small hands waved, ignoring the many wires attached to it. "He's so tiny." Harry mumbled, still staring at the baby.

"Samuel has actually grown quite a bit already." The nurse smiled.

"His name is Samuel?" Harry questioned, looking at the older nurse.

"Yes." One of the older nurses nodded her head at the prince, "Do you want to touch him? It's completely safe, he's staring at you." The nurse grinned at the Duchess who kept her green eyes on the creature in front of her.

"Can I?" Evee questioned with concern, she didn't want to jeopardize the baby's health.

"Of course." The nurse opened one of the little windows for Evee, who carefully pushed her hand inside of the box, ignoring the clicks of the photographs behind her. She pushed her pinkie gently towards the baby's hands, careful not to harm him. "He's looking at me." Evee grinned, turning her head slightly towards Harry who smiled at the image in front of him.

"He seems to like you." Harry replied, watching how the baby wrapped his small hand around his wife's pinkie.

Evee beamed, turning back towards the baby. She tried to ignore her mother instinct driving her insane inside her stomach. There was a little human growing inside of her, just before Christmas she'd have her own baby's hand wrapped around her pinkie. She prayed to god everything would turn out alright. "The unit does kangaroo care as well?"

"Yes, we try to do it as much as possible." The older nurse spoke, "It is very important for the baby to have skin to skin contact, especially with his parents. It reduces the stress levels with the baby as well with the parents."

"I can imagine how hard it must be to not hold your own child after birth and not even being able to take the baby home." Harry commented, still eyeing his wife who was smiling down at the infant.

"There's a big psychological factor in it as well. We try to be there for the parents as much as possible, guiding them every step of the way. That's why skin to skin contact is so important."

"I can imagine so. This little guy doesn't seem to want to let me go." Evee smiled, feeling the small pressure on her pinkie.

"He's very fond of blondes. His mother's a blonde as well." The nurse grinned.

"Really?" Evee laughed, shaking her head. She felt the little boy release her finger and withdrew it from the box.

The visit to the Emma hospital was a great success. After the Neonatal Unit visit, Harry and her went to the paediatric department, to say hello to the children. Kensington Palace had arranged that the Duke and Duchess could give some presents to the kids and they seemed over the moon with their action figures, teddy bears and even Barbie dolls.

This was the actual place where Evee was in her element, she laughed and played with the kids, for once forgetting all about the cameras around them. The unit had even placed a table in the playroom for the Duke and Duchess to sit at alongside the children. There were Play-Doh sets and their tiny hands were making all sorts of the figures. "Wat ben jij aan het maken? (what are you making?)" Evee grinned at the little girl sitting next to her.

"Een hamburger." The girl replied, slapping a yellow piece of playdoh in between her palms. Evee could only guess this would be used as cheese.

"Ga je er ook augurken op doen?" (Are you going to put pickles on there?) Evee questioned, laughing when the girl scrunched her nose.

"Hou ik niet van. Wil je een stukje?" (I don't like those. There, I'm all finished, want a bite?)

Evee looked surprised, placing her hand on her heart. "Mag ik echt van je lekkere hamburger proeven?" (Can I really taste from your delicious hamburger?)

The girl nodded her head fervently, watching  the duchess in awe as she picked up the hamburger, pretending to bite into it. She fake chewed on it, closing her eyes for a minute. "This is really good."

The girl giggled, throwing her hand in front of her mouth. Evee noticed Harry grinning at her from across the table, she raised her eyebrows with a held back grin, ignoring the flashes, "Do you want a bite?"

"I'm already making ice cream." Harry shook his head, trying not to burst out laughing at his wife.

"Shame, it's delicious." The blonde shrugged, taking another fake bite. "Marie here is a very good cook."

"Ik zal nog een voor je maken!" (I'll make you another one.) The girl enthusiastically screamed, grabbing another piece of play-doh.

Evee couldn't help but smile at the girl sitting next to her. She looked so proud and the duchess hoped that for one moment, all of the child's worries disappeared. She didn't even care that it meant eating fake hamburgers in front of a couple of cameras.

Author's note: it's a little short, sorry about that but I thought this would be super cute. I can imagine Evee eating fake hamburgers on the KP instagram page and having a good laugh.
