Unlikely style
A/n: bitch I'm dying me and an Internet friend we're joking about drag stuff and she goes "What's the death note boys drag personas?" AND NOW I JUST HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT THIS BRO.
Prompt: you've always wondered why L knew so much about makeup and fashion. And one unlikely night you found out.
Late. As usual. The past few weeks you'd been getting back from police meetings rather late. So walking into taskforce at about midnight when everyone else was asleep was rather normal. So as usual you got yourself through security, and into taskforce ready to head right to bed.
Hanging your stuff on the coatrack, kicking off your shoes and beginning to walk upstairs to get to bed. Yawning you trudged sleepily down the hall ready for some good old sleep. The building was dark as the rest of the taskforce was fast asleep, so it was also very silent. But to your surprise a faint voice from upstairs made you jump.
"Ow- shit! Man I need to find a better way to pin this down..."
Was that L? Not a surprise he was awake this late but what the fuck is he doing with pins? Curiosity getting the better of you, you walked past your floor and up to his, hearing what sounded like a sewing machine through the walls. Was he making something? What on earth is he doing?
You and L have had a rather strange relationship over the last few months. It was very clear you both liked each other, but nothing was official yet.
When you reached his door, you noticed it was open a crack, probably why you could even hear him in the first place. Quietly you snuck up to door and peeked through the crack. He was sewing, from the angle he had it laid out it just looked like a sparkly blue chunk of fabric. But when he pulled it away from the machine it revealed a very glamorous dark blue dress, something you'd expect to see a movie star wear. Why did he have a dress? You had no idea. Maybe misa was getting him to fix something for her? But Misa barely ever wears blue... not to mention it looks too long for her, shes small, she'd trip on the ends.
He put it on a coat hanger and hung it on a hook on the wall. Taking a paper from his pocket, he unfolded it and held it up to the dress. On the paper was a drawing of said dress, on a model with long curly black hair and silver gloves going up past the elbows.
Was... was he a fashion designer or something?
"Alright... thats done. Now I gotta figure out what makeup would match this... maybe navy eyes and black lips? Hmm... or blue lips? Do I even have blue lipstick?"
You watched in confusion as he talked to himself, walking over to the desk and pushing the sewing machine aside. Opening a drawer he pulled out some makeup brushes, eyeshadow pallets ams lipsticks. As well as a bag full of other makeup. He also grabbed a small mirror and propped the drawing up against it.
He starred at the shades for a moment, thinking his decision over.
"Hmm... none of these really scream Lilly do they?"
He sighed, getting up to go look for a different pallet.
Lily? Who was that? You watched him, looked around the room. And then in a second it all became so clear when your eyes met something on top of the shelf. A wig. A black wig just like the one in the picture. You quietly gasped, not expecting this at all.
"L does drag?" You whispered to yourself, an amused smile on your face.
Lily, that must he the name of his drag persona or something. He seems to have a trend here with the L names. You watched him take out a second pallet, opening it back at his desk and scanning the shaded.
"Ooo hello heart of the sea, you look good" he mumbled to himself, dipping his finger into the shade and swatching it on the back of his hand.
He held it up to the light at an angle you could see it was deep metallic blue, very bright and shiny.
"Hello pigment, I'm using you. Oh, and I can add rhinestones under my eyes that'll work"
You felt like running in there and screaming about how cool this was, but you held back. Suddenly you felt a tap on your shoulder and you jumped out of damn skin, but managed to stay silent. You turned to see none other than Watari behind you.
"Jesus Christ man, Kira level heart attack mate" you whispered.
"I trust you won't mention any of this to the taskforce?" He asked.
That's right, drag isn't as accepted in japan.
"Oh yeah, I just didn't expect this from L of all people!"
He gestured for you to follow, so you did. Heading downstairs again you ended up in Wataris office watching him dig through some drawers.
"I think the fascination started at about 16. One day he had to go to a show for a case since the suspect was doing the reception at the venue. He was mesmerised, couldn't keep eyes off the queens. After that I didn't really hear anything about from him until I found lipsticks in his room. When I asked he said he liked the fact he could have a whole other persona and become a different person. And the big gowns. He liked them too. I didn't see anything wrong with it so I just let him go ahead. He's always liked things out of the ordinary. In fact I'm glad he does this, he's a lot more confident in drag" He explained, handing you an envelope.
You opened it and pulled out a bunch of photos. It was barely even recognisable as L the makeup and hair was so good. Photos from various drag conventions and festivals, all kinds of fancy outfits and hairstyles, but all following a theme.
The main colour palette was blue, silver and black. The hair was always black, sometimes with streaks or dyed sections. And he was always wearing the highest heels possible. That was probably why he was so well balanced and was able to sit the way he does for long periods of time.
"Woah he's good, I always wondered why he knew so much about hair and makeup..." you said.
You heard footsteps going down the stairs and looked in the doorway to find L holding two lipsticks, looking down at them. With the most extravagant glam eyeshadow you've ever seen.
"Hey Watari I need opinions, what matches better blue or bla- (Y/N) WHAT ARE-" he jumped.
Watari snickered at his reaction.
"I um- this isn't-"
"Dude why are you like the coolest person I know?" You said.
"What-"
"Like you're the worlds greatest detective, multilingual, know capoeira AND do drag? Talk about bloody talent man why are you literally so cool?"
"You... aren't weirded out?" He questioned.
"Nah this is cool. Plus I may or may not have wanted to see you in a dress for like months now because you'd look highkey cute"
He stood there for a second, processing what you just said.
"Don't worry, she won't tell" Watari added.
"Oh good. Light would probably grill me if he knew" L sighed.
You walked over, taking the two lipsticks and examining the colour, looking up at his eyes then at the lipsticks again.
"Black. Matches the undertones of the eyeshadow" You said.
He looked at the black again, nodding in agreement.
"Yeah you're right. Matches the hems on the dress too. Probably shouldn't have too much blue and go for a more even balance. Wait hold on- you seriously don't care?"
"L this just makes me like you more"
That was no lie. You'd always highkey loved the drag scene and this situation just made you fall even deeper in love. And you could tell from his smile that he was relived this wouldn't damage the unspoken love you both shared.
"That's... good. Thank you for not, I don't know- trying to crucify me" He said.
"Oh honey no I just want to tag long you your festivals and stuff now"
It was the he noticed what you were holding and immediately cringed, taking the photos off you.
"Oh come on! These are old my makeup is gross, why'd you show her these ones when last years dragcon look was my best? Did you SEE my wig that day?" He complained.
"Hey you have those photos not me" Watari replied.
L grabbed your arm, pulling you up the stairs.
"Come on, come see my good pictures not this outdated crap. Ugh my lipstick what was I thinking..."
Watari watched you both leave, laughing under his breath. Something told him that L would be the one in the dress at your future wedding. And you wouldn't even be mad.
