The lovers

A/n: if you find religion triggering for whatever reason, skip this one lol. I'm not religious but the mythology behind them all is very interesting. And it's no secret death note is littered with religious symbolism, so...

Hc: the sense of religion and belief after Kira arose shook the whole worlds ideas of a god. Even L's

A deck of tarot cards, that's what this case was like. Everyone had a role, a title.

If Light was the one playing god, he was the emperor. If Misa was the second Kira, she was the empress. The mysterious Shinigami hinted in the notes to L, was death. Quite literally. And L was justice. But there was more to L. Together you made up something, you made up the lovers.

This whole case was driven by a bored Shinigami and a guy with a god complex. The religious symbolism for every religion conceivable, any practice where a god was worshiped could be drawn back to kira. Symbolic of what he was doing, he was the judge, jury, and executioner. He was seen as a god, a new religion.

There were many gods, in many cultures, all with different forms, ideals, opinions. But Kira, he was the one that could actually exist. You never was one to judge someone's beliefs, even if you didn't agree with them. You were indifferent. L, he always thought the existence of a dietary was impossible until Kira showed up. He was sure that it was just a human with a complex and a power, but if someone could be worshiped like a god just for that... then who's to say gods, in a different form couldn't exist.

Gods, could be anyone. Cult leaders, people like Kira. Normal humans. And what about his power? Was that given by a higher being? A Shinigami as hinted? If that was the case, then gods did exist. Gods of death. Just not in the way everyone perceived gods.

Kira had made him re-think all his beliefs. While he definitely didn't agree with many religions, he didn't judge those who were part of it. He was sure that one singular higher being was impossible, but multiple? Well, Kira proved that it was possible. At least in his world.

And then you showed up. And challenged his beliefs again.

He was sure, you were a gift from Aphrodite. The goddess of love, pleasure, beauty. There was no way someone as perfect as you could ever fall for him, at least, that's how he thought. When you returned his feelings he was beyond confused and shocked. You, liked him? Why? What on earth possessed you to turn to him. In that moment he thought to himself.

'Aphrodite, if you're real, and out there, thank you for the girl you've placed in front of me'

Where is all this going? The religion talk? The symbolism? The gods? That was his question.

Kira... it was all his fault for making him question all this. Kira was proof some higher power existed, how else would a human gain that power? It's impossible in every sense of the word. Ever since the case started, he looked into mythology, every religion he could think of and history on them, the beliefs, the cults, the power. Trying to find some kind of link to Kira, not thinking it could be true, that Kira was a god. But alas, it in a way, was. Maybe Kira himself wasn't a god, he just had the power of one. But the name Kira had become one.

Cults, that's what his religion was. The bad kind. The kind that believe killing humans was ok. He understood religions that offered food, money, wine, flowers and crystals... but human lives? That wasn't a religion. It was a cult, a dangerous one.

Spread out I'm front of him was a deck of tarot cards, face down and lying on his desk. He looked down at them, deciding where to start.

"Since when were you into tarot readings?" You asked, walking your to the desk with your tea, and a cup for him.

"I'm not, I'm trying to become as educated in all religions, practices and mythology as I can. Kira is testing me here. I need to know the source of his power" he said.

Reaching out, he picked up a card, turning it over and placing it in front of him.

Justice.

"That's ironic" you said, reading the title of the card, an old fashioned artwork on it.

"What if Shinigami actually exist? That would suggest not one god, but multiple" he replied, hands hovering over the cards trying to pick another.

"Then we'd need to try and figure out a way to keep them out of our realm. If the Apple thing is true maybe we can just offer them apples every so often to keep them out"

"I don't think they care for us humans. It's just one rouge god who wanted some entertainment. And low and behold, Kira was chosen and became a god himself"

He picked up another card, flipping it over and placing it next to the first.

Death.

"Ironic, again. Maybe these cards are actually meaning something here" you said.

Picking a last card, he flipped it, placing it next to the other two.

The lovers.

"Ok that one is out of the trend we got going on here" you said.

"I wouldn't say so"

You gave L a confused look.

"There's two options. Kira and the second Kira's bond being lovers. Or us"

"Us?" You questioned.

"There's no way you showed you by chance. If this is all real... then Aphrodite was really on my side"

"I could say the same for you. Aphrodite picked a good one for me"

L sighed, fears turning over in his mind. It didn't seem that any kind of astrology, or witchcraft had any connection to Kira. But it was definitely symbolic to say the least.

"I think we can rule this kind of stuff out of the Kira equation. It doesn't seem to match up" L said, sliding all the cards back into a pile and tossing them back in the box.

"You don't know what to think about the existence of a god anymore do you?" You replied.

"No... I'm so lost"

You slid the second tea cup over to him and he gladly good it, taking a sip. You knew exactly how much sugar to put in to please him, so no complaints left his mouth.

"What if it's something that hasn't been discovered, or talked about yet?" You suggested.

"Then it just makes things harder, and all this research pointless"

He sighed, looking lost and ready to sleep for months to escape the stress of this ruthless case.

"Gods, if you really do exist... help me out here. Aphrodite, thank you for the absolute blessing that is (y/n)-"

You smiled at his worlds, lacing your fingers with his.

"-I appreciate it, but I need something else to work with here. If you all really do exist. How do I stop kira? More importantly... why aren't you stopping him yourself if you claim to love humans so much?"
