A/n: here's the annual birthday onehshot!

You'd gotten the text, everything was in place, everyone you knew was there, it was time for the best party you'd ever thrown.

It was L's birthday, also Halloween. You'd decided to plan him a surprise party since he never really had parties. He was at work most of the day and was on his way back. Little did he know that Watari wouldn't be driving him home, but to your nearest park where you'd set up the party.

Evening hit, the air was warm, your guests all in costumes and ready. Matt, Mello and Near were there. Some of the taskforce who'd mysteriously left work early were there, some of your childhood friends were there. You were dressed as a bat, with cute little wings and and ears.

The table had not only the cake you made, but tons of candy in Halloween bowls with balloons tied to them. A portable speaker hooked up to your laptop with a party playlist ready. Bottles of soft drinks and water sat by the paper plates and cups. This was going to be the best party ever. L usually wasn't one for parties, but he could never say no to something you planned. Especially if the people he actually cared about were there.

Not to mention there was candy. He'd do anything for candy.

Seeing the car pull up in the car park, you signalled for everyone to come over.

"Alright guys lets do this! Stay quiet!" You called out.

You watched Watari lead your blindfolded boyfriend over as you tried to keep everyone quiet.

"Shhh! Stop giggling Matt!" You whisper yelled.

"Sorry!" He giggled back, trying to be quiet.

Near stepped on Mellos foot to shut him up from laughing, everyone managing to stay quiet.

"Where are you taking me? Did (y/n) put you up to this?" L said.

"Maybe, just be patient you'll see" Watari replied.

He began to untie the blindfold and using your fingers, you counted down from three. And when he could see, you all struck, shouting in unison:

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

The loud noise making him jump slightly, he looked at all of you in a mix of shock, confusion and happiness.

"What? Wait- what!" He stammered.

You ran up to him and wrapped your arms around him, picking him up and spinning him around.

"Happy birthday spooky boy!" You laughed.

"Since when were you planning this?" He replied.

"A few months"

Putting him down, the others walked over to wish the detective a happy birthday. He was usually pretty serious, and monotonous. But this was different, he couldn't help but be happy that you went to all the trouble to spoil him like this. Giving each of his successors a hug, expressing that me missed them, he smiled. You'd even gotten the boys down, was there anyway you wouldn't do for him.

You picked up the costume you'd picked for him as well as a party hat.

"Everyone else is dressed up, you gotta as well!" You said, putting a pair of cat ears on his head along with the party hat.

You tied a tail around his waist and fastened a collar around his neck, making him a cute little black cat. The music played as everyone chatted and showered L with attention, making sure he birthday boy got the best.

"Man it must be so much fun having your birthday on Halloween" Matsuda said, watching with you as L and his successors played tug of war with some of the plastic party streamers.

"I know, especially for mister sugar addict. It's literally a holiday where you get to eat candy and dress up" you replied.

"You know, I don't think I've ever seen him so... happy before. He's always so cold at work"

"I have a special touch when it comes to birthdays"

You watched the boys fall back into the grass when the streamer snapped, reigning L victorious.

"I didn't think L would be the type to like kids too honestly" Matsuda added.

You'd told everyone else that they were family friends he used to babysit to hide the fact they were actually his successors.

"You'd be surprised. He usually can't stand them but those kids are in his good books" you replied.

"You don't go halfway do you (y/n)? I mean, you set all this up, made the cake, kept it secret all this time and bought him some pretty expensive stuff"

"Only the best for my man. Speaking of... HEY HUN!"

L turned his attention to you.

"Wanna open presents?"

"Yes!" He smiled.

Gathering around the free part of the table, it got to the time for present opening. You'd kept yours until last, letting go first.

Mello, Matt and Near has all chipped in to get him some candy from back in England and a new watch to replace his broken one. Matsuda has taken notice of L's love for fancy tea sets at work. He had so many cute little tea cups and saucers, there seemed to be a new one every day. So he got him a new set. Among other things he received lots of candy, a couple of frog related joke items and various other nice things he'd find use out of. And soon the last present left was yours.

Handing him the card first, he happily took it, and opened it, reading it over.

L,

Happy birthday baby! You're getting old? How does that feel? Well I guess I'm close behind so we're even. I could go on for years about you, but after plenty of previous birthday cards like that I'll keep this one a little shorter.

Words will never be able to describe how much I love you, you're the absolute light of my life. I don't know what I did to be blessed with an angel, but I'm glad I did. You never fail to make me smile, and I promise I'll do everything to make you smile for the rest of our lives. I love you more than anything, and I'll always be by your side.

Smiling and wrapping an arm around you, he gave you a warm hug.

"You're such a suck up" he giggled.

"I know, you deserve it" you replied.

"Thank you, I love you too"

You broke the hug, handing him the small box with a bow on top that contained his present. He carefully undid the bow and opened the box, looking down in awe at what must have cost tons.

"(Y/n)... you don't have to spend to much money on me..." he said.

"Yes I do! You deserve it. Besides, it wasn't THAT much"

Better not tell him it was $600...

Inside the box rested a silver chain, a charm containing an opal, his birthstone. And the phrase 'forever and always' in your unmistakable handwriting. Boys can wear jewellery too, so when you thought of something precious that he could keep with him, a necklace was what came to mind.

The charm itself would hang over the area his heart was, another strategic move by you. Taking it out of that box, you took it from him to clip around his neck. Doing exactly that, you fastened the chain around his neck making sure it wouldn't come off.

Entering another hug, he thanked you again.

"What did I do to deserve all this?" He asked.

"You existed. Now enough thanking me, and let's get to the cake"

He could definitely agree with cake. You lead him over to the cake you'd made and took the plastic bowl off the top, revealing a double layered strawberry shortcake with strawberry slices, whipped cream, icing sugar and mint leaves. You stuck the candles in and lit each one. It was pretty dark by now, so the candles lit up the area. Being in public, saying L's name was out of the question, but that didn't stop you from getting everyone to sing.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Ryuzaki! Happy birthday to you!"

"Now make a wish!" You said.

Followed by a series of hip-hip- hoorays and clapping, he blew out all the candles. He wouldn't say his wish, for it wouldn't come true otherwise, but you handed him the knife and let him cut into the cake.

The rest was pretty self explanatory. Everyone got cake, L took many slices. Everyone enjoyed the delicious cake as well as the candy that was still left.

After plenty more hours of music, laughing, screwing around, it got late. It was time to wrap things up. So you packed up your stuff, waved everyone off and got into the car to head home.

Mello, Matt and Near would be staying with you for a few days. And you could tell they were tried, practically falling asleep in the car. When you got home, you all helped unpack the car and put everything away, the boys going off to bed after a long day.

After a quick shower, you were about ready for bed too.

"So, enjoy yourself?" You asked.

L nodded, obviously sleepy.

"Yeah, thank you for everything" he replied.

"Anything for you"

Wrapping your arms around him and pulling him in for a kiss, he accepted, your lips connected and you shared the moment. It had been fun, and you already knew what you'd be doing next year.

"Well, it's late. We should probably get to bed" you said, breaking the kiss.

"We should-" he began, cut off by his impulse to yawn "you'll stay and cuddle right?"

"Of course I will"

"I love you (y/n), thanks for everything" he smiled.

"I love you too L, happy birthday"
