Show, tell and interview
A/n: random idea I JUST had and thought could be interesting.
Prompt: you sent your child to a normal school so she can have a good set of social skills, she knows how important it is to keep you and L a secret so she does. But she's given an assignment to do show and tell about her parents. So you and L have to come up with a cover story for her while keeping some truth to it.
"Alright (d/n) it's your turn" the teacher of the year three class said, telling your daughter to come up to the front.
She happily came up to the front, holding a picture of her parents. You and L, on your wedding day.
"Now, tell us about your parents"
"My mummy and daddy are soooo cool! My daddy is a police officer and my mummy helps him with police stuff too. Their names are Ryuzaki and Hanayo" (d/n) smiled, using your aliases as instructed.
She loved talking about her parents. She viewed you and L as superheroes.
"(D/n), is your family Japanese?" The teacher asked.
"My dad is half Japanese and half British and my mum is (ethnicity). But my dad can speak lots of languages so we talk in Japanese a lot and have been to Japan!"
If there's one thing your daughter liked, it was the Christmas trips to Japan. She loved spending the day with you in akihabara and harajuku. And seeing all the cherry blossoms and going to shrines.
"Does anyone else live with you?" The teacher asked.
"My grandpa is my next door neighbour! He adopted my dad when dad was very little and they all do police work together to catch the bad guys! And he comes with us to Japan every year!"
Watari knew that even if L was married and had a child, he still couldn't take care of himself to save his life. So he's always around. That's the thing about L, he can take care of others but not himself. That's why he has a foster dad, wife and daughter constantly telling him to get more sleep.
"Do you have any pets?" The teacher asked.
"Uh-Huh! We have a dog called Mochi! He's a terrier and loves to play. But daddy sometimes has to tell him off for stealing all my socks" (d/n) giggled.
The class sitting in front of her laughed at the socks thing too. Any child would find something like that entertaining. The teacher had always been interested in your family. It was Watari that dropped (d/n) off at school and she'd never actually seen you and L. She assumed it was because of your jobs starting early and finishing after school did. So she was quite interested in how this bright bubbly child grew up. She had insomnia written on her medical records and had very noticeable eyebags, not to mention pale skin. She always said she got that from her dad, but got her height and build from her mum.
She was very very smart for her age, she was very social with the people she trusted but was careful around those she didn't. She had an amazingly strong sense in justice too, I mean, her parents are cops. She probably would right?
So when the day ended early for parent teacher interviews, the teacher of your daughter was interested to meet her parents.
"(D/n), tell us more about your parents. When did they get married?" She asked.
"When mummy was 22 and daddy was 23. I was born three years later. They knew each other since they were kids, they grew up as best friends and fell in love! It's very cute, daddy really loved mummy and always gives her big hugs and hold hands... and he liked to steal her coats when he's cold" (d/n) smiled.
So you two are child hood sweethearts? Maybe that explains why it seems that love is so important in the family? (D/n) had always said you should always be nice to the people you love and give them lots of hugs.
"What's your favourite thing about your parents?" The teacher asked as a final question.
"I like that daddy will read me bedtime stories and let me have ice cream after mummy says no. And I like that mummy plays dress ups with me and lets me help her make cupcakes for daddy!" The young girl replied.
"Alright, does anyone have any questions for (d/n)?"
A student put their hand up.
"How did you convince your parents to let you get a dog? I want one!" The boy said.
"I don't know! They just took me to the shelter and we got a dog one day. But you can try asking very nicely, that will help!"
And with no further questions or comments, show and tell ended. The kids went back to their free time as the day was wrapping up. The teacher watched as your little girl coloured in her rainbow picture, she was a very interesting girl. She was always dressed very nicely, yet had hair too thick to brush properly. She was way ahead of her classmates academically, but was among the few that still called their parents mummy and daddy. She would sit normally in her seat but all curled up on the floor. She would eat her healthy snacks but was always the one that had an extra sugary treat in her lunchbox. Small things, it was the little behaviours that made her stand out.
She definitely loved her family as she'd talk about all the cool things they did, but never revealed too much. Like she was hiding something, nothing bad but something was definitely in the dark to the school.
When the bell rung for the end of the day, the kids exitedly packed their bags and ran out the door to meet their parents. The teacher has conveniently put your family as the first interview, so (d/n) was to go get her parents from the parking lot and bring them back to he classroom. And that's exactly what she did.
It was the first time the teacher had seen the girls parents and boy was the resemblance uncanny. The faster having the same thick, black, messy hair as the daughter. The same pale skin and eyebags and the unmistakable slouch. The mother having the same short genes compared to the husband, the same bodily build, and most notably the same eyes.
Your daughter led you and L into the classroom and exitedly began to talk about all the fun things she did in class that day. But the teacher had to cut her off for the interview to start.
"Hi, I'm Miss Samson, please take a seat" she said.
You sat at the desk opposite the teacher.
"Daddy! You're sitting normally?!" (D/n) exclaimed.
"It's the classroom rules isn't it? I don't want to get in trouble" he replied.
You laughed a little at the exchange.
"Hi, I'm Hanayo" you said, shaking the teachers hand.
"Ryuzaki, nice to finally meet you" L added.
"Nice to meet you both too, I'm sure working in law is quite time consuming so thank you for making the time for this"
"Wouldn't miss it, gotta see how the little lady is doing you know?" You said, ruffling your daughters hair.
The teacher opened her notes and began to read off them.
"Well you'd be pleased to know that she's the top of her class" Miss Samson said.
You playfully whacked L's arm.
"Wow I wonder where she gets that from?" You snarked.
L playfully scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"Just because I was top of the class in school doesn't mean anything. You're smart too" L replied.
"I figured it was a family thing. Parents working in law would probably make anyone quite smart seeing as it takes a lot to even get into police academy. The only thing she's lacking in is grammar. She's still mixing up full stops and commas, but at the rate she's going it'll be fixed rather soon. Lots of kids fall a little behind in grammar to being with. Other than that she's doing very well. Not the biggest fan of maths but she's still passing. She loved science, she's flying through that. Shes very good at English and is doing well in history. Her behaviour is probably the best in the class. She never shouts, never fights the other kids and will even try and dissolve fights"
"A strong sense in justice huh?" You said, looking over at L.
"Hey it's not just me she gets it from, you work in law too" L replied.
You smiled and shook your head, he just can't take a compliment can he?
"Well it's good to hear, she's been doing well with homework too. She doesn't complain that much and finishes it pretty quickly" you added.
"It shows. She also really enjoys art and reading time, and does very well with creative aspects"
"Now I wonder who that comes from, Miss 'I got bored and painted a mural on the bedroom wall" L sassed at you.
"Ok ok! I get it!" You laughed.
The teacher could now definitely see where your girl got her playfulness from. The two of her parents constantly poking lighthearted jokes at each other just had rubbed off on her.
"She mentioned there's Japanese in the household?"
"Oh yeah, we speak it bit at home. Ryuzaki knows tons of languages and doesn't have much to do with them so we thought we'd pass them down. We usually use Japanese manners as well as English ones to keep it alive in the family you know?" You replied.
"Well with that skill, when she's old enough for the language courses I think she could really excel in that"
L turned to his daughter.
"What do you think? Want to lean languages?" He asked.
"I want to learn all the languages you speak. All 6!" She smiled.
"Six? Wow" the teacher said, slightly shocked at the fathers smarts.
"Yeah, I had a bit too much free time during school" L replied.
Talking to you and L was really starting to make more sense as to where (d/n) behaviour, smarts and attitude came from. It was like a tiny carbon copy off her parents mixed into one.
"One last think I'll mention before (d/n) shows you the work she picked out. She has a few small odd behaviours, nothing alarming. But I thought I'd let you know just in case"
You and L have the teacher a confused look.
"Oh? Like what?" You asked.
"Well she really likes to put percentages on things. I'm surprised she even knows how to calculate them. And she refuses to sit cross legged on the floor, she always had to curl up..."
You looked over at L with a smirk, knowing she got it from him.
"Really? I didn't even notice I'm so used to that stuff. Yeah that's from me. It's just habit, I guess she picked it up" L laughed.
"That and she draws on every possible piece of paper she can, there'll never be a clean margin. She also quite likes to colour code her pencils"
This time L looked over at you.
"Oh yeah that's my thing, she picked up on that to I guess" you replied.
"Well, that's about it. If she keeps it up like this she'll pass the next few years with flying colours. (D/n) why don't you show mum and dad your work book?"
(D/n) exitedly got up and told you to follow her to her desk where she pulled out her work book and started to show you all the work she'd been doing. The teacher gave the three of you a look as she watched, there was something about your family... nothing bad, but something. She knew she'd never find out what it was, but she couldn't help but wonder.
(D/n) had a dad that was so... monotonously emotional? And a mum that was very... tiredly spontaneous? It was very clear where she got all her behaviours from. But Miss Samson couldn't help but feel the family was hiding something, something big.
"Well I think all this good work deserves an ice cream don't you think?" L said, running his hand through his daughters hair.
She smiled and cheerfully jumped about.
"YES PLEASE!" She exclaimed.
L picked up his daughter and you thanked the teacher for her time, said goodbye and left.
The teacher watched you leave, there was just something about that family of yours.
You got in the car, bucking (d/n) into her car seat and heading for the ice cream parlour.
"What are you smirking at?" L asked.
"She knew" you replied.
"Oh yeah she so knew"
"You think she knows you're L?" (D/n) asked.
"No. But she definitely knows there's something we're hiding"
"Definitely, I could see it. Just like all your past teachers. Every single one is interested in us" you added.
L looked into the rear view mirror, from the look on his little girls face, he could tell that she saw that in all her teachers too.
"What do you think (d/n), does keeping a big secret like that deserve an extra scoop on your ice cream?" L asked his daughter.
"YES PLEASE!"
