Reunited part 1
A/n: Au where L's parents weren't assholes who abandoned him? I think the fuck so. Also you guys really like dad L so here take this.
Prompt: years after a mishap that separated L from his parents he finds his mother again.
They were a vague memory, he didn't remember much of his childhood before Wammys. While his memories of sneaking around the halls of the orphanage to get cookies at night was something that stuck, the memories of his parents not so much.
The only thing that really stuck were scars he's had since before he even remembered. He vaguely knew what they looked like, he was so young when he went into foster care that it's all a bit of a blur. But he clearly remembered a feeling, the warmth of his mother's hug around his tiny body. That memory was bittersweet. The hug was nice, but the yelling in the background wasn't. He was aware his home life wasn't the best, and he clearly showed signs of trauma. His mind had blocked out so many memories and he flinched at any sudden moves, loud noises scared him and he found comfort in small confined spaces.
All he knew was his mum was good, his dad was bad. And one day he just... ended up at wammys. He didn't remember the events leading up to that at all, in his mind it's just being with his mum one second then at wammys the next. What happened in between or why it happened was a mystery to him.
One thing was for sure though, growing up without parents made him treasure the chance to be a parent himself. Hoping they'd never had to go through what he did. So when you handed him that positive test 3 years ago his whole worldview flipped on it's head.
And now, a bright, healthy girl was his own. Half him, half you.
"Hey L"
Turning away from the case file he was reading, he saw you walking up to him with the days mail.
"This is forwarded from wammys for you" you said, handing him he letter.
Confused, he opened the envelope and pulled the paper inside out. But before he could read it, out fell a photo. When he picked it up, his eyes were met with a worn out old photo of a young woman and a baby boy. Blue ink written at the bottom.
L Lawliets first birthday. 31/10.
He starred at it for a second, not believing his eyes. The baby was him? He barely recognised himself. Dressed in a tiny blue onesie with little boots on his feet, a small knitted beanie covered thick black hair. He held onto a teddy, one he still had. It looked a lot more fresh and new in the picture than it did now.
He was leaning against a woman's shoulder. One that looked oddly familiar. You looked over his shoulder, giggling at how small and tiny he was. But L's mind was racing. That meant the woman was his mother.
He quickly picked up the letter, unfolding it and reading it over.
My dear boy,
I'm so sorry that I had to give you up. But it was the only way I could ensure your safety. I would Mitch rather I take the pain your father caused us then you having to endure it. You were so small, so fragile. You'd be 23 now wouldn't you? It's hard to imagine my little boy all grown up when I last saw you at 4 years old. I swore to myself that when this whole mess was over I'd find you again, I didn't know it would take this long though... I'm truly sorry sweetheart. Once I found what orphanage you were sent too I immediately went to them, only to find all your records were well and truly hidden from the public eye. They said it was to ensure the safety of kids from abusive homes and I appreciate the lengths they went to to keep you safe so much. I hope you had a good time at wammys.
I heard it's for the smartest kids out there, but also for the most traumatised. I'm both proud you grew up to be so smart and feel so guilty you have to live with all this trauma. I don't know if you remember, but your father was horrible to us, I tried as hard as I could to keep him away from you. But being stuck in an abusive marriage and household made it so hard. So I had no choice but to have CPS take you from home me so you'd be safe. Finally I managed to get him behind bars. And maybe we can start fresh?
I added the photo so you know I'm serious, and I'm really your mother. I have a copy of your birth certificate too if you want extra confirmation. I truly hope we can reconnect
-mum.
Reading it over his shoulder you felt just as much shock as he did. Usually wammys would never give anyone information on their kids because of the successor program and L being the worlds greatest detective and all. But this lady must really be L's mum to be able to get to him.
"Honey..." you began.
"She's still alive..." he said.
"We always knew your home-life wasn't the best but now it make so much sense. Your mum was trying to protect you..."
He sat there, looking down at the photo, just letting it sink in.
"Are you going to meet her?"
"I mean... I have to. Right? She's my mum. I had no idea she was even still around..." he said.
You expected a situation like this would leave someone jumping with joy or in tears. But L just seemed so shocked he didn't know how to react.
"I'm married, I have a kid... she hasn't seen me since I was four. She had a daughter in law and a granddaughter and doesn't even know it..."
"I imagine she'd be happy, really proud of you"
He thought for a moment, you watched the gears turn in his head. You knew L, so you knew once it sank in properly you'll be sitting on the sofa with him as he cried into your shirt for hours.
"Yeah... I'm gonna contact her" he said.
The moment was broken by the all to familiar sound of tiny feet running down the hall, your daughter giggling as she rushed to the two of you excitedly.
"DADDY!"
Turning to face her, she rushed in the door with a piece of paper in her hands.
"What have you got there sweetheart?" He smiled.
"I draw mummy a picture so I drew one for you too!"
She climbed up into his lap and handed him the paper, he took it, unrolled it and was met with the colourful crayon drawing of a three year old rendition of him and his wife with their beloved daughter. Of course, being a three year old girl, you all lived in a princess castle with unicorns for pets but still, it was a family portrait nonetheless.
You watched him smile, you knew that smile. The genuine one he only ever did when he knew just how much he loved something. He does it to you, to Watari and to his little girl.
"You know what? You should be an artist. You can open art galleries and everyone around the world will come to see your pictures. You'll be the worlds greatest artist" he said, wrapping his arms around her.
Every damn time they interacted your heart never failed to melt. The little girl giggled, hugging her father back.
"Can it be in a castle?" She asked.
"Of course"
"With unicorns?"
"Well obviously it has to have unicorns it's a castle"
You snickered at the comment. He knew how to please his girl so well.
Her attention turned to the picture of L and his mother, she picked it up and gave it a quizzical look.
"Who's that?" She asked.
"That's my mum, and that's me"
"The baby is you?! But you're so tall!"
"I used to be very very small. Smaller than you"
You knew what was coming, the explanation that she'd have to start adding a new person to her family portraits. You exchanged a soft look with L.
"Tell you what guys, I'll make some snacks and you guys can talk about this for a bit ok?" You said.
"Thanks honey"
You leant down to reach L's lips and gave him a quick kiss before leaving him to have a long talk about his family with his daughter. You knew she'd be exited right have a grandmother. You were sure you'd have to do a lot of question answering about family trees later on, and you'd probably have to do a lot of emotional comforting to your crybaby of a husband later too. He didn't show it to anyone but you, but god he was such a sook.
But for now, you had to focus on hot chocolates. One with a normal mix. Two with an obscene amount of sugar.
