Reborn

A/n: I'm a sucker for afterlife AUs ok? This is very angsty so MARJOR TIGGER WARNING.

Promt: none for this one lol

Sitting at the grave of his lost loved one has become routine for him. Never in his life did he think this would happen, falling in love, getting married, and then loosing her to some dick who thought he was a god. Almost a year has past and the workers at the graveyard all knew of him. The husband who refused to move on, who sat at her grave every as the sun went down for hours. It was a sad sight to see, but oddly beautiful.

Her grave was out of the way, beneath a tree and covered in flowers. This visit was different for him though. Usually he'd sit and talk to you the second he got there but he was silent this time. He didn't speak until the sun went down.

"I talked to the boys... they said they'd avenge you. I didn't say why I asked them to join the case but they're taking over" he said.

As usual, there wasn't a response from the grave. But he was used to the silence. It didn't change how much it hurt though.

"I just wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, and Light had to go and take that away. If you're not here what's... even the point..."

He sighed, tears beginning to fall down his cheeks.

"I can't... I can't take this I CANT TAKE THIS!"

Heavy sobs shook his body. He'd already suffered through a childhood of abuse and being an orphan, and the one good thing that came if his life was ripped away from him by some ignorant asshole. Every bad thing stacked on top of each other and he couldn't bare the pain anymore.

He drew in a deep breath, reaching into his pockets.

"I'll see you soon... sweetheart"

Meanwhile, your cold body sat at the lake. Dead, but not quite. Yes you were dead, but it turns out there was an afterlife and you were very much alive in that sense. The afterlife was like a separate realm, on top of the realm of the living.

That's why people saw ghosts. Sometimes the realm of the dead and the realm of the living blur together for a couple seconds. You'd been bored and alone for so long. A whole year of just sitting around in the graveyard, occasionally talking to other dead people. The moon was bright, illuminating off the water. It was quiet, the sound of grasshoppers and frogs was all that could be heard. You wondered when something interesting would happen, there's more much to do when you're dead expect for the parties people held. But it wasn't really your scene.

The silence was suddenly broken by a loud banging sound. A gunshot. You jumped, almost falling off the log you were sitting on and into the lake.

"Jesus... what on earth?" You mumbled.

Turning back to the lake you picked up a rock and tossed it into the water, watching the water ripple. Other spirits could be seen across the lake minding their own business. Whatever that gunshot was you were sure the others back at the graveyard would investigate. You were content with killing your boredom by throwing stuff into the water.

You looked down at your reflection. Skin drained of colour, eyes red and sunken, barely any meat on your bones as you hadn't eaten in a year. You didn't have to anymore. Hair a mess, and apart from the few bruises you had from when you hit the ground when you collapsed and died, you were completely blemish-less. That's just was being dead did to you. Dangling your feet in the water and the ends of your dress getting wet, you didn't think anything of it. It's not like a dead person could feel the cold anymore anyway. You threw another rock into the river, sighing.

"(Y/N)!"

You turned to see the spirit of the person who had the grave next to yours rushing through the woods and up to the riverbank.

"What's going on?" You replied.

She rushed up to you, frantic and shocked.

"It's- your grave!" She said.

"What about my grave?"

"Someone shot themselves on top of it!"

"They what- that's what the bang was?" You asked.

You were suddenly hit with a dreadful realisation, there was only one person that would visit you so often, and only one person who would sink that far into depression over you.

"N-no... wait... what do they look like?" You asked.

"Uh, a boy, black hair... really pale and tired. Covered in blood from the wound"

"HOLY SHIT LAWLIET-" you exclaimed, leaping off the log and landing in the water, scrambling to your feet and rushing into the woods to get back to the graveyard.

Your grave mate followed, realising you definitely knew this person and this was serious. You ran faster than you thought you were able to, reaching the fence to the graveyard you climbed over it and jumped from the top, landing with a thud and scrambling up again. You ran through all the graves, weaving past the headstones until you saw your tree where your grave sat.

"LAWLIET!" You screeched, tears beginning to stream down your cheeks.

You jumped over a few headstone and finally reached your grave where you found the body of your husband lying on top of it, a pool of blood coming from his head. You saw a gun, but couldn't touch it as it was in the realm of the living.

You dropped to your knees, picking up his body and holding it close to you. He may not wake up in the realm of the living, but in the realm of the dead, he can.

"No... no why did you do that..." you sobbed.

Your grave mate rushed up behind you, stopping to catch her breath.

"You know him?" She asked.

"He's... He's my husband..." you replied.

Her eyes went wide, realising this was a suicide of a grief stricken lover.

"I'll get the grave keeper!" She said, rushing off.

The grave keeper, the first spirit to be buried in this grave yard kept everyone in the grave yard safe and was responsible for cleaning up messes and proving new spirits with a place to stay, wound treatment  and new clothes.

"L... wake up, I don't want to have to wait any more please wake up" you sobbed.

His blood dripped down your arm and stained four white dress. The gun as disappeared, the gap between living and dead closing.

Maybe it was your sobbing, or just the process I'd dying, but he started to move in your arms.

"L, sweetheart is me" you said.

You felt him grip onto your clothes tightly as the rest of his body still fell weak, you held him up in your arms.

"I'm sorry... I couldn't take it anymore" he managed to choke out.

"You're an idiot... you're such an idiot... you had your whole life ahead of you!" You sobbed.

"It wasn't worth living without you. My successors are continuing the case, I couldn't stand being without you and having to act like nothing was wrong then the man that took your life was sitting right next to me"

You felt his tears soak through your clothes on your shoulder, and you squeezed him tight, never wanting to let him go again. After what felt like an eternity in that hug, you broke it to look him in the eye. The side of his head stained red with his blood, his white shirt painted with it.

"You're so pale... guess now you're as pale as me" he joked, trying to cheer you up.

"You always did look like a corpse" you giggled.

"I'm sorry (y/n)"

"I understand... I just wish you lived a happier life"

"At least I'll get to spend the rest of eternity with you now"

Not caring about the blood, you put your malnourished hand on his cheek and felt the last of his body warmth slip away.

"I missed you" you said.

"I missed you too"

Leaning in, you pressed your lips to his. It almost felt like you were alive again. After a year of being lonely and dead, you finally had your baby back.

It wasn't the way you wanted to see him again, self inflicted gun shot wound to the head. But at least he was with you again. That cold dead kiss, was the most bittersweet you'd ever had.
