One last time
A/n: I never see fics set in the L change the world timeline. Let's change that.
There he sat, two young children crying in front of him and he had zero idea what to do. Ned never babysat before, he wasn't too fond of kids and now he was caught up in a case involving a terrorist group, had two kids to babysit... and only days left to live.
The door closed in the other room, meaning you were back.
"L what the fu-" you cut yourself off, realising they were kids.
"One was sent by K, one knew Watari" L stated.
"Wh- and you're just going to let them cry?"
"I don't know how to handle kids!"
"God you're useless sometimes"
You walked over to the kids, a girl and a boy. The boy significantly younger than the girl. You sat down next to them and put on your caring voice.
"Hey, hey. What's wrong?" You said.
The kids didn't even know what to say, it seems they were still confused.
"What's your names?"
The girl wiped her eyes and sniffed.
"Maki" she mumbled.
The boy didn't say anything, he didn't seem to understand you. He didn't look like he was from around here, and if he was sent by K there's a chance he doesn't speak English.
"Listen guys. L kind of sucks at being comforting. But I'm here, I'm (y/n) ok? I'm L's girlfriend so you can trust me. Maki, you knew Watari?"
"My dad did... he said if anything were to happen to him to try and find him..." she said, her voice breaking.
"Something bad has happened?"
She nodded, and you bought out your arms for a hug. She accepted, knowing you could be trusted. You turned to the boy and tried to communicate again.
"What's your name?"
He gave you a confused look.
"K sent you right? From Thailand?"
He seemed to understand the name of his home and nodded. He accepted your offer for a hug and now you'd successfully calmed the kids down.
"You should be taking notes L" you said.
"What's the point, the both of us only have 5 days maximum" he replied.
"We're stuck with them until the end of the case, so get used to this"
Breaking the hug you told the kids to wait while you talked to L, giving them something to draw on as entertainment. You had questions.
"How long have they been here?" You asked.
"The boy, since this morning. Maki only just showed up. Her had was working on the antidote and when blue ship broke in, he killed himself with the disease so he wouldn't have to give it up. Maki has part of the antidote and K sent boy over for... I don't know. Something to do with the antidote but all he says is the same numbers over and over..." L explained.
"Where's blue ship now?"
"No idea, but they're probably looking for Maki so they won't be far behind"
This wasn't good, getting kids caught up in a dangerous case was bad enough. But if that virus got out, it could lead to an epidemic.
"What are we going to do about the antidote? And getting blue ship arrested?" You asked.
"Well... I know someone that could help with the antidote. We can start there"
"Great. Well leave by tonight, start getting ready"
You got up to pack anything needed but when L didn't move you turned back to him.
"Come on"
"You... work so well with kids..." he said.
"Yeah, I have lots of younger cousins. Plus, us girls tend to know what to do" you replied.
"If only we had a little bit longer..."
"Why?"
"Because if we weren't dying... we could have had our own kids"
You were silent for a moment. L never seemed into the idea of kids... but now that you were both dying together, maybe it made him think about what could have been. All the things you'd be leaving behind. The chance of getting married, starting a family and growing old together was thrown away thanks to the Kira case. But at least, you were going to die together. Solving one last case and stopping one last disaster, then being able to have peace in each other's arms one final time.
"I know... but this is all the more reason to protect these kids, get them to wammys after this is all over and help the world one last time" you sighed.
"(Y/n)..."
You tilted your head, showing you were listening.
"I don't want to die..."
You pulled him into to it arms, savouring one of your last hugs. You hated seeing him so depressed, it was worse than your inevitable heart attack.
"I know... neither do I. But at least we're leaving together, right?" You whispered.
"I guess... I love you (y/n)" he replied.
"I love you too, Lawliet"
Sharing a sad but loving kiss, you drew it out. You wanted to live out your final moments with the one you loved so dearly. As did L, you both wanted to spend your final days together. If only this case never happened. But there was no changing the past, you had a terrorist to stop and two kids to get to safety. It will be the last thing you do as a couple, but at least it's something good for the world.
If only there was a loophole in the death note...
You gave him a sad smile, even if you were both terrified, you had to stay strong. For the sake of the world, those kids, each other.
"Alright, let's save the world one last time sweetheart..."
