Kiss and make up
A/n: just as the title sounds. Fight to make up oneshot. See if you can spot the reference to another oneshot of mine.
Prompt: none for this one.
"I know you don't mean that"
"You know what (y/n), I do, I really do"
You rolled your eyes, he was really going to be all stubborn wasn't he? Turning on your heels, you walked toward the door, grabbing your bag off the hook on the wall.
"I know you don't, when you have your head screwed back on you know where to find me" you scoffed.
Slamming the door behind you, you headed downstairs and out of HQ to go somewhere quiet. Probably the nature tail nearby. That was kind of embarrassing since it was in front of the whole taskforce that screaming match occurred. But he was in the wrong weather he wanted to admit it or not. You two barely ever argued, but all relationships will have ups and downs.
You turned the corner of the street toward the national park and the nature trail. You'd known L since Wammys. You lived close by, only a small woods separated you dads land. He was an undertaker and owned a graveyard. So you knew you desensitised to death, L being a curious kid in the world of law enforcement was numb to it as well. That's how you met.
Due to the both of you growing up having the woods as a play place, you'd always been drawn to it ever since. So the nature trail was the perfect place to get away from the noise and clear your head. It was only about a five minute walk into the trail when you went off the main path and found a nice spot to sit down and clear your mind. Opening your bag, you pulled out a botanical scrapbook your dad gave you when you moved out. Each place you went with L on cases you added some pressed flowers to it. That's why it was always with you, you never knew when a pretty flower will pop up.
You had kangaroo paw plants from Australia, wintergreen from America, jasmine from Italy and many more dried and pressed in the book and stuck in with tape.
You were in Japan, and it was the prefect opportunity to add a cherry blossom into it. You flipped to the page you marked out for Japan and measured with your fingers how big a branch clipping would fit. Visually it looked like 10 cm a page, prefect. Now all you had to do was find a Sakura tree.
Starting your walk further down the off road trail, you listened to the silence. A much nicer sound than yelling echoing through the taskforce building.
"Just Shut your mouth for two seconds (y/n)!"
Ironic, considering you were usually quiet.
"This is getting annoying just let me work!"
Says the one that complains about stress...
"You're only here because I am! You're not even doing anything for this case!"
Except for examining dead bodies as your father taught you when you were old enough. If it weren't for you, the case would have no details about the deaths of victims other than 'it was a heart attack'.
You knew he'd come to his senses. It sounded awful, but any child who grew up in a situation like he did when he was still in custody of his birth parents would grow up to be terrified of abandonment. You've learnt that on the rare occasion a fight happens, let him cool off and when he realises what happened later on, the fear of abandonment would kick in and he'd come to his senses. It happened every time. He's refuse to believe he was wrong, then he'd overthink and jump to the conclusion you'd leave him, which you never would. And he'll suddenly realise he was wrong and immediately try and fix things so you stayed. Then you'd have to baby him for a while to make him realise that you'd never leave him.
But you didn't mind this, he wasn't harming you in the long run. Sure maybe the words stung in the moment. But you knew he didn't mean them. Once he cooled off, and realised he was wrong, you'd happily cuddle him for days afterwards.
You stopped in your tracks, spotting exactly what you were looking for. A Sakura tree in full bloom.
"Bingo"
Walking to to it you quickly realised the blossoms were out of reach.
"Hmm... I wonder if my tree climbing skills are still there... I will get that damn branch..."
Meanwhile, back at taskforce, it was tense. It was quiet, no one had ever seen L get that angry and loud before. They didn't know what to do.
"It's been a while... where do you think (y/n) went?" Matsuda whispered to Aizawa.
"Dunno, she has her phone though. If anything happens she'll call. She probably went to a cafe to kill time or something" he replied.
L was still stressed and angry, he was right. In his mind he was. You were the one being pushy and treating him like a child. But now he couldn't focus on his work, he just sat there leaning on his elbows with his head resting on his hand angrily starring at the computer screen and keyboard he hadn't touched in 20 minutes.
"It seemed like she knew it'd blow over... has this happened before? I've never seen them argue before..." Matsuda said.
"She knows him the best out of all of us. She seems to understand it's coming from stress" Aizawa replied.
"Even though... he really shouldn't have said she's not doing anything on the case... that's really invalidating of all her work"
"Yeah, that was a dick move..."
"But... wow... I wasn't aware he could talk over a quiet volume" Matsuda added.
"Neither did I... he can really scream can't he? Guess anger does that to you"
Frustrated at not being able to get any work done, L looked over at the clock, wondering how much time he'd wasted.
6:30pm.
Pm... PM.
"Oh god..." he whispered to himself.
You were out, it was getting late. You'd been gone for at least 25 minutes now, it would be cold and dark soon. He had no idea were you were. It was all starting to set in.
"What have I just done..." he said.
You were right. He realised that now. He was just being stubborn and aggressive, and became of that he'd driven you out of the taskforce.
All at once the dread started to set in.
"She's going to leave me..." he mumbled.
"What?" Matsuda said, overhearing him.
"What have I done, she's going to leave me! Why do I always drive people away? Why am I like this? No no no!"
Getting up and running upstairs to find his phone, he smashed your number into the keys and listened to it ring.
"Hey this is (y/n), I'm probably out at the moment. Leave a message or forever hold your peace"
Voice mail.
"SHIT- L you're a fucking dumbass..." he hissed at himself, ready to go find you.
You were right, he did know exactly where you'd be. Trying to call you again, he listened to it ring out again as he stuffed his feet into his beaten up sneakers and headed back downstairs.
"Pick up, pick up..."
Straight to voice mail again. Either you were out on the trail like you said and out of signal. Or like his anxiety made him think, something bad happened.
"L where are you going?" Matsuda asked.
"To find her! If I don't fix this she's going to leave me just like everyone else did-"
"Woah hey, no. It's getting late"
"Isn't that more of a reason to go find her? What if-"
"L she has a phone she'll be fine. She's an adult woman in the police force she could snap someone's neck with her pinky fingers if she had to" Aizawa added.
"But-"
"She'll be fine. She'll come back"
"But what if she get hurt, what if she gets lost, what if she finds someone else and realises she's out of my league and I'm not worth it and find someone better?"
That last one made them silent, where did all this sudden insecurity come from? L tried to walk for the door again, but Aizawa stopped him.
"L. She's fine. She walked out for a reason, she'll be back on her own accord" he said.
"But..." L began, not able to find any words and sighed "why does everyone that's meant to love me run from me..? Am I really that... pathetic?"
The taskforce just looked at each other in confusion. Why was L suddenly so insecure? It was clear abandonment didn't sit right with him. He'd never shown this much emotion in front of them before, they didn't know what to do. They didn't know anything about L apart from the fact he liked candy, he was a detective and he had a girlfriend.
They didn't even know his real name, how could they know how to deal with him like this?
"So you admit your wrong?" Aizawa asked.
"Yes! Now let me find her-"
"L you're overreacting"
"IM NOT! EVERYONE ELSE LEFT ME SO WHY WOULDN'T SHE?"
It fell silent again. They watched in a mix of shock and confusion as L turned and ran back upstairs, drawing a shaky breath not letting himself cry in front of the taskforce. They heard a door slam and all exchanged awkward glances. They knew when this blew over they probably shouldn't bring it up.
"I'll talk to him" Mr Yagami said.
"Cheif are you are that's a good idea?" Matsuda asked.
"I have two kids, I know exactly what that behaviour means"
They watched him walk upstairs after him. They always assumed Watari was his dad figure, but he was out getting L's ridiculous cake orders for the next week. So he wasn't around to help out. But it was probably best that if anyone tries to talk to him, a parent who knows about this behaviour does.
"Jeez... what happened to him to make him so insecure?" Matsuda asked.
"If I had to guess, no good parents" Aizawa said.
"Maybe... we should go find (y/n), if she'd mad L going to find her would only make things worse. If it's us and she's mad maybe she'll talk"
"Yeah... maybe"
L's comment on being childish was really showing. The sounds of muffled sobbing behind the door reminded him of when he'd go away for work when Light and Sayu were little and they'd get all scared he wouldn't come back. Just it was coming from a clearly damaged 25 year old this time.
"L, come on we can sort this out" he said.
L didn't reply. So he just opened the door and found him cursed up under a blanket on the sofa, hiding his face from everything. Cheif Yagami sighed, sitting at the free end of the sofa.
"I have two kids, I can tell this is abandonment issues. Light and Sayu used to get terrified I wouldn't come back from work when they were little. You can't try and hide this from me" he said.
It was silent for a moment, but L spoke up from under the blanket in a shaky voice.
"Don't you hate me?" He asked.
"Why?"
"Because I think your kid is a mass murder"
"I may not agree with some of the things you do but I'm a dad. You're still a child L, you may be 25 but my god, you're the most childish 25 year old I've seen. And no child should be that insecure"
"What does my relationship matter to you?" L said.
"It's a good one. If you can find someone willing to put up with your insufferable percentage addiction, your wild tendencies in cases and awful puns, you've found a wife" cheif Yagami replied.
L didn't reply, if even the father of his main suspect can show sympathy maybe the taskforce didn't hate him as much as he thought. Expect Matsuda and Aizawa... he was sure they hated him.
"Now are you going to explain yourself?"
"That's confidential information" L said.
"Yeah yeah, you're real allusive. I get it. I never said I need your life story. Just the problem"
"... it's obvious isn't it? I just draw the people that should love me away. I always have. If my own parents didn't even love me then why would someone out of my league. She probably just pity's me. She saw that boy in her dads graveyard chasing a cat by himself and thought 'wow, that's pathetically sad' and because she's nice she just let me stick around. She probably doesn't even love me, and I've gone and made her run off just like everyone else"
Sometimes Mr Yagami wondered how this man was the worlds greatest detective. For someone so smart, he could be dumb as fuck sometimes.
"L, are you hearing yourself? She doesn't love you? I watched her give you a literal bouquet of strawberries last week. Not only is that expensive, there was no occasion. She just did it because she knew you liked strawberries. Do you really think she'd follow you around on all these cases if she didn't love you?"
L stayed silent, realising he wouldn't win that argument and that yet again he was wrong.
"You clearly didn't get hugged as a child..."
"Gee thanks for pointing that out..." L replied, unamused.
"She's not going to leave you, she left the building because she was worked up. She even said that she knows you didn't mean it"
"You shouldn't be treating me like your son right now. You have a real one, Light will be mad at both me and you" L said.
"He doesn't need to know about this. You clearly never got a dad pep talk to I'm giving it to you now. L, she does love you. She won't leave you. No, you shouldn't have gone off at her, but she herself said she knows you didn't mean it. Now are we going to probably talk about this or not?"
It was silent again for a moment, but L saw this as an opportunity to vent to an actual married man that probably knows more about love than he does. As long as he didn't reveal too much about himself, he'd be fine. He sat up, keeping the blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
"I don't know why you're doing this... but... fine"
Meanwhile you were walking back in the direction of taskforce with your cherry blooms branch, a few other flowers and a bands of on your cheek. Turns out you could still climb a tree... just you weren't that good at getting down...
"Damn I almost don't wanna press this... it's too pretty. But I guess it'd lose its colour if I don't dry and press it..." you mumbled to yourself, looking down at the flowers.
Suddenly a pair of headlights blinded you, making you react by putting your arm up to block the light.
"(Y/n)"
Aizawa? What?
You looked up, shielding the light from your eyes and found Matsuda and L in an unmarked police car.
"What the fuck are you guys doing? If we're getting Thai for dinner again give me like 2 minutes to think of an order" you said.
"No but that's a good idea. Maybe we can get delivery later. Get in, come fix your boyfriend" Matsuda said.
You jumped in the back and stuffed your flowers into your bag.
"What happened to your cheek?" Matsuda asked, noticing the bandaid.
"I wanted a cherry blossom branch. Turns out I'm not as good at climbing down from trees as I am at getting up in trees" you replied.
"Well, I think this whole situation has kind of broke L" Aizawa added.
"Let me guess, he thinks I'm going to leave him and thinks I'm in all kinds of danger and he's all paranoid I'll find some dashing young man with money and love and rock hard abs and realise I'm out of his league?"
"Yeah, this has happened before?"
"Barley, but every time it has it's been the same"
"That man clearly didn't get hugged as a child"
"I know. That's what I'm here for nowadays. That poor man has never handed being wrong and abandonment well before" you said.
"We would have gotten Watari to talk to him but he's out. Chief Yagami decided to try talk to him. Dad instincts I guess" Matsuda explained.
"Dunno how well that will go, he's stubborn that man"
You pulled into the parking lot and headed back inside, kicking your shoes off and walking into the empty monitor room where L's desk was empty. That meant he was upstairs.
"We'll order that Thai while you deal with him? Noodles again?" Matsuda asked.
"Yeah, they were fucking good dude, you should try them. I'll go sort all this out"
You headed upstairs, and when you opened the door you immediately stopped in your tracks at a very uncommon and new sight. L sobbing into cheif Yagamis shoulder wrapped in a dad hug. Didn't they have like, an unspoken rivalry or something? What on earth caused all this?
Mr Yagami spotted your in the door frame. You gave him a confused look, one that nonverbal said 'how did you manage this?'
He shrugged and turned back to L.
"You should probably talk to her now" he said.
L turned to look at you and when it clicked you were back, he got up and scampered over to you, jumping into your arm and sobbing into your chest.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Please don't leave me, I know I fucked up and I'm the worst person ever and I should have never have said that but I'll do anything, please stay, please-" he rambled.
"Woah! Hey- slow down. I'm not leaving you ok?"
Mr Yagami got up and walked past you to leave you alone.
"Good luck" He said.
"I don't know what you did, but sir you are a wizard" you replied.
"It's called being a dad, work it out kids"
You waited for him to leave and you dragged L over to the sofa and sat down.
"Ok, I thought there was like a weird unwritten rivalry between you two because Lights Kira and all that?" You said.
"I thought so to..." L replied.
"Now listen mister. I'm not leaving you, calm down. I still love you. I know you didn't know mean any of that and it was all out of stress. This is why I tell you to take more breaks and get some sleep. You're overworking yourself into being short tempted. I'm just trying to keep you sane here. I just want you happy and healthy"
You wrapped your arms around him and gently rubbed arm, in an attempt to calm him down.
"I know. I'm sorry, I'm such an idiot-"
"Hey, no more self destructive words. I know you didn't mean it. You're ok honey. I still love you and I'm not going anywhere"
"Really?"
"Really"
You leaned down to kiss him, which he happily accepted and poured all his love into it. You knew with that this was all over and it'd all go back to normal tomorrow. The kiss broke and you wiped his tears with your sleeves.
"What happened to your cheek?" He asked.
"I'm not that good at climbing trees anymore. But I got some branches and flowers to press for by book. How about we do that tomorrow?" You suggested.
"Ok... that sounds good"
You squished his cheeks, in an attempt to make him smile.
"Now come on, smile. I love you ok? What do I have to do to prove that? Cuddles? Take you to Disney land? Make a cake? Get you hot? Have a movie night?" You asked.
"The last three..." he snickered.
"Alright, after dinner then. By the way... this whole situation will probably make the taskforce view you a lot differently"
He let that process for a moment, realising he was now an insecure broken child that happened to be a smart detective to the taskforce.
"Oh god... this is gonna be an awkward case now..."
