Home sick
A/n: y'all ever homesick for a place you don't even know? Bc like bitch, 24/7.
Prompt: L is homesick for wammys
Sitting on the windowsill, looking out at the night city like some dramatic movie moment, L didn't say a word. You were meant to be on night shift with him, watching the cameras. But he hadn't even looked at the screens, just out the window. A cup of overly sweetened tea in his hands, half finished and getting cold.
What was up with him? Why was he so... somber?
He's always rather monotonous, but never this sad. What was up with him. You hadn't been paying much attention to the cameras, mainly to him. You could take a photo of him like this and put some depressing caption on it and you'd get a boat load of likes from sad aesthetic blogs the way we was looking right now. You were kind of worried.
"L"
"Hm?"
"You ok?" You asked.
He shrugged you off, too busy in his own world. You got up and walked over to him, taking the mug from his hands and putting it aside. That caught his attention.
"Hey I was-" he began.
"You haven't drank it for like an hour now" you said.
You sat opposite him on the windowsill and pulled the curtain over the two of you.
"Alright, what's wrong?" You said.
"Nothing"
"Liar"
"It's fine" he insisted.
"No it's not"
He was silent, he knew he couldn't outsmart you here, you knew full well something was wrong and you wouldn't let up about it. He didn't really know what to say, no one really bothers to ask how he's feeling.
"I just... miss home that's all" he sighed.
"England?"
"Yeah"
"What part are you from?" You asked.
"Winchester"
He gazed longingly out the window, like he was trying to look past all the buildings for wherever he wanted to go back to.
"It's pretty cold there isn't it?" You asked.
"Yeah, it's always cold there. I guess that's why I like cold weather"
"Like snow?"
"No, not snow. Never snow. Just the cold, or the rain"
He seemed so defensive when you bought up snow. Maybe he can only handle so much cold, or he had a bad memory linked to it.
"What was Winchester like? Like what was the scenery like?" You asked.
A small somber smile broke on his lips.
"The part I grew up in was pretty out of the way. My... house... was at the end of a long quiet road. There was a small town area with shops and a few cafes and bakeries, but the further you got down the road the more spaced out houses got until you hit a cemetery, a vineyard then my place. There was a park next to it as well, the amount of times I grazed myself on that playground..." he explained.
"Clumsy kid?"
"Very. That's part of the reason I would, and still wear long clothes. Less of a chance of cutting yourself on something"
"Smart. Were the bakeries good?"
"Very, there was one that had the best vanilla slices I've ever had. I really want one but no one else makes them like that bakery does"
You had the feeling he needed to let this out, he seemed haply for once. He was always such a gloomy guy, now he was actually smiling and passionate about something.
"So, what was the childhood like of the worlds greatest detective?" You asked.
He paused, the smile slightly dropping.
"Bittersweet... I honestly don't remember much apart from the surroundings, music from the time and books and movies I liked at the time. And a few events here and there. I didn't really talk to others, I liked being lonely"
"Surely you had some friends? Wouldn't your parents have made you play with someone?"
This time the smile dropped completely, and the happiness in his voice drained.
"I don't have parents"
Shit. Too far (y/n).
"Oh I-" you began.
"Don't worry. It's been so long I'm used to it. Plus, Watari is kind of my not officially adoptive dad anyway, so I had adults. Just not related to me" he said.
"Well that's something. At least you didn't get stuck in a shitty orphanage your whole life"
"Shitty no, orphanage yes. Watari... worked there for a while so I stayed there with him for a while too. It wasn't awful, in fact I kind of liked it. I didn't need two parents and my own house, just being sheltered and fed was enough..."
He seemed sadder, and you kind of worried you'd accidentally struck a chord. His longing gaze out the window told you how badly he wanted to go back to England, Japan is pretty and all, but it's not his home. After a moment of silence he spoke again, but his shaky voice caught you off guard.
"I miss the glow in the dark planets above my bed... and the creaky floorboards I memorised so I wouldn't step on them at night when I snuck to the kitchen to get lollies, the chandelier above the stairwell... the tree everyone would climb out the back, the drawings I did and stuck on the walls that I never took down even when I got older..."
You watched him tear up, party shocked to see him cry, partly worried you'd actually bought up something you should have.
"I just wanna go home..." He sighed, wiping his tears away with his sleeves.
You sighed, leaning forward to pull him into a hug. He didn't resist, seeing the chance to show emotion and now he judged or worried you'll use it against him in the case. You smiled a bit, happy that he trusted you enough to even open up about this in the first place.
"When the case is over you can go back, just a little bit longer. We're getting close" you said.
"But what if kira just passes his power on again?"
"We both know Light is behind this, we stop him, we stop everything. It doesn't matter if it passes on because if we cut off the source not much will be done afterward"
"I hate this case so much. It started out interesting, and someone had to do it... but I just don't want to anymore. I just wanna go home and sleep under my glow in the dark planets again... I wanna know how everyone is doing back home, I wanna see them again"
You gently rubbed his back, letting him just let everything out on your shoulder. You really did care about him, even if he didn't believe it. Even if there's the chance you'd never see him again after the case, if he's happy at home then you're happy knowing he's ok. You were gonna solve this case, if not for justice, so that L can go home.
"We'll solve this, I promise. And when it's all over you can take the first flight back to England and hope it's not snowing. You'll get home eventually L..."
