Freedom
Hc: in between cases you and L like to explore the world and go on long road trips.
The wind blew through your hair as you sped down the highway of LA, the BB murders just wrapped up. You decided to have some fun in America while you were there, so you rented a convertible and set off for the best beaches. But they were a little way way, that meant a road trip. This was the part of travelling for cases you liked the most, doing something fun with L to rewind afterwards. You watched the palm trees that lined the roads go by, your sunglasses blocking the wind from your eyes.
The covered backseat containing your bags and beach gear as you'd planned to spend a few nights in a beach house. The radio playing all the hits from the 90s as it had just entered the 2000s, and all the radio stations were looking back on all the hits of the last decade. This was the only time L ever drove himself, when going on road trips with you. Just the two of you. You'd gotten up early that day, at 5am to set off for the beaches and it had reached just past 2pm, you'd been driving for ages and stopped at a diner for lunch. Best burgers you'd ever had man.
You could see the coast line approaching at the end of the long road, getting exited to screw around at the beach. You looked over at L who you'd forced into a sun hat, in an attempt to protect his fragile extremely pale skin from the harsh sun, and tied it under his chin so it wouldn't fly off as you drove.
"About time!" You smiled.
"That's why I made you get up so early, if we left at 8 we would have ended up here at 7pm" he replied.
The beach got closer as you pulled off the highway and onto one of the street roads. The smell of salt water and the sound of sea gulls filling your senses. It'd been ages since you'd had a beach day, and it was the middle of summer so you were really exited.
At long last you pulled up into the parking lot of the beach house resort. You got out, eager to get in the water. You'd left the hotel from the case in your bathers, ready to jump straight in. But you had to check in first. You both got up to the reception desk and checked in, getting the key to your beach house. You dragged your suitcases behind you, looking for your house number.
"37...38...39! Here!" You smiled, rushing up and unlocking the door.
You opened it and looked in awe at the pretty little house. L didn't go halfway with booking venues. There was a breakfast bar, a surfboard on the wall, a TV mounted on the wall with a sofa in front of it. A winding stair case off the the side that lead to the bedroom and bathroom. A clothes line could be seen out the back door alongside a table and chairs.
"Woah! This place looks so nice!"
"I thought you'd like it, I know you like the whole beach aesthetic" L replied.
"You sure don't go half way" you said.
"I'd rather pay a little extra to have a nice place than a bad one, let's go upstairs"
You made your way up the winding stair case and were met with two doors. The bathroom and the bedroom.
You checked the bathroom first. There was a big bath, bubble bath sitting on the side. A shower head connected to it as well. One wall was entirely mirror, the sink counter lined with shell decorations and complimentary mini shampoo bottles.
"Woah, fancy" you marvelled, liking what you saw.
"Haven't seen a mirror wall before, looks kind of cool actually"
"I know, and look at the bath! It could fit like 7 people!"
"It's got jets too! It's like a jacuzzi tub!" L said, suddenly interested.
He only liked baths with bubbles, he was so childish sometimes. You could tell he would definitely be wanting to jump in with you after swimming. You then went for the bedroom, immediately falling in love with what you saw. The bed was held up by strong ropes, there was a massive window with an amazing view of the beach, there was a TV in the bedroom too and had fishing net decorations on the ceiling lined with fairy lights.
"Woah! I floating bed! Dude you picked the best place!" You exclaimed, dropping your bag and jumping into the bed, making it swing slightly.
L jumped on next to you, making the bed rock some more.
"Hey I kinda like this. If I had a bed like this at home maybe I'd actually sleep more often" he replied.
After a moment of marvelling the room, and putting your bags on the chairs that were against the wall, you unzipped them and began to grab all the towels and beach stuff out, eager to get out to the beach.
"Ok let's go!" You said.
"Woah wait a sec! I didn't leave in bathers like you did, let me get changed" L replied.
"Right! And I'm not letting you get sunburnt with your pale skin!"
You began to dig through your beach bag for sunscreen.
"On no"
"Oh yes"
After a few minutes of L getting ready and you covering him in sunscreen, you grabbed your towels, beach bags and hit the shoreline. You walked for a little bit to a quieter spot on the beach and dropped your bags and towel into the sand, kicking off your shoes pulling the shirt that covered your bathers off, dropping that in the sand too. You'd always liked swimming, so you were quite comfortable in the water.
By now it was about 3 o'clock, the sun started had hit golden hour and shone through the ocean in streams of light. You grabbed L's hand before he could protest and ran for the water, rushing into the waves and letting one knock both of your over. You broke to the surface for air, shaking your hair out of your face. L broke to the surface and flicked his fringe from his eyes.
"Hey! It's freaking cold!" He laughed.
"It's always cold when you first get in, you'll get used to it" you replied, kicking some water at him.
"Hey!"
He kicked some water back at you.
"Are you challenging me to a splash fight?" You sassed.
"Prepare for battle!" He exclaimed, kicking more water at you.
You broke into a full of splash war, probably swallowing half the ocean in the process. You loved days like this the most, because L was his true self when it was just you and him. No criminals to catch, no percentage talk, no emotionless robot persona, his genuine smile would shine through the day and he'd have fun, able to let go off the stress of being the worlds greatest detective and just let himself live in the moment. Dodging one of his splash attacks, you dove under a wave, he promptly followed you under, trying to catch you.
He grabbed your shoulder before you could swim off and you turned to face him in defeat. He gave you a playful smirk, saying that he'd won. You rolled your eyes in defeat and before you ran out of air, grabbed either side of his face and bought him into an underwater kiss.
The wave drew back into the sea and the water level sunk, you broke back to the surface and caught your breath. As you were underwater the sunset had furthered into orange lighting and shimmered off the water.
L grabbed your hand and smiled at you, getting your attention.
"Wanna go have dinner at one of the restaurants on the docks? We can show up in soaking bathers and still get service there" he suggested.
"Sounds good, I'll race you there!" You replied, running back to shore.
"HEY NOT FAIR!"
You grabbed your bags and raced each other down the paths at to get to the docks. You ended up having some seafood at the restaurant at the end of the long jetty and sat outside, watching the sun go down over the water, just talking about life and making jokes. No case in the way to ruin everything. Of course, you finished the evening with ice cream for desert and eventually made your way back down to your beach house under the stars.
You walked hand in hand down the path, towels over your shoulders and bags in your free hands.
"Today was so much fun" you sighed.
"I know, I love when cases end... we can just fun again" L replied.
"I miss when we can't just let go and be idiots"
"Me too, I miss not being able to just spend time with you..."
"I love this feeling, of pure freedom. I don't want this day to end"
You reached your beach house and made your way inside. You dropped your bags at the door, throwing your wet towels over the railing of the stairs for the time being. You were about to go and head for your room to grab some clean clothes when L grabbed your hand.
"Well, we have a jacuzzi bath don't we? I'm sure there's plenty of fun to have with that. The day isn't over just yet~" he smirked.
"You're right... bubbles make everything better, everything~"
