First words

A/n: ight why are you guys in your feels? I just counted and the most popular oneshots in this book are dad L ones. So to feed the masses, here's another one for you.

Prompt: l having to take care of the baby while you're out.

Usually, this was a 50-50 job. But with you out of town for a friends wedding, L was left with himself, and his daughter.

His daughter that demanded attention 24/7.

It was impossible to get any work done, so he's decided to just take a break from it until you got back, focusing completely on the baby. She was about 7 months now, growing up fast. At this moment in time, she sat under a mobile play mat, whacking the hanging toys and laughing at the sounds they made.

L never really slept that well to begin with, but the whole dad thing exhausted him. But it was all worth it to see her grow. You were insistent on being a cool mum, allowing things like hair dye and sleepovers and crazy clothes in her later years. L was all for that, but did want to make sure things didn't get too out of hand and keep her safe. So if he had to be the slightly less cool protective dad, so be it.

It was time to try and get the little one to eat something healthy. Which always resulted in bit of a mess. He picked her up from the play mat and sat her in her high chair, wrapping her up in a bib and going to get some food.

She watched as her dad picked up a spoon, scooping up the fruit flavoured baby food and held it out for her.

"Come on, it's fruit. You like fruit" he said.

After a few more moments of processing, she took the spoon in her mouth, smiling at the sweet taste.

"I believe you've inherited my sweet tooth, if you behave I'll let you have a lollipop. Just... don't tell your mum"

Making grabby hands for more, she giggled. This time when L held out the spoon, she tried to grab it for herself.

"Oh god- this will be a mess. But... she does have to learn..."

L let her take the spoon, watching her as she managed to get it in her mouth without a mess. That definitely wouldn't last long though. Holding the cup out for her to try and scoop, he watched for the inevitable mess. And of course, half of the spoonful went everywhere, but she managed to eat the rest. This flavour was definitely a hit, with each spoonful she'd smile or giggle. Each time, L's ice cold heart would melt a little. He had no idea how by the end of breakfast she'd managed to get food all over her despite having a table to catch it, and a bib. But after cleaning things up, it was time to dress her for the day.

L wasn't really one for fashion, he wore the same thing every day after all. But something clicked when you went baby shopping for the first time. Anything that had built in socks, little mittens and hats, cute animals, fluffy fabric, it was all needed. The second he saw them, it was into the basket they went.

It was a bit cold today, so he decided to rug his little girl up in something warm. This was always a process too, because she moved and wiggled all the time. Getting one arm in was a journey, but two? That's a whole mission. She seemed to find this struggle very funny though. Every time she'd avoid the sleeves she'd laugh at her dads failure.

"You're not making this easy sweetheart, work with me here"

All he got in response was a giggle, condescending in baby language. When he managed to wrap her up in nice warm clothes, he put her in a little hat to top it off, unable to stop himself from smiling as he did so.

"God, you're so cute. You get that from your mother you know?"

Morning routine now done, she was free to play. But when he put her down with all her toys, she just turned around and tugged on her fathers jeans.

"I have to make my own breakfast you know?"

All he got in response to that was grabby hands. Picking her back up, it was clear his breakfast would have to wait. He sat on the sofa, letting her curl up in his lap. Turning on the TV to some mindless kids show that at this point was white noise to him, he sighed.

"You're so demanding, and now you're just gonna ignore your own father in favour of some colourful shapes? Unbelievable" he joked.

He wondered what you were doing at that wedding right now. Probably sitting there bored out of your mind or eating cake that he wouldn't be able to taste. He did like this daddy daughter time, but it was hard work. He couldn't wait for you get back, he missed you. Feeling his daughter grab his sleeves and pull at them, he looked down at her.

"What?" He asked.

She gave him big doll eyes.

"I can't understand baby, I think that's a mother's trick"

She pointed up at him, smiling and babbling away.

"Me? What about me? I'm the best daddy in the world? Why thank you"

She gave him a bright smile, her tiny hands reaching up for him.

"Daddy?"

In that moment, hearing his daughter talk for the first time, several months before most babies can talk, his heart jumped.

"Did you just-"

"Daddy!"

A smile broke on his face, laughing in joy as he bought his girl into his arms.

"That's right! Well done- oh my god I have to call your mother-"
