Duet
A/n: I honestly live for dance AUs FUCK. Just like,,, give me L in a pretty outfit dancing so some classical music please.
AU: dance.
The lovers last dance. A tragic dance stage play about a boy who's lost his childhood love, struggles with the loneliness and ends up killing himself to be with her. An award winning piece of theatre that only the best of the best dance to. It requires skill, chemistry and many other factors.
Throughout the show, the girl is an angel that the boy can't see and they have many duets where she's trying to reach him but can't and when the boy finally dies, he becomes an angel too and they reunite in the afterlife with a final duet. Even the most stone cold critics have been bought to tears because of the tragically beautiful story.
And today, you were auditioning. Not just for any little role, the lead. The angel girl. If you managed to land the role you'd travel across the country to perform. It could be your big break. Your studio recommended you, and here you were sitting in the waiting room, fiddling with the ribbon on your pointe shoes, playing the choreography in your head. A girl with blonde hair sat across from you, the sticker on her shirt said she was going for the same role as you. She's just come out of the dance room and looked stressed.
We're the judges that harsh?
She looked up at you, noticed your sticker and have you a smile.
"Hey, don't stress it. Or you'll end up a trembling mess like me" she said.
Well, at least she was a good sport. Unlike the girl at your last audition who scoffed when she saw you were going for the same role. This girl looked familiar though...
"It's just... this is like the biggest role I've ever gone for" you sighed.
"Aren't you the girl who won female soloist nationals? You don't have anything to worry about" she replied.
That's right... you knew her from nationals. She was in a studio about 6 hours away.
"That's right! You won duets!" You said.
"That's me, I'm Misa by the way"
"(Y/n), nice to meet you. I bet you'll land the role, you have experience in duets"
"I'm not sure really, duets need chemistry and I just wasn't feeling it with that guy... I'm sure he's nice but we didn't click"
They'd already cast the lead male. You'd heard of this guy. He won male national soloist and even made it to internationals one year. He's from a really big name studio too. If you landed the role you'd be transferred to his studio for a few terms to practice, then hit the road with him to perform. The audition was to do the first duet with him as a judge of dance skill and chemistry for the female lead role.
"That's right, chemistry is a massive factor... god I hope we have something there" you said.
"You're a damn good dancer. I'm sure you'll get ranked pretty high.
"Have you seen the concept art for the tutus? They're so pretty!"
"Oh my god yes! The sequins on the bodice and wings on the back with white and gold feathers! And the shoes match!"
"I'd love to wear that on stage, it looks so pretty. But I won't lie the backup angel dresses look amazing too"
"I love the headpieces they come with, they're so pretty"
Before you could say anything else, you heard your name be called out, you turned to the door on the right and saw one of the judges waiting for you.
"Good luck" Misa said, watching you get up and enter the room.
You put your bag off to the side and handed them your second lot of forms saying your dance history and sizes for costumes.
"Alright, you know the dance to the first piece?" One of the judges said.
"Like the back of my hand" you replied.
"Alright, Ryuzaki here has been cast for our lead male. If you want lead female, you two have to mesh"
You turned to face the boy standing behind you, and your heart skipped like, 7 beats.
Holy fuck... he was so cute. He had fluffy black hair, he looked tried and had eyebags under his eyes. Probably because of all the late night training. He wore casual dance attire and grey pointe shoes that looked brand new. Slightly taller than you, but rather slim, although he had pretty toned legs, every dancer does. He looked up at you, making eye contact and the two of your starred at each other for a moment. In your peripheral vision, you could have sworn you saw one of the judges crack a smile when she noticed.
You both snapped out of it and stepped into the starting positions standing on the x's on the ground. It was silent for a moment, then the music started. Moving your arms up, pointing your finger and looking to the sky the dance started. Going from flat feet to pointe, twirling around the taped off stage area, in time with the music and Ryuzakis actions. You could see why people spoke so highly of him, he had the grace of... well... every graceful animal you could think of. His movements made him look delicate, like one wrong move would make him shatter.
Something about this dance was different. You'd done it hundreds of times in practice, but this one... it was different. Like forgetting the judges were there, like you were out in the moonlit garden of a palace with the prince as you were but a pauper in a forbidden love. It felt like one of those cheesy movies.
You'd duetted before, but this... it was different. You didn't miss a beat, step, detail, nothing. And before you knew it, the magical moment was over and you hadn't made a single mistake. Holding the final position for a moment, the judges gave you a round of applause before turning to each other to talk for a moment. You broke the pose, catching your breath. Glancing over at Ryuzaki, he didn't seem phased by the non-stop dancing he had to do. Not breaking a sweat. His feet must be killing him, but he stood on pointe like it was nothing.
If anything he should be the girl in the dance, he had the delicate grace of a damn princess.
Actually... didn't be dance to the girls part of sean lake at nationals? That's right! He had the outfit with the pastel blue and purple feather design. He won because the judges had never seen a boy do the girls part and ace it before. He clearly knew his grace, and used it to his advantage. Not to mention he looked very light, so he could easily be lifted in a dance.
"Ok, thank you (y/n). Please wait with the other dancers outside while we make a final decision. Ryuzaki, you have a say too"
You nodded and gave Ryuzaki a smile as you picked up your bag and left the room. Misa gave you an exited look. You sat opposite her on the floor, eager to get the painful shoes off.
"So? How'd it go?" She asked.
"I... just... he'd so, graceful!" You said.
"I know! It's like watching a porcelain doll! I felt like if he made a wrong move he'd just, shatter!"
"That's exactly what I was thinking. He's so... perfect! I see why he gets so much high praise"
You stuffed your shoes in your bag and let your blistered feet stretch out.
"Well, what about you? Did you mess up or did I go good?" Misa asked.
"I don't think I messed up, it was like I'd left my body and was dancing in another dimension. It felt so surreal. I couldn't take my eyes off Ryuzaki so I have no idea what the judges were looking at"
Misa gave you a smirk. Like she knew something you didn't.
"What?" You asked.
"I smell chemistry..."
"You sure it's not just hairspray from this damn bun?"
"If you get lead, I'll happily settle for backup because damn I wanna see you two dance now"
After a couple more painfully long minutes, the judges came out into the waiting room with Ryuzaki.
"Ok girls, we have the results" The head judge said.
Everyone immediately paid attention, snapping their heads to wards the judges.
"Those who auditioned specifically for backup please go into the dance room with the studio head"
A group of girls got up and went into the next room leaving about 10 girls in the room.
"So, for the three gateway angels trio we have... Hannah, Rachel and Amyu" The Judge said.
The three girls must have been friends because they all smiled at each other and group hugged.
"The three demons go to... Layla, Maki and Astrid"
The girls gave each-other smiles. Only two roles left. Lead, and the guardian angel.
"The role of guardian angel goes to Misa"
You gave her a smile and she giggled, high fiving you. It may now have been lead but it was definitely a major role.
"And the lead role of the lost lover goes to..."
The remaining girls held their breath in anticipation, including yourself. This was it, last chance.
"(Y/n), congratulations"
You thought you'd heard wrong for a moment, but no. You'd actually landed the lead female role. The girls in the room clapped for you and Misa pulled you into a hug, congratulating you.
"We haven't seen a performance quite like yours (y/n), you didn't make a single mistake and meshed perfectly with Ryuzaki. We suggest you all exchange content information to communicate about practice times, and the boys roles will be posted on our website later this day. Girls that didn't get a role, come with us please. Everyone else is free to leave as you wish"
The room erupted in chatter, and the remaining girls left with the judges.
"I told you you'd land it!" Misa smiled.
"I actually did it, holy hell..."
"I can settle for guardian angel, they have a cool dress. And wait! I have a duet too... oh a hope the boy that gets cast as my partner is cute"
You laughed at her excitement, when you head someone say your name behind you. You jumped, turning to see none other than the porcelain doll himself. Ryuzaki.
"Congratulations" he said.
"Thanks, I honestly didn't think I'd make it" you replied.
"You deserved it, you danced the best out of everyone. No one else felt right"
You got that, there was something about that duet that hit different.
"Well, that was probably the most surreal dance of my life" you said.
"I get that, I've done that same dance many times today but with you it was almost like... I don't know. Like it was a dream" he replied.
"Right! I felt like I was on a cloud or something"
"Like we weren't really there, but in a... magic land or something"
"Exactly"
Misa smirked at the both of you. Giggling a little. You both turned to her in confusion.
"Yeah that's definitely chemistry I smell" she teased.
The both of you shyly looked away with red cheeks. You couldn't seriously be falling for a guy you just met right? But something about that dance felt so good. You could only imagine what the end duet when the characters reunite would be like with him. You did as the judges suggested and for everyone's contact information, one of the girls immediately made a group chat to talk about practice.
As you were talking waiting for your parents to pick you up and drive you back home since they lived closer than you did and offered to pick you up and drop you off, you felt Ryuzaki tap your shoulder again.
"I've gotta go, but I look forward to seeing you at practice. You'll be a pleasure to perform with" he said.
"It was nice to meet you, I can't wait for this show either"
"And one more thing... you're going to look amazing in the angel dress"
"Uh-"
"See you at practice"
And with that he grabbed his bag and walked over to an older man you assumed was his dad.
"Y-yeah! See you at practice!"
With one last exchange of smiles he walked out the door and left. Misa snickered at your flustered state.
"W-what are you looking at?" You stammered.
"(Y/n)s, got it bad" she replied.
"N-no I don't"
"You are head over heels!"
