Defensive

Hc: being around the worlds greatest detective means your son grew up to be very protective of his parents. Especially his dad, knowing everything that happened to him as a kid.

One of the biggest secrets L kept from the world, along with his identity, is the fact he has a wife and child. You wanted to give your a relatively normal life, as normal as it could be for the child of someone as high ranking as L. He understood the seriousness of keeping L's identity a secret and was trusted by L to go to a normal school and not he homeschooled.

Thanks to you and L being actually good parents (I like L's birth parents) he grew up to be a very respectful and protective person. It was you and L he respected the most. And he was just as protective of the two of you as you were of him. If anyone dared try to hurt either of you he wasn't afraid to throw a few punches.

But the amount of respect he had for his father was ridiculous. Not only had he made it this far in the crime-fighting field, he was also incredibly strong to get though years of abuse from those birth parents of his, and life as an orphan. So basically, if anyone hurt L not only will they have to answer to his wife who'd chew the fuck out, but his son as well who wasn't afraid to fuck someone up.

L taught his son one key thing: don't take shit from anyone. And those words have stuck by him his whole life.

Using an alias, 'Riku Ryuga' was just a normal kid who's parents Ryuzaki and Hanako just so happened to be cops. L picked the aliases Riku and Hanako for you guys as he thought they'd fit in with the fact there was a clear line of Japanese in your family. L being half and then passing that gene onto his son.

Those words were engraved in his mind.

Don't take shit from anyone.

"Riku, you coming to the end of year ball?" A classmate said, waiting for the bell to go.

"Nah, not my scene. Plus it's kind of an important date at home" he replied.

"What date? A birthday?"

"No, it's not a happy date. Some... really horrible stuff happened to my dad that day when he was 4, it's... traumatic so me and my mum need to just, be there for you know"

"Ouch. Even as an adult it affects him?"

"It was bad. Not my place to talk about the details but it was so bad that when he told me I damn near cried for him"

"Yikes, makes sense why you'd need to be there. Sounds like he's spiral if you weren't" the classmate replied.

"He would. But oh well, dances aren't really my thing. Plus it's not like I have a date or anything"

The lunch bell went, and after a brief goodbye he went to go to his locker before the lunch room. He switched out some books and closed the door, locking it and then going to the lunch room. He spotted his group of friends and sat down at the table.

"What'd I miss?" He asked.

"Nothing. Apparently you're not going to ball?" One of his friends said.

"Nah, not my thing. Plus I kind of have to be at home"

"Aww come on man! Come with us. It'll be fun"

"I can't even if I wanted to man. Not the date for it"

"Why you gotta stay home anyway?" Another friend asked.

"You know how shit went down with my dad when he was little? Yeah it's the anniversary of that. Gotta be there for him"

The other boys looked at each other in confusion.

"So? Ball is important"

"And... so is being a supportive son?"

The boy opposite him scoffed.

"So he'd making you skip an important social event because he's dwelling on the past? Low man"

Riku gave him a disgusted look.

"Dude? You know it was bad. I have to be there. I want to" he said.

"He's adult, he can get over it"

"Get- are you fucking dumb? That's not how trauma works!" Riku exclaimed.

"Your dads a pussy if you ask me"

Blood boiling, he was now seeing red. No one shit talks his dad. No one. Meanwhile back at home, a peaceful half-nap was occurring with you and L. Arms wrapped around each other as you lay on the sofa, watching TV and just enjoying each other's presence.

"I feel kind of bad..." L said.

"About?" You replied.

"Keeping him from ball"

"Please, he's hate ball. He's just like you, social events are a major no go. Plus, he said himself that he'd rather be there for you. You've raised an amazingly understanding son you know"

"I guess, but it's a big deal for most kids"

"Riku isn't most kids. He's your kid. He's a carbon copy of you with a few of my genes thrown in" You said.

"And less trauma"

"That too, it'll be fine. He doesn't care. He'd rather be helping you with cases and stuff"

You placed a kiss on his forehead, making him smile and return the affection by going for your lips. Giving you a quick peck and nuzzling up to you.

"I love you" he said.

"I love you too"

The cute moment was interrupted by your phone ringing. Rolling your eyes and reached over to grab it and answer it.

"Hello?"

L could hear a voice on the other side but now make out any words.

"What? Why?"

Your surprised tone of voice made him curious. Who was on the other end? What was going on?

"That's... so unlike him"

Him? Riku?

"Alright, we'll be there soon, bye"

You hung up and tried to sit up, lifting L up with you.

"What's going on?" He asked.

"That was the principal. Riku got into a fight"

He blinked, freezing for a moment in shock. His son? The quiet smart kid? In a fight?

"What? Over what? He'd never hurt someone..."

"I don't know but they want an immediate meeting with us. They'll explain when we get there"

You both got up, quickly changing from the pyjamas you'd been wearing all day into proper clothes and slipping on some shoes. A short drive to the school and you made it as lunch ended and last period started. Both of you walking up to the front office hand in hand like the cheesy couple you were, you saw two beat you boys waiting outside. Riku's friends. Was this a friendship break? You had so many questions. Entering the office you saw Riku, bruised eye, blood stained tissue in his hand and ice pack in his lap.

"Dad!"

He jumped up and wrapped his arms around L. L didn't know what the sudden affection was about but hugged back anyway.

"Woah, slow down. What's going on? What happened"

The principal spoke up.

"Take a seat, Mr and Mrs Ryuga"

It was then you noticed the parents of another beat up boy in the seats next to yours. They looked angry, and you recognised the boy as a friend of Riku. Although judging by the situation it may be an ex-friend now.

"Alright, I'm sorry to pull you adults out of work. But your boys started a fight in the lunch room ams caused quite a riot" the Principal said.

"He started it!" The other boys said.

"That's enough- don't speak unless spoken to" the principal snapped.

It was eerily tense in that office. And you still had no idea what happened to cause this.

"From what I understand Riku did start it, why?"

"Because. Apparently it's funny that I'm missing ball to support my own father. SOMEone doesn't understand that the anniversary date of something upsetting is important. Not something you can just 'get over'. That's not how trauma works. With all due respect sir, I will not stand by and let someone I thought of as a friend slander me and my father" Riku said, clearly holding back rage.

L felt a small smile creep across his lips. His son was defending him? He didn't condone fighting sure... but in defence? That's a different story. You and L glanced at each other with a proud look on your faces. You'd raised a good boy, with a very strong sense of justice.

"I won't ask about the details of this date. But it's obviously of family importance, no?" The principal asked.

"It's been something he take care of every year for over a decade, yes" you replied.

The principal turned to the other child.

"And you knew of this event being important?"

"Yes sir..."

"And still thought making fun of it was a good idea because it's 'not cool' to not show up at ball?"

"Yes..."

The anger the boys parents had at you was now directed at their child. Realising he was the one in the wrong. He truly started it and stirred the pot to the point of boiling over.

"Ok, so that's that. You shouldn't have pushed any further with the issue. And Riku, you shouldn't have gotten physical"

"I know... I'm just, protective" Riku replied.

"Now I can't let this go unpunished. Both of you, suspended for a week. And apologise to each other"

A death glare exchanged between the boys and a half assed sorry later, it was case dismissed and into the car to be taken home for a week off school. Riku seemed ashamed of himself the whole car ride home but as soon as the front door closed, L smiled and picked him up, even though he was 14 and getting to big for that. Holding him in a tight hug.

"You're not mad at me?" He asked.

"No? You stuck up for my why would I be mad?"

Riku looked over at you.

"Me? No way. I would have done the same. I adore your father and of anyone lays a finger on him I'll beat their fucking ass" you replied, joining the hug.

"I taught you not to end up like me when I was your age, depressed and a pushover who happened to be a detective. And what did you do? Exactly what I told you. Don't take shit from anyone" L said.

"Just imagine if people knew you were L. They wouldn't dare talk shit" Riku said.

"They wouldn't touch you either. Look I'm not mad. I don't condone violence but it was in defence. If someone tried to hurt you or your mother I'd beat them up too"

You didn't interfere, these moments made you smile. L used to be so closed off, monotone and sad. Now that he has a family he's really grown, is much more emotional and affectionate. It made you so proud of him. That's your man, you helped shape that.

"I couldn't stand anyone disrespecting you. I love you dad"

Mentally squealing like a fangirl at the cuteness of the father son relationship, you waited L's response.

"You may be big enough to beat someone up now, but you'll always be my little boy. I love you too"
