Daddy issues
A/n: is this based off the song? Yes it is.
Hc: you aren't the only one in taskforce who's dad left them.
Trust was something you found hard to have. Growing up you have memories of your mother crying at the kitchen table and when you asked when daddy would be home, she wouldn't reply. The answer, was never. Five year old You was crushed for so long, seeing all your friends with perfect happy families was hard on your child self. So you never grew up with a strong male figure, your sense of trust was destroyed, and you could barely even look at older men.
Of course most of the taskforce were what counted as older men, they were a bit different, they were co-workers, your superiors. But did you trust them completely? No.
To your surprise though, you actually found that there was someone your age among the people on the case. Although he was definitely your superior, he was the worlds greatest detective after all. L was different from the taskforce. He was so much more understanding, to you especially. L was able to get information on anyone, so it was likely he knew.
Today was a date you dreaded though. On this day almost 20 years ago your father disappeared, you could remember it so clearly. He dropped you off at school, you had a normal day. But when it came time to pick you up, he was late. And after waiting, it wasn't even him, it was your mum that came to get you. She didn't say much, but she looked on edge. You spent the rest of the afternoon pretty quiet, you could feel something was wrong. But when dinner time came, and your dad wasn't there, you finally asked.
"Mummy, where's daddy?"
She didn't reply, just sighed and told you to come over for a hug. Then the tears started. The only answer you got was a simple "I don't know darling."
Days passed, you worried about where you dad went. Your mother upset, she even kept you home one day because she didn't want to be alone. Those days turned into weeks, months, years, decades.
It still stung, all these years later. Even as a successful detective, even when you still had a loving mother, it still stung.
Sitting on the rooftops of taskforce, legs through the gaps in the railing and hanging off the side. Leaning on one of the poles of the metal barricade. It was cloudy, windy and gloomy. Just like your mood. You still wondered all these years later. Where did your daddy go? The silence of being up so high on the rooftop was broken by a door closing behind you.
You figured someone came to get you back to work, but stayed put. The presence sat beside you, leaning against the railing as you did.
It was L. You had the feeling he knew something was wrong from the start.
"I can make a deduction on what's wrong, but I can't be sure..." he said.
You weren't expecting L of all people to be the one trying to comfort you, yet here you were.
"You have all my background info, you're probably right" you replied.
"I don't know the full story though"
That was an invitation to talk about it, one you decided to take. L seemed to... get it?
"I was 5. He dropped me off at school and that was the last I saw him, mum picked me up late, and spent all dinner crying to me. She told me it would be ok, I was 5 after all... she wasn't going to just come out and say 'your father left you.' She cried a lot... I only really fully understood years later. All those kids at school with perfect families were so... happy" you explained.
He stayed silent, listening to your story. The wind messed up your hair, it was cool against your warm skin, the clouds blocking the sun that should be hitting the ground golden. It was a sad tranquility the two of you seemed to share.
"Kids with healthy families are lucky. They won't ever understand. Parents leave, parents split, parents abandon, parents don't always love their children. And that child has to live with that..." he stated, somehow managing to convey your feelings perfectly.
It was an odd wavelength you shared. Sadness, but comfort within each other's presence.
"L..." you began.
"Yeah?"
"Where did my daddy go?"
He was silent again, not quite knowing how to respond.
"I ask myself the same question almost every day..." he replied.
Him too huh? That made sense. Why he was more understanding and you could find a sense of comfort you couldn't find in others in him.
"You too?" You asked.
"I was... four probably. I don't remember much, one second I had someone to call a dad, then I didn't. For years. I guess I'm lucky that now I at least have safe care in Watari... but I still don't know what happened. I don't know how those scars got there, I don't know why everything happened... and I don't know where my daddy went either..." he replied.
You sighed, resting your head on his shoulder. He didn't seem to mind, leaning his head against yours.
"Look what he's missing out on. You ended up the most powerful detective in the world" you said.
"Whoever left you is missing out on having the most amazing, strong and loving girl I've ever met as a daughter" L replied.
You never expected to find comfort among a case so dangerous, but L was something special. He was one only person you'd met, that had something similar happen. He knew first hand what it was like. You appreciated his comfort more than anything. You actually had a good male in your life for the first time.
"You know... (y/n)... I never worked around other people because I knew if I got attached, I'd just get broken again. But you're different" he said.
You wrapped an arm around him, watching the clouds part and the sun slowly pour through the gaps, lighting up the area around it.
"I won't leave you. I'll follow you wherever you go, I don't want you to leave me either" you replied.
He accepted your affection, which was rare for him. He usually pushed away affection from people, but he felt differently for you. Someone that knew what it was like to be abandoned by someone you once thought you loved, wouldn't abandon someone they love.
"I appreciate all you do for me so much L. I find an oddly calming sense of happiness in you. I know you'll never leave me, and I love you so much for that..."
He took a second to let those words process.
"I love you too (y/n)... I won't leave you, ever"
