Christmas

A/n: bc I can't post on Christmas Day or eve, here's a Christmas oneshot early. Not the biggest fan of Christmas myself but hey, it's the most well known holiday. So yeah, no one shoes over Christmas Eve/day so I'll be away for the next days. Merry Christmas or happy holidays to those who don't celebrate it.

Watching the annual Christmas Eve movies was something you didn't care much for. You didn't care for the Christmas parades either, you were more of a food and family type person. You liked Christmas for the delicious food, hanging with your friends and family, and presents were pretty cool.  But this year would be relatively quiet. Just you and your newlywed husband. You'd spent Christmases together sure, but this was the first one as husband and wife.

When you met L all those years ago you didn't really expect him to be so soft on the inside. He'd built up this emotionless wall, but once broken revealed an amazing man. He would take a bullet for you as you would for him. So you were more than happy to have a quiet day with him. There was a rather enticing pile of presents under the tree, calling your name. Unable to resist the urge, you picked one up with your name on it and shook it up to up to your ear, trying to figure out what was inside.

It rattled. Like it was a box within a box. Something solid was inside that box but you couldn't tell what it was.

"You won't figure it out honey"

You jumped, seeing L behind you.

"Tell me what it is!" You exclaimed.

"You have to wait for tomorrow"

He sat down next to you, taking the present from your hands and putting it back under the tree.

"Can't I get a hint? Just a small one?" You asked.

He thought for a moment, deciding a cryptic clue would just confuse you even more.

"Ok, only if I get one too" he said.

"Deal"

"It's... part of something bigger"

What on earth was that meant to mean? Like that was a starter gift and he'd give you something bigger later? Was it something small you needed to use the bigger thing? You were lost for ideas.

"What the heck is that meant to mean?" You giggled.

"You'll have to think about it, or wait for tomorrow" He replied.

What was small that lead to something big?

"A... watch? The watch is small but time is big?"

"No"

"A- um... gift card with lots of money on it?"

"Not even close"

"God damnit. I'm lost!"

He laughed at your failed attempts of guessing correctly and wrapped an arm around you. Shaking his head.

"You'll just have to wait. Now what's my clue?" He asked.

How would you give a clue that doesn't ruin the surprise? You knew he'd love it, but you didn't want to ruin anything. And he was a really smart man, you had to be careful what you revealed or he'd be able to guess really easily.

"Ok... it's something that evolves"

He gave you a blank stare.

"What is that meant to mean?" He replied.

"You'll have to wait until tomorrow"

"Evolves? So something that can be updated?"

"You... could say that..."

He thought for a moment, trying to draw a conclusion like he would on cases, using anything you'd done in the past month to try and figure it out. You didn't go out much this month, so he ruled out nearby shops as the source. He also knew you wouldn't have ordered it online. Online shopping around Christmas time is a nightmare, and it may not arrive in time. So maybe it was something hand made? But what is handmade that can be updated?

"A... computer?" He guessed.

"Nope"

"A phone?"

"Nuh-Uh"

"I have no idea then"

"Try and add your own hint into it"

Something that evolves and is part of a bigger picture? He was lost. He may be the best detective out there, but he had a wife that was damn good at keeping secrets.

"No idea, only you can stump me like that" he sighed, shaking his head.

"Guess you'll have to wait" you smirked.

"Don't give me that look, you have to wait as well!"

You both giggled at your banter and as you did you glanced out the window, seeing the sun had gone down. But it was still light outside from all the houses decorated with fairy lights.

"Hey! It's dark now let's go drive around and look at all the lights!" You smiled, jumping up and running down the hall to get your shoes and a jacket.

L smiled as you ran off, he loved seeing you so happy. Your smile made him smile, it was really all he needed for Christmas. He turned to the tree, seeing the wrapped box with his name on it, your handwriting on the sticker and a few little hearts next to it. Out of curiosity he picked it up, trying to feel or hear what it was. It was... heavy. But not too heavy. Like the weight of a full water bottle. He shook it but it didn't make any noise. So either you'd added tissue paper to the box or it was the size of the box.

"L hurry up!" You called down the hall

He put the box back and got up, skidding down the hall to join you. Slipping on some shoes and letting you wrap him up in a scarf.

"Let's go! That one house a block over had tons of boxes in their front yard from fairy lights a few days ago. I bet their light display will be crazy good!" You said, grabbing his hand and pulling him out the door to the car.

The house was left empty, all the presents sitting peacefully under the tree. L knew you'd very much enjoy seeing the new keys to your dream car in that box the next morning. No more using your on the verge of death second hand one.

You were nervous about your gift to L, but you knew it would all turn out ok deep down. He had a lot to read up on, so you provided the book. And it was up to him to pick a fitting name for his future child using said book.
