Awoken
A/n: went through some old prompt chapters and saw a few of you mentioned this one. You guys like angst to fluff don't you?
Hc: you awake from a coma, not knowing how long had passed. And find that in the time you'd been out, a lot had happened.
"Why is daddy coming to pick me up?"
"You'll have to ask when he gets you, he said it's very important"
She girl had never been picked up so suddenly like this, she was just minding her own business. Colouring in animals on a worksheet with the rest of the class when the principal talked to the teacher and pulled her out of class. The adults seemed to know what was going on, and weren't telling her yet. The 4 year old girl, daughter of the worlds greatest detective was given a normal life so she grew up like a normal kid did. The only difference was her mother had been asleep for two years.
Her dad did everything to raise her, he was very very protective and spoiled her rotten. He's already come so close to losing one of his girls. He wasn't going to let another go.
"He was obviously very emotional on the phone, I imagine she won't be in school for a little while because of this" a teacher said.
"That's understandable, it has been two years. And with her smarts she won't fall behind" another replies.
What was going on? She didn't know. But she did have to wait long to find out. When now Ben a few minutes later, her dad walked into the office, red eyes and an uncontrollable smile.
"Daddy! What's happening? Where are we going?" She asked, running up to her father.
He ducked down to her height and smiled, tears eyed.
"We're going to the hospital" He said.
"Why?"
"Mummy's awake"
The little girl felt her eyes start to get watery, so many emotions exploding at once. It had been two years since she'd talked to her mother. She'd visit, and tell her stories, but she'd never respond.
"M-mummy's awake? For real?" She stammered, tears falling down her cheeks.
"She'd awake, for good. In a few weeks she can come home"
Now sobbing uncontrollably, she wrapped her arms around her dad, letting him pick her up as she cried into his chest.
L turned to the staff in the room as they watched with warm smiles.
"I'll be keeping her home for a few weeks" he said.
"We figured, don't worry she won't fall behind with how smart she is" the teacher said.
Leaving the school, they zoomed as fast at the road signs would let them to the hospital. According to the doctor that called him, L knew that you could talk, respond and remembered everything up until the accident. Your daughter didn't know exactly what happened, she was at daycare when it did happen. But it turns out you'd gotten too close to a suspect in a dangerous case, gotten stabbed and lost so much blood you almost died.
Although you could hear everything around you during your coma, there was still something L hadn't told you. Something he'd have to explain, and would make a huge difference.
You lay in your hospital bed, looked up to countless tubes and wires. You'd be there for a few weeks until you could walk again, get used to eating solid foods and could properly function. You may need crutches, maybe a wheel chair for a while. But in your state you'd be ready for release within a few weeks. You remembers everything that happened during your coma but didn't know how long had passed. It felt like a really long nap. You remember your daughter telling you that she started school, and what she'd do in class. You remember the doctors discussing how well you were doing over the time. And you remembered all the times L would talk to you, hoping you'd hear something that would wake you up. Whenever the doctors were in the room, he was his usual flat, monotone self. But when they left, he was the L you knew. The one that cried over small things, and wished you'd wake up.
He'd wish two things. One that you'd be spared any pain, and two... that you'd wake up.
But today you finally awoke, was fully responsive but still weak. The doctors called your husband, and told you that he'd be there as quick as possible. And it really didn't take long.
Hearing a door open, you turned to face it. Met with the two people you loved the most.
"MUMMY!"
Your daughter had grown. She was so much bigger. It had been a long time... she climbed onto your bed and dove into your arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Hey sweetheart... I'm awake. I'm ok" you said, kissing your girl in the forehead.
Your voice struck something in L, having not heard it for two years. He gave you a soft smile.
"Good morning" he joked, through teary eyes.
"Good morning..." you replied.
Leaning down to join the hug, you pulled him in, wrapping your arms around him.
"I thought I'd lost you..." he whispered.
"You can't get rid of me that easily" you replied.
You pressed your lips to his, savouring the first kiss in years. One you missed so much.
"Do you remember anything?"
Breaking the hug and sitting on the bed next to you he took your hand in his, gently rubbing his crying daughters back.
"Kind of. I know what happened, I remember that. And I could hear everything while I was out, I just don't know how long it's been. It feels like I woke up from a really long nap" you explained.
"You... don't know how long it's been?"
"No?"
L sighed, knowing you wouldn't take it well.
"It's been two years..."
You didn't respond. You didn't know what to say. You knew that you couldn't control your coma, but you still felt like it was your fault somehow. Your daughter had been without a mother for two years, she was four now. Your husband had been watching the empty spot in the bed next to him for two years. And you knew how badly he took being abandoned, he didn't handle being alone well.
"Two years..." you sighed.
"Yeah. Don't feel like it's your fault. It's that... bastard to attacked you. He stole you from us for two years and he's paying for it. We caught him after everything that happened and he's been sentenced to life" L explained.
"I've missed so much..."
"Don't think about that. You could hear us while you were out couldn't you? You know pretty much all that's happened then. We didn't hide anything from you"
You thought for a moment. He was right in a way. They visited often, weekly if your sense of time was right. You'd be informed of all the things your baby did at school, all the play dates she had and all the good grades she got.
"Sweetheart" you said, nudging your daughter.
She looked up and wiped her eyes.
"I'm awake now ok, and I'll be awake forever now. I heard everything you told me ok? I'm proud of you for being the best in your class, and I'm glad you had fun at Jessie's birthday party. I'll be there from now on ok?"
She smiled, hearing all the things she told you repeated back to her. It made her sure that you were always listening, even if you didn't reply.
"I missed you mummy" she said.
"I missed you too, you've gotten so big. And look at your hair, just as dark and thick as your dad. It's gotten so long"
"I'm growing it out! Daddy does my pigtails every day" she giggled.
"Yeah I'd be able to do them better if you actually sat still" L jumped in.
You giggled, glad that even without you they were still as close as ever. She always was a daddy's girl.
"If you heard me then did you hear daddy? Could you hear him talking to you? And sining to you?" She asked.
You smiled at your husband, giving his hand a squeeze.
"Yeah, I heard everything. Are you two sure you told me everything?"
L shifted, catching your attention.
"Well... there's one thing..." he said.
You immediately got worried. What had happened while you were out.
"That case is the last one I took... I got the boys to take over after I arrested the culprit. I do help them here and there but I haven't taken a case since. It was better that way, if I continued as L... I'd have no time to raise the only thing I had left of you..."
You were speechless. He quit being a detective? The job he loved so much? His huge legacy he'd built over so long, since he was a child. He just dropped it?
"But-"
"It was the only way I could be there to visit you, take her to school, be an involved father... my successors keep the legacy alive, and like I said, I do occasionally help out. But I just couldn't continue after everything that happened. I didn't want to put us in anymore danger" L explained.
You let that sink in. No more cases, no more legacy, no more... L. Of course L was still L, he'll always be L. But he wasn't... L anymore. It was so weird to think he left all that behind for you and your daughter.
You loved him so much, words could never express it.
"You're the best father you know that? Giving up everything you worked so hard for just to be there? I don't deserve someone as amazing as you..."
