Chapter 4 | L runs an errand

A/n: here's another persacom!L doodle I made based on some Chii art.

L had been learning well, he'd already gotten into the daily routine of getting up, getting changed and waiting for you to finish breakfast before going on with the day. As well as carrying out the night routine you'd taught him to a T.

After getting him some clothes that actually fit him, he was rather fond of picking out things easy to put on like loose jeans and plain shirts.

He'd been learning so well in fact, you decided it was time he went out by himself today. Starting easy, you decided to send him out to get some cereal from the nearest shop. You handed him the money, told him to keep it safe and sent him on his way. You'd admit you were a little worried, he wasn't exactly completely socially aware yet. But he needed to learn, and if other people could sent out their persacoms with no problems then surely L would be able to get used to it eventually.

With an image of the cereal you'd asked for in his data, he held onto the coin purse you'd given him with both hands, keeping it tight in his grip. He remembered were to go from the last time you took him out, and his built in GPS would take him right there.

The streets weren't too busy today, as it was the middle of the week and most people were at school or work. In fact there were more than a few persacoms out running errands for their owners too.

He turned into the shopping strip, and located the grocery store at the end of the street. Heading toward it, he had one goal in mind. Get the cereal and give it to you. As he walked down the street, holding onto his coin purse tightly he felt something bump into him, and he almost lost is balance.

"Oh sorry! Oh... a persacom" a voice said.

He stood up straight (well, a bit slouched) again, and was met with an older man carrying some shopping bags. He remembered what you'd taught him to do when accidentally bumping into someone, and bowed slightly.

"Sorry!" He said.

"That's alright, I should have been looking were I was going too" the man replied.

"(Y/n) says I have to say sorry when I make a mistake. Did I do right?" L asked.

"Yes you did, and... (y/n)? (Y/n) (l/n)?"

This man knew you? How did L not know him if he knew you?

"Yes, (y/n) is my owner" L replied.

"Oh so you're the new persacom I've heard about. I own the apartment building you two live in, I'm glad to see they're managing to work their new persacom so quickly" the man said.

"(Y/n) is teaching L lots of things so L can be a good helper!"

"L huh... interesting. Well I'm sure you'll be a great helper, I'll let you go do the shopping for them ok? And when you get back home tell (y/n) Mr Watari says hello"

Watari... that sounded familiar to L, but the name wasn't in his data. Again he had a weird sense of deja vu, like there was data he couldn't access but was locked away in his system.

"Ok, goodbye Mr Watari!" L smiled, waving him off.

Continuing on his way, he made it to the shop and using the instructions you gave him, bought the cereal you needed. He took it off the shelf, gave it to the cashier, gave them the amount of money they told him and took the bag to head home. Just like you'd taught him.

On the way back, he walked past many shops he remembered from when you bought him clothes. But stopped by a shop he didn't remember scanning last time he was out.

"Book... shop?" He questioned.

Inside were lots of books, and the sign read 'the book dispensary'. So he concluded it must be a book shop. He knew he had to go home, but he wanted to scan the bookshop into his data first, so he ventured in and looked around at all the books lining the shelves. There were so many on things he hadn't learnt yet, he wanted to pick them up and read them all to learn as much as he could. The more he learnt, the better a helper he could be.

He liked being a helper for you, it made him... feel.

It was odd for a persacom to feel. They were a computer after all, computers aren't meant to feel. But he did, he definitely felt things, although he wasn't very good at describing it and he didn't know why he could feel things when other persacoms can't. He assumed it must be his special AI that you'd told him was so amazing.

Wandering through the shop, he noticed a display rack with a stack of books on it that had interesting cover art. A night sky and long road, a panda bear walking down it.

The town with no people.

There it was again, that feeling of deja vu. Like he'd seen this book before, like the data about it was just out of his reach. He picked it up, and looked at the price sticker, $10. He flipped the book around to look for a blurb, but the back didn't have anything on it.

"L?" He questioned, using his name in place of a word for confused he didn't know yet.

It was unusual for a book to have no blurb, but for some reason he felt like he knew this book.

He wasn't sure what came over him, you hadn't instructed him to buy a book. But he did anyway, he used the remainder of the money you gave him to buy the book and continued on his way home. There was something about the book that just... called him.

When he finally got back, he opened the door to your apartment and kicked his shoes off.

"I'm back!" He announced.

"Hey! Well done L, that was pretty fast" you replied, putting down your laptop to go over and take the shopping from him.

He held out the bag for you, everything including the coin purse inside.

"Here you go (y/n). Also Mr Watari says hello!" He said.

"Oh you ran into him? I've been meaning to talk to him about some repairs on the ceiling fan actually..." you muttered, heading to the kitchen to put the cereal away.

L followed you, watching you take the box of cereal out and put it on the shelf. Feeling more weight in the bag, you reached in to see what it was, pulling out the book.

"Huh? Did you buy a book?" You asked.

"L bought a book, sorry" he replied.

"Oh it's ok, in fact you probably should read more to learn things. Just tell me next time ok?"

You handed him the book so he could read it, and he was glad to know you didn't mind.

"Ok, L will tell (y/n) when he buys a book" L agreed.

"Good boy, you're learning real fast"

As you put things away, L sat on the floor and opened the book to read it. The pages were filled with stars and the road from the cover continued across the pages, the panda bear walking down it.

In this city...there are no people.

The lights are on in all the houses. But there's nobody on the streets.

Are there people inside? I peek in a window to find out.

There are people. But they are with them.

I look in other houses. These people are with them, too.

This city is just like all the rest.

Being with them is fun. More fun than being with people.

Nobody comes outside anymore. There are no people in this city.

I will leave this city and go to another one.

I hope that I will meet someone. Someone just for me.

But if that special someone falls in love with me...

I will have to leave that someone.

Even so, I want to meet that special someone.

This is what I think as I leave the city with no people.

Putting the bag away in that one bag full of other shopping bags everyone had, you couldn't help but be feel rather proud of your new persacom. He was such a fast learner, his AI was absolutely amazing. You were so incredibly lucky to have found him, having a persacoms made day to day life a lot easier, like having a roommate to help out.

Turning to put the coin purse away, you were almost blinded by a bright light that hadn't been there before. Once you'd taken a second to adjust to the sudden light, you almost had a heart attack.

L, he was glowing... and it was almost like he was floating too. He seemed completely unaware of it, and just kept on reading his book.

"L? L! Are you ok? What's happening?" You exclaimed, rushing over to see what was wrong.

Had he broken something? Was he malfunctioning? He just looked up at you, and the glowing suddenly stopped and he was sat on the ground as if nothing had happened.

"L?" He questioned.

"Wha- how did..." you muttered.

How did he not notice what he'd just done? Since when could he glow like that.

"Wow I really need to get into your code..." you muttered.

Looking down at what he was reading, you were a little confused by the poem like writing and what the story was about. And why he picked this book in the first place, but if he was reading and learning, then what was the harm?

Whatever just happened seemed to not harm him, so maybe it was just part of his learning AI? You'd have to take up Misas offer to have Rem scan him, because you needed to get to the bottom of this.
