Chapter 18 | L's mystious origins
A/n: I bless you with another chobits art style persacom L. With his little book and jim-jams.
It was fascinating seeing all the things L could do when he had the right tools. With your latest pay, you'd bought him his own laptop, and taken it over to Near for help installing all the programs a persacom would find useful.
Near taught L how to use it, and all the programs on it, making sure to be careful to not surge anything with his massive power supply. And now L was taking his free time when you were out, or otherwise busy to plug himself into his laptop and study crime statistics so he could use the data to solve cases.
It was a smart idea he had, and you were pretty impressed with how well he was doing so quickly. He figured out if he downloaded data on crime statistics, he could use it to find the most likely situation in a case. And if the most likely option is ruled out, he can go the second, then third and all the way down the data until he found the solution. With his AI he could identify patterns and changes in behaviour in cases and suspects, and rule out possible leads that didn't go anywhere quickly.
He also quickly figured out that he couldn't have more than three chords connected at a time or he'd almost bust the hard drive. He was truly a force to be reckoned with...
So all morning you'd watched him sit at the kotatsu, a chord out of each ear port plugged into the laptop as he transferred data from the computer to himself. Soon he'd be able to start solving cases with all he'd learnt.
"Found anything interesting in all that data?" You asked, sitting down opposite him.
"Men are more likely to commit a violent crime, but the most common crime committed is theft in the form of shoplifting and pickpocketing" L replied.
"Can't say I'm surprised about the men part, but hey... I never really thought of his common theft is"
"Also the most common age rage for someone to commit a crime is in their 30s"
Already full of so many facts and statistics, L would make a great detective with his much information he can store. As he worked, you could hear the now very familiar soft electronic whirling that came from his inner computer. That noise meant he was processing something, you recognised it anywhere by now.
L seemed to be happy with his goal of understanding the statistics of crime, so you figured you'd let him work and you'd get some work done to. Although not regarding your job, you were off the clock and therefore you didn't have to give a shit about what was going on at work.
You wanted to keep looking into the chobits mystery, it was like your own little detective case. On your hunt for information with Nears help, you'd put everything together into a document so you didn't loose any information you'd learnt so far.
So far you knew that chobits were definitely real, L was proof. There was no way he WASN'T a chobit. You knew that multiple must have been made since the one in the photos that looked like L, wasn't him. Although it can't be that many made since L was the only working one found. The photos that were uploaded to the forums were hard to track down, Near was still having Matt and Mello work on that for you. The poster must have used a killer VPN or something. A password could be set on a persacom that would hide data and stop even the persacoms themselves from remembering what it was.
You also knew that chobits had a self learning AI, and seemingly massive amounts of power and storage space. Their outer design made to look as realistic as possible even down to things like eyebags, slouching, realistic hair and such.
All of this meant that the rumours and internet legends have to be somewhat true, because all of that could only be made by someone who had access to an insane amount of expensive materials and lots of power. They had to be fairly wealthy, incredibly skilled in computer science and engineering and have lots of time to work on them.
Your guess was that either it was someone who worked at a tech company that made them, or someone who happened to be pretty rich and was an inventor. Maybe both at the same time. That did narrow down the search for L's origins a bit, but there were a lot of smart rich people out there. If Near could get you the IP the pictures were posted from, you'd be one step closer to figuring this out.
What you really wanted to know though, was why. Why were the chobits made? And why was L tossed away? You just couldn't wrap your head around it.
As you pondered on all the information you'd gathered, a knock at your door broke you out of your daze. Getting up, you went to answer it and found Watari was the one at your door.
"Oh hey, we're not blowing the power out are we?" You said.
"Not this time, I see you and L have figured out how to make sure he doesn't blow a fuse this time" Watari said, looking over your shoulder at L who was typing away with his chords plugged in.
"He wants to become a detective, so he's collecting crime statistics"
"A detective hey? That's just like him... always wanting to help"
Watari seemed to have gotten to know L rather fast, then again he was the one that kept an eye on him while you were gone. But he seemed to know L rather well for someone who didn't live with him or see him daily.
"Yeah, L's determined alright. He'll be a good detective though" you smiled, looking over at your persacom who you'd grown to adore.
"That he will be. Anyway, I came because this was sitting outside your mail box. Perhaps it fell out or something? I'm sure you would have gotten it earlier if it was in there" Watari said, handing you a small package.
"Huh? I didn't order anything?"
The parcel was only about as big as a book, and had your name written on it. But no return address or identification of the sender.
"Perhaps someone from your work left it?" Watari suggested.
"Maybe... well, thanks. I guess I'll see what this is. And make sure my little detective over there doesn't surge the power" you replied.
With a few more friendly exchanges, you bid each other farewell as Watari has work to do running the building and you had a new mystery to solve. You sat at the kotatsu, and pulled the package open to find a file inside.
It didn't seem like something from your work...
You picked it up, confused and intrigued. Inspecting the yellow file you didn't see any writing on it, but there was a section where a sticker had clearly been pulled off. Opening it you were met with two documents printed on card.
Chobits 001
L Lawliet.
Adult Male.
black hair, pale skin, grey eyes.
Additional eyebags, slouch.
5.10"
Self learning AI.
Unlimited storage, connects to locked cloud network.
6 available languages, British accent.
Fully articulated.
Personal assistant, helper, son, twin.
If you had a drink you would have done a spit take. Was this a file on L? From the person who made him? While it was a little unsettling to think this person you didn't know knew where you lived, you were also practically vibrating in excitement seeing new information.
"L... didn't you say the persacom in your dream called you Lawliet?" You asked.
L looked up and over his laptop to see what you were reading.
"They did. What's that?" He replied.
"I think... it's your files" you replied, handing it to him.
As he read it, you read the second one.
Chobits 002
Beyond Birthday
black hair, slightly tanned skin, red eyes.
Additional eyebags, freckles.
5.10"
Self learning AI.
Unlimited storage, connects to locked cloud network.
6 available languages, British accent.
Fully articulated.
Personal assistant, helper, son, twin.
Was this the one in the photos? It seemed to be so. The description of the appearance was the same, and the detail about the red eyes again made you think of the persacom in L's dream.
We're they made to be someone's children? It says 'son' and 'twin' on both of the files. Perhaps L and this Beyond person were made to be brothers and the sons for someone who couldn't have kids. That would explain why chobits were so lifelike and realistic... because they were deigned to be in a family.
"Hmm... it looks like it is... but I have no data on any of this information" L said.
"What about this one?" You asked, handing him the second paper.
He read it over, looking for any data he had.
"No data... but... this one is like the persacom in my dream" L replied.
That settles it. Beyond Birthday had to be one one in the pictures and the one in L's dream, and L barely remembered anything because it was either erased from his data when he was tossed out or it's locked behind that password.
But it just gave you another why. Why did whoever gave you this want you to know? Why did they toss L away? And there was also a where... where was Beyond? Wouldn't he have been tossed with L?
L was made to be a helper, and a family member. So why would this mysterious person seperate the persacom meant to be his brother figure from him?
Every time you found an answer to something, it seemed to only lead to more questions.
