BREY's POV
I felt like the time suddenly stopped and everything went silent. My distance from my father wasn't that distant but I felt like it was so far that I couldn't get near him right away. When I heard the gunshot, I felt like my heart came out of my chest because of so much fear for my father.
"Papa!" I yelled when I saw him fall on the floor together with Nadia. Everything happened so fast. I felt like my body went numb because of what I've witnessed.
"If I can't get what I want, it's better for me to kill all of you! You've ruined my plans! You all took everything away from me so I'll make you pay dearly!" I heard Ophelia screamed like she already lose her sanity. She pointed the gun at my direction and was about to shoot me too but I quickly gathered myself together. That was the cue. I signaled my men who were just waiting for my signal. Before she had the chance to pull the trigger, Falcon came in and shot her hand that was holding the gun. After that, he quickly approached her and restrained her.
Thankfully, Falcon didn't miss. Well, Viper told me that he's a sniper and expert when it comes to grenades and guns.
Ophelia was screaming in pain as her hand bled but I didn't have the time to look at her. My whole attention was on my father that was lying on the floor while Nadia was on top of him, unconscious.
I hurriedly attended to them. My eyes widened when I saw all the blood. My father tried to sit up as he gathered Nadia in his arms.
"Oh, God, she's bleeding! Nadia, Nadia!" my father shook her shoulder but she was unresponsive. Her back was heavily bleeding. She was the one who got shot. Ophelia intended to shoot my father but Nadia saved him by hugging him. She took the bullet that was meant for him.
"Son, Nadia got shot! We need to bring her to the emergency room downstairs!" I didn't need to be told twice. I carried her onto my arms. Even though she unconscious, I could tell that she was in so much pain.
"Call the police and surrender this criminal to them!" I ordered Falcon, referring to Ophelia. He nodded his head. I looked at Ophelia full of rage.
"Look what you've done! You shot your own daughter!" I screamed at her full of hatred but to my surprise, she smirked. She looked unrepentant of what she just did and it shocked me. It wasn't the reaction that I was expecting from her after seeing her own daughter shot like that. Who could she remain calm and not panicking?
"I don't need her anymore anyway! You can have her for all I care!" that shocked me even more. I wanted to punch her face right there and then. How could someone be so cruel and cold blooded? She just shot her own daughter but she doesn't look affected at all.
"Do you want me to bring this woman to Viper? I think she needs to be taught a lesson." Falcon asked me and then gripped Ophelia's bleeding hand ruthlessly. Ophelia screamed in so much pain because of what Falcon did.
"You b*stard! Let go of my hand! Ahhh!" instead of listening to her, Falcon gripped her hand harder. Her screams became louder but I didn't feel sorry for her.
"It's okay. Just make sure that she won't escape. I want her to rot in jail!" I answered and was about to leave when Ophelia managed to speak as Falcon let go of her bleeding hand but still holding her still by the shoulder.
"You need to bring me too! My hand is bleeding! It hurts!" she yelled while trying to push Falcon from restraining her. I could see that her hand was already full of blood and she was in pain but I didn't feel any sympathy for her.
I didn't know how she managed to slip a gun with her. The police officers that were guarding her hospital room were unconscious too. Maybe, it was Nadia who gave her the gun because she wanted to help her escape by drugging the police men that were guarding outside the room.
I looked at Nadia's face. Maybe, she came here to the hospital to help her mother execute her other plans but now, her life was in danger because the person that she wanted to help shot her remorselessly.
I was about to tell her to f*ck off when I heard the panicking voice of my father next to me.
"Son, ignore her! We don't have much time! Nadia is heavily bleeding and unconscious! We need to bring her to the emergency room now!" I cursed under my breath. I forgot. I quickly went out of that room with long strides and then went straight to the elevator. My father was walking along with me. He looked so worried.
Before the elevator closed, I noticed that people at the hallway were panicking, maybe because of the gunshots that they heard.
"Nadia, sweetie, please wake up. Don't leave papa, please." My father's voice broke as tears began brimming his eyes. He was holding Nadia's hand.
I clenched my jaw. I couldn't believe of what just happened. I've never expected Ophelia to do this. She's gone too far. She even hurt Nadia. I knew that she's an evil woman but I expected her to be different when it comes to Nadia. But I was actually wrong. She was nothing but a coldhearted b*tch!
When the elevator opened, we hurriedly walked towards the emergency. The hospital staff attended to Nadia right away when they saw her state.
"If something happened to Nadia, I swear I'll kill Ophelia!" my father hissed in so much anger. This was the first time for me to see him angry like this. He's the type of person who can handle himself calmly in any type of situation. But now, he looked like he was about to explode in so much rage.
"Calm down, papa. Nadia will overcome this. I'm sure of that. She's a strong woman." I said, trying my best to calm him down. He sat on the chair nearby as if all his strength dissipated from his body.
"I don't know what to do anymore, Brey. This is all my fault. I was so occupied trying to fix everything in my life that Ophelia destroyed and I forgot about Nadia. I thought Ophelia would never hurt her but I was wrong." His voice was weak and full of regret.
I didn't know what to say. No one spoke for a few minutes until I decided to break the silence and ask about the thing that has been bugging since a while ago.
I sat on the chair next to him.
"Is it really true, papa? Nadia is not my sister?" his body stiffened for a moment. I heard him take a deep breath before he answered. His eyes were already reddish, indicating that he was about to cry but was just trying his hardest to toughen himself up.
"No matter what happens, I consider Nadia as my real daughter. I've never treated her like she's not mine ever since we adopted her." I gasped in surprise.
"S-She's adopted?" he smiled bitterly.
"Yes, son. We adopted Nadia when she was still a baby. Ophelia and I tried a lot of times to have a child of our own but her body couldn't handle it. She had three miscarriages and after that, the doctor prevented her to get pregnant again because that would be too dangerous for her. She couldn't accept that fact.
"She was so miserable and became even more insecure and jealous. Whenever I talk to other women, she would get so jealous. I tried to understand her because I knew that she was just scared because she couldn't give me a child. She admitted to me that she was scared that I might leave her. We seek for a psychologist's help in terms of her behavior and she recommended for us to adopt. Ophelia was so against it.
"But then, Ophelia's sister got pregnant but her husband died just before she gave birth and that affected her mentally. Olga, Ophelia's younger sister became mentally unstable because of what happened to her husband. She couldn't handle her loss. After she gave birth to Nadia, we had to send her to a mental facility because her condition got worst and already got out of hand. Because Ophelia was the only relative she had back then, we took care of her baby.
"During those first months that we took care of Nadia, I learned to love her dearly. I noticed that Ophelia didn't care about her niece that much and when I confronted her, she told me that she didn't want to share my affection. I got mad and reminded her that Nadia was the daughter of her sister and if she wouldn't treat her right, I would leave her. I was getting tired of her constant nagging and jealousy. From then on, I noticed her behavior towards little Nadia changed.
"But six months after Olga went to the facility, she escaped and disappeared without a trace. I tried to look for her but to no avail. That's when we decided to legally adopt Nadia. Surprisingly, Ophelia accepted her as her own daughter even though she was so against adopting at first. Maybe because she had been longing to have her own child that her heart softened. I saw how she loved Nadia and treated her as her own. But after what I've witnessed a while ago, I doubt that she really did love Nadia as her own daughter.
"Because if she did, she would never say those words after shooting Nadia. I thought she would be worried and feel guilty of what she has done but she wasn't nowhere guilty nor worried. I can't believe that I've been with a monster like her for many years."
I patted his shoulder to make him feel my support just like what he did when I was in the same situation.
"Everything will be alright, papa. I'm sure, Nadia will be fine." He looked at me and smiled appreciatively.
"I've discovered how joyful and enjoyable a fatherhood was because of Nadia. She made me feel complete. She came into our lives when we thought we could never experience how to be parents to a child. Yes, she's spoiled and a little bit uncontrollable sometimes but she's a nice girl most of the time. Even though she's hardheaded at most times, she never failed to listen to me whenever I tell her something. But lately, she changed a lot. She became a lot like Ophelia. Maybe because they were always together that she got brainwashed or something. Ophelia had a lot of time to teach her her twisted thoughts and beliefs. I couldn't stop that because I was always working and didn't have enough time for Nadia.
"But even so, I tried my best to give Nadia my time whenever I wasn't busy. I taught her the things that I thought would make her a good person but Ophelia influenced her more than I did. Nadia always looked up to her. Maybe if I only tried harder to distance her from Ophelia, this wouldn't've happened to her. It's my fault." His tears fell the moment he uttered those last three words.
"There's no use of blaming yourself now, papa. You should just be strong for her because she needs you right now." He wiped his tears and then nodded his head.
"You're right, son. I shouldn't blame myself because everything's Ophelia's fault! I will make sure that she will pay everything that she's done in jail!"
"Yes. That's what I wanted too that's why I made sure that she wouldn't escape her punishment easily by dying. She needs to stay alive and suffer the consequences of her actions. Death is too convenient punishment for her." I answered through gritted teeth.
I really wanted to kill her with my bare hands but I knew that Juno would never like that. Besides, I don't want to soil my hands with Ophelia's dirty blood.
"Yes. That's what she deserves; to rot in jail!" his palms balled into fists. I was about to answer when Ophelia's angry voice echoed inside the hospital. Police were now everywhere as they rolled her in inside the emergency.
"Just kill me now because if you don't, I'll make sure to come back and get my revenge to all of you!" she shouted when she saw me and papa. I could see the fury in her eyes. My jaw flexed in anger. And she even had the guts to threaten us after what she did!
I stood up and then approached her. She was still handcuffed on the hospital bed.
"Just be thankful that my men didn't kill you. Let me tell you this; I'll make sure that you will get what you deserve for all the pain and sufferings that you brought to my loved ones. Even if you want to, you will never have the chance to get out of jail until you die because you will rot there!" her eyes squinted in anger.
"Damn you! You can't do this to me! I am Ophelia Amouretti!"
"No, you're not an Amouretti anymore because the divorce is already finalized! Just a little bit longer and I'll get rid of your dirty name attached to my name! I regret the day that I met you, Ophelia! You're nothing but a sick conniving b*tch who only worships money!" my father, who was now standing next to me, shouted at her full of disgust.
Ophelia's face softened. Her eyes became innocent looking.
"I only did those things because of my love for you. I did everything so that you would learn to love me too but you never did. You made me feel like a rebound. When Nadia came to our lives, you made me feel useless even more by loving her as your own daughter.
"I tried to treat Nadia as my own daughter because that was what you wanted. I wanted to show you that I could love her so that you would love me too and stay. I did everything that you wanted but when you discovered that you have a son, you forgot about me again. You made me feel that even if we have Nadia, we're not enough for you.
"When Liza came back, you decided to divorce me. I just got hurt that's why I thought of getting back at everyone. You hurt me and I hurt you. We're just the same. We hurt each other. C'mon, darling. I am still your wife. We can fix this. I promise to change and make it up to you and Nadia. Just accept me again." My father didn't answer right away.
I got scared that he might give in and accept her but when he spoke, his answer made me feel at ease.
"Don't compare me to yourself, Ophelia. Yes, maybe I made a lot of mistakes too but that wasn't an excuse for you to hurt other people. Meeting you was the biggest mistake of my life. You ruined me and I regret our times together. If you didn't hurt Nadia, maybe I could still manage to forgive you but you did without even blinking an eye.
"Now, I finally understand that you've never loved her as your own daughter. You just used her to keep me by your side and I was so stupid for not noticing it. Because of your own doing, you lost everything." Upon saying that, my father turned her back on her.
"N-No. You're wrong. T-That was just an accident. I didn't mean to shoot her. C'mon, darling. Give me one last chance. I swear, I'll change. Don't do this to me." instead of answering, papa walked away quietly.
Ophelia kept on calling for my father but the nurses rolled her inside the emergency. She kept on thrashing and shouting but no one listened to her.
The doctor attended to her wound before they sent her back to her room. This time, the number of the policemen who were guarding her, doubled. I even instructed my other men to keep an eye on her as well.
We waited outside the operating room as the doctor removed the bullet from Nadia's back. After I didn't know how long, the doctor finally came out.
"She's out of danger now, Mr. Amouretti, but because of what happened to her, her spinal cord took a damage."
"W-What will happen to her now, doctor?" my father asked worriedly.
"There's a possibility that she will no longer be able to move and walk on her own." My father and I both gasped in shock.
"Is there any way to treat her?" I asked. the doctor shook his head.
"For now, I can say that there's only 30 percent chance of her to be able to move and walk again with proper rehabilitation. It's not that high but at least, it's not really hopeless. I'm sorry, Mr. Amouretti." When the doctor left, tears ran down from my father's eyes.
I on the other hand felt so bad for Nadia. I couldn't believe that this would happen to her. Even though we haven't had time to really know each other, deep inside my heart, I considered her my sister.
