BREY's POV
I looked at the view outside. It was already dark and the surroundings were already being illuminated by the lights around and the full moon. The gentle breeze of the evening air felt so good on my skin. Everything felt so calm. Normally, I would enjoy this kind of surroundings but my mind was wandering somewhere.
It had been two days since my father arrived and I noticed that he was keeping something from me. He kept on drinking alcohol during the night while staring into space. I knew that something was off because he never behaved like that before.
I've known my father for being a serious but strong man. He never lets his problem get the best of him. He always knows how to handle himself whatever the circumstances are. But now, I couldn't see that side of him. He's acting like a different person.
Ever since I met him, I've never seen him down like this. He looked vulnerable.
"Caro." I was pulled out of my reverie when I heard the sweet voice of Juno. She was looking at me with furrowed eyebrows while standing at the doorway.
"Yes, cara?" she strode her way towards me and then sat on my lap. She wrapped her arms around my neck while staring at me intently.
My arms went around her waist.
"You look like something's bothering you. You've been staring into space since a while ago. You couldn't even hear me calling for you." worried was evident on her lovely face. I heaved a sigh.
"Don't worry about me, cara. This is nothing." Her eyes suddenly squinted in anger.
"We've already talked about this! I thought no secrets between us?!" she was about to get off my lap but I didn't let her by tightening my arms around her.
I couldn't help but to get amused of her.
"You're so snappish lately. Is our little angel already here, huh?" I teased as I kissed her belly.
"I'm not joking around with you, Brey! Don't change the topic!" I chuckled. I only hear her call me by my name whenever she's mad or irritated. She was now glaring at me.
"Aw. I'm not your caro anymore?" her eyes squinted even more as her lips thinned. Now, I knew that I was really beginning to get on her nerves. I planted a soft kiss on her luscious lips.
"Hey, I'm just teasing you. C'mon, smile now, cara mia." I said sweetly and then looked at her with puppy dog eyes. Her face softened.
She heaved a sigh but her face suddenly became sullen. She looked like she was about to cry.
"Aw. Your mood changes like the weather lately. Don't tell me, you're---" before I could say what I wanted to say, she snapped at me.
"No! I'm not!" I couldn't hold back my laugh. She glared at me once again. I raised my hands, surrendering.
"Okay okay, you're not. Anyway, to answer your question, I'm fine. I was just wondering what's wrong with papa lately. He's been behaving weirdly since he arrived here and it's been bothering me." her expression softened.
"Why don't you ask him yourself? He's your father, caro." I sighed.
"I don't know how to approach him. Yes, he's my father but we've never shared any serious talks about our problems before." She cupped my face and then smiled at me.
"Then start now instead of staying here and keep on wondering about what he's feeling right now. There's always a first time, caro." I couldn't help but smile. She really knows what to say to make me feel better.
I rested my forehead against hers while looking into her tantalizing forest green eyes full of love.
"You're really my goddess. You always know what to say to make your caro feel okay."
"Of course. I'm your cara after all." Our lips met after that for a sweet kiss.
"I love you." I breathed after that kiss. I caressed her soft cheeks lovingly.
"And I love you too. C'mon, go and talk to your papa. I'll wait for you in bed." She got off from sitting on my lap and then winked at me. I laughed heartily.
"Of course, cara. Wait for me, okay?" she rolled her eyes.
"Yes. I'll wait for you. Go!" she even gently pushed me towards the door.
I went out of our room and then looked for my father but I couldn't find him anywhere.
"Emma, have you seen papa?" I asked Emma when I saw her. She was about to go out, probably going to the maid's quarter because her work for the day was already finished.
"I saw him entered in the pink room, signore." My eyebrows creased. We've been in the house for more than a week already but I've never knew that there was a pink room. Well, all the rooms were in different colors but I've never seen the pink room before.
"Where is the pink room?"
"It's in the third floor, signore. It's the only room there." Now I remember. I saw a room there but it was locked before. I thought it was just a cellar or something.
"Okay. Thank you." she smiled at me but her eyes were staring at me as if she wanted to tell me something.
"Is there something wrong, Emma?" she opened her mouth to say something but then no words came out. She then forced a smile.
"I think signor needs you right now, signore Brey. I'll go on ahead."
"Okay, Emma. Thank you again." I didn't know why but I was so sure that she wanted to tell me about something. I shook my head. Maybe, I was just giving too much meaning to her actions.
I hurriedly went to the third floor. When I arrived in front of the pink room, I knocked.
"Papa?" when I didn't hear any answer, I opened the door. It wasn't locked.
I stepped inside and closed the door behind me. I looked around just to have my forehead crinkled when I noticed what was inside. There was a king sized bed at the center of the room. It looked untouched.
There weren't many stuff inside but the room was beautiful. I looked around and something caught my eyes. It was the picture frames on top of the accent cabinet. The light in the room was dim that's why I couldn't take a good look of the pictures.
Out of curiosity, I was about to approach them to take a closer look when my father came out of nowhere.
"What are you doing in here?" he threw a glance at the picture frames. He suddenly looked tensed.
"C'mon, let's go out." He said before I could answer. He almost pushed me out of the room.
"Whose pictures are those, papa?" I asked the moment we got out of the room. He locked the door.
"Just forget about it." he heaved a sigh and then walked ahead of me. We were at the staircase when I remembered what I went there for.
"Can we talk, papa?" his steps came to a halt and looked at me in surprise.
"Sure." We went to the mini bar near the living room after that. He brought out a bottle of cognac and pour in two glasses. He gave me the other one.
"So, what do you want to discuss with me, son? This is the first time." he chuckled but it didn't reach his eyes.
I took a sip of my drink before answering.
"I don't know how to say this but---I've noticed that you've been acting weird since you arrived here. Is there a problem, papa?" he looked surprised for a second before he chuckled again.
"Don't mind me, son. It's just about the company."
"Don't give me that, papa. I know that something's off and it's obviously not about the company. Tell me what's your problem and I might be able to help you." we stared into each other's eyes as if waiting who would give up first. He was the first one who looked away and then heaved a defeated sigh.
"Fine, you got me. I came home here in Milan because it's too much for me to stay in the USA anymore. I needed to get out of there as soon as possible and this is the only place that could calm me."
"What happened?" he drank the content of his glass in one gulp before he answered.
"Ophelia and I's marriage is on the rocks." He took the bottle of cognac again and then poured in his glass.
His revelation surprised me. Even though I've never been together with them in one house, I knew that my father loved his family. They often go to many vacation trips. I thought he and his wife were a loving couple; a happy family with their daughter.
A tinge of pain occurred within me when I remembered those times when I used to hear his stories about their trips which always brought unexplainable negative feelings inside my chest. Damn! This is not about you, Brey!
I shook those thoughts away.
"How come?"
"Even before we met, me and Ophelia were already having a problem but it became even worst when she discovered that I've been seeing you; that I've finally found you." He looked up. He looked like he aged a couple of years.
"It became worst because of me? She couldn't accept me, is that it?" I felt like I tasted something bitter in my mouth. He stared at me with unknown emotions in his eyes.
"Ophelia had been very insecure ever since the beginning. I tried to give her all the love that I could give but she kept on telling me that it wasn't enough; that there was a part of my heart that I couldn't give her. She kept on asking for something that I couldn't give her no matter how hard I've tried." he chuckled humorlessly.
"Believe me, I tried really hard, son, but it wasn't enough. When I discovered that she hid the letter of your grandma from me, I forgave her because she told me that she didn't mean to hide it from me. She told me that she forgot about it and didn't have any idea that it was from your grandmother. But now, I discovered that she intentionally didn't let me know about it because she didn't want me to know about you." I gritted my teeth upon hearing that.
So, from the beginning, Ophelia couldn't accept me already. She didn't want me to be part of my father's life.
"I forgave her when she asked for my forgiveness about that but now, I've discovered that she'd been cheating on me for so long now and that is the thing that I could never forgive." When he uttered those words, a lone tear escaped his eye.
Even though he voiced that through gritted teeth, I could see the raw pain that passed through his eyes.
It hurt me seeing my father like that. This was the first time that I saw him in this kind of situation. My hand raised on its own and landed on his shoulder, comforting him.
I didn't know what to say to make him feel better so I chose to stay and be with him.
He drew a deep breath to calm his senses. Then after a minute or so, a bitter smile broke on his lips.
"Maybe I'm at fault too because she was right. I couldn't give her my whole heart. I tried but I just couldn't. It's hard to teach my foolish heart." my eyebrows creased.
"You don't love her?"
"I loved her, son, but I just couldn't teach myself to love her the way I've loved a certain woman in my past. Ophelia was always jealous and insecure about her. Throughout the duration of our marriage, she was always suspecting me of anything even though I wasn't doing something behind her back."
"I can't understand. Why did you marry Ophelia if you loved another woman?" I questioned confusedly.
"Because that woman left me and never came back." he looked at me with a faint smile before he continued.
"That woman is your mother, son." My body went still upon hearing that. I didn't expect that. But at the same time, that familiar hatred within me livened up. Hearing about her was the last thing I wanted.
"She was the only woman I gave my whole heart to but she just stomped on it like a rag. I was a big mess when she left me but Ophelia was there for me. She never left my side. Because of her, I learned how to overcome my depression. In my eyes that time, she was the perfect woman. She helped me move on."
"And you decided to marry Ophelia because she was the one who had your back during that time?" I asked with an almost inaudible voice.
"Yes but I tried my best to give her the attention that she wanted. I learned how to love her but for her, it wasn't enough. All my efforts were always not enough for her. She was so demanding and that became the problem in our relationship. She never once trusted me and believe my faithfulness to her. But now, after all those things that I gave her, I discovered that she didn't only lie to me but cheated on me as well." Every word that he was saying was full of pain and bitterness.
I was at lost for words. I drank my drink in one gulp.
No one spoke for a couple of minutes. We remained quiet until I decided to break the silence.
"What is your plan now, papa?" he drank the remaining content of his glass before he answered.
"I'll file a divorce." That didn't shock me because I was already expecting for him to say that. Well, it was the right thing to do.
I was about to comment when someone suddenly spoke behind us.
"So, is this the reason why you came here? To be with your bastard and leave us? How dare you take bastard in our own house?!" the angry voice of Ophelia echoed inside the house. She looked furious while glaring at the two of us. I could almost see her breathing fire.
Both my papa and I were surprised of the sudden turn of events.
We didn't expect to see her. Nadia was next to her, obviously mad as well.
"What are you doing here?" the cold voice of my father. He was looking at Ophelia as if he was staring to a stranger.
"Why would you question my presence in this house? This is also my house in case you already forgot!" she roared like a tigress.
"Get out. I don't want to see your face in my own house, Ophelia." My eyes widened when I heard my father's voice. He sounded different and I knew that he was beyond mad but trying his best to control his emotions.
"Your house?! This is my house too because I'm your wife! If there's someone who should get out of this house, that's your b*stard! How dare you let him in in my own house?! He doesn't have the right to even step inside my property!" I gritted my teeth. I wanted to wring her neck. After what she's done, she had the audacity to act like the victim.
She was looking at me as if I was a pest. How dare this woman say those things to me after what she's done?! My hands balled into fists.
I was about to retort at her when my father spoke.
"This is my house, Ophelia. If there's someone who doesn't have the right to be here, that's you."
"But I'm your wife!" my father shook his head.
"Not anymore because I'll file for a divorce as soon as possible." I saw Nadia's eyes widened in shock. Her mouth fell open.
"P-Papa, what are you saying?"
"Nadia, this got nothing to do with you. I made up my mind. Your mother committed an unforgivable mistake." he turned his back.
"I don't want to see your face in my house again, Ophelia. Get out." He said and then walked away. I was left standing there in front of the two women, wasn't sure what to do.
Ophelia was already crying so was Nadia. I approached Nadia, intending to comfort her.
"Nadia, I---" before I could say whatever I wanted to say, her palm landed on my cheek.
"Don't ever come near me! This is your fault! If you haven't come into our lives, my parents would never get a divorce! Remember this; I am the only legitimate child of papa and mama! You're nothing but a b*stard! You don't have the right to the Amouretti fortune!" I clenched my jaw, trying to hold back my anger and not to shout at her.
"You will pay for this! This is all your fault! You're the reason why my family got destroyed so I will do the same to you! You're the same as your b*tch mother! You both are nothing but thorns in my throat! But just like what I did to her, I will bring you down!" Ophelia spat at me full of hatred before they marched their way out of the house.
I didn't know what happened. Everything happened so fast but I understood one thing. Even though I already forgot the existence of my mother, the family that I was expecting to accept me would never do so. Every painful things that happened to me were all because of her.
Now, my own sister would never accept me because her family got torn apart. Even though Ophelia committed a sin; in the eyes of Nadia, it was my mother and I's fault.
