Eliza stayed still as a sharp sword was pointed at her her back. She stood at the edge of the plank, staring at the deep blue ocean beneath her.

"Any last words traitor?" The captain sneered. She had found the long lost mermaid they were looking for, the one who would bring them fame and fortune if they captured her. Yet she refused to tell her "crew" because she fell for the beautiful mermaid and couldn't bare to see her get hurt. And now she was paying the price.

Eliza turned around, a cocky grin planted on her face. "Actually, I do have a few last words" She cleared her throat. "Fuck you" she chuckled, giving the captain the middle finger before gracefully diving into the ocean, landing with a big splash

Kyra let out a large, audible gasp as she saw the only crew member who really understood her fall into the water. Without thinking, she ran towards the ocean and jumped in. As Eliza fell towards the ocean floor, she swam down, her legs slowly turning into a tail as she swooped her arms underneath Eliza's body and carried her back to the surface.

As Eliza resurfaced, she spluttered out the water filling her lungs. Kyra let out a sigh of relief, swimming away from the ship with Eliza in her arms. Eliza eyes drifted open as she tried to blink away the sea water. Only then did her eyes meet Kyra's.

"What the heck are you doing?!?" She asked, panic and slightly annoyance in her voice.

"You're welcome" Kyra rolled her eyes. "I just saved your life and I get no thanks in return"

Eliza looked at her with confusion written all over her face. “Wait a minute...how are you not treading water?” She asked. Before Kyra could answer, Eliza glanced down into the water to see a bright green mermaid tail and all of a sudden memories came flooding into her mind.

Flashback

The thunderous claps of lightning and thunder echoed throughout the area. Wind blew vigorously around the ships sail, creating enormous, vicious waves that crashed down onto its deck. The captain of the ship bellowed orders to crew as another clash of thunder could be heard behind him. He suddenly noticed Eliza standing in the middle of the ship almost entranced by the sheer height of the wave about to crash down onto them.
“Eliza! Get below deck now it’s too dangerous!” He shouted.

Eliza quickly turned, waking from her trance, and headed towards the door but before she could leave she spotted one of her crew mates about to be submerged by an incoming wave: it was Kyra.

“Hey look out!!” She screamed but it was too late. The wave had already pulled her into the sea. Eliza and the captain raced over to the side of the ship. Eliza looked down into the water desperately trying to find her crew mate...but she found nothing. Strangely the sea began to calm, the wind stopped and the sounds of thunder disappeared. Eliza looked around with worried eyes desperately trying to find Kyra, that was until she caught a glimpse of a...no it couldn’t be...is that a mermaid tail?

“Here!” She was interrupted by shout behind her. She turned around to see Kyra being hauled back onto the boat. She fell to her knees gasping for air, she looked exhausted.

“Are you ok?” Eliza questioned worryingly

“Yeah- I’m fine” Kyra gave her a small reassuring smile

Eliza caught her quickly hiding a necklace around her neck, one in the shape of a trident. “That’s strange, why would she have a trident necklace? Pirates hate Atlantians” she thought to herself

Present moment

Eliza gasped loudly “It was you! You were the mermaid I saw that day” Kyra smiled in agreement. “Wait...that necklace I saw...are you an Atlantian?”

Kyra giggled, she waved her hand and created a beautiful replica of a trident made of water. “My name is Kyra, daughter of Poseidon, Demigod of the sea”.

The pirates all peered over the edge, their eyes widening in shock and fury. "It's the mermaid! Get her!" The captain yelled as the pirates rushed over, throwing their nets overboard.

"Don't do this!" Eliza yelled at them, still in Kyra's warm arms. "Don't hurt her"

"I've got this" Kyra gracefully waved her hand and the water materialised into the trident. Eliza gazed at it with awe and shock as Kyra slammed it down on the water, causing a great wave to wash over the boat.

The crew started to panic, Eliza included as she once again started to be submerged under water. "Hang on I've got you" Kyra waved her hands as a deep red tail wrapped around Eliza's legs.

Eliza gazed down in awe. "Are these? Am I?"

Kyra nodded. "Well you seem to enjoy drowning so I thought I'd help you out" she giggled. "They're not permanent but if you want, we can live in the sea together"

Eliza nodded with a smile. "Yeah I'd like that" her hand fumbled to meet Kyra's as the two dived down into the ocean together.
