The Content Stage: Enter Art Attempts!

Hey guys! It's been a few days since my last post so I thought I'd show you all what I've been up to.

As the game stands right now, I am almost out of important things to program. I've managed to implement to some extent the major features and I'm running out of things to do that aren't very visible changes in the game. What does this mean? It means I've hit what I like to call the "content stage".

When a game reaches this point, all there really is to do to is... well make it what you want! With basic support of everything in, you can start strapping in stuff as fast as you can handle: in my case messans, blocks, and the like. This is the super fun part of making a game (unless you actually really like programming like me), but it does have some risks.

One of the main risks that I worry about is idea overload. In previous projects, I had built the bones of a game, then either decided "this idea sucks" or "I don't know which way to take this game." Now, I do really like this game idea, so I'm not as worried about the first point, but the latter is a point to watch out for as I tend to be rather indecisive. Hopefully talking to people about the game will help me figure out those though :)

Another problem is getting the assets to implement in the first place. Let's face it: art takes time, and it also takes a certain degree of skill. Pixel art is a little easier than other forms for people like me, so that's good. Also I have certain people in my life who are willing to help with that, so some of the mons you see coming up are actually designed by girlfriend in particular (hint hint, the ones that are like actual animals). The tiles I've found I can manage though, so it's more of a matter of sitting down and drawing tons of sprites that is the main thing holding the project back at this point.

That said, this is where the fun truly happens! This is the exciting part where designs can be made and can come to life right in front of your eyes! That's not to say there aren't the challenges mentioned above, but hey, it's worth it. I have lots of ideas in the works, but for now I will work on them in secret... Muhahaha!!!

Without further adieu, let's see some gameplay and sprites!

Just a basic scene that you can expect yourself in the main world. Note that no art is final (especially those trees smh).

Two player: a thing that works! Also a thing that is rather confusing when you're both using the same sprite. The biomes aren't very populated with stuff yet and are rather bland, but I'll be working on that soon.

Standing underwater... because logic.

The two possible starting mons pitted against each other. Don't worry, we'll have better pun based concepts to come, just felt like dogs and cats were a good thing to set the player off with :3

My sprite had some... fun with the mining and placing features of the game.

And finally, here's some extra concept messan art for you all.

That's all for today, see you all next time and feedback in the comments is always appreciated!
