Chapter 4: Perspective
Kuroshitsuji Writing Guide: Chapter 4:
Perspective:
First Person:
This is probably the most common perspective used to write Kuroshitsuji fanfiction on this website. It is where the story is shown directly through a character's viewpoint and everything is portrayed as that character sees.
The pronouns used are "I", "my" and "we".
Limitations:
· The reader only experiences the thoughts and feelings of one character.
· Events can only be described through the perspective of that one character which can limit the story in some cases.
· Other character's actions have to be described as how that character perceives them.
Having multiple character narratives is also common to Kuroshitsuji fanfics on Wattpad. It can be seen as a sign of a weaker writer as it suggests they cannot manage to portray the story through one character.
What not to do when writing in First Person:
· Start every sentence with "I", "my" or "we".
· Change character perspective every other line – this is fairly common to see on here and it is painful to see because it makes the writing flow badly.
· Slip in third person all of a sudden- this can also be seen in badly written first person stories.
Second Person:
It is very unusual to see in fanfiction unless it is a reader one. The main character is referred to using "you." The other related pronouns are "your" and "yours".
Limitations:
· Overuse of "you".
· It is difficult to sustain a long story in second person due to the narrative.
· Limited to showing only events related to the character.
Third Person:
It is not as commonly seen in the Kuroshitsuji fandom on Wattpad as first person. It is more frequently found on other fanfiction sites like AO3 and fanfiction.net.
This perspective is the best to use in a story as it does not limit the writer to telling the story from one character's perspective. The most used pronouns are "he", "she", "it" and "they".
Third person perspective is split into two categories: third person limited and third person omniscient.
Third person limited is when the events are all from one character's perspective. It is like a less limited version of first person perspective.
Third person omniscient is when the events are from a narrator that sees and knows everything. This is most commonly used in books where events not related to the main characters can be described.
Limitations:
· Can seem less intimate than first.
· More challenging to write.
