Chapter 5

Kuroo tugged on the sleeves of the shirt Oikawa had picked out for him, staring suspiciously at the material as he recalled the mischievous and teasing lilt to his voice when he explained how it was the perfect outfit to wear to the fair in their world. He did not trust that one bit, knowing but unable to prove that the brunet had an ulterior motive in dressing him in the outfit he picked out.

With a sigh Kuroo released the sleeves, turning to look in the mirror as he ran a hand through his hair. "So just to be clear, this 'fair' will have food and stalls with games, yes?"

Oikawa swatted Kuroo's hands away from his hair, slipping black rimmed glasses onto Kuroo's nose before grabbing his wrist to tug him towards the door of his bedroom, ignoring the rapid blinking of the other as he tried to adjust his eyes to the glasses. "There may also be bands, performers, rides, and possibly a firework show in the evening. I haven't been to this one before so I'm not entirely sure what it will have."

"Took you guys long enough." Iwaizumi scoffed when the duo entered the communal area of their apartment. "What, was spending the entire morning gossiping not enough time? Had to squeeze in a couple more rumors so that we would end up 'fashionably late'?"

Kuroo smirked at the grumpy man, tossing an arm over Oikawa's shoulder. "I was just testing To- Oikawa's resolve for you to be his 'one and only'. He was pretty adamant this morning but I figured I'd give it a go. I am very persuasive after all."

"Get off me."

Kuroo released Oikawa with a snicker and a step back, glancing at the eye roll from Iwaizumi, not missing the slight clenching of his jaw. Hmm, interesting. I know I have to act like the original Tetsurou from this realm if I want to return home but that doesn't mean I can't have a little bit of fun. Besides, it seems like he isn't much different from me, anyways, if their reactions are anything to go by.

Oikawa glanced at the smug satisfaction on Kuroo's face, an idea popping into his head. "Bokuto! We're ready, let's go!" The muffled sounds of movement came from down the hall right before a door opening and the appearance of Bokuto. When the other man entered the communal area Oikawa shot Kuroo a wink before turning to the newcomer with the face of innocence. "Bokuto, do you like Kuroo's outfit? Doesn't he look super good?"

Would it be out of character for this Tetsurou to murder this Tooru? Kuroo managed to hide his glare in time, glancing away from Oikawa to take in the way Bokuto froze in the doorway, eyes wide and mouth agape as he stared at Kuroo with reddening cheeks.

"Uh - pretty - I-I mean - good. You look good, Kuroo." Bokuto cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck as he avoided eye contact with the other three for a moment before shifting the topic. "Are you guys ready to go?"

"Yup!" Oikawa beamed, hanging back for a second as Bokuto and Iwaizumi walked into the front hall to put their shoes on. The brunet dropped his smile and turned to glare at Kuroo, tugging his bicep so he could whisper menacingly into his ear. "Listen up, I don't care what your relationship is with the Bokuto from your world, do not let it affect how you interact with this one, got it? He isn't your Bokuto, think of him as a stranger. Be kind to him, he is very sensitive and...and he also really likes our Kuroo so you hold a lot of power over him." Oikawa squeezed his bicep harder, his voice becoming more threatening. "If you hurt our Bokuto as some twisted way to lash out against your Bokuto I'll show you that sometimes humans are the most monstrous creatures of all."

Oikawa released his arm, patting it twice with a serene smile before skipping after the other two and leaving Kuroo to gape at his back. The displaced Demon Lord shook his head to clear his mind, slowly trudging after his temporary roommates. He slipped his shoes on and followed the other three in a slight fog, hearing but not understanding the light conversation the others were having. Kuroo vaguely heard Bokuto mention his name and understood that Oikawa gave some half-ass excuse about him still being messed up from the party the previous night, feeling a twinge of gratefulness that despite his constant antagonizing of the brunet, Oikawa was still willing to help him.

Maybe I should cut him some slack...

Or, maybe I definitely shouldn't.

Kuroo miraculously managed to not act on his homicidal urges despite the desperate wish to eradicate Oikawa for his latest stunt. The brunet was pointedly ignoring the murderous glare from the displaced demon lord, choosing instead to cozy up to Iwaizumi and not deal with the aftermath of his meddling.

Bokuto kept glancing between Oikawa and Kuroo, his puzzlement clear on his face. He tilted his head towards Kuroo, speaking low enough so that Oikawa and Iwaizumi would not hear him. "Hey, do you want me to tell him to cut it out?"

He was, of course, referring to Oikawa's recent demand to check out the haunted house attraction and his subsequent comment about how he hopes it doesn't upset Kuroo, seeing as he is scared of ghosts, demons, and the supernatural. Kuroo knew this was not true, not only for himself but also the Kuroo of this realm. This was further confirmed when Oikawa mentioned how Kuroo was really good at putting up a front about his fears so no one would know, shooting a wink at Kuroo. Oikawa successfully backed Kuroo into a corner with no clean escape. He could argue against being afraid but then he would look like a petulant child. His only other option was to play along and pretend to be scared but putting up a front of bravery, however that would incite Bokuto to cozy up to him...a true lose-lose.

Kuroo sighed, granting this knock off version of his mortal enemy a small smile. "It's okay, Bo. He's just being his natural self." The demon lord paused, brow furrowing at the natural way the nickname came to him.

Bokuto frowned. "Still, I want you to have fun today and doing something that scares you doesn't seem like the best way to achieve that." Seemingly having made up his mind, the human owl called out to the couple a few yards ahead of them before Kuroo could stop him. "Hey, Iwa! Oikawa! We are going to skip out on the haunted house, you two go on ahead."

Oikawa turned around with a sharp grin, eyes boring into Kuroo. "Oh? Did Kuroo convince you to join him in sitting out? How cute of you, Kuroo, indirectly asking to spend one on one time with Bokuto."

Iwaizumi snorted, the sound making Kuroo bristle. "He probably doesn't want to get homesick seeing his brethren from hell."

He wasn't completely wrong, Kuroo would give him that. Although he doubted the authenticity of the appearances of the demons in the haunted house.

Knowing he was walking into a trap either way, Kuroo refused to take it lying down. He matched Oikawa's grin, meeting his challenging stare with his own mocking gaze. "Oh, don't misunderstand me. I am just a bit tired of seeing Oikawa's face after spending the morning with him and it seems counterintuitive to then go into a house full of his look alikes."

The offended squawk he got from the brunet was most definitely worth it.

Oikawa narrowed his eyes, a scathing retort clearly on the tip of his tongue. Sadly it would not live to be spoken aloud because Iwaizumi chose to step in and break up the squabble before it could escalate further. He didn't say anything, he just laced his arm with Oikawa's and tugged him away from the other two and towards the haunted house. Oikawa glanced over his shoulder to stick his tongue out at Kuroo one last time before he ceased his struggling and allowed Iwaizumi to manhandle him.

Once they were left alone it took Bokuto a minute before he cleared his throat, avoiding Kuroo's gaze when he turned his attention to him. "So, uh, what do you want to do instead?"

I want to go home, Kuroo swallowed the homesick bile that rose in his throat at the thought before it was replaced by a new idea. Well, I do need to learn more about this place if I am going to survive long enough to return home...and I can't rely only on this Faux Tooru to help...

Repressing the shiver that wanted to go down his spine, Kuroo tossed an arm over Bokuto's shoulder, painting a smirk on his face. "My head is still soupy from last night so nothing too crazy. How about we pretend I am, say, a demon lord from another realm that got trapped here and I need to know more about this universe and its culture if I want to blend in long enough to be able to return to my home realm? And you are my gracious host, giving me a rundown of how things work here?"

The displaced demon feared he had gone too far when Bokuto blinked blankly at him for a moment and was about to laugh it off when the other man broke out into a blinding smile. "Dude! That sounds like so much fun! Hell yeah!" It was Kuroo's turn to blink at his companion, fighting the strange sensation in his stomach when he saw the smile from his alternate enemy. Bokuto didn't seem to notice Kuroo's stupor, instead choosing to copy Iwaizumi and lace his arm with Kuroo's. "Is that what you and Oikawa were talking about all morning? Is he also doing the same thing with Iwaizumi? I bet you guys got the idea from one of his sci-fi shows, huh?"

All Kuroo could do was give a wobbly smile and a nod in return, following in Oikawa's footsteps and allowing himself to be manhandled and dragged around the fair as Bokuto played along with his suggestion and rambled on about what he thought to be relevant information on his world. Unfortunately Kuroo was only half paying attention to what the humanoid owl was yapping about. The other half of his mind was used for analyzing and cataloging how this body reacted to any and everything Bokuto did, the fear and apprehension rising within his soul.

"I will help. But only if you confess your feelings once you return. It is getting painful watching the two of you . "

"I am not above kicking you and lover boy here out."

He had tried to deny it all morning but it was becoming alarmingly clear what was happening. And the way that his current body responded was the final nail in the coffin for him.

Human Kuroo Tetsurou is in love with Bokuto Koutarou...

Kuroo glanced up from where his vision had been trained on their entwined hands and to the faint color on Bokuto's cheeks.

And Bokuto Koutarou loved him back.

The demon lord bit back a malicious grin, imagining all the fun he could have now that his suspicions were confirmed. Really, the possibilities were practically endless and he was excited to explore them all.

"If you hurt our Bokuto as some twisted way to lash out against your Bokuto I'll show you that sometimes humans are the most monstrous creatures of all."

That recollection from his earlier conversation with Oikawa made him pause, a strange sense of guilt worming its way through his body. Kuroo shook his head, tuning out the nagging voice in his mind that told him to play nice, that told him if he drew suspicion to himself he may never return home.

Oikawa hadn't believed him when he said he wasn't this realm's original Kuroo Tetsurou so it was safe to assume that others would not believe he wasn't him either. And even if Oikawa tried to retaliate and tell the world who he truly was, nobody would believe the brunet and it would be Oikawa facing the ramifications of outing him, not Kuroo.

This time Kuroo couldn't hold back the amused laugh that bubbled up his throat, satiated by the thought that he could turn this boring world into one of entertainment and chaos for himself should he feel the need to.

And listening to Bokuto continue to describe life in this world (while also ignoring the near constant butterflies in his stomach and the way his skin burned at any point of contact with the other man) Kuroo decided that the time to wreak havoc may be sooner rather than later.
