Chapter 31 - In the City of Mathura - Part 1

Just in the outskirts of Mathura, Krishna asked Akrura to go his way. "We want to see the city first." Krishna said as his eyes were twinkling as he saw the beautiful city of Mathura from afar. "We will join you at Kamsa's palace, after meeting all the people."

"But the king..." Akrura started. He stopped talking as Krishna said nothing and just silently watched him. Akrura just knew that talks were useless as he walked away from the place leaving the two boys alone.

Akrura went to the palace of Kamsa and told the king that the sons of Vasudeva were coming as soon as possible. (In some Puranas, it has even been mentioned that unable to be separated from Krishna, the Gopas followed Krishna and stayed outside the city of Mathura.)

Mathura was an exquisitely beautiful place. With its high gates and crystal doorways, the city had archways made of pure gold. The storehouses (presumably places to store grains) were made up of copper and brass. The entire place was surrounded by parks and beautiful gardens. The halls and balconies were decked with gems, diamonds, quartz, sapphires, corals and every pearl sending dazzling colours.

The two boys were thrilled as they saw everything. And from their homes, the people saw the two boys too. The people in Mathura were stunned on seeing the two boys – one of whom was darker than the night and the other was fair. Both the boys were extremely handsome and they had that raw charisma – an unbridled passion in their eyes which caught the eyes of almost all the people in the city.

The people stared at the two boys unable to take their eyes off them. It is said that the women in the place were so shocked on seeing the two boys that they just came out of their homes without proper makeup or some even wearing their dresses upside down and they just kept staring at the two boys.

Unfortunately, the charms of the boys did not work on all the people. Krishna saw a washerman in the banks of a river and asked for some of the clothes from the man, to wear them. "We are going to meet the king." Krishna said in a pleading voice. "We need clothes to wear. The clothes that you have washed looks like royal clothes. Can you please lend them to us."

The washerman looked at the two boys and snarled. "These are the clothes of the king. There is no way, I am handing anything to you." The washerman waved the boys away. "Go away before I call upon the guards saying that you are disturbing me."

Krishna tried once more, but the washerman was stubborn.

Sighing they turned when a weaver who was watching the entire scene came forward hesitatingly. "I have some clothes with me." He told the two boys. "I can give it to you."

Krishna laughed in glee as the weaver led them to his house and there the weaver used up all the clothes which he had and dressed up the two boys – to his hearts fill.

It was said that Krishna looked mesmerizingly beautiful after the weaver was done with his work.

Now the two boys walked again when he saw a friend of his called Sudama –a garland maker. Sudama had been unable to stop himself as he handed over two of his garlands to the boys to be worn. It is a said that on wearing the garlands, the two boys looked dizzyingly handsome.

That was when the two boys spied a shy figure in a background – a shy hunchbacked figure.
