Chapter 21 - Vatsasura and Kabithasura

The children of the Gopas took the calves for grazing in the forest and as the calves grazed, the children played their games and had the time of their lives.

But unfortunately for the Gopas, their ploy had not worked.

Kamsa was now beginning to get very worried. Putana and Trinavartha were both powerful asuras and both had just vanished – without a trace. And there was also the prophecy of the eighth child of Devaki which was looming over his head.

As he saw the Gopas shift their residence from Gokul to Vrindavan, he was now more or less sure that there was something worth his attention in the village of Vrindavan.

He called two of his minions – Vatsasura and Kabithasura and asked them to handle the children of Vrindavan.

Vatsasura and Kabithasura were very powerful because they could both change their form at will.

*******

Vatsasura traveled to the forests of Vrindavan and there he approached the playing children. Vatsasura saw a dark child in the middle of it – a natural leader with playful eyes. Vatsasura knew then almost immediately that this was the child whom Kamsa wanted him to take care of.

He looked at Kabithasura and nodded.

*********

The boys were playing with each other happily under the wood apple tree.

That was when one of the calves started acting up.

The calf was trying to butt anyone who was coming close to it. And it was even hurting the other calves.

The children just did not know what to say and were shocked. Because until just a few seconds everything had been fine. But the calf was becoming unruly and was almost destroying anyone who came close to it.

One of the Gopa child came forward and tried to catch the calf, when Krishna pushed the child back. Gone was Krishna's playful eyes. Now, he was just blazing with sheer anger.

The calf snorted and charged at Krishna.

Krishna pulled the calf by the horns and pushed it back angrily, making sure that he pushed the unruly calf away from the other children and the other calves and nearer to the wood apple tree.

The calf fell back and for a second its face was lined with anger. Its face radiated hatred as it charged again.

The Gopa kids screamed and tried to come forward but Balarama pushed them back.

As the calf charged, Krishna stayed in its path.

At the last minute as the calf was almost onto him, Krishna step sided as the calf whizzed passed him.

Not giving the calf anytime to recover, Krishna caught the calf by its tail and he was so powerful that he whirled the calf round and slammed it on the wood apple tree.

The Gopa kids were in for a shock as a loud bestial growl emanated form the calf.

A scream emanated from the calf as it fell on the tree hard. One of the wood apples fell on the calf and smashed on the ground.

But the Gopa kids were in for a bigger shock. As the calf screamed, it changed form and it was not just the calf which changed form. The wood apple which had fallen down also changed form.

Krishna was looking furious at the calf waiting for it to charge again as Balarama pushed the other boys back.

Vatsasura, the calf demon and Kabithasura who was disguised as the wood apple fell back hard and they changed into their natural forms.

The force with which Krishna had hit the calf on the tree was sufficient to kill the two asuras as they fell lifeless on the ground.

For the second the Gopa children looked at the dead asuras who were now in their original hideous forms, and then they looked at Krishna, who was giving out a blazing anger as he was studying the dead asuras.

That was the time, the Gopa children children realized that probably this son of Yashoda was not just their playmate.

There was a lot more to Krishna than what met the eye.

(The Bhagawat Purana does not mention whether Vatsasura was sent by Kamsa or not. This version that he was sent by Kamsa is from a folk story. The folk story also mentions about Kabithasura who changed into the wood apple.

Kabithasura is not mentioned anywhere in the Purana.)
