Chapter 2 - Hastinapur

With the completion of his education, Krishna started helping out in the administration of the kingdom. And that was when Krishna first noticed the kingdom of elephants or Hastinapur.

(There could be three reasons for why Krishna was so anxious about Hastinapur.

The simplest reason for Krishna's interest in the kingdom of Hastinapur could be Kunti.

Kunti was the mother of the Pandavas and she was originally called as Prutha.

She was the biological daughter of Surasena. So, in reality, Vasudeva – Krishna's father and Kunti were siblings. It was just that Prutha was given in adoption to King Kuntibhoja when she was very young, which was why, Prutha was renamed as Kunti.

So naturally, Krishna felt it right to be interested in Kunti and the Pandavas.

And the reason, why Krishna was interested was obvious.

Kunti was definitely in hostile territory in the kingdom of Hastinapur.

Kunti was the wife of Pandu, who was the younger brother of Dhirdarashtra – a man who was born blind.

It was because Dhirdarashtra was blind, the throne of Hastinapur was given to the younger Pandu.

Pandu was a great ruler, but unfortunately, he had killed a sage while he was hunting in the forest. So to atone for his sins, Pandu gave up his throne and went to live in the forests with his two wives – Kunti and Madri.

In his absence, Dhirdarashtra ruled the kingdom of Hastinapur.

In the forests, Pandu became the father of five sons – the Pandavas – the eldest of whom was Yudhishtara.

In the kingdom of Hastinapur, Dhirdarashtra became the father of a hundred sons who were called as the Kauravas, the eldest of whom was Duryodhana.

The twist in the tale was that Yudhishtara was elder than Duryodhana.

After the death of Pandu in the forests, Kunti came back to the kingdom of Hastinapur for the better upbringing of her sons.

Naturally, Dhirdarashtra and Duryodhana did not like this. Dhirdarashtra was partial towards his son and did not treat the sons of Pandu fairly.

It was because of this, that Krishna was interested in the Kingdom of Hastinapur.

Another reason could obviously be that Krishna rarely saw himself as a king. He was a kingmaker.

He realized that the Pandavas needed his help and that having them as an ally could further strengthen the Yadavas.

The third reason is that Krishna, as an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on earth for one purpose – complete annihilation of the warrior class.

It is believed that it was Krishna's job to make sure that the entire warrior class which was in existence at that time had to be destroyed with the end of the third era so that things could be reset for the start of the fourth era or the Kali Yuga.

It is believed that Krishna knew that Arjuna – the third Pandava was going to be the instrument, through which Krishna was going to achieve that objective.

Hence Krishna's interest in the kingdom of Hastinapur.)

Krishna sent Akrura to the kingdom of Hastinapur to observe the place.

Akrura understood Krishna's intentions and observed the kingdom and told Krishna that things were not well at Hastinapur.

(Before this, one scene must definitely be mentioned, which is of the people of Vrindavan.

After beginning to help out in the administration of his kingdom, Krishna realized that he could never go back to Vrindavan. His work would just not give him any free time.

It is said that he called his friend – Uddhava, to go and talk to the people in Vrindavan and tell them that he missed them terribly. But despite that, he could not come and meet them, because he just did not have the time for it.

Krishna supposedly told Uddhava to tell the Gopas to completely forget about him so that he could carry out the work that he was actually meant to carry out.

Dutifully, Uddhava went to the Gopas and gave them Krishna's message.

The message was said to have broken the hearts of the Gopas.

They were angry at Uddhava.

They supposedly told Uddhava that Akrura had been wicked and had taken away Krishna from them. But Uddhava was worse, because he was even taking away even the memories of Krishna, which they had.)
