Chapter 4
Manami's POV
All the pirates were busy laughing, eating and drinking together. But I couldn't bring myself to plaster a smile on my face and act like I was okay. I resorted to lying on the roof of the room where everyone was having fun.
I can't believe I was so happy about solving my mystery! It just makes my situation worse. Now I really don't know what to do.
Natsu was always there to help me whenever I was feeling down, but now I didn't have anyone to pat my head and tell me, "everything's going to be okay!"
Every thought led to him. No matter how much I liked Yona and her group of friends, I couldn't completely forget how scared I really was. How terrified I was that I would never see my brother again or anyone from Fiore.
I never got to tell him how much he really meant to me. I never got to meet Igneel with Oni-chan one last time. I won't get to see Lucy join the guild. I'll never see anyone from Fairy Tail again...
My eyes watered. I bit my lip holding back tears.
"You won't cry! You're Manami of Fairy Tail!" I lectured myself. I tucked my face into my knees.
"What am I even saying..." I muttered to myself with a groan. I took a deep breath and looked up at the sky. It was like I could see the whole galaxy, stars littered the sky beautifully.
"Damn you! Fate you've always been so cruel! But I'm not going to fall for it! Nope, you'd better count on it! I'm going to have my own adventure and everything will turn out fine." I yelled at the sky. I grinned to myself.
"You're a loud brat," Grandma stated.
I laughed awkwardly.
"Oops, sorry I forgot you guys were out here," I admitted with a chuckle.
"That's why I like you. You got spunk, it's been a while since I've seen a strong young girl like yourself." She said with a grin while taking a puff from her pipe.
"Wow, this place is sure on a shortage of girls who can fight. It's getting tiring being the only one who can throw a good punch." I joked with a groan, Grandma chuckled.
"I like you Grandma- I mean Captain." I quickly corrected myself, she shot me a glare.
"Grandma, huh? You sure say whatever comes to mind kid. Be careful that Grandma might kill you?" JaeHa said as he jumped down next to me.
The Captain threw a tiny dagger at him which he dodged easily and I laughed.
"Close one, she almost got you JaeHa!"
He smiled at me with that grin of his and patted my head.
--
Grandma had briefed us the night before about Kumji's human trafficking and how we would destroy his ships. The only problem was we couldn't figure out which ship had the women and children. We were gathered on the boat ready for some new information.
"Captin I think the deal is going down in two days," JaeHa stated.
"What makes you say that?"
"I found a store that gathers girls to traffic. Publicly, they provide high-paying jobs for women. But in reality, its a place to traffic girls that can be sold at a high price. I had a guy ask how long they're taking applicants and he said that the owner said until noon, two days from now. Kumji is greedy. If there's good merchandise he'll wait as long as possible. That means he'll do the trade on that day. The ship should sail at night, after sundown." JaeHa explained, I clenched my fists.
To think there's such a despicable human on this planet. Disgusting...
"But we won't know what ship the girls are on," Grandma said looking at the floor thinking.
"From the inside..." Yona whispered I looked at her.
She's not thinking what I think she's thinking, is she?
"We can set off a firework or something from the inside of the ship with the girls, couldn't we save them quicker?" Yona asked. Grandma thought about it for a second.
"But, who would set the firework off?"
"I will!" Yona said with that same look of determination in her eyes.I heard Hak gasp from behind me.
"I will go undercover and set off a firework from the ship. Our goal puts saving the girls in front of defeating Kumji, right? We need to quickly figure out what ship they're on and evacuate them to a safe area. To do that, I'll sneak in and let you know which ship I'm on." Yona explained her plan.
I looked at her dumbfounded.
She can't be serious! She doesn't have any magic or fighting skills!
"Hold on. I can't really recommend you do that." Hak stepped in, Kija agreed to say it was too dangerous. Yoon stepped in too, explaining how risky that plan was.
"But ShinHa can see my signal from far away and we don't have time to search each ship one by one." Yona justified her plan.
"Captian Gigan! Let me fight too!" Yona exclaimed. I gaped at her.
"It's true, the girls can be saved if you succeed. But, its suicide to try going alone. You need at least one comrade if you want to go." Grandma said.
Immediately Kija and Hak offered to go, but Grandma cut them off saying they would never pass as a woman.
"I'll go," I said.
"Do either of you know how to handle gunpowder?" She asked, I looked and Yona who looked back at me.
"No, but I sure know how to kick someone's ass. Hak would know." I teased him with a grin. He glared back at me.
"I think you should go. You're witty and know how to use make a firework." Grandma turned to Yoon, he rejected at first but ended up giving in.
"Don't worry guys, I don't fight a losing battle." He said looking back at us. I gave him a thumbs up and grinned.
I approached Yoon later.
"Yoon-chan! I need help with something." He looked at me amused by the way I said chan.
"What is it?" He asked as he fiddled with the firework he was making.
"For the motion sickness medicine do you think you make a more concentrated version? That way I can hide a vile of it in my clothes so I can be at my best while on the ship." I beamed at him, he thought about it for a second.
"I suppose we don't want you dying of motion sickness when we need you fighting. I'll try my best."
I smiled brightly at him and thanked him before preparing myself for what tomorrow would bring.
--
I stood all dolled up in the waiting room of the place that was hiring girls. I pouted looking at the dress I was in. It restricted my movement and wasn't very comfortable. I wore pants and a sports bra underneath, something girls didn't have here in Kouka.
This dress is definitely coming off one way or another.
We talked to a weird old man before he guided us all over to a back room telling us to wait. After a few seconds, the floor opened up and we fell into a dark room that started to move in after a few hours. It was dark and I felt sick, but I knew I couldn't take the medicine Yoon had given me. I needed to save it for the boat.
They took us off the car and moved us to a room. There were at least 30 women sitting in the darkroom.
I gasped.
This was terrible. The guards pushed us harshly into the room
Yona winced in pain.
"Yona-chan are you okay?" I asked. She looked at her ankle which was red and swollen.
"It's sprained. You must have hurt it when we fell." Yoon observed. I frowned.
"We've got this guys!" I whispered trying to encourage Yona and Yoon. They both looked stressed but nodded there heads. When I finished the door opened revealing a man.
"I see, they are high-quality. Seems like Awa's still got something to offer." He said looking down at us, mostly Yona. I resisted the urge to spit at him.
What a piece of trash...
"Lord Kumji what about the jobs that were promised?" One of the girls asked.
"There are jobs. There are lots of fun jobs to be performed." He said with a sickening grin on his face he took a step towards Yona a yanked her from her hair.
My firsts were burning with anger ready to tear his head off.
"Red hair, huh? Indeed, this is rare. She's got a pretty face too. If we have this many good products it wouldn't hurt to take one for myself." He mused as he examined Yona. My eyes widened in fear. No...
"Lord Kumji! I believe you'd find me more satisfying than that girl!" Yoon said standing up quickly.
I tried my best not to yell in frustration, nothing was going as planned. Kumji thought about it stepping forward grabbing Yoon's face trying to decide.
"You're not bad, but don't interrupt me when I'm having fun!" He yelled as he kneed Yoon in the stomach. Yoon doubled over in pain and coughed blood. I gasped as I clenched my fists harder.
What am I supposed to do? I can't fight. But, I can't sit here either!
A guard advised Kumji not to beat up the girls and he simply hit that guy as well.
My eyes narrowed.
Kumji suddenly threw Yona at the ground as well. I clenched my fist.
"Piece of shit..." I muttered underneath my breath.
His eyes flitted over to me, He kicked me to the side. He was quite strong but not strong enough to hurt. I didn't budge from the sitting position I was in.
"Looking down on me, little girl?!" He yelled as he slapped me, I still didn't budge. I accidentally bit my tongue. I spat the blood out of my mouth onto his shoes.
"Sorry about that, Lord Kumji..." I said with venom lacing his name. My first were still clenched hard itching to fight. Itching to win.
He grabbed my hair and threw me towards the wall. My back hit the wall hard, but I still walked over and returned to where I was previously sitting. Jaw tight and hands clenched, I didn't look at him or say a thing. This angered him more.
I could feel Yoon's gaze on me and I could hear him mentally yelling, What are you doing!?
But I couldn't help myself.
It felt good to see him lose confidence in his strength. The guard that was hit stood up and convinced Kumji to leave and they slammed the door on us.
"Manami what were you thinking?" Yoon scolded me with a concerned glare. I loosened up flexing and stretching my fists that hurt from clenching them so hard.
"I don't know," I admitted with a shrug laughing lightly. The girls sweat-dropped at my behavior.
"I was itching to fight him! Ugh, I've never wanted to punch someone so much in my life! Gosh, it felt good to insult him...." I exclaimed with a grin.
"Save that for later, but I guess it's good you took the focus off of Yona." Yoon contemplated.
"Did you do that for me Manami?" Yona asked I grinned shaking my head no.
"Silly~ That was for me. That way it'll feel so much better when we're the ones beating him up." My competitive flare was showing. Yona sighed with relief as she began to explain to the rest of the girls why we were here.
--
As soon as we were left alone on the boat in a small room. I broke the rope around my wrist and took the blindfold off took the vile of medicine out of my dress and swallowed the bitter substance. I waited impatiently for the herbs to take effect and quell my motion sickness.
I untied Yona and Yoon's ropes as well.
"How did you break the rope?" Yoon whispered.
"Strong, remember?" I said with a grin, Yoon's eyes widened.
The boat started moving and we all looked at each other.
"Let's get it guys!" I cheered. Yoon started shaking the ladder and hid behind it as I waited with a rope to trip the guard.
"Hey, keep it down!" He yelled opening the hatch.
He seemed confused by the silence and went down the ladder. Yoon shot him with a tranquilizer and he landed in the ropes looped at I pulled the other end of the rope so it wrapped tightly around his feet making him stumble and fall.
He yelled at us but Yoon quickly hit the back of his head making him fall. I grinned at him.
"Nice!" I complimented him as Yona and I started tying the man up.
Yoon and Yona started talking to another girl, but I couldn't focus because I was still feeling motion sick.
"Manami, are you okay? We need to go." Yona asked. I gave her a thumbs up.
"Give me a second, the medicine hasn't started working yet," I explained doing my best to stand steady. Yona nodded and she and Yoon started heading towards the ladder.
"It's crawling with officers outside. I'll help you." One of the girls stopped us.
"Huh?" We all gasped confused.
"My father's a ship carpenter. I know a lot about a ship's structure, so I can show you shortcuts." She explained.
"Thank you!" Yona and I chirped.
"But why?" Yoon questioned her, I groaned to myself.
Ughh, can we just go! I wanna fight!
"It's what you said to us a while back. That when help comes, believe in them and take their hands. I also want to change this town. We all want to." She said looking at the other girls.
"My name's Yuri," She introduced herself.
"I'm Lina." Yona lied.
"I'm Yoon."
"And I'm Manami! Can we please start leaving now?" I complained impatiently. Yoon gave me a look a laughed awkwardly and scratched the back of my neck.
--
Yoon glanced over the corner and started waving at two guards. The ran over to us but Yona cut the rope holding a bunch of barrels causing them to tumble and hit the guards making them fall. Yoon went over to knock them out with his tranquilizer.
But there was a sudden movement of the ship, I cursed as I stumbled over feeling dizzy. This gave the guard an opening to hold a sword against Yuri's neck. I cursed, I couldn't fight with Yuri being held hostage.
"We're important merchandise. If you harm us, Lord Kumji will-"
"You guys are defective goods that escaped. We'll kill you people to set an example so that people of Awa will never rebel." He said holding the sword dangerously close to Yuri's throat.
"Those two were just threatened into helping me. Let them go, they have nothing to do with this." Yoon said taking out the scarf in his dress.
"We're actually a pirate that was sent to spy on this ship." I stood next to him nodding my head.
"A guy?!"
"Don't know 'bout you, but he still looks like a chick to me!" I said with a shrug, getting we weird looks from everyone.
The other guard swung a punch at Yoon but I jumped forward and caught it in my hand. I bend back his hand backward breaking his wrist.
He screamed in pain and tried to punch me with his other hand I grabbed his wrist and used his momentum to flip him over my shoulder, almost tripping because of my dress. I stepped on his face breaking his nose and kicked him one more time to knock him out.
I yawned.
"Boringgg~"
"Hey, stop or I'm going to kill this girl!" The other guy threatened. I cursed.
Forgot he was there!
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. We planted a bomb somewhere on the deck and it'll go off soon if you don't' stop!" Yoon bluffed.
"That doesn't make sense we didn't see any bombs."
"Idiot! That's cause he hid it!" I chirped in.
"Yes, only I know where it is," Yoon said with a grin.
"Damn it, come on we're going upstairs." He said still holding the knife against Yuri's neck. Even if I had a chance of getting him off Yuri it was too risky. Yuri would get injured int he process.
"Hey, you!" He pointed at me.
"Tie him up or I'll kill this girl right here right now!" He said pushing the blade of Yuri's throat.
"Sorry, Yoon." I apologized as I started tying him up.
"Once he lets go of her, I can take down every guard on this boat," I whispered making sure the guard couldn't hear me or see my lips move. Yoon nodded.
"Now walk in front of me up the stairs! One wrong move and this girl is dead!" I sighed helping Yoon up and started walking up the stairs. Once we got to the top a bunch of other guards tied me up and brought Yuri and Yona down back to the room in the ship. The kicked Yoon and me to the ground demanding to know where the bomb was. Yoon said some bullshit about where he put the bomb.
"God, you guys are bad at following instructions! We told you exactly where it was and you can't find it!" I said earning a kick to the stomach.
"Now would be a good time Manami," Yoon yelled.
"I'm waiting for an opening." I mouthed. Like Yona had read my mind she appeared and shot an arrow at the guards.
Yelling at them catching all their attention. I broke out of the rope and sent a kick in the jaw to one of the guards so hard causing him to fly off the boat. The guard drew his sword charging at me.
I grinned kicking the sword out of his hand as I brought my foot back down the ground I kicked his head into the ground. I dodged the third guard's sword and punched him off the boat. I ran at the last two guards slamming boh their heads together and they both knocked out.
I then proceeded to trip over my dress and fall on my butt.
"Itai~" I groaned.
Yona ran over to Yoon and started untying him.
"Good job Manami! That was amazing!" She complimented me, my face flushed embarrassed.
"It was nothing!" I said quickly standing up. I ripped my dress off and chucked it into the ocean.
I'm never fighting in a dress again.
"M-Manami! What are you doing!" Yoon stuttered out.
"I can't fight in that dress. What are you doing? Let's light that firework!" I exclaimed. Yoon grinned nodding his head. He used a lantern and shot the firework up in the air.
"Mission success!" I held up my hands for a high-five. They looked at me puzzled. I groaned, I grabbed Yona's hand and slapped it against mine.
"It's a high-five! Friends high-five when they're happy!" I explained, they both looked at each other.
"My God! You're kidding, right!?" I pouted. JaeHa jumped onto our boat.
"JaeHa, give me a high-five!" I commanded holding out my hand. He looked at me blankly.
"Why aren't you wearing clothes?" He asked looking away.
"First of all, these ARE cloths. Second of all, that's not important right now! What's important is none of y'all know what a HIGH-FIVE IS!! HOW?! WHY?! I MUST EDUCATE YOU!" I yelled. A bunch of guards rounded the corner of the ship. I pointed at them.
"Do you not know either?! High-five? You know what I'm talking about?" I yelled at the guards, they ignored me and charged. I groaned.
"Really? Nobody?" I complained dodging all their blades. I kicked blowing them all away with a frown. The group sweatdropped at me.
"This isn't really the time-"
"GOSH DARN IT! YES, IT IS!"
