Axel P.O.V.
The school bell rang and Axel stalked out, Ace at his heels. They leaped silently to the matchmaking office. A few people had been permitted to apply early, including Ace and Axel. Hydra and Caden were sitting at the waiting room, their hands laced together as they waited for their results. Ace gave Hydra a nod. Obviously he felt a bit bad about that time he bad talked her. Walking up to the counter, Axel registered and grabbed the packets, handing one to Ace. They sat down. "Nervous?" Asked Ace. "You wish." Said Axel, laughing. Axel grabbed a pen and started filling in the questions.

Axel chewed at the end of his eraser, which Ace made a disgusted face at. He didn't really like anyone, but that wouldn't exactly help out the matchmakers. Closing his eyes, Axel tried to envision who he would be the best match with. AKA, who was powerful, because that's all that the matchmakers really cared about. He decided to put Emmie, because she had just manifested as an inflictor, and she was also a Vacker-Song, which was pretty high in status.

Axel took a deep breath, quickly checking over his answers. This would turn out good. He would not end up as a bad match. It would all be fine. Axel turned to Ace, who was still jotting down answers.

Axel nodded. "You wrote nobody for romantically inclined?" Ace smirked. "Who did you write? Emmie, really?" Axel rolled his eyes. "I don't like her, she has high status and ability." It was Ace's turn to roll his eyes. "And you say I'm shallow." Axel gawked. "I was just doing what was best for the family-" Ace hardened. "There is no family anymore." Axel gulped. He picked up his packet and handed it to the lady at the desk named Traci. "Your results will be processed. Fastest is a day, the longest is about a year. It will probably be around the middle." Axel nodded and flashed a smile. He heard that some girl Elyria got hers in a day, but Nerra's hadn't come yet and it had been a year. Walking out of the building, Axel shoved his hands in his pockets, the cold air numbing his face. "Axel? Are you getting your matchmaking lists?" Chirped a voice. Star was twirling a lock of her hair and grinning. Ocean was rolling her eyes behind her, next to Avery and a nervous Cara.
"Um yeah." Said Axel. "Cool! Imagine if I was on your list." Star said with a sly smile. Ace widened his eyes, holding back a chuckle. "I'll leave you two to it." He said. Axel grabbed his arm. "Do. Not. Leave." He mumbled. Ace leaped away and Cara looked down, her face flushed not only from the cold. "So, do you maybe wanna hang?" Asked Star. "I'm pretty busy. I don't have all that much time for....people like you." Star's smile faltered. "Sorry, your family just isn't... well, professional. The only reason people like your dad is because he's friends with Cara's mom. You know he went to Exile." Ocean growled. "You shut up about my parents. In case you didn't notice your mom left you to be evil. Obviously she didn't love you all that much." The words rang in Axel's ears painfully.
"Don't listen to that jerk Star." Said Ocean. "No, he didn't mean it." Said Star weakly. Axel leaped away covering his eyes. They were so lucky. He had been so rude because he was jealous. Their parents loved each other and their children. The same couldn't be said for his. Axel sat down outside his house and looked up at the sky. It was just darkening and birds were flying through the clouds. He wished he could fly like them, be free.
Hydra P.O.V.
Hydra definitely had to pick out a dress. And makeup. This was her first winnowing gala, even if she was a plus one and had no interest in Aiden. But she didn't want to ask Emmie, she had too much on her plate. Molly didn't have a clue about makeup and Will definitely would NOT help her. She was on her own. Skimming through her closet, a thought came to Hydra. She quickly checked her imparter and sent a message to Ocean. Ocean appeared at the door seven minutes later, a calculated glance aimed at her closet. "We have a few days before the winnowing gala, and you haven't shopped? At all?" Ocean said. Hydra shrugged guiltily. "Are you going to the party?" Asked Hydra. "I got this girl Lobelia to invite me as her plus one." Replied Ocean.
An hour later, Hydra was with Ocean in a dress store. Ocean was carefully examining each dress. "I, obviously, already bought my dress, not here, but this place is pretty good. What theme are you looking for?" Hydra shrugged. "I normally wear blue." Hydra said. Ocean wrote "not blue" on a notepad. "Maybe red and black? Black would go good with your hair." Ocean quickly scanned the dress rack and gasped. She picked up a dress that was made of black lace and pooled at the bottom, with sleeves that cut off at the top and hung on the shoulders. "This. Is. Perfect." Said Ocean. Hydra fingered the fabric.
"It's perfect." Hydra said, with a breath of joy. After purchasing the dress, Ocean and Hydra went to slurps and burps to pick up some elixirs for hair shininess, long lashes, and glossy eyes. They weren't the only ones with this idea however. Elyria and Laia were shopping through the shelves, eye's alight with excitement. "And then he takes my hand and asks to dance. All of the girls stare and I do a little twirl or something." Said Elyria. "Are you guys talking about Aidens gala?" Asked Ocean, leveling a glare at Laia. She had taken a distinct distaste to Laia for some reason. Elyria turned red and nodded. "I mean- I just think it will be fun?" She said. Ocean nodded. "It will be, obviously." She put her arm through Hydra's and stomped off. "What was that about?" Asked Hydra. "Sorry just- uhg! That Laia girl thinks she's friends with everyone!" Hydra started to smile. Of course Ocean was jealous. Over the summer, Hydra and Ocean had gotten a lot closer and put boy drama behind them. Ocean invited Hydra over to her house, and they walked in. "Avery and Star are home, I don't know what they're doing." Warned Ocean. Hydra entered their warm and cozy home. Star was putting makeup on Avery as she squirmed around, laughing. Hydra entered the living room and saw Biana, Tam, Sophie, Keefe, Linh, Dex, and Fitz. Keefe was holding Sophie's hand, and they all looked worried.
Ocean's eyes widened, and she shushed Hydra, backing up and listening. Hydra could barely hear what they were saying because of their hushed tone. All she could pick up was "Original gene", "Councilor Teriks prophecy", "The chosen one". Ocean gaped. "When we spread the gene to give extra abilities, the main gene, the one that started it, was given to someone. Maybe they can heal Chiara?" Said Linh. "The Neverseen is using humans to attack, and they somehow got an injection of Ignis's blood. It was only enough to inject one person, and we caught it before it spread to anyone, but still. Because of this, Chiara lost her ability of being a charger." Sophie said.
Biana pressed her knuckles to her mouth. "Are you sure it didn't spread? And where is she?" She asked. "She started losing her ability a few days before school, and she's currently being quarantined in a safe room at Foxfire. Elwin is checking on her through a safety window, and has not yet risked exposure. Her mother, Councilor Zarina's ability is still intact, but she is currently quarantined at a safe house." Tam nodded, pausing. "Why is she being kept at foxfire? And what does this have to relate to the recent situation of the Neverseen infiltrating humans and using them?" "Because we want to see if we can try to somehow expose her to some students who might be the chosen one without infecting them." Replied Keefe. "What are the prophecies' main points? Do we have any clue who it is?" Asked Linh.
"The main points state that they are associated with fire, through abilities, DNA, or personality traits, such as having a fiery personality. They are a student at Foxfire, their powers changed, either manifested or grew stronger, and they have the ability to hurt someone. I'm not sure about the last one, but I think it might be referring to an inflictor?" Said Sophie. Tam ran a hand through his bangs. "That's all we know? It could be pretty much anyone." Sophie nodded. Ocean grabbed Hydra's arm and scurried away. "Oh my god! What if I'm the chosen one! Or you!" She started squealing. Hydra wrapped her arms around her chest, thinking to herself. She headed home after and hung the dress on her closet pondering who the chosen one could possibly be. Until her mind landed on Emmie.
Yuna P.O.V.
"Hey mom." Yuna said. Oralie smiled, passing Yuna plastic wrappings. "What's in this?" Yuna asked. "I heard Emmie was allowed to invite another plus one." Oralie winked. Yuna raised her eyebrows, unzipping the parcel. Her lips parted in surprise. A silky white dress stared back at her. "Well, what's for me!?" Daffy squealed impatiently. Oralie's smile widened, "Don't worry Laughy Daffy, I have something perfect for you."
— time skip
Yuna smoothed her skirts with sweaty hands. "Emmie, hi!" She said nervously. Emmie smiled impatiently, her eyes curiously wandering towards Neil's direction. A gaggle of people walked towards Yuna. She smiled, suddenly overwhelmed. "I think I'll fetch a drink." She said hastily. Yuna poured a small glass of fizzy berry wine. "Ignis!" She sputtered, noticing his nearing presence. He smiled, but it faded away quickly. "You look... nice," Ignis said politely. Yuna shot him a thankful grin. "Dipity!" Ignis said, brightening up. Dipity stepped forwards, her eyes twinkling with the absence of her glasses. Her dress was silver and had a flattering high-low skirt that suited her well. "Would you- might you- do you want to dance?" Ignis asked. Yuna felt her cheeks warm as she stepped forwards. "Of course!" Dipity said excitedly, taking his hand. Yuna stepped backwards hurriedly, shame creeping into her gut. A boy about her age walked towards her. "Yuna, you look lovely tonight. Would you like to dance?"
"I'd love to." Yuna said, forcing her smile to look pleasant. After around ten minutes of dancing, most returned to the snack table for a break. "Care to follow me?" The boy asked her. Not thinking much of it, Yuna replied by placing her arm on his. He led her to a hallway, only a minute's walk from the previous ballroom. "Now, what is it?" Yuna asked. The boy smiled and Yuna blushed a bit. "I was just wondering if I might tell you something,"
An uneasy feeling settled in her stomach. "Look out!" Someone screamed, shoving her aside. Yuna screamed as the spot she was standing in started to emit smoke. He'd tried to electrocute her. She turned frantically to see Ignis staring back at her. "What the bloody h-"
Yuna pulled Ignis down as a spark shot above their heads. She quickly turned around and sent out some sparks of her own. The boy growled. "I know him." Ignis bit out. "That's Trystan. Trystan Lark."
"He looks different," Yuna grunted, ducking away from the electricity.
"I don't remember him having abilities to manipulate electricity. Or whatever you do."
"It's called 'sparknetic' thank you very much, and you're right, I believe he's a froster."
"Must be some sort of weapon." Ignis concluded. Yuna took a deep breath. "Cover me"
"W-what?!" He spluttered. Yuna shot out from their hiding spot, dodging and dashing towards Trystan. Ignis ran around her, trying to distract Trystan. Yuna clenched her hand into a fist. "THUMB UNDER YOUR FIST OR YOU'LL BREAK YOUR BLOODY FINGER!" Ignis yelled. Yuna pulled her thumb out from under her fingers and smashed her hand into Trystan's jaw. He fell to the ground, unconscious. Yuna waved her hand around to ease the pain. "What is happening!?"
Ignis grabbed her hand and pulled her into a nearby closet. "W-"
"Quiet." He hissed. "What?" She said, her voice mockingly quieter. "I heard voices. His accomplices are here, and if they find us, I don't even know what they'll do."
Yuna whirled towards him. "What do they even want from me? They seem so interested in you, but what of me?!"
"Shhhh!" He exclaimed. Yuna bit her lip in anger. They stared in silence as feet shuffled by. Yuna released a sigh. She stiffened realizing how close they were. She peered up through her lashes to find him staring directly at her. His gaze flickered from her eyes to her mouth as she felt heat climb to her cheeks. Ignis took a step forward. His breath warmed her face. Yuna tilted her face upwards, staring directly at his deep blue eyes. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Ignis P.O.V.
He was going to kiss her. Or was he? Should he? No he shouldn't. He couldn't do that to Dipity, it wasn't fair. Ignis drew back abruptly. Yuna stumbled away, her face turning cherry red. "I- sorry." She mumbled. He winced, offering her an apologetic look. Yuna opened the door, dashing towards the ballroom. Trystan's body was gone. Dipity greeted him with a large smile. "What were you two doing?" She asked. When no one responded, her smile faltered. "We were discussing a family event." Yuna said, her voice hitching like she was trying not to cry. Guilt stabbed at Ignis, he had been horrible to Yuna and Dipity. At that point, he deserved all the guilt in the world.
Laia P.O.V.
The chatter on Friday at school was LOUD. The winnowing gala was today and everyone was excited, even if they weren't invited. But that wasn't the only thing on everyone's minds. Apparently Ocean had overheard some talk from the main crew about a chosen one and everyone was devouring it. Ever since Ignis had been found to have the gene that eradicated abilities, he had multiple bodyguards on him, and a lot of attention. Now people thought that that could be them "I bet I'm the chosen one! My aunt is a pyrokinetic, my empath abilities seem to be growing stronger, and I totally have the ability to hurt someone, my skills with a throwing star are unmatched!" Said a random girl named Ezmerald.
Her friends crowded around her squealing. "Wow! Can I have an autograph Chosen One? One of them, Glissa, chirped. One of her other friends, her name was Susan or something, was biting her lip nervously. Laia rolled her eyes, knowing what would happen next. "What's wrong?" Asked Glissa. Susan crossed her arms. "You guys know that I just manifested as an Inflictor. And your aunt is associated with fire, which connects me to her. I kind of fit into the prophecy as well. I-I think I'm the chosen one." All the girls gasped and started arguing. "This is more pathetic than I could have imagined." Said Ocean, an amused look on her face. "Not as pathetic as your alchemy submission yesterday. I can't believe we're partners." Retorted Axel, rolling his eyes. "I'll try to stick a bit more to your level newbie." Ocean said, examining her nails.
"Isn't he so cute!" Squealed Star. Ocean mimed gagging. "Looks aren't everything ladies." She said. "So you think he's cute?" Asked Laia. Star looked at Ocean, a red flush of anger on her cheeks. "I never said that!" Said Ocean, glaring. Laia put her hands up. "Sorry." She said. "I didn't know you were so touchy." She muttered. Ocean stomped forwards and Avery had to hold her back. Her supposed girl gang had a little beef. Star, Astrid and Avery were nice to her, Cara was pretty nice, and she hadn't talked to Paisley that much. Of course, Elyria was her best friend. Darian walked past them and gave a slight nod to Cara. She glanced at him and smiled. "Oh my god, I've never seen Darian do that before! He must really like you! How did you do it? It took me a long time to become his "acquaintance"." Squealed Laia. Cara shrugged. "I don't know, we were just working on the project together and I stood up to him. We're kinda friends now." She said.
"Do you still like Ace?" Laia asked. Cara bit her lip. "Yeah, I just don't think he likes me at all. We don't really talk and I don't really know." Laia nodded comfortingly. Will passed and winked at her grinning. "Hey, partners for the project right? I'm so excited." Laia said, a blush creeping over her cheeks. He grinned back at her. "Me too." Star gasped. "Wow! That was so cute!" She turned to Astrid but Astrid was staring at something. Laia turned to see what it was. Josh Charming was hanging out by his girlfriend, Livvy's locker, chatting. "He's soooo charming." Astrid said. "Oooooh!" Everyone squealed. Brennon was standing next to them, looking really nervous. His girlfriend, Chiara, had lost her ability, and it was all because of Ignis. Yeah, Brennon didn't really seem to like Ignis. Laia finally headed over to Alchemy and sat by Will. Her hand brushed his and he smiled at her, making her melt. Ocean, as usual, was bickering with Axel.
"Ok ok, sorry I was rude about your mom." Ocean said, rolling her eyes. "Did you just say "your mom"?" Asked Axel, snickering. Oceans' lips quirked up into a smile for a half second before she returned to glaring. "Help please!" Squealed Star as a bubbling turquoise liquid splashed on her short sleeve yellow shift tunic top. Ocean and Axel got up with exasperation, helping Star. "You forgot to add in the lizard's eyes." Said Ocean and Axel at the same time. "Look at you two, working together at last!" Chirped Star, grinning widely at Axel. They glanced at each other, nodding with approval. Laia turned back to her own concoction, slowly stirring. Will placed his hands over hers, guiding them in a stirring motion. Ivy watched from a table with Ari, who was watching Star. Her annoyance was almost as obvious as the tension between Noctem and Ari, who were very much enemies. "Axel! Can we talk later?" Asked Noctem with a slight pout. "I'm kind of busy. My family was invited to the winnowing gala." Noctem grinned. "I'm also going. Anyways, you don't have enough time for the chosen one?" Everyone turned to her. "What? I have a fiery personality, I'm an inflictor and I just manifested. It's obviously me." There were murmurs of agreement and disagreement. "I think it's Emmie." Peeped Hydra who then sank back into her chair when Noctem shot her a glare. "It might be Will?" Laia added but nobody listened to her. "Thanks." Said Will, smiling at her. Suddenly a loud coughing noise came. Star was coughing and hacking, blue liquid coming out of her mouth. "She swallowed the potion!" Yelled Avery, panicking. Ocean and Axel jumped up. Ocean stuffed a slimy green thing in her mouth and Axel poured a purple liquid in. Star swallowed and gasped before closing her eyes. Emmie scooped up Star and ran to the hospital wing. Axel offered a high five to Ocean, who gave him a look before tapping his hand with her pinky.
Class soon ended and Laia left. "Hey." Said Will, tearing a hand through his hair. Laia smiled and started to walk away. "Oh crap, I left my papers." She turned and ran back into the empty classroom. Will followed behind, hesitant. Laia tucked the papers into her back and looked up at him. The world blurred as he leaned in and kissed her. Laia pulled away after a few seconds and smiled. A gasp came from the door, and they turned around. Ivy was shaking, her books spilled on the floor. She spun and ran away, Will chasing after her. Laia stood in shock. Ivy would definitely hate her after this. She tried to tuck the guilt aside, but it was too hard. The one thing that made it better was that WILL JUST KISSED HER!!!!
—
Laia grinned as she danced with her friends. Ivy was glaring at her from the corner of the room, which definitely made her uncomfortable, but even that couldn't ruin her mood. She glanced up at Darian, who was skulking in the corner of the room. He glanced at his hand and quickly dashed into the hallway. "Um guys, I'll be right back." Said Laia. Elyria nodded and scuttled over to Aiden. She was seven turns away from a dance with him. Laia walked into the hallway. A swath of flames was flickering in Darians hand. "Y-your a pyrokinetic?" Laia stuttered. The flames leaped up as Darian swiveled around. "Laia? You can't tell anyone, swear to me!" Said Darian, grabbing her shoulders. "Yes, yes I promise!" Said Laia. "D-darian?" Mumbled Cara. Laia and Darian swiveled around. "Hey Cara." Said Darian. Cara looked from Laia to Darian. "Do you want to dance?" Cara Asked. "Sure." Said Darian. He was not one for words. Cara mumbled something to Darian, to which he glanced at Laia and said something.
Cara ran back to Laia. "Did Darian cheat on me with you because he said he didn't but now I'm starting to stress and-" "No he didn't, I swear." Said Laia. "We were just talking." Cara gave a skeptical glance before biting her lip and running back to Darian. Laia took a deep breath. What was Darian not telling her?
Emmie P.O.V.
Before I left the Healing Center, I glanced at both boys lying in the soft cots. I stepped over to Neil, whose eyes were closed peacefully, seeming like a different person than the Neil who fought with my brother a few hours ago. I smiled suddenly, remembering the times when I was with Neil, some of my happiest moments.
Snapping out of my half daze, I noticed a nexus-like bracelet on Neil's left wrist. I scrunch my eyebrows together, confused. Did Neil still wear a nexus? Neil's in level 4, he should've passed that stage already... I shook my head in confusion and left.
—
Huh. Axel? Romantically inclined towards me? Nah. I heard from Hydra, who heard from Avery, who heard from Ocean, who overheard Ace saying that Axel had written my name for that question. Why would he write my name? I didn't really think he would actually like me... Did I feel that way towards him? Of course not! I didn't need any more complications. I wished I could get my matchmaking scroll early too. Maybe seeing who was on my list would resolve things quicker...
I RSVP'd to confirm my attendance to Aiden's Winnowing Gala, excited yet still slightly upset. I wished I could get my list early and hoped with all my heart that I would.
"Em!" Hydra whisper shouted to me during Alchemy. "Ocean and I overheard the adults' conversation, and you could potentially be 'the chosen one'! They said the chosen one is an inflictor whose abilities have been getting stronger or has recently manifested, and also has a fiery personality, or are associated with fire! You're literally a pyrokinetic, definitely have a fiery personality, and you manifested as an inflictor a few days ago! I can't think of anyone who fits that description best but you!"
I stared blankly at Hydra and blinked. "Me? Some kind of 'chosen one?' You sure?" I asked, laughing. "I don't think my drama goes that far.'"
Later in Alchemy, there was a whole fit of Star accidentally swallowing a potion, and I immediately rushed her to Elwin. I made sure she was fine and headed back to Alchemy to get my things for my next class, but stopped still when I saw Ivy running away from the classroom in tears. Merely seconds later, Will ran after her like his feet were on fire, yelling Ivy's name. I'd never seen him so panicked and flustered.
That's weird...
I poked my head into the classroom and saw Laia standing with a wide smile and a dazed look, clutching her papers.
"He kissed me..." Laia whispered to herself.
My hand flew to my mouth. What?!
I hastily rushed in and gathered my things, not looking at Laia even once before rushing back out.
I talked later with Hydra and Molly, who both agreed that Will and Laia were in the wrong. I felt so bad for Ivy, who was probably heartbroken. I'd experienced that feeling myself one too many times.
Later at lunch, I went up to Ivy, who was sitting alone.
"Hey, Ivy."
She took one look at me and looked away, grumbling, "What do you want?"
I sat down opposite of her and sighed. "I know you're probably frustrated about the whole Will and Laia thing, but I just wanted you to know that some of the girls and I think it's not right for Will to have kissed Laia while dating you. That's cheating, and we're against it.
She looked up and gave me a half smile. "Thanks for letting me know."
—
Two hours before the Gala, I was panicking.
I don't have enough time! Who gets ready in only two hours for a Winnowing gala? How could you procrastinate something like this, Emmie?!
I frantically shoved through the racks of my closet and pulled out a sparkly, dark cherry red satin and lace no-shoulder dress that I had been saving for a special occasion.
Now seemed like a good time to wear it.
Thankfully, Everett came over to help me get ready. I applied a hint of light red eyeshadow and mascara, along with basic pin up eyeliner. My lips were brushed with light cherry red lip tint. Everett slightly curled my long, dark hair, giving it natural looking soft waves and pinned it to one side with a silver pin that complimented my silver necklace, bracelet, and two inch earrings, finishing off my outfit with an elegant touch. I was going to go shop for some elixirs with Hydra and Ocean, but deciding that I looked just fine, I slipped on my silver four inch heels and started for the Leapmaster.
—
I entered Aiden's estate, a bit late. Noticing Ocean nearby, I walked up to her.
"Hey, Ocean!"
"Hi, Emmie! Omg, I love your dress! Oh, I forgot to ask- what happened with Jacob?"
I sighed, frustrated. "Well, I was going to break up with him, but I haven't just yet. I know he likes Everett, or maybe Mina- it's too obvious."
Ocean blinked. "If he likes someone else, you should dump that jerk right now! He's not worth you stressing over him like this!" She pointed behind me. "The bathroom's over there- no one should hear you yelling at him from there." Ocean winked and turned away. Gathering confidence, I marched over to the bathroom and pulled out my imparter.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Jacob." I cleared my throat. "Look, I know it's what we both want, so we should just break up. I know you like Everett, and I've even heard a rumor about you and Mina. So let's end things here before we hurt each other even more."
I held my breath until he responded, "I should've known you'd know. I'm sorry, Emmie. I didn't mean to hurt you. And even though I don't want to admit it... we should. I really do think this will be for the best."
I sighed. Not of frustration this time, but of content. "But hey, we're still always going to be friends, don't forget."
Jacob grinned. "Of course."
I hung up and walked out of the bathroom, feeling a weight lifted off my chest. Suddenly, someone tapped on my shoulder and I whirled around.
"Oh, hi Brennon."
"Hey, Emmie. Will you dance with me?" he asked. "I need to tell you something."
He took my hand and we stepped onto the dance floor. "You know how much of a hard time Neil's having, right?"
I looked away. "Well, no, not really. I haven't heard from him in forever."
"Well, I just needed to tell you that he's been acting really odd all of a sudden. And by odd, I mean really, really odd. He screams and smashes stuff when he gets mad and is constantly yelling at Mina."
I gasped. "Seriously? Why did no one bother to tell me?" I thought for a second. "Speaking of Neil being odd, did you happen to notice the nexus-like bracelet on him? I saw it on his wrist when he was knocked out in the Healing Cent-"
"Sorry to interrupt, but can I have this dance?"
I looked to my left and saw Axel holding out his hand, asking me to take it. I looked back at Brennon, who nodded. I put my hand into Axel's as he pulled me to the center of the dance floor.
"So," I said, trying to break the silence. "I heard you put me as the person you were romantically inclined to on your matchmaking scroll?"
Axel nodded. "I did."
Wow, this dude is really dry.
"I, uh, didn't know you felt that way towards me." I looked around awkwardly. "Also, um... didn't you come with Noctem?"
Axel rolled his eyes. "Yeah. Ace convinced me to ditch Ocean and ask Noctem instead."
"So... you like Ocean? If you do, why'd you write my name on your scroll?"
"I mean, you have a high class status, and you're pretty powerful."
I stopped moving. "That's all you care about? Status and power?" I scoffed. "To think someone like that wrote my name on their matchmaking scroll..." I squirmed out of Axel's grip and stormed off.
Ugh, what a jerk!
"Hold on, that's not what I meant!"
I continued walking and stopped at a bench in a hallway.
Axel appeared a few moments afterwards.
"Listen, that's not what I meant. All I was trying to do was think about what's best for my family." he looked away. "Until someone reminded me that I have no family anymore. My mom abandoned me and my siblings," he continued, "my dad's never there for anything, Ace and I are always quarreling, and I don't even know about Annabelle anymore." he buried his head in his hands.
I looked at him sympathetically. "Look... I'm sorry for misjudging you, and I can't do anything about your family issues, but... if you ever need a shoulder to cry on or someone to support you, I'll be there."
Axel smiled at me gratefully. "Thanks."
Maybe Axel wasn't such a bad person after all.
—
Later, after I'd danced to my heart's content and couldn't anymore, I took a break and sat down in one of the plush sofas placed along the walls. I sat with my left hand supporting my chin, the other playing with a small blue flame.
"Emmie Vacker-Song. Long time no see." I recognized the voice, but he didn't sound particularly friendly.
I looked up at him. "Neil?"
He scoffed. "I'm surprised you remember my name. Does it feel nice to go around playing with other guys' feelings after ditching me?"
"What?"
"You heard me." Neil rolled his eyes. "What a player. I should've known."
"Neil, the only person I dated after you was Jacob, that's it- and we broke up today."
"Do you think I care?!" he roared. People were starting to look our way. "You missed our date because you were with him, didn't you. Jacob. That little son of a-"
"Neil!" I exclaimed, exasperated. "Why do you keep bringing this up? I told you, I was taken to Elwin because I was sick, nothing else." Suddenly, I was angered. "Why do you keep blaming me for something that wasn't in my control?! I didn't choose to get sick, it was because of my ability!"
"There we go, making excuses. Why don't you ever take responsibility?"
I let out a laugh of disbelief. What was he talking about? How did being sick and missing a date lead to irresponsibility? "Are you kidding me? I was sick, you idiot. Sick! I almost died that day!"
The music had stopped and people were now staring at us and whispering amongst themselves. There was a ring of red flames supporting me- my anger had led to another outburst of flames, which I hadn't even noticed.
Neil suddenly raised his hand. My eyes shut on instinct, squeezing a tear out.
"Hey, back off!"
When I opened my eyes again, Neil was frozen, his arm extended towards me. Another boy stood in front of me. I gasped, "Axel?" I realized that he was a mesmer. The flames surrounding me snuffed out in an instant.
"Don't you dare touch her." Axel glared at Neil. "Let's go, Emmie." he pulled me away by the wrist. I was still shocked at everything that had happened.
Axel pulled me into a secluded hallway. "Are you okay?" he asked, wiping away the tear on my cheek.
I was speechless. If he'd been a second late, Neil would've hurt me.
"I... I think so."
Axel tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "Good."
As I looked into his eyes, I felt something weird. I wasn't exactly feeling the butterflies... but it was close to it.
Suddenly, Axel leaned down and kissed me. As he did, I saw Neil out of the corner of my eye, and my insides churned. I wanted revenge on him. I wanted him to feel the way he made me feel.
I wanted him to hurt.
So I kissed Axel back, making sure Neil could see. But little did I know, he wasn't the only one watching.
After Axel had pulled me away from the crowd, Ocean had chased after me. And Noctem, who was passing by, witnessed the kiss as well.
"Em... Emmie?" Ocean let out a shaky breath in betrayal while Noctem just stood staring at us, her hatred for me much greater now- if that was even possible.
I whirled around from Axel, horrified. Ocean ran off. "Ocean! H-hold on, it's n-not what you t-think!" I chased after her, leaving Axel alone and confused.
Neil P.O.V.
[3rd person]
Neil stared after the girl he'd just made cry as she was taken away by- in his opinion- a snobbish, good-for-nothing jerk.
He scoffed and pushed his way through the crowd after them, ignoring the torturous pain in his chest- no, in his heart. The past few weeks had been unbearably painful. Every time he felt at least a hint of emotion, a stabbing pain nailed him directly in his heart.
Neil's vision blurred as he stumbled forward in pain.
But what he came to see hurt him even more. Neil watched helplessly as the girl he loved kissed a boy that wasn't him. In agony, Neil stumbled towards the bathroom and placed his trembling hands on the sink, closing his eyes tightly as he panted, sweat rolling down this side of his temple. His whole body shook from the pain as tears slipped down his cheek. It was a pain he'd never experienced before. A bright glow suddenly forced Neil to open his eyes. Something on his wrist was pulsing with a blinding force of energy. With a cry of pain, he instinctively grabbed the thin leather strap on his wrist, his hands experiencing a searing pain as he tore it off.
[1st person]
My vision came back slowly, along with my memories. I looked at the leather bracelet in my fist and saw that my hand was covered in burns- but that wasn't what hurt the most. What hurt the most was the fact that I'd made Emmie cry.
I couldn't deny the fact that I never stopped loving her, even when I'd broken up with her. I slapped my forehead.
Neil, you idiot!
I need to apologize to Emmie asap.
But as soon as I stood up, one last memory found its way back to my brain.
[FLASHBACK]
"Don't worry, boy. The pain will be all gone soon." The creepy, black-cloacked Neverseen watched as I struggled against the bonds on my hands and feet. They applied a thin, nexus-like strap to my wrist. I screamed as a burning sensation traveled through my entire body.
I was a whole new person. I was angry and pissed at every living thing, and yelled at everyone who dared come in my way. I saw the bracelet on my wrist but didn't feel like it was anything out of the ordinary. I couldn't remember much, and every time I tried to think back, a burning pain in my head stopped me.
[END OF FLASHBACK]
I'd been taken hostage by the Neverseen?
I shook my head to clear it.
I pocketed the leather bracelet and left the bathroom in search of Emmie.
Ocean P.O.V.
Ocean sat on the chair next to the hospital bed, biting her nails. Star was conscious and healthy, but Elwin wouldn't let her go just yet. Elwin flashed a yellow light over Star's eye. "Hmm. That's interesting." Said Axel. Elwin moved and flashed a purple light in her other eye. "Oooh, that might not be good." Said Ocean. Star whipped her head around. "Not helping guys." Star dead panned. "All clear." Said Elwin. Ocean fist bumped Axel. "You're welcome for distracting you when you got your shot." Said Ocean. Elwin had warned Star she would have to get a shot, which Star had been stressing about for the past twenty minutes. "Ohhh, thanks guys." Said Star, releasing a breath. Ocean left the hospital wing, Star dashing ahead to get back to her friends.
Ocean and Axel walked next to each other in silence. Ocean looked up at him and her stomach swooped. He looked different. There was something different about him. "Thanks for helping with Star." Said Ocean awkwardly. Axel just nodded, swinging his arms as his side. He turned to Ocean and her heart started beating extra fast. "I should probably go, Ace is probably annoying the heck out of Drendan." Said Axel. Ocean scoffed. "Isn't he always?" Axel looked down. "You know, he doesn't always go straight home." Ocean paused. "What do you mean?" She asked. "We fight and he hates me. I don't blame him. So he doesn't always go straight home. Instead he walks to clear his mind. So I'm always alone with my dad. And all he does is throw photos of my mom against the wall and cry." Said Axel. Ocean looked down. Everyone always thought Axel was a high class brat, but he had been through more than people had known. "And she always called me stupid. Told me I was the worse twin, always disappointing her. But she said that to Ace too. And we both believed her."
Axel quickly leaned down and kissed her. Ocean froze then leaned into him. Finally she pulled away. Ocean started to run away. "I'm sorry it's just that Star likes you and-" Ocean groaned as she ran away. Of course she had kissed one of her triplets biggest crushes. What would she do now?
Ocean saw Star in the hall with Paisley, Avery, Astrid, Laia, Cara, and Elyria. "And then he helped me forget about the shot! It was so sweet, I think he's starting to really like me!" Squealed Star. "Good for you Star!" Said Cara, her gaze on Darian. "Hi guys...." Said Ocean, her gaze down. "Hi! What's wrong?" Asked Astrid.
"I have to speak to Star. Privately." Said Ocean. Star came forwards and walked next to Ocean. "So..about Axel." Started Ocean. "He told you he likes me?! Eeeh! You're the best ever!!!" Star hugged Ocean. "No he um.. we kissed?" Star froze.
"What?" She said, her lower lip wobbling. "I'm sorry Star, it happened so fast, I didn't realize-" Ocean began. "HOW could you do this to me?!" Screamed Star. She turned and told everyone what happened. Laia gasped and glared at Ocean, bringing Elyria to her side. "Why would you be such a jerk to your triplet?" Asked Laia.
"You made Will cheat on Ivy! Wills my cousin, you know!" Said Ocean. "Wills is also my cousin and I'm happy for them. You should be too." Said Avery. "Yeah, Will and Laia want to be together. I bet Axel doesn't want to be with you. Also, Ivy and Will already dated. I never got that with Axel." Said Star. Ocean gawked. Astrid and Paisley moved to Star's side.
"I'm not saying I condone cheating, but Will and Laia were meant to be together. Will must have just forgotten he even had a girlfriend. He and Laia are endgame." Said Astrid. Ocean rolled her eyes. "First off, this isn't the same as Will and Laia. They actually cheated on Ivy, but I didn't do that. You aren't even with Axel!" Ocean said. "What's not the same is that Will and Laia are meant to be. It's not their fault. But Star and Axel are meant to be and by getting in their way, you're the villain of their fairytale." Squeaked Elyria, giving Ocean a babyish glare.
Ocean gave Cara a pleading glance. All of her friends had ganged up on her, and she knew that Cara was being peer pressured. "Sorry Ocean." Said Cara, moving to Stars' side. "Now get out." Said Star. Ocean walked off moving away, trying to ignore every one who was whispering about her, glaring at her, saying mean stuff about her. Ocean glanced up and saw Axel talking with Ace. Star was watching him, looking sad but also hopeful. Axel saw Ace and Ace said something to him.
Axel started towards her then turned and started talking to Noctem. "Hey, wanna go to the winnowing gala together?" He asked. Noctem nodded and hugged him, squealing with happiness. Astrid and Paisley comforted Star, who looked down, sad. Then Star looked up and gave a mean smile at Ocean. "At least I'm not rejected alone." She said bitterly.
Ocean rolled her eyes and walked away. She bumped into Ivy, who was crying. She glared at Ocean, probably because she was cousins with Will. Ocean sighed and patted her on the shoulder, walking away. Hydra was talking with Molly and Emmie. "Of course I'm mad at Laia for doing that when he was with Ivy, but I'm way more mad at Will! How could he!" Said Hydra. Emmie nodded. "If I ever see Laia again, I'll give her my best death glare." Muttered Emmie. "I'm sure you will." Said Molly, laughing. Ocean bumped past them and through the hallway. She ran into the bathroom and sat down. Of course. Of course he was mad at her, I mean she had basically rejected him when he spilled his life story. Of course he asked Noctem. She was powerful, one of the people believed to be the chosen one, and Emmie, basically the most believed to be the chosen one, was dating Jacob. Of course, when Ocean finally felt like maybe her friends actually liked her, and didn't think she was "too much" now they all hated her.
—
Ocean stood, frozen to the floor. Her cousin and friend Emmie was kissing Axel. Ocean took a few breaths. Of course Emmie was way too cool to be her friend, I mean she practically was the chosen one. But Ocean had thought and hoped that Emmie thought she was as cool as Ocean thought Emmie was cool. I mean, Ocean's ego had taken a real blow after her rejection from Caden. She hoped that it had made her more humble, more likable. I mean, a real life boy had kissed her. But he had asked someone else to the dance. And then kissed someone else. "Em... Emmie?" Ocean stuttered. Emmie's face broke, her hands bunching at her sides. Ocean turned and ran. "Ocean! H-hold on, it's n-not what you t-think!" She didn't run because she was upset, but because she was livid. That stupid boy Axel, who she had always hated, had found a way to ruin her life even more. "Ocean please listen!" Emmie shouted. Ocean ran into the bathroom, not bothering to lock the door and used a gush of water to slam the door shut. Her black dress was soggy and covered in water. Ruined. Mascara leaked out of her eyes. She would not be the wounded girl who was rejected again. She was the one who rejected Axel. She didn't care what he did or where he was. She didn't care what other people thought of her. Not Axel, not Emmie, not Star, nobody.
"Hello-" Someone started. "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" Screamed Ocean. Ocean opened her eyes and saw Trystan Lark. His eyes were open with alarm. "You know?" He started, his face pale white. Ocean tilted her head. "What?" Trystan cursed and made a signal. Annabelle fell to the ground beside Ocean, coming from a vent. Another Neverseen member dropped, grabbing her wrists. Oceans' long skirt ripped as the agent dug their fingernails into her flesh. Ocean grunted, kicking and flailing. Trystan placed a choker around her neck. It looked almost like a nexus. Ocean choked as her vision turned red. The agent beckoned Annabelle and Trystan back up into the vent, leaving Ocean alone. Emmie knocked on the door. "O-ocean?" She called. Ocean ran her dark brown-black hair through her fingers and cracked her neck, flexing her fingers carefully. Her brain felt messed with. Emmie slowly opened the door. "Are you ok?" She asked, glancing at Ocean's ripped skirt. Instead of anger, Ocean felt a calm sort of superiority. Vengeance.
"What Emmie? What do you want? Or more like who. Axel, Jacob, Neil? Maybe even Brennon, who you were dancing with earlier?" Ocean crossed her arms. Emmie stumbled back. "I didn't- it's not what-" "It's not what you think it is? I'm pretty sure I know exactly what it is." Ocean cut off. "I know you like Axel, I didn't mean to..." Started Emmie. "No I don't. He's the most infuriating human being I've ever met. I guess that's why you two work so well together." Ocean enunciated each word with a flick of venom. "Ocean, I didn't mean to..." Started Emmie, her face contorting into a look of pain as tears leaked from her eyes. "Just leave me alone." Said Ocean, shoving past her. A grin spread over Oceans face. It screamed murder.
Everett P.O.V.
My crush was getting bad. Not in a negative way, I suppose. Unless sweating and feeling your heart beat like crazy when the guy you like smiles or waves at you is a bad thing. Everytime Jacob looked at me, my emotions went ballistic. I would just nod a little and look away, my cheeks red. I'd give just about anything to be a vanisher in those times.
According to Emmie, she was planning to break up with Jacob soon. Which had to be a good thing, because I couldn't crush on my friend's boyfriend forever, now could I? I mean, I didn't think he'd like me anyways. I had no idea how he even noticed me in the first place.
Now let's just hope Jacob likes me at least half as much as I like him.
—
I helped Emmie get ready in the last few hours before the gala.
"Ugh, something feels wrong about this dress."
I shook my head. "Don't worry about it. You look perfect."
She smiled at me through the mirror as I helped curl her hair. "Thanks, Ev. What would I do without you?"
"Show up late and turn into a mess. Bonus points if you get embarrassed and want to die in a hole."
"Hey, I'm not that bad!" Emmie laughed. She smirked suddenly. "So, you have a thing for Jacob, don't you?"
I could feel my face get red. "What? Nah, he's your-"
"-soon to be ex," she finished for me. "Don't worry, I'm cool with it. In fact, you two would probably be a better couple than he and I were."
I smiled at the thought. "Really?"
Emmie nodded. "For sure. In fact, you should ask him out! Show other girls they don't need to be scared. What's so wrong with taking the first move?"
I nodded confidently. "You're right, Em."
Mina P.O.V.
I headed to my usual table during study hall, but stopped dead in my tracks when I heard a quiet sniffle. I turned around and peeked around the corner, gasping when I saw who the crying boy leaning against the bookshelf was.
"Jacob! Are you alright?" I asked gently, sitting down on the floor next to him. "Come on, Jay, tell me what's wrong."
He wiped his tears away with a mumble of, "It's nothing important."
I crossed my arms.
"Alright, alright. It's just that... Emmie and I have been arguing a lot lately."
I sighed. "Aw, I'm sorry. I mean, at least you didn't dump her just for missing a date, like my idiot brother did." I tried to make him laugh, but it was no use.
Jacob looked at the ground. "I don't deserve her."
I hugged my best friend. "You deserve the whole world, Jay."
He looked at me with teary eyes and grinned, making my heart flutter wildly. At that moment, I knew.
I was in love with Jacob, my best friend.
Jacob P.O.V.
It was... confusing.
There's no way Mina likes me. I mean, she's my best friend! Best friends can't crush on each other!
I knew Emmie was going to break up with me soon, and I was ready for it. We weren't fit for each other, that we both knew. But even if Emmie and I broke up, Mina and I still couldn't be together, because there was someone else to be taken into consideration.
Everett. Shy, quiet, adorably timid Everett.
I wasn't sure if I exactly liked her though. I felt something for her, and it wasn't a platonic feeling.
And I knew she felt the same way.
So who was the one I liked? Mina or Everett?
Darian + Ace P.O.V.
Darian flinched as the flames spread across his palms. They were so vivid and sent a jolt of heat through his body. Darian flicked his hand around, sure that the sweat drenching his palm would take out the fire. Darian eventually gave up and put his palm under the sink, watching as the flame erupted into a guzzle of smoke. "Darian?" Squeaked a voice. Darian's eyes widened and he turned to see Cara standing at the door. "Are you ok?" She asked. "Yeah, I'm fine, it's nothing." Cara's brow raised in disbelief. "Anyway, what were you saying during class?" Asked Cara. Darian cringed thinking back. He had started to say that she was the prettiest nicest girl he had ever met but luckily the bell had rang before his stupid smart mouth had gotten away with anything. "Oh nothing." Said Darian. Cara's cheeks bloomed red. Darian cursed under his breath. Cara was a telepath. Cara took a deep breath then leaned forwards and gave him a quick kiss. Darian gasped.
Ace gasped. He had been walking in the hallway, thinking about his matchmaking packet when he saw Cara. Kissing Darian. Why Darian? Darian wasn't nearly as handsome and charming as Ace. If you could call Ace charming. Ace gulped. Did he like Cara? Either way, Cara didn't like him anymore. Cara and Darian left the hallway and entered the more crowded hallway, Ace skirting a few feet behind. "Hey Ace, gee we haven't talked in awhile." Said Elodie. Cara turned and saw Elodie and Ace talking. Ace clenched his jaw. He knew what he had to do. Ace gave Elodie a quick kiss. The loud chatter of the hallway quieted, with the occasional, "I'm the chosen one." Ace pulled away. Elodie's face was flushed red. "Ahem. As you were." Said Ace.
Once everyone had looked away Ace turned back to Elodie. "D-dance?" Asked Elodie. Ace grimaced. It's not that he didn't like Elodie, well he didn't, but he also didn't like using her like this. Ace quickly washed away his guilt. "Of course." Said Ace. Elodie grinned happily before skipping away. "What was that about?" Asked Axel, his tone dull. He was obviously still upset about how Ace had advised him to ask Noctem to the dance and ditch Ocean, who had ditched him before. Ace gave Axel a glare and walked off. He needed to be alone. Now.
Caden P.O.V.
Caden straightened his suit and grinned at himself in the mirror. "Laaaaame!" Came Paisley's floating voice out of the bathroom, where she was touching up her makeup. Caiden shot her a look. "Ruuuuuude!" Caden took a deep breath and walked glanced down the staircase. The walls were sparkling and pale blue balloons lit up the dark room, pulsing with disco lights and streamers. Aiden was greeting the few guests who had already arrived. A huge banner read:
Welcome to Aidens Winnowing gala; Thanks for coming!
Caden mimed barfing. Paisley walked out of the bathroom and smiled. "I do love parties." She said, her eyes glowing. Caden grinned back. "I love a good party too. Well, except for my snotty brother's matchmaking one." Paisley shrugged and rushed down the staircase, embracing her friends. Caden sighed and started down the staircase. "What's up mister, I don't want to be here." Said a familiar sassy voice. "How did you know?" Said Caden to Ocean. "Eh, I feel that way today as well." Ocean was leaning against the staircase railing. She was wearing a black dress with a bodice made of black leaves and a long tulle skirt.
"Lucky us eh?" Said Caden. Ocean smiled but then quickly ducked behind him with an alarmed expression. Caden gave her a confused look then glanced at the door. Ace and Axel arrived at the door, standing next to Noctem and Elodie. The girls looked happy and excited, the boys, not so much. Axel saw Ocean and gave him a murderous glare. "Wow, what did you do to him?" Said Caden. Ocean rolled her eyes. "You don't want to know." Then she glanced again at the door and gave him a knowing smile, walking away. Hydra walked over to Caden smiling. "Hi." She said simply. "Pretty neat party right? Can't wait to see what my gala is like." Said Caden. Hydra smiled and glanced around the room, the silver light of the disco washing over her, painting her like an angel or a glowing star. Her dress was also made of black lace, similar to Oceans.
"Care to dance?" Asked Caden. Hydra took his arm and walked to the dance floor. Axel was dancing with Emmie until she ran away. He chased after her, saying something. Caden glanced over to Ocean, who was sitting on the ground all alone. All of her friends were across the room, dancing together. Hydra glanced towards Ocean. "You should ask her to dance." Said Hydra. "Wouldn't that be a bit...awkward?" Said Caden. Hydra stuck her tongue out at Caden. "If you won't I will." Hydra walked up to Ocean.
Ocean walked out with her, smiling, though her eyes were rimmed with the slightest tinge of red. Ace was standing by the door, holding two cups of punch and sending Darian the death glare. Darian, who had been invited as a plus one, was simply skulking by the corner wall. "Wow, this place is filled with people who don't want to be here. I should make a club, although I might be in too many clubs." Said Caden. "Can I join the club?" Asked Jolie. She tilted her head, referring to the large bulletin board. It showed Aidens list, and also Aidens dance list. Basically, he had a line of girls waiting to dance with him. "Did you sign up?" Asked Hydra.
Jolie scoffed. "Not a chance. I'm not going to be one of those desperate girls." Jolie's eyes flickered to Elyria for a second, who was dancing with Laia. "Don't even get me started about Will." Said Hydra. Will had stayed home, since he wasn't invited, and Caden knew from Hydra that she wasn't speaking to him. And Ivy had broken up with him. But he probably didn't care. Anyways, it wasn't Cadens job to confront him. The music ramped up and Caden winced. Then something caught his eye. A messenger outside was beckoning to him. "One second guys, I'll be right back." Another messenger was beckoning to Hydra. They both rushed outside and grabbed the envelopes. They were matchmaking sheets. Caden took a deep breath and opened his.
5. Jayda
26. Chiara
62. Dipity
93. Lea
Caden released a breath. Hydra wasn't on his list. Caden glanced over at her list.
7. Tavern
19. Ace
35. Damian
54. Cruise
78. Trystan
91. Axel
He wasn't on her list either. Hydra folded the letter and put it in her pocket. "We still have four more lists to receive anyway." She said. Caden put on a grin. "You're right." Jolie came out and grabbed both of their lists, scanning them with her eyes. Ocean peeked over, an excited look on her face. "No fair." She whispered. Jolie looked at Hydra. "You two are dating right?" She whispered. Hydra whispered something back. Ocean joined in the whispering. "I'll just leave you guys to your girl chat." Said Caden, walking back inside.
Jolie P.O.V.
Jolie stood by the drink stand, watching as each girl desperately added their name onto the list waiting for Aiden to dance with them. Yeah, she had put her name on with reluctance, even though she had said to Hydra that she wouldn't, (and been shoved by other girls multiple times while trying to do so) but that didn't mean much anymore. "You seem upset, is it him?" Asked Talli, nodding at Aiden. Jolie sighed. Talli always knew what was bugging me, it was a special quality they had. "Maybe, maybe not." Jolie fingered her tulle dress, adorned with thread flowers that perfectly matched the finger jewels and blue heels with gold patterns she was wearing.
"I think I should go, the dancing is starting and-" Started Jolie. "Come on, don't leave me alone!" Said Talli, smiling. They held Jolie's shoulders, looking her in the eye. "Do you want to show him you don't need him? Show him you're better off without him?" They asked. Jolie took a deep breath and nodded. "Then get out there, and show him." Jolie nodded and walked onto the dance floor, searching for whoever would annoy Aiden the most. She spotted Caden and walked over. He had danced with Hydra at least five times, and Ocean twice, due to Hydra's insistence, before Ocean took off somewhere else. Now Hydra and Caden were just chatting and laughing. "Hey guys, how's the night been going?" Asked Jolie. Caden nodded. "So far so good, but not for all of us." Hydra shoved him. "What happened?" Asked Jolie, with a concerned look. "Emmie and Axel kissed in front of Ocean, Noctem, and Neil." Said Hydra.
Caden turned to Hydra. "I'm still confused, I understand why Neil would be upset, everyone knows they have history, but what about Ocean?" Hydra exchanged a glance with Jolie. "It doesn't matter, anyway, I should probably find Ocean." Hydra walked away. "Care to dance?" Asked Jolie. Caden took her hand and led her to the dance floor. "He's looking." Said Caden, grinning. "Why are you so happy?" Asked Jolie. "I take pleasure in making my perfect brother uncomfortable." Caden leaned in close and whispered in her ear. "And so should you." Jolie rolled her eyes playfully. Aiden walked over to Jolie and Caden. They stopped dancing. "I believe you're my next dance." Said Aiden with his hand out. Jolie gave Caden a "save meeee" wave and walked off with Aiden.
A slow song came on and the dance began. Jolie made a point to step on Aidens toes more than a little, muttering an "oops!" or "Oh sorry, I'm just sooooo clumsy!" She could tell it was driving him mad. When the dance ended, Aiden briskly walked away from Jolie. Jolie stood alone on the dance floor, feeling a rush of longing as she saw Aiden walk away from her. Wiping her eye quickly, Jolie stumbled up the steps, invisible to the raging crowd. In Aiden's room, she grabbed a piece of paper and quickly scribbled a note.
I'm sorry for everything.
I hope you are too.
Goodbye.
Jolie wiped her eyes again and fled from the room, from the party, from Aiden. She quickly ran down the stairs, through the dance floor, out of the front doors, down the steps. She turned back and saw Aiden chasing her. Her shoe slipped off but she didn't have time. She leaped back home, watching as Aidens face faded away. When she got there she stumbled to the ground, her head spinning. She had faded.
Talli P.O.V.
Talli looked at the self in the mirror. Today they were going to their thirteenth day back at foxfire. Talli didn't really fit in with the popular kids, like Emmie, who everyone thought was the chosen one, but they weren't a weird loner freak. They were friends with Jolie, who was pretty popular. But if you could ask what their least and most favorite thing was, it would be drama. They didn't like it when it happened to them, but to watch a juicy breakup go down, it was better than any tv show or book. So when they subtly convinced some random guest to invite them to Aidens grand Winnowing Gala, they were expecting drama, but they got even more than they asked for. "This isn't fair! That jerk! She's such a player!" Noctem squealed, which turned into a scream as Neil threw a punch at Axel. Axel's head snapped back. Neil quickly advanced but Axel used his skills as a mesmer to force Neil back. Noctem jumped between them and drew her brow, inflicting Neil with a sharp current of pain.
Talli jumped in too and raised their arm, summoning an onslaught of first to freeze Neil before he recovered. Aiden's parents broke in and broke everything up, sending the kids back to the dance floor. Talli felt a mixture of the urge to laugh and the urge to check on Neil and Axel. Foxfire was an umpire of drama, and Talli was here for it.
Cara P.O.V.
Oh my gosh. The winnowing gala was less than 4 hours away and it surprisingly snuck past me until the very last minute. "AHHH, THE WINNOWING GALA IS IN FOUR HOURS AND I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!" I gasped in full panic mode.
Luckily my sister, Noctem, was there to save the day. "Don't worry, you know we always have extra dresses" she reassured me. I nodded as I looked through the tens of dresses hanging in the dress closet.
A couple dresses in white, pink, red and rose gold. I chose pink..
I sat down, holding the dress as my mind flashed back to before. I kissed darian... Darian !!!! I was only in second year and I kissed someone!! this was way too early.. I blushed though, as darian had said that I was pretty. I sighed and then got ready for the Winnowing Gala. I tried not to dress up too much because this wasn't my Winnowing Gala and I was just a plus one. So I braided my hair and added gems and then waited for my sister. Noctem walked inside. She was glowing in her periwinkle blue dress, with a tulle skirt and embroidered blue flowers. "You seem happy." I said, grinning. "Well, I am going to the dance with Axel." Noctem tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Eeeek! You must be so excited! I just feel bad for Star." I said. Noctem rolled her eyes. "I mean, it makes sense nobody would like her, I mean, you can't get anymore desperate." Noctem snapped. "Hey, I don't like that tone." Said Sophie, walking in. Noctem rolled her eye's again, but this time she was smiling. "Are you guys excited?" Sophie asked. "Yesss, now can we go?" Asked Noctem, vibrating with excitement. "Yes, you may go." Said Sophie, a grin splitting across her face. Noctem rushed outside, grabbing my arm and pulling me along with her.
—
Once we arrived we headed inside. I felt happiness coursing through me. Noctem immediately seized up, noticing Emmie and Axel dancing. "I'm sure it's nothing." I said, glancing at Noctem's face, filled with rage. "That girl is such a boyfriend stealing jerk." Noctem muttered. "Boyfriend?" I asked. Noctem blushed. "I mean, we're not official yet, but, I mean, who knows?" Noctem said. Emmie broke away, storming off. Axel chased behind her. I couldn't make out what they were saying, but by the end they seemed...friendly. Noctem's hands curled into fists. She quickly stalked over to Axel and pulled him into a dance. I skulked by the edge of the dance floor, waiting, watching. "Hey." Said a voice. Cara turned, her heart beating fast as she saw Clementine. "Please, just leave me alone." Said Cara, ducking her head. "Come on girl, I just want to catch up, how are you?" Cara gave a small uncertain smile. "Fine...?" "Really, nothing out of the normal?" Clementine asked, a slow drawl in her voice. "Come on, you can talk to me. Wasn't I your loyal friend for so long?"
Cara shrugged her shoulders. "Nothing really- just, Darian." Clementine tilted her head. "Darian?" "We...we kissed. It's not a big deal." Said Cara. She was still eager to please, still under her spell. Clementine had that manner about her. She was a beguiler after all. "Interesting." Said Clementine. Her gaze slowly dragged across the room, lingering on Darian. She looked at him with the intensity of fire, channeling her power into it. "Wha-what are you doing?" I asked, feeling uncomfortable. "Oh nothing. Thanks for introducing me to your friend by the way, I'm sure we'll get along nicely." Clementine walked away, leaving me dumbfounded. "Hey, back off!" I turned. It was Axel. Neil was frozen, his arm extended towards Emmie. Emmie gasped, "Axel?" The flames surrounding her snuffed out.
"Don't you dare touch her." Axel glared at Neil. "Let's go, Emmie." he pulled her away to a hallway. Noctem stormed over to me. "This is unbelievable!" She shrieked. "He literally left me in the middle of the dance floor to "rescue" her!!!" "Calm down." I said. "Remember, this night is all about having a good time. Even if Emmie was trying to steal Axel, he asked you for a reason. He likes you, so don't let anyone ruin that." I chirped. Noctems lips curled into a smile as a flush rose to her cheeks.
"Well, what are you waiting for? You spent all of this time waiting for him to come to him, carefully flirting and pining for him but not making the first move. Now that he has, it's time to make your move! Go to him!" I said, giggling. Noctem sighed and clenched my hands, letting out the smallest of squeals before jolting into a fast walk towards the hall. I followed behind her, a smile on my lips. That smile quickly washed off of my face as I took in the scene. A bunch of students were gathered around Axel and Emmie, who were...kissing.
They broke away and Emmie stared around, a look of horror in her face as she saw Ocean and Noctem. Em... Emmie?" Ocean breathed.
Emmie turned to Axel, horror written on her face. Ocean ran off. "Ocean! H-hold on, it's n-not what you t-think!" Ocean ran off and Emmie chased after her. Neil stomped over to Axel and shoved him, hard. The crowd gasped and I got shoved over, right into Noctem. Her face was pure rage. She stormed away and I followed, glancing reluctantly back at Neil, just as he threw a punch.
