Between Sea and Land: Part 2
Korra leaned back in the small pool, her tail wading softly in the water. She closed her eyes, her head leaning back on the edge. The air was natural for her to breathe, but it was harder than water to put in her lungs. Light footsteps neared the pool, and Korra knew it was Asami. Who else has the guts to near one of her people? "Hello, Feisty," a soft voice greeted. Asami. Korra grunted in response, her tail splashing in the water. "Come on, Korra. Lighten up," Asami sat behind the mermaid, threading her hands through her soft hair.
"Why? You took me away from my people, killed like three of my most favorable scouts, and your ship nearly killed me," Korra said, not reacting to the attention she was getting.
"This ship isn't going anywhere, I didn't shoot the dolphins, and the water you're laying in is healing saltwater," Asami explained, testing the temperature of the water with her hand.
"Y-you didn't shoot my brothers?"
"Your brothers?"
"Yeah. The fish are my brothers, and the water and weather and my friends," Korra explained.
"You sound like Pocahontas," Asami giggled.
"Who's that?"
"Never mind. So what do you mermaids do for fun?"
"Games. We play, swim for fun, race, play sports, hunt, follow boats," Korra said the last one with a grin.
"Is that what you were doing?"
"No. My father told me go check out what was going on with the heavy tides, which was caused by the motor in your boat," Korra turned over, facing Asami.
"Oh. Well what's the harm? We were going to leave once the..."
"The what?"
"The fishing party was finished," Asami finished.
"Fishing?"
Asami nodded. "I'm so sorry, Korra," Asami looked at Korra's wide eyes.
"No. Your people are ruthless. I'll be killed before my first meal with you!"
"Korra calm down!"
"Never! You people are demons! Sharks! Eels!" With that, Korra splashed out of the pool, struggling to get to the edge of the boat. She needed to get back into the sea.
"Asami! Get down!" Korra heard a male voice, then a whizzing sound. Next thing she knew, a searing pain was pulsing through her tail. An arrow.
"Mako! What's with you and shooting things?!"
Korra soon slipped back into the sea, her tail bleeding. She had to swim. She needed to get back to the South Reef. It was the only way to save her family. But she couldn't. She was getting hurt more than needed today, and the weakness from the other animals getting killed wasn't helping. "Korra!" Korra looked around, hearing the familiar voice. "Korra! What happened to you?"
"I need to get back to the reef," Korra told Jinora, her friend.
Jinora nodded, carrying her away from the boat. Jinora winced, feeling a new cut in her arm. "Korra," she showed the older girl.
"I need to tell my father," Korra examined the wound. "The fishers are back," Korra warned.
Jinora nodded, swimming faster. Korra was in danger, and so was the species. The extinction of the mermaids would start with the princess, and soon, the rest of them would be destroyed.
