The Adoption Process
Asami
Korra and I walked back to where Mako was waiting.
"Okay, Mako. We've decided to take Cordelia with us. We're going to try to adopt her." I said.
"Are you sure? The government might shut you down because you're not married yet and because some of them are, well..." Mako replied.
"Homophobic? Yeah, we know. And we talked about the whole 'not married' thing." Korra said with a slight smile.
"Okay then. I'll back you up in that, then." Lin said, walking in with Cordelia at that time. She set her down, and Cordelia ran over and hugged Korra's leg.
"See you later Chief, Mako." Korra said, walking outside. I picked up Cordelia and followed. Once we were all situated in the car, with Korra in the driver's seat, she said to me,
"Now that we plan to adopt Cordelia, we should really start planning for the wedding."
"Yeah, we should." I said. "We can start when we get home." It turned out that we couldn't start right away, because one of us had to keep an eye on Cordelia. As we sat down in my dad's old study, Korra had to grab Cordelia to prevent her from leaving the room and wandering the house.
"She's going to be handful." Korra commented, laughing.
"Yeah. But you'll be a great mom. So, summer or fall wedding?" I asked.
"Fall, so people aren't really hot during the ceremony." Korra answered.
"Should we have a theme?" I asked, contemplating a few ideas.
"I'm not sure. You have any ideas?" Korra responded.
"What about one of the four element?"
"Not fire." Korra said, quickly and firmly.
"Yeah." I agreed, thinking about how my mom was killed my a firebender. "Though it would look really cool."
"Okay, we'll think about it. I don't really like the idea of air or earth." Korra said, thinking.
"Okay, that leaves us with fire and water." I said.
"Maybe we should do something like a combination of water and maybe mechanics..." Korra said.
"Why don't we wait a little bit to think about themes. Let's spend some time with Cordelia." I said, looking around the study. "Korra, where is Cordelia?"
"She was right here." Korra said, gesturing right next to her.
"We need to split up and search. She can't have gone very far." I said. "You take the top floor, and I'll take the ground floor."
"Alright." Korra then rushed out of the room. A few seconds later, I heard her pounding up the stairs. I exited the study and walked towards the rooms at the front of the house.
"Cordelia! Where are you?" I called. Just then, I heard a crash on the stairs. I ran over, and saw Cordelia standing next to Korra, who was lying on her back at the foot of the stairs.
"Ow." she said, standing up and brushing herself off.
"What happened?" I questioned.
"I was looking around upstairs, and I saw Cordelia at the top of the stairs. I ran over to her, but I tripped on something, and I fell down the stairs. Cordelia then walked down the stairs.
"Momma!" Cordelia cried, running over and hugging Korra.
"D-Did you hear that?" Korra said happily, stooping over to hug her.
"Yes, I did." I said, pulling Korra over and kissing her.
Korra
"Cordelia, that's your mommy." I said, pointing to Asami as she was preparing dinner.
"Mommy." Cordelia repeated, looking up at Asami.
"Sami, I'm gonna go pull one of the extra beds into our room for Cordelia." I said. "Just call me when it's time for dinner if I'm not down by then.
"Okay." Asami said, stirring some noodles. As I was leaving the kitchen, Cordelia started to follow me.
"No, Cordelia. Stay here with Mommy." I said, stopping her.
"Okay." Cordelia said, walking back to Asami. I walked up the stairs and into one of the spare bedrooms. I then started to push the bed out.
-
Asami heard a few grunts and crashing sounds, and smiled.
"Korra must be having some trouble." Asami thought. Just then, Asami saw Cordelia knocking over some boxes on the counter. Asami laughed and started to clean up.
-
"Asami! I need some help up here!" I yelled down the stairs.
"I can't right now, Korra! Do you want these noodles to be limp and overcooked?" Asami replied.
"No..." I said, bending a blast of air at the bed. It moved forward a couple inches. "Aargh!" I yelled in frustration.
------------
A couple minutes later, I walked back into the kitchen.
"That was a real hassle. Hopefully when we redesign the mansion, Cordelia can get her own special room." I thought.
"So, did you get the bed in?" Asami asked, pulling out some plates from the cabinet.
"Yeah, I did. Do you need any help with dinner?" I asked.
"You and Cordelia could set the table." she replied, handing me the plates.
"Okay." I said. "C'mon, Cordelia." I handed her some silverware and started to lay out three places.

Later that night, I felt Korra get up. I wasn't unusual for her to get up in the middle of the night, but then she started shaking. I sat up.
"Korra, what's wrong?" I asked. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw tears streaming down her face. "Did you have a nightmare?" Korra nodded."It's been three years since you had a nightmare. What brought them back?" I said, hugging her tightly.
"This one wasn't exactly like my other ones." Korra said, calming down a tiny bit.
"What was it about?" I asked, starting to rub her back.
"It was about... Cordelia. And you." she replied, a fresh wave of tears hitting her. "Zaheer was torturing both of you. Amon and Unalaq were helping him." Korra started to sob.
"Shh, shh. It's okay, sweetie. We're all safe here. I'm fine. Cordelia is fine." I said. Just then, I saw Cordelia sit up and rub one of her eyes.
"Mommy? Momma?" Cordelia said, getting up and then sitting on our bed.
"Hey Cordelia." I said. still rubbing Korra's back.
"What's wrong with Momma?" she asked, crawling over.
"She had a nightmare, that's all." I answer.
"Oh." Cordelia said. She then crawled over and hugged Korra. Korra then turned around and gave Cordelia a bone-crushing hug.
"Cordelia, why don't you get back in your bed?" I said after a minute or two. Cordelia got up and laid back down on her bed. Within a few minutes, everyone was asleep again.
-----------
The next morning, after breakfast, everyone got into the car.
"So, Asami, do you know how we adopt Cordelia?" Korra asked.
"Not really." I replied. "I was thinking we would just go to City Hall and ask."
"Sounds like a plan." Korra responded. We soon pulled up in front of City Hall. We walked inside and up to the woman at the front desk.
"Hi." I said to her.
"Hello, how may I help you?" she droned, like she was already bored with the conversation.
"Where would we go if we wanted to adopt someone?" Korra inquired.
"Down the hall on the right, up the stairs, and enter the first door on your left." she said.
"Thank you." Korra said, practically dragging me down the hall. When we reached the door, after following the instructions that the woman at the front desk gave us. I knocked.
"Come in!" a voice said from inside the room. I walked in. The woman inside jumped up.
"Hello, Ms. Sato! My name is Gwendolyn Sharpe, and I handle adoptions here in Republic City!" Gwendolyn said. "Who's the lucky guy?"
"Well, she's not really a guy..." I said. Just then, Korra walked in, carrying Cordelia
"Oh. I see." Gwendolyn said, turning business-like.
"How would we go about adopting Cordelia?" Korra said.
"Well, Avatar Korra, our process is much more relaxed than other nations." Gwendolyn said, pulling out some papers from her desk. "You'll have to sign some papers, of course, and the request will have to be processed. Some people will have to go and observe your house and how you go about your day. Are there any special conditions about Cordelia that you'd like me to know?" she finished.
"Well, she was living with the triads for a while, up until a day ago." I said.
"What?! Okay, I'll make a note." she said, writing it down on one of the papers. "If you want to take these papers, look them over and sign 'em, that's fine. They should be returned in two weeks or less. Because Cordelia has nowhere to go, she will be allowed to stay with you until the request is processed."
"Thank you." Korra said, picking up Cordelia. I picked up the papers and slipped them into my bag.
"We'll have these papers returned within the next two weeks!" I said, following Korra and Cordelia out of the office.
-----------About 2 months later
"Korra, can you get the mail?" I called. I needed to make sure the blueprints for the new Satomobile were ready to go. Then I heard a shriek from the hall.
Korra
While I was going through the stack of envelopes, something caught my eye. It was a letter from the adoption agency! I shrieked and ran to Asami's office.
"Asami!" I yelled as I ran into her office.
"What is it?" she asked, looking up from her work. In response, I passed her the envelope. She shrieked and started fumbling around for a letter opener. She shortly gave up and just ripped it open.
"What does it say?" I asked eagerly.
"It says it's been approved!" Asami replied. I pulled her up from her chair and kissed her.
"Asami! We're moms!" I said.
"I know!" Asami squealed, kissing me again.
