Insults and Injuries
Asami
"How's she doing?" I asked the doctor in the room.
"Her vital signs have stabilized, but as you can see, she's still in a coma." the doctor replied. "There hasn't been any indication when she'll wake up." It had been two weeks since the incident at Future Industries. I was getting along fine with my wheelchair, but Korra hadn't woken up. As Mako drove Cordelia and I home, he asked
"Did the doctors tell you if Korra's going to wake up soon?"
"No. They said they've had no indication." I answered.
"Maybe Momma's talking to one of her past lives." Cordelia piped up.
"Maybe, Cor'." I said, knowing full well that Korra had no access to her past lives.
-----------2 Weeks Later
"Mommy, the phone's ringing!" Cordelia called.
"Okay, I'll be right there." I replied, moving my wheelchair out from behind the desk and out into the hall. I picked up the vibrating phone.
"Hello, Asami Sato speaking." I said in a flat tone.
"Hey, 'Sami." a tired voice said on the other end of the line.
"Korra?" I said, breathless.
"Yeah, it's me. The doctor says you guys can come see me now." Korra replied.
"Cordelia! Get ready to leave!" I yelled. "We'll be right there." I said to Korra, then hung up. Then I called Mako.
"Hello, Mako here." he said when he picked up.
"Mako, it's Asami. Korra's awake." I said to him. "Could you pick Cordelia and I up?"
"Yeah, of course!" Mako practically shouted. "I'll be right there!"
Korra
Asami burst into the hospital room, with Mako and Cordelia trailing behind. She wheeled over and kissed me, before practically crushing me in a hug.
"Ah! Asami, watch the injuries." I said in a light voice.
"Korra! You had us all worried half to death! You, in fact, almost died! Never do something so incredibly stupid like that again!" Asami said before bursting into tears. I pulled her into another hug, rubbing her back as I did so.
"It's okay, Asami. It's okay. I'm here now." I responded quietly. "Come over here, Cordelia." Cordelia walked over to the bed, and hugged both me and Asami.
"Have they told you when you can come home?" Mako asked, breaking the silence.
"No, but I expect it'll only be a couple of days." I replied. "There's no reason to keep me in here except to make sure I don't pass out again." The I turned my attention back to Asami. "So, how have you been getting along in your wheelchair, 'Sami?"
"It hasn't been terrible. Obviously, I haven't been able to go up any stairs or drive, so I've had pretty limited mobility." Asami replied.
"And how has Cor' been doing?" I asked, looking at Cordelia as I said it.
"I've been doing fine, Momma." Cordelia said. "When you come home, I can show you a new water move I learned!"
"Yeah, she's been really excited about showing you. So make sure you get home quickly." Asami said, laughing a bit. Just then, a doctor stepped into the room.
"I'm sorry for interrupting, but Avatar Korra needs to rest now." she said apologetically.
"It's okay." Asami said. "We'll leave her to rest."
"Bye Korra. We'll see you soon." she said to me. Then Mako, Cordelia, and Asami left the room.
-----------2 days later
"Let's go, Naga!" I said to her. Naga took off and started running through the streets of Republic City. "You know the way home, right girl?" I asked. Naga barked joyfully in response. A few minutes later, Naga skidded to a stop in front of Sato Mansion.
"Naga, go around to the backyard." I whispered. "If you see anyone, make sure they don't see you." Naga barked softly in acknowledgement. I slipped off her and crept quietly into the house. I didn't hear or see Asami or Cordelia around. "That's strange." I thought. "Cordelia is usually running around the house." As I snuck into the darkened kitchen, the lights were flicked on.
"SURPRISE!"
Asami
"SURPRISE!" I shouted along with everyone else. Korra spun around and looked at me.
"How did you know I was coming home?" she asked suspiciously.
"I had the hospital call me if or when you left." I explained. "Then I just got everyone to come over here." Korra looked around the room and saw Mako, Bolin, Lin, Tenzin, and everyone else in Republic City that cared about her.
"Thank you so much, guys!" Korra said, grinning from ear to ear. The room broke out in a cacophony of noise.
"Welcome back, kid."
"It's great that you're out of the hospital."
"It's good to see you, Korra." After about a minute of congratulations and questions, Korra walked over to me.
"C'mon, 'Sami. I want to talk to you without everyone around." Korra said in a low voice, wheeling me out of the room.
"Sorry I wasn't around to help out or to prevent that." Korra said apologetically, gesturing at my broken leg.
"Korra, it's fine. If you hadn't shown up when you did, I probably would've been hurt more. And anyway, I've been getting along fine." I replied.
"Yeah, but-"
"Korra, stop talking." I said, pulling her in for a kiss.
-----------Next Morning
I pushed my wheelchair into the kitchen to find Korra making pancakes.
"Morning, 'Sami!" Korra said cheerfully while flipping a pancake.
"Morning, Korra." I answered, picking up the newspaper lying on the table. "Korra, you might want to see this..." I said, holding out her newspaper to her. She walked over and took it. After a couple minutes, she threw it back on the table and went back to cooking.
"Korra, what's wrong?" I asked, concerned.
"See for yourself." Korra replied, gesturing at the paper. I picked it up and read
"AVATAR DEFEATED!"
"Three weeks ago, a group of peaceful protestors was gathered around Future Industries Tower, when police arrived on the scene and tried to clear a path to the door. Soon enough, Asami Sato, the CEO of Future Industries, arrived for work, and provoked the protestors. The protestors then decided to attack. The police pulled Ms. Sato behind an earth wall to shield her. About 10 minutes later, Avatar Korra Sato arrived with her 8 year old daughter, Cordelia. The Avatar then proceeded to attack the protestors by going into the Avatar State. But she soon dropped out of the Avatar State and challenged a sole protestor. But as quickly as the fight began, it ended when two other protestors stepped up to defend their fellow protestor. Avatar Korra was rushed to the hospital, and remained in a coma for two weeks." I finished the article and set the newspaper down on the table. I wheeled my chair over and hugged her.
"Sweetie, you can't listen to this crap. It's the Republic City Times. They didn't mention anything about why you went into the Avatar State or about my broken leg. And you know they aren't remotely nice to pretty much anyone. Do you remember when they found out we were dating?" I said soothingly.
"Yeah, I do. But that pissed me off, and that does too." Korra replied, pulling a serving dish full of pancakes out of the oven and setting it on the table. "Cordelia, breakfast time!" Almost immediately, I heard pounding on the stairs, and Cordelia skidded into the kitchen.
"Yay! Pancakes!" Cordelia yelled, quickly sitting down.
"Not so fast, Cor'." I said. "Can you help set the table?"
"Sure Mommy." Cordelia replied, getting back up and grabbing silverware, plates, and a jug of syrup. As she was putting those things out, Korra set the pancakes down and I wheeled over to the table.
Korra
That afternoon, I was putting together my own surprise for Asami. Cordelia was on Air Temple Island with Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. Asami was at the hospital for her weekly checkup. I called the pro-bending arena and they picked up on the first ring.
"Pro-bending arena, how may I help you?" a droning voice said.
"Hi, I'd like two tickets for the match tonight..."
