Chapter 2: Naruto Is My Cure
"B-but I-"
"Great," I could hear Naruto grumble.
Sasuke's body tensed a bit signalling he heard as well. If I were being honest, I'd say I'm more worried about the fact that I have to talk to him. I was just planning on watching him from a far.
"Temari, I would like to make things easy for Naruto so may I ask you work with Yui, please?"
Yui was a small, quiet girl. More quiet than me if that were even possible.
My lab partner almost opened her mouth to argue but Asuma-sensei shot her a look; his smile never leaving his face.
Temari sighed before gathering her stuff. She quickly whispered in my ear, "Tell me how it goes. If that jerk picks on you, I'll pummel him to a pult."
"I - I'll let you know," I nodded.
Naruto didn't move into the seat next to me until Temari sat down. She glared at him his whole way here.
Asuma-sensei was finally able to start the lesson. I tried focusing but how could I? A god was literally an elbow away from me. As I tried taking notes on cell division, I caught Sasuke stealing looks at me and Naruto. The new kid remained oblivious to everything as he found what was outside the window more entertaining.
"Hinata?" Asuma-sensei called.
I blinked at him, "Y-yes?"
"What happens cytokinesis?"
Again putting me on the spotlight. Why is he doing this?
"I - it's the process of cytoplasm d-dividing," I replied quite easily.
Asuma-sensei nodded then returned to the lesson.
I felt my cheeks burning up again. Out of the corner of my eye, Temari gave me a thumbs up behind her back. I smiled, appreciating her praise.
My eyes quickly flashed in Naruto's direction. His ocean eyes were just watching me with slight interest.
I don't know what got over me. Maybe I got possessed! Yeah! That's right because turning my head and meeting his eyes with my own was such a dare.
I'm such a daredevil.
Naruto's eyes scanned my own pale ones with surprise; especially since he wasn't expecting me to actually look. They never softened and instead he gave me a smirk and returned to his bird gazing outside the window.
Well, isn't he lovely.
---------
"This i-is the library," I pointed out. "You can t-take naps here during o-off periods but in the b-back, just in c - case you snore."
Naruto only nodded briefly, signalling the tour should just continue. It's not like he was going to visit this place anyway.
He hasn't said a single word to me at all. I wasn't surprised though. A bad boy like him has a lot better things to do then to talk to some nerd who can't even complete a sentence without shuttering.
I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear and continued walking, Naruto in tow. Almost every passing girl was admiring him (greeting me in the process). It was lunchtime so some students were just wondering about. Others either in their own dorms or the cafeteria.
"Bookworm!" I have never been so glad to hear his voice.
I turned around. Naruto looked at me confused before also glancing over his shoulder. How could such a simple gesture make my heart pound harder?
Sasuke walked in our direction, his eyes hardened at the sight of Naruto but softened when he saw me. I gave him a grateful smile.
Kiba and Shikamaru were with him. Kiba scowled when he saw Naruto, Shikamaru, being the lazy butt he is, looked too tired to even care about life.
As they drew closer, I nearly ran to them and hugged each of them in turn. The three of us plus my girl - friends all grew up together so we all love each other like siblings, strangely. We tease, we mock, we joked, and Sasuke just loves calling me Bookworm instead of by my actual name.
Naruto didn't know that. So what he did next was completely unexpected.
He took a step and blocked my approaching friends from coming closer.
"This bookworm is with me," he hissed, finally speaking for the first time since Asuma-sensei's class.
Kiba's face grew angry as Shikamaru's grew to complete disapprovement. Sasuke looked like he was in between shock and anger.
Naruto didn't even flinch as he continued, "If you're not looking for a fight, it's best you run off."
"W-wait, Naruto-kun," I started but he didn't seem to hear me.
"Don't you dare bully her!" He continued.
Grabbing my wrist he pulled me in the opposite direction of my baffled friends. Sasuke immediately tried to catch up but I gave him a I'll handle this look. He didn't stop following so I worded, please.
Of all the boys, Sasuke was the most brotherly like figure to me. We were closer than practically the yin and yang. Since our parents were really close in both business and relationship wise, we often saw each other since we were barely two.
He understands me more than the girls do.
So he stopped in his steps as Naruto continued hauling me away. Sasuke looked conflicted as to whether or not to follow or listen to my words.
I gave him a reassuring smile. He gave me the phone gesture to just call him if anything happened. I would, he's my speed dial number 2.
But right now, I could barely register anything since Naruto is practically holding my hand. More of my wrist but the electricity is pretty high.
"N-Naruto-kun wait," I said.
He ignored me and continued dragging me along.
"Naruto-kun!"
He didn't looked at me, "Don't talk to me yet."
And I kept my mouth shut until we left the main school buildings. He continued dragging me towards the courtyard. There were no students anywhere and a park bench sat under an oak tree waiting for someone to sit.
He finally released my hand and slouched in the bench with a long sigh. He hid his face in his hands before running them through his beautiful blonde hair.
I stood awkwardly shifting my weight. Am I supposed to sit down, too? No, that's being to forward. Should I spike a conversation? He would probably think I'm too talky.
"Do those guys always pick on you?" He suddenly asked. I was shakened a bit by his sudden question.
"W-what?"
"Do those jerk holes," he pointed towards the main school building, "Always bother you?"
I shook my head frantically, "They're l-like brothers to m-me. The last t-thing they'd ever do is h - hurt me."
Naruto's eyes suddenly widened twice it's size. His mouth formed a cute "o" as he looked to the ground.
He looked up and gave me a huge goofy smile. My heart almost stop at the sight.
I giggled a bit. He might have the appearance of some bad boy, but I'm pretty sure under all of that, he's a huge dork.
"I shouldn't assume things before actually knowing things," sighed Naruto. "I'm always 75% wrong. Sorry."
"Y-you shouldn't be a - apologizing to me," I replied, my cheeks insanely warm at the moment. "Sasuke-kun is the one."
Naruto scowled, "There ain't no way I'm apologizing to that bastard. He takes up the whole room and since he was here before me, he thinks he runs the damn room."
I blinked, "You're h - his new roommate?"
Naruto nodded, "Sadly."
Sasuke was complaining about it all morning. Since he practically ran the school and the student body president for Konoha, he was used to having his own room. He claims it was claustrophobic with another guy sleeping and snoring just a few inches away from him.
"Why do you do that?" Naruto suddenly asked.
I was confused, "D-do what?"
"That!" He pointed. "Shuttering every time you speak. Why do you do it?"
Do I really shutter every time I speak? Huh, haven't noticed. (Note the sarcasm)
When I shrugged he raised an eyebrow, "You seriously don't know."
I shook my head, "It's p-probably because I'm so shy."
Naruto replied, "You have a point. You're really smart yet you never raise your hand in class or anything."
"I don't l-like the spotlight," I admitted, a little surprised he actually noticed those things about me.
He suddenly patted the seat next to him, "Come here, I'll teach you something."
I slowly sat down, my eyes never leaving his. Naruto's mouth twiched into a smirk as I placed my backpack at the base of my feet.
"I'm going to do something that is going to cure your case of the shutters," he announced, happily. Honestly, I'm still trying to get used to this Naruto Uzumaki. He's too cheery to have been the bad boy from this morning.
"You ready?"
I nodded.
The bad boy slipped an arm behind the bench. My heart beats started racing when he lowered his face to mines so he was staring into my pale eyes. My eyes flashed to his lips then to his eyes.
He caught that action and smirked.
Naruto leaned his face closer to mines. Panic surged through my veins as I tried to focus on his eyes.
He's going to kiss me! Naruto Uzumaki is going to kiss me!
My eyelids were growing heavy when I felt his intoxicating breath tickle my own lips.
We were so close...
Riiiiiing!!!!!
I sprang apart and felt my phone vibrating and ringing in the front part of my backpack.
Annoyance and rage replaced the panic as I looked at the caller ID.
"What?" I answered.
"Where are you, Hinata?" He completely ignored my negative emotions directed at him.
"Outside."
"What are you doing our there? The cafeteria is, inside you know."
"Are you implying I'm dumb? I know that. Idiot!"
Sasuke paused, "Did that guy do anything to you?"
"No why?"
"You just spoke, no, yelled at me without shuttering.
I turned to Naruto. He had a broad grin and shrugged his shoulder. Wow he's good.
"What did he do that took all of us over 14 years to try to do?" His voice sounded curious and almost angry with this. Angry with the fact that he couldn't help me with a problem I had since we were babies.
Sasuke must be feeling betrayed.
"I'll see you in history, Sasuke," I said and hung up.
