17.) Best Kept Secret

It's dark when my eyes slowly open. My head is killing me, I can't breathe, and I'm way too hot. For a split second I forget but then the pain hits me like a freight train, knocking the wind out of me. It comes in flashes the conversation Sasuke and I had after school, if you could have even called it that.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath trying to will away the tears that already threaten to fall. Last thing I remember was lying on the cold stone in a park. But if that were true, how did I end up in a warm bed and in dry clothes? My eyes widen as I remember something. Kiba was there and he had been carrying me somewhere. I realize that I'm in the softest bed I've ever been in and the scent of rain washes over me.

I sit up quickly and I notice that the reason I'm so hot is because there is a large white dog on the bed with me. I glance around the room. There are quite a few soccer trophies on the desk, dresser, and book shelf. Warily I push the soft green blanket off me and swing my feet over the edge of the bed. The cool air greats me with relief but soon after I shiver. Guess Kiba was right about catching a cold.

I wander over to the bookshelf and run my fingers over the metal plaque on a trophy reading, Top Scorer. Why doesn't that surprise me? I squat down and glance at the books in his bookshelf. Half of the titles are unfamiliar to me so I stand and quietly head for the door. No doubt about it, I am in Kiba's bedroom and suddenly I'm beyond embarrassed.

Timidly I go to open the door when it suddenly it opens on its own revealing Kiba on the other side. For some reason I remember the state that he saw me in last and I quickly look away from his gaze my cheeks heating. I must have startled him because it takes him a few moments to speak.

"Hinata and I were going to put in a movie if you want to join us." He finally says looking me over cautiously.

I nod, not trusting my voice at the moment. I then remember the trophies everywhere and decide to go for it. "You have a lot of trophies." I say quietly looking at the one I had examined on his book shelf.

Kiba reaches up and puts the back of his hand against my forehead before he frowns. "You have a fever." He grumbles going over to his closet and rummages around before pulling out a heavy hoody and handing it to me. "That was junior high, we will see if I'm good enough to get any on the high school team." He smiles. "Change into this. I'll let Hinata know you're up. Are you hungry?" He asks going back to the bedroom door.

I realize that I'm very hungry. I feel horrible for being such a burden on him, and the worst part is that I don't even really know him that well. All I can do is look at him as a loss for words overcomes me.

He smiles at me and nods. "It's no problem, my mom made some for you too. I can heat it back up." He leaves me alone in the bedroom rooted to the spot. Hinata was lucky she had a best friend like Kiba, he was being really relaxed about the whole situation.

I'm left speechless by Kiba. We haven't talked much at all this year, and we even got off to a rocky start, yet he is still doing everything he can to help me. I look back on how he reacted in science that first day. He saw it plain as day when I couldn't, even brought it up, but I was to stupid to listen. The ache in my chest slowly starts to return and I force my thoughts to a stop.

I quickly change into the new sweater that Kiba has given me and head slowly to the living room. The room is cozy, maybe the size of a classroom. A soft green carpet cover the floor and cream color walls. Off to my right there are sliding doors and I assume the kitchen is behind them. I see Hinata looking through a ceiling high bookshelf full of movies. She smiles and motions me to come over and help her pick a movie.

We decide on a The Grudge, since nothing else would be safe for me to watch at this point. Kiba takes out blankets and some large pillows from a linen closet and tosses them on the floor in front of the couch. "You two can take the couch." He says tossing a large fuzzy white blanket to me and Hinata on the couch.

I look at him dumbfounded for a second but say nothing. I know that arguing probably won't help. I also know why he's taken the floor, it's because of earlier...I watch as Kiba leaves the living room at the sound of a beep beep beep.

When he returns he comes with a bowl of popcorn and a bowl of soup. "My mom always makes soup when it storms." He says as he hands me the warm bowl. It smells heavenly, making my mouth water and my stomach growl angrily. He hands Hinata the bowl of popcorn and then looks at me with a sigh. "You have a fever you really should be under that blanket rather than holding it."

I gulp and hand Hinata my soup bowl so I can unfold the blanket. It's so huge that I throw the other half over Hinata and quickly take my soup back from her. The food his mother prepared is delicious and I can't help but wonder why we haven't all hung out before. Kiba has to be Hinata's best kept secret.
