Chapter 4: Magical Mystery
~Kokichi's POV, Three Days Later~(sorry if the Latin in this chapter is wrong I'm using google translate, I made sure to bold anything that's Latin. I put the translation by the words so don't worry.)
I sighed walking down the sidewalk with (Y/N) at my side. Today I decided would be a good time to actually go shopping. I was running low on Panta. And sure I could just have (Y/N) poof up some for me, but I don't like asking her for stuff. I don't like asking anyone for anything in general. Also I felt like going for a walk. "Ko can I nap yet?" (Y/N) questioned, poking my cheek. "No." I stated firmly. My gaze became distant as I tuned out the annoying reaper. Nothing interesting has happened in the past few days. I wonder if anything will happen soon. I thought. "If you want something interesting to happen just say the word, I can do anything remember?" She questioned. I ignored her. "Kokichi quit ignoring me!" She wined poking me again. I still ignored her as we passed by the ocean. I stopped to look at the sun glimmering off of the rolling waves. I couldn't help the smile that came to my face. "This is why I always take this route to the shop. The water just looks perfect with the sun reflecting off of it." I said. I looked at (Y/N)'s expression and felt a little shocked. Her smile wasn't there. She had a neutral expression. Yet her eyes glimmered. Seeming to have a twinkle in them as she stared at the water. A small smile adorned her features, not the usual lazy smile that always seemed to be present. This smile seemed more natural. Not forced. And trust me, I would know a thing or two about forced smiles. She breathed out a small relaxed sigh, closing her eyes as a cold wind whipped through, stirring her hair. "Yeah...I love the ocean." She said. "You seem more relaxed than normal." I pointed out. She smiled at me brightly. "Water has that effect on me. Especially the majesty of the ocean. Nothing else I've seen can even begin to compete with the beauty of the ocean when the sun or moon is reflecting off of it's surface." She said. Her gaze wandered back to the water, her (E/C) eyes holding that same twinkle. "Do you swim?" I questioned. "Swim?" She asked. She chuckled. "No. Of course not. I can swim sure. But I doubt I'm any good." She said. I shrugged. "I've never even learned. No one was able to teach me." I said. She shot me a look. "I'm beginning to pick up that you don't know how to do much." She said. I shrugged. "I grew up alone. You know this." I said. She sighed. "That I do." She said, her gaze returning to the water. We continued staring at the waves until I sighed. "We should get going before everything starts getting hectic." I said, beginning to walk away. When I didn't feel her chilled presence I looked over my shoulder to see her still staring at the ocean. "(Y/N) let's go." I said. She snapped out of her trance floating over to me. "Sorry." She apologized, lazy smile returning. "So anyways what were we talking about?" She asked. "How should I know?" I questioned, slightly annoyed.
~Time Skip~
By the time we got back to my apartment (Y/N) was winning about sleeping. "Can you stop wining!? God!" I shouted, finally snapping. "Go take your d*mn nap already!" I said. She smiled. "Thank you!" She purred walking off to the couch. "On one condition." I added quickly. She groaned. "What is it?" She asked. "I want you to teach me how to cook." I stated firmly. She flinched slightly. "Why?" She asked. "Because I hate feeling useless." I said. "Whoever said you were useless?" She questioned, turning back around to face me. "No one. I just want to learn. You can't be around all the time now can you?" I questioned. "After all you're a lazy a*s." I grumbled. She sighed slightly, lazy smile still present. "Very well." She said, snapping her fingers. I was changed out of my uniform and into the casual clothes she had given me a few days ago. "You don't want to wear something you might mind getting dirty." She said, removing her coat and setting it on the back of a chair. She clapped her hands together, making sure my attention was on her. "Alright, so what do you want to learn first? Baking? Cooking? Basic kitchen safety? There are lots of bases to cover." She said. I titled my head to the side, confused. "Okay then. Let's start with something simple. Baking cookies. Shouldn't be that hard." She said. She snapped her fingers and the ingredients were on the counter as well as the tools needed. "For cookies you don't need much. Just make sure you don't burn yourself. Baking is easier than cooking because baking sweets requires less memorization than cooking. Cooking different dishes is very complicated, and no one can remember all recipes at a glance. It's why most have cook books." She explained. "Most baking recipes typically involve eggs, water, your brownie, cookie, or cake mix, and vegetable oil." She continued. "All you need to do is decide what flavor. I decided on chocolate. Hope you don't mind." She said. "No complains here." I said with a shrug. After that she continued lecturing me on basic things that I needed to understand as well as things to avoid in order to not burn anything. I'd say I was doing well. She sighed finally putting the cookie sheet into the oven. "Okay. Good job for your first try. You learn fast." She said. "How long?" I questioned, pulling up a timer on my phone. "Give it half an hour." She said. "Alright then." I said, nodding. I set the timer and left it on the counter. "Now what?" I questioned. She set the bowl we used for the batter in my arms. "You can have that if you want it. I'm taking a nap. Wake me when the timer goes off." She said teleporting on the couch and falling asleep, snoring. I chuckled a little bit. I used my finger to scrap some batter off the sides of the bowl and licked it, humming in satisfaction. "Chocolate." I mumbled, feeling content. I set the bowl in the sink along with some of the other tools used before sitting down at the dining room table, feeling a little tired.
I must have passed out because I shot awake to the sound of the timer going off. I slammed my hand on the table shooting up quickly and knocking my chair over. "I'M AWAKE!" I shouted. "ACK!" *Thud* I looked over to see (Y/N) laying face first on the ground, having rolled of the couch in shock. "Oops. Guess I dozed off." I said. (Y/N) made a noise of annoyance before teleporting into the kitchen. I smelled something funny. "Hey does something smell funny to you?" I questioned. She just stared at me in shock. "What?" I questioned. She pointed to my right hand. "Umm...Kokichi....Manus ardet." She said. "What are you saying?" I questioned. What is that, Latin? Yeah that's Latin. Why is she speaking Latin? I thought. "Manus ardet! Your hand is on fire!" She shouted, pointing at my right hand. "Wait wha-WHY IS MY HAND ON FIRE!?" I shouted holding out my hand. My hand was engulfed in purple flames. "WHAT THE HELL!?" I shouted, panicking. "(Y/N) put it out!" I yelled. "Aqua!(water)" She shouted water shooting from her palm at my hand. The flames disappeared and I released a breath. "What the heck?" (Y/N) questioned. "THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO KNOW!!!" I shouted. My hand. Was on fire. My hand. Was on fire! WHY WAS MY HAND ON FIRE!? I thought in a panic. "Okay...let's calm down." She said, snapping her fingers, turning off the oven and poofing the cookies out. "Let's review. The timer goes off, you wake up, I wake up, I walk in here, and your hand is on fire. Without you noticing. Not only that, but the flames were purple." She said. "Im tam confuse...(I'm so confused)" She mumbled. "Why are you speaking Latin?" I questioned. "How do you know that its Latin?" She shot back. "I studied a little Latin when I was younger. I don't know much though. I can only recognize it when its being spoken. I can't speak it myself." I said. "Oh. Well to answer your question it's a thing with Grim Reapers. I can only cast spells with the use of Latin. Minus my flames, teleportation, and the whole making things appear thing. I also speak in Latin sometimes. It just happens occasionally." She explained. "Okay....WHY WAS MY HAND ON FIRE!?" I shouted. "Nescio!(I don't know)" She shouted, starting to pace. "What?" I questioned. "I don't know!" She repeated. The flipping back and forth between languages was starting to confuse me. She took a deep breath, calming down. "Okay. Let's just calm down. Did that ever happen before you met me?" She questioned, sitting down in the chair across the table. "No. Never." I said. She hummed a little. "I want you to hold out your right hand and repeat after me." She said. "Okay..." I said, holding out my hand, palm up. "Say ignis.(fire)" She said. "Ignis." I repeated. My hand burst into flames again. Panic shot through my mind. "Don't panic." She said. "Ignis subsisto.(fire stop)" She said. I repeated her words and the fire was extinguished. She hummed. "Alright." She said. I laid my head down, eyes drooping. "Tired?" She questioned. I nodded weakly. "I think I know the problem." She said. Well? I thought, not having the energy to speak. "Rest first. I'll explain once you get some sleep." She said. But- "Somnum.(sleep)" She said waving her hand. I passed out.
~Time Skip (sorry if it was translated incorrectly!)~
I woke up with a start. I looked around. I was in my room. "Good you're awake. I was worried about how long you'd be out for." (Y/N) said. She was sitting in a chair next to my bed giving me a small smile. "What...What was all that?" I questioned, memories coming back. "First drink this." She said handing me a cup. I looked at the dark purple liquid in the cup. "I don't trust this." I growled. I waved my hand over the cup, scent checking it. It smelled odd. Not bad, but not appealing either. "Trust me you'll feel better afterwards. It may taste bad and smell weird but it'll help you regain your energy." She said. I hissed a little in protest. She sighed. "Either drink the drink or I'll force you." She growled back, a rare annoyed expression crossing her face. "Alright, alright. Geez don't be scary." I said. I pinched my nose and downed the strange concoction. I set the cup on the nightstand as she handed me a bottle of Panta to chase it with. "Thanks." I said, drinking my favorite drink to get the awful taste out of my mouth. Once I was done I just sat there, trying to regain my thoughts. "Feeling better?" She questioned. "A little. I'm confused, but I'm not about to collapse." I said. "Well I've had a little to do some research, and I've learned a few things about the whole contract thing." She said. "Do you want the good news or the bad news first?" She questioned. I raised an eyebrow. "Good news." I said. "The good news I know whats happening to you and what that mark on your shoulder is." She said. "And the bad news?" I questioned. "You can use magic now." She said. "How is that bad?" I questioned. "Well one: You have no control over it. Two: You're suppose to be ducking human this isn't normal." She deadpanned. "Point taken." I said with a sigh. "How long was I out?" I questioned. "A day. The use of magic drains your energy." She explained. "Oh. So what's this mark on my shoulder?" I questioned, nodding to my right shoulder. "That's a mark that you gain when you make a contract with a reaper. It's what keeps me bonded to you and what keeps you bonded to me. I read that I should have one too. But since I just change clothes through magic I haven't found it." She explained. I nodded. "And as for the magic thing?" I questioned. "Result of exposure to Reaper Magic during the forming of the contract. It's been recorded to have happened before in the past, but not often." She said. A book fell in her lap, looking old and worn down. She opened it to a page and started skimming over the pages before flipping a few pages backwards. "Too far." She mumbled. She stopped on another page skimming through it. "Yeah, right here." She said pointing to a paragraph. "It says right here that after forming a contact some contractors started to gain magical powers after a few days. Typically the same powers as the reapers they were contracted too. This was incredibly rare though. And back then more humans were able to see death." She said. "A contract between a human and a Reaper hasn't been formed in centuries. We're the first bonded pair in a long time." She said. "Have you found out why I was able to see you when you weren't trying to be seen?" I questioned. "Nope." She said, closing the book. "Okay. So what do we do about this?" I questioned. "Luckily while you were passed out I was able to cast a few spells and found out you have magic much like mine. Your magic can also be triggered by emotions and feelings as well as uttering the words in the Latin language. But like me you can use a variety of different spells." She explained. "How is that lucky?" I questioned, sweat-dropping. "It means I can teach you how to control your magic." She said, winking at me. She pat my shoulder, giving me a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. I can handle this. I may be lazy, but I've been bored the past hundred years. This finally gives me something I can do." She said, eyes sparkling slightly. "I've got this." She stated firmly. I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "Hey if you think you can do it then I won't stop you." I said, shrugging slightly. Her smile grew. "Until then, you should get some rest. The drink I gave you should help but more sleep is the best thing for you right now." She said. I nodded. "Alright. If you think so." I said, laying back down and rolling back over. "Hey...If you've been alive for over a hundred years you've got to have heard some interesting stories. Tell me one." I said. "Oh? Anything in particular?" She questioned. I heard her snapping her fingers, not sure what she did I peeked over my shoulder to see now instead of normal chair she was in a swivel chair. I didn't question it. I rolled back over. "No. Not really. Just make sure it's interesting." I said. "Gotcha." She said. "Any specific reason you're asking me to do this?" She questioned. "I find it easier to sleep with some background noise. It keeps my mind off....other things." I said. "Alright." She said. "Scary story?" She questioned. "Oh hell no." I said. She chuckled. "I'm just messing with you, chill." She said. I sighed a little. "Ah...I think I know a good one." She said. "This one is about a girl who you'd never see without her headphones. She always seemed detached from the world, and you'd never see her without those headphones of her's on. One day a new kid came to her school. He was placed in her first period gym class. Now you wouldn't expect someone like her, a girl always in a hoodie wearing headphones to be athletic. And truth is, she wasn't. She was only good at one thing, Dodge Ball. And that's what they were playing in gym that day. Now she could only do one thing when it came to Dodge Ball. And that was dodging. She couldn't catch nor throw. But watching her dodge was like watching a master at work." (Y/N) started. Her voice lowered slightly as she continued telling her story. My eyes felt heavy as she continued. "Then finally the girl was the last one left standing on her team. The new boy turned to the boy next to him to see that the boy next to him was smirking. 'Oh boy. Didn't think you'd see this so soon. You're in for a treat new kid.' The boy standing next to him said. At first, the boy was confused, how would this girl be able to win the match? He thought. A girl behind him shook her head. 'Great. Mizuki is about to be a show off again. We're gonna be here for a while.' She said. The girl with the headphones, Mizuki, stepped forward, tapping her foot to a beat that only she could hear." (Y/N) continued. "A person on the opposite team lost their nerve, for those who are weak lose their sense of logic in the face of overwhelming power. They were dumb enough to break the tension. Throwing the ball right at her face. Quick as a snake she moved her head to the side, the ball narrowly missing her. And so the onslaught continued. And she dodged each ball with minimal effort. It was obvious that she wasn't even trying. She seemed to move with the beat of the song she was listening too. And eventually the opposite team ran out of balls to throw. She kicked the balls back to their side with a monotone expression. 'Why is she doing that?' The new boy questioned. 'Because she can't throw.' The boy next to him responded. 'She can out dodge anyone in this gym so long as she's listening to her music. But ask her to throw or catch and she'll lose her zone. When Mizuki is the last person on her team it turns into a waiting game.' He explained. 'Why don't the coaches call it?' The new boy questioned. 'Because it's the only thing Mizuki is good at during gym. And although her expression is monotone its the only game she enjoys. Hence why she's good at it.' The girl behind him chimed in." (Y/N)'s voice got more distant as I slipped into the realm of sleep.
Kokichi: I had no idea you were such a great story teller (Y/N). Where'd you hear that one before?
(Y/N): I...actually made that story. As a reaper I have to have something to do to keep myself entertained.
Kokichi: So you're an author?
(Y/N): Author is a strong word.
Kokichi: But either way you should tell me stories more often.
(Y/N): Maybe after you start getting the hang of your magic.
Kokichi: Now that's not fair!
(Y/N): Hey you have no reason to be upset. I'm the one who has to face my bosses.
Both: Next time Chapter 5: Learning Magic!
Kokichi: BOSSES!? WHY WASN'T I TOLD ABOUT THIS!
(Y/N): Will you relax. You're cute when you're panicky and everything but no need to freak out on me.
Kokichi: C-cute?
