My Koala

***Neko's POV***

"I'm so fucking proud of you. I just can't explain how much." My hands grip my husband's face. I pull my Koala to me, kissing him breathless in front of his whole graduating class.

"Thank you." Milo blushes while pulling away. I pull him in again to kiss him greedily. Fucking proud.

"Okay. Okay. We see how much you love him. Now move over." Amy Bennett playfully pushes me to the side. I grab Isla because I know that is the way to my Koala's heart. He will be right back by my side in no time.

I was wrong. Twenty minutes later, Isla is still pawing at my hair. The three year hold has a monstrous grip. My roots cry out for relief.

"Okay, Isla. Let go of Uncle Neko." Max carefully pries my strands from the little monkey.

Letting out a belting wail, Isla shows her distaste for the change of hands. She only calms down once my husband scoops her into his arms. Milo spins around. Isla's hair flails out in a skirt of silken threads. Her cries are replaced by giggles.

"Okay. We really have to go." I pull Milo towards the car, out of the auditorium.

"I know. God, I hope we are not late." My koala bounces on his toes. He attempts a sprint but, I pull him into my arms to walk like a human.

Turning, we wave to everyone.

"I can't believe we have to do this check-up today." Milo scoots into the truck. I nod my head, pushing his door closed. As soon as I get in the truck, Milo starts panicking.

"Calm down love. Nothing to stress over." I place my hand on his thigh, rubbing my fingers over his bouncing leg.

"I'm done with school. Now, we are getting a baby." Milo turns his head. That grin is breathtaking. Always, my Koala is a thief for my heartbeats.

"Last time I checked." I wink at my precious husband.

He has been so excited. I am too. We are adopting a little boy from social services. It was perfect. It is perfect. The child was placed after his mother gave him to the fire department. We were on the list for a while. It seemed like forever. Now, it feels like just yesterday we were trying to get the papers filled out.

"I can't wait to meet him. I want to hold him. I want to love him so damn hard." Milo continues babbling. Knowing that he needs to get it out, I nod while listening.

The drive to the house takes the usual length of time. We rush in, making sure that Cash is outside. He lays happily underneath the tree in the backyard.

This place is perfect. We bought a starter home. Moving a little closer to the restaurant, we are now settled successfully.

Nat and Max still live close by. The only difference is that Ky and Lux are across the street. They couldn't stand not being in the vicinity. Once Ky graduated, they had rented an apartment and moved in together. Now, they are engaged. The wedding is in a month. I'm so happy to be the best man, to Lux. Koala is standing beside Ky.

A knock on the door interrupts my trip down memory lane. Milo rushes passed me. A breath of hesitation follows as he skids to the front door. I can see the slight tremble of his hand as he reaches for the doorknob.

My hand splays across his lower back, comfortingly. I open the door to greet the social worker. Mr. Livingston stands with a reassuring smile. I give him a smile back before moving out of the way. He slips in passed both me and Milo. We know the drill. This is the last of three check-ins.

"It looks really good. You have cleared the entire list of requirements. Last part is his nursery. Can you please show me where your child will be occupying?" Mr. Livingston follows us to the back hallway. The baby's room is directly across from ours. A minute wouldn't pass that we wouldn't be able to get to him.

Opening the room, I reveal my Koala's project. Milo worked endlessly to make the room both perfect and versatile. The crib will transform into a bed years down the road. The bookshelf is methodically stocked with everything from nursery rhymes to bedtime stories.

Soft curtains guard the sun from filtering in on our new family member. A mobile turns softly over the bedding. The bumper is missing from the crib. The books said no that it was an asphyxiation hazard. Everything is up to all current standards. Both vehicles have a car seat.

We have prepared. Probably, we went overboard. I didn't care. Milo smiled all the way through these stressful procedures. Between court dates, meetings and check-ins we have grown even closer.

"I would recommend a security camera to go with the baby monitor. It is not required. From one Dad to another, it brings peace." Mr. Livingston hands us a copy of our paperwork. Milo smiles widely at me.

"It was installed two days ago." I show Mr. Livingston the set of monitors that we purchased. It is a bit over the top. I wanted it specifically to give my Koala peace of mind. Milo wasn't going to let that slide anyway.

"Well. I guess congratulations are in order. The child is actually ready for you two to come meet, sign papers. He can come home with you after you give him a name. He's three weeks old now. I told you it wouldn't take long." The social worker smiles. I grab our stuff, sending a text to Lux to walk over and let Cash in if we take too long. I update our group chat to let everyone know we our going to pick up the baby.

I hear my phone going off simultaneously with Milo's. We don't need to look to know what is being said. We have all been waiting for this. Grabbing the diaper bag, that is full of everything baby, we head out.

"Oh god. I can't believe this." Milo is in the car and buckled up without any hesitation. I hurry to keep him from getting anxious.

This drive isn't long. The social worker leads the way to his office. It takes an hour to sign everything, unofficially making Lucas Ethan Wallace our son. We have to wait thirty days for the official documentation. It's just red tape. The mother willingly signed her rights over, making our worlds complete with her sacrifice.

I hold Milo around the waist, waiting patiently for our son to be brought in. Wrapped in a blanket we sent last week, the bundle is carried in by an older lady. She gently kisses his head before passing our son to my Koala.

I brush Milo's tears away while he stands in my arms, excitedly rubbing every visible inch of our son's head. Milo turns to me to pass Luke my way. I shake my head. We have forever. This is my husband's moment.

"I'm so happy. So happy, Batman." Milo squeezes our sleeping child. It is only minutes before waves and congratulations are given. We buckle Luke into the car seat and head home.

Milo ignores me all the way home. I don't mind. His attention is stolen by the eight pound Evans who occupied the back seat. Milo is turned in his seat, staring lovingly at our son.

Luke immediately starts stirring when the truck stops. I make a note that our boy likes drives. That information could be pertinent in the future. I laugh while unbuckling the car seat. Securing the diaper bag on one shoulder, I get a solid grip on the carrier.

Milo stands beside me, protectively. I smile. We look around at the cars littering our driveway. We knew we would get a welcoming committee.

The door opens without our insistence. Lux smiles, peeking into the car seat. Milo pushes passed me, yet again. I chuckle. Poor Lucas is getting smothered in love tonight. Probably for his whole existence, he is going to be loved hard.

I unbuckle the straps, carefully removing the tiny human from the container. Milo claps his hands. He sits down waiting for our son. I take a few moments to breathe our baby in. I snuggle him on the short walk to fill my husband's awaiting arms. Milo practically gushes the moment our son returns to his arms.

Walking to the kitchen, I start the process of making a bottle. The agency had given us his feeding schedule, along with other helpful things about our new son. I shake the formula before testing the temperature on my arm.

Satisfied in my first bottle making experience, I take the bottle to Milo. To my amusement, Milo shakes his head, passing the baby back to me. He already explained he wanted to observe the first few feedings. I agreed. It's not a huge deal.

Rocking gently in the glider rocker, I feed Luke. His tiny lips suction the bottle greedily. Little gulps are followed by happy sighs. Luke makes the sweetest noises. I'm already in love.

After the first ounce, I give the boy a good back rub. He blesses me with a smelly burp that reeks of iron. It's fucking gross if I'm being honest. I stifle the gag.

After the baby is fed, greetings begin. That's the last I will hold our precious little one until later. Too many hands are waiting.

Isla squeals delightfully, putting her head all up in Luke's face. Max tries to reign her in. He fails. Isla ends up on the couch, my sons legs are in her lap. Now Isla seems satisfied, for now.

"What did you name him?" Mille holds both children in his lap. I look to Milo. He named our son. I didn't mind.

"Lucas Ethan Evans." Milo smiles at Mr. Luke, our son's namesake.

"Well, fuck boys." Mr. Luke wipes a tear. I know the feeling. It's special to be chosen. Milo chooses me everyday. My Koala has a special heart.

"Great. Now we can't give dad the honor." Lux fakes a pout. I guffaw. He already knew this. We asked permission before we stole the honor.

"Yes you can." Mr. Luke corrects his oldest son.

"We are not naming our son Benson." Ky gives an exaggerated shutter. I agree here. That name is horrendous.

"Bentley is close enough." Mr. Luke throws a smirk with his words. He has them right where he wants them.

"Perfectly acceptable." Lux concedes with grace. It's a good name. It's cool too.

"I'm honored and privileged to have you boys fighting over me." Mr. Luke takes his inherited grandson into his arms. The look on his face tells me we made the right choice.

"A small token of our appreciation for everything you have done to make our lives better." Milo wraps his arms around our stolen dad. Mr. Luke has been more of a father than Steve ever was. That's a given.

"I really am blessed. This little guy is gonna be spoiled." Mr. Luke lavishes our son in love. I know he will be. He has the best family around.

Koala pushes me into a seat. His arms wrap around my neck. I smile while holding him to me. Milo tucks himself in. His lips graze my flesh. I smile wider.

My baby always loves my touch. I love his touch. It's our thing. We cling to one another. Always have. Always will. That is a given too.

"I have been waiting for this day for so long." Natalie bounces over to me. She hands my husband a small box. Milo sits up to accept the gift.

"What's this?" Milo looks suspiciously at Natalie.

Natalie shakes her head. Her angelic curls bounce softly at her shoulders. Nat waves her hand as if to tell my husband to open the small present.

My eyes narrow before a laugh comes from my lips. It's funny. It's too fucking funny.

Milo giggles, attempting to hide the contents of the box from the whole room. By the sound of laughter, everyone already knows what is in it.

"Natalie!" Milo groans out our best girl friend's name.

"What?" Innocently, Natalie giggles.

"You are so ridiculous." Milo throws his hands in the air. The box exposes the present to everyone. I laugh harder. Our family will always be like this. That also is a given.

"I always wondered how you two were going to make it with a child. Now, I can see firsthand." Natalie has no shame. None. At. All. It's endearing.

"Nat you can't spy on us." Milo looks absolutely mortified. I thinks it's hilarious. The small camera is definitely intrusive. We know immediately that she is referring to our inability to keep our hands off of each other.

That's not changing. Luke will grow up in a house where love shines brightly. Intimacy is a part of that. We just can't fuck under watchful eyes. At least not where he can see anyways. We already discussed the minor detail.

"It's okay. I already tapped into the new security camera. By the way, nice one last night. Tell me how you bent that way." Natalie smirks at Milo. I blush for him.

Having him next to the couch last night was definitely sexy. That boy is flexible. That's all I'm saying.

"Batman." Milo shrinks into me. His body vibrates through me. Mine is unashamedly amused.

"I only watched for a little while." Natalie adds fuel to the fire.

"She's lying. I got the shit fucked out of me." Max grins like a Cheshire Cat.

"Guys." Mile throws his hands over his face. Newlyweds often are more vocal with their exploits, Max and Natalie are extremely vocal with theirs.

We all burst into laughter at the two embarrassed men in the room. It goes on like that for awhile. I look around and realize, once again, how blessed we are. I have the perfect family. They may not be blood, but they are ours all the same.
