Chapter 3 Markings
"Hey, Buki? Is it ok if you sit with me and some of my friends during lunch," asked Izuku.
"Of course!" They all walk together to Lunchrush's cafeteria and get their trays.
"Mr. Aizawa's quirk apprehension test was grueling," Uraraka said stretching out her back. The girl with short, brown hair and pink cheeks looked completely exhausted and tired. She sat down and started eating still keeping a cheerful disposition.
"I agree. I broke my hand again," Izuku added rubbing his newly heal hand that the school nurse, Recovery Girl, healed. "I think you did great, Bukiyo!" The other two at the table nodded in agreement. The other male at the table had blue hair and rectangular glasses.
"Your quirk is truly remarkable," he stated, pushing up his glasses. "You managed to get to the finish line in the fastest record of time, beating everyone, even me."
"That's true, Iida~Kun! What is your quirk, Bukiyo? You beat everyone in everything," Uraraka questioned, now getting excited.
Bukiyo started to sweat nervously. How was she going to explain her power to everyone else? Would they even understand it? Would they judge her for it? What if they didn't want to be friends after she told them? All these thoughts were running through her head as Todoroki joined the group.
"Mind if I sit here," he asked in his always monotonous voice. He sat as everyone said he was welcome to join.
"Bukiyo here was just about to tell us about her quirk," Uraraka exclaimed.
"Bukiyo? So that's your name?" All she could do was nod at the red and white haired male sitting next to her. Fear was still running rampant in her mind. "I'm Shouto Todoroki. Nice to meet you."
"I-It's n-n-nice t-to meet y-you too" is all Bukiyo could stutter out.
Uraraka jumped in, "Come on! Tell us about your quirk!"
"Well, it's complicated. It's called Random. Really anything can happen at anytime. It usually starts when my allergies act up. I can't control it. You all have better quirks than me."
Izuku started writing in his Hero Analysis journal while the others quietly listened. Iida nodded in understanding.
"That's amazing, Buk!"
"Your quirk has always been much better than mine, Izu~Kun. You've had it ever since you were born after all."
"Deku never had a quirk until this year though", Uraraka piped up.
"Yes he has! His mom can attract small objects to her. And his dad can breath fire. Combine the two and he can attract hot things!"
"That explains why Kacchan still hangs around me.....", Izuku muttered.
"Izu, you just called Kacchan hot."
"DEKU SAID WHAT?!?!" Bakugo then stood up on the table, getting ready to fight.
"Kacchan, don't you dare hurt Izuku! You've done that enough when us three were little!"
The shy, blue and pink haired girl stood, trying to protect her friend. Bukiyo is fairly smaller than her friend, Bakugo; only standing at 4'11 and a half. And of course she was weaker than him. But no matter how the odds are stacked against her, she will do what she thinks is right.
"Look, Cotton Candy, this is between me and Deku. So get out of my way!!!"
"Hisss!!!"
"Did she just hiss at me?!" Everyone nodded.
"I do that when I'm angry. Achoo!" Suddenly, all of Bukiyo's clothes hit the floor. On top of that, she was no where to be seen.
"Where did she go?!" Uraraka questioned. She was worried about the new girl in school. All the girls in the cafeteria got up from their seats and started to gather the clothes. Luckily, a girl with earphone jacks on her ears had a duffle bag with her.
When the last piece of clothing was put into the bag, everyone saw a small pink and blue cat. It was Bukiyo. Her quirk had turned her into a cat when she sneezed.
"Looks like we found her", Jiro, the earphone girl, said while picking up the cat.
"So looks really cute, kero", a girl with a frog quirk chimed.
A pink skinned girl then suggested, "Maybe we should take her to Recovery Girl." All the girls agreed and headed to the school nurse's office.
Once they got there, the nurse in question was utterly perplexed. "Well, I'm no veterinarian or an expert on quirks, but I believe that she will turn back to normal in a few hours or so. However, she cannot stay here because animals, even if they were humans, are not permitted on school grounds. And I don't quite think her family will be able to take care of her while she is a cat. Do you children have any friends that will be able to do so?"
All the girls looked at one another thinking of who they could trust. Then, in unison each of them shouted, "TODOROKI!!!"
"And before you leave, would any of you like some gummy bears?"
~Time skip because I'm lazy~
"So you all want me to take care of our classmate, who is now a cat, until she changes back?", Todoroki inquired.
"Yeah. That's basically the long and short of it. Todoroki, out of everyone in our class, you know the most about cats! And she seems to like you already!", Uraraka explained to the dual colored haired male. And as if on que, Bukiyo was cat snuggling Todoroki. He lightly blushed, something no one sees of him.
"Alright. I will do it. Can you give me her clothes?" Jiro handed the duffle bag to him and after the school day he walked his way home with the pink and blue cat in his arms.
Todoroki opened to front door to his Japanese-styled house. He immediately saw his older sister cooking and his older brother sitting on the couch, reading a book.
"Fuyumi, I'm home", he called out to his sister. The female turned to give her little brother a welcoming smile, but had a horrified look on her face once she saw was in his arms.
"Shouto? Is that a cat?"
"No. This is actually my classmate who's quirk when haywire and turned her into a cat."
"Ok. You know Dad hates cats."
"I am aware."
"Luckily, he won't be home for about two weeks. So that gives you enough time to figure out what to do with her and how to change her back."
"Shouto, this is risky, even for your defiance of Dad", the older male in the room said.
"He is a scumbag that treats people like garbage and only wants to be #1 Hero. I will take my chances with him, Natsuo. Fuyumi, may I borrow some of your clothes?"
"Why?"
"So my classmate can have clothes to change into if she turns back into a person during the night."
"Sure, I guess."
"Thank you."
Todoroki went upstairs to Fuyumi's room to get some pjs for Bukiyo and then went to his room. He gently put her on his bed and notices patches of fur on her forelegs were missing. He also noticed a small marking on her left shoulder. He couldn't quite make it out, but it seemed to be a snowflake on fire.
"She must have a soulmate. It seems we have at least one thing in common", he thought to himself. He went to his bathroom to change out of his school uniform into something more casual. As he was doing so, the hair he had over his scar shifted ever so slightly to reveal a marking of a treasure chest with a flower growing out of it. He sighed wondering when he would meet his soulmate, or if he ever would.
The nature of soulmates is very complicated. There are multiple types of signs to tell if you have a soulmate and who they are. It just so happened that Todoroki got the most rare and most vague way of telling he had a soulmate.
Five years or so before you meet your soulmate, a mark will appear on a random part of your body, and be in the shape of your soulmate's quirk or personality if they don't have one. Once the two of you meet, the mark won't just go away. No. Instead, to make it harder and more vague for everyone with this soulmate indication, the two of you have to look each other in the eyes for the first time. Then, and only then, both of you will feel like your brains are exploding and both of you will faint. The marking will fade away soon after.
Todoroki had read news articles where people have died due to the pain of the headache after seeing their soulmate for the first time. He hated his life, but he didn't want to die. He wasn't ready for what the pain would feel like if he ever found his soulmate.
"At least it will be better than what Father does to me."
He returned to his room seeing Bukiyo still sitting on his bed.
"God, what will happen to her? She seems too fragile for immense pain like that."
He sat on his bed, petting Bukiyo, and contemplating the markings they both had.
