08 | Knock Knock

The robot had a large red robotic eye with heavily applied black eyeliner around it. His hair was swept to the right covering his right eye which was probably more gruesome than his left one. His jaw looked like the bottom of a bear trap, sharp metal teeth gleaming in the light. He had a long neck that had wires sticking out and a red panel on his chest with several strange dials that I didn't understand. He had a thin waist that was made of glass holding a vibrant and blood colored floating heart inside, the glass stained with blood splatters. He was holding a large chainsaw that had blood dripping off the blade and onto his bright red pointed boots, the toes so sharp they could slit someone's throat.

"Oh yeees!" He cried, his gleaming red eye settling on my figure. "I've gone on too long without the taste of human blood!" He licked his razor sharp teeth with a long bloody tongue, causing me to flinch in fear. "M-Mettaton! I f-forbid it!" Alphys screeched, standing up with a determined look on her face. The robot known as Mettaton craned his neck and cocked his head at Alphys, a grin on his face. "Why not darling?" Alphys cowered beneath his gaze but didn't give up. "S-She's our s-s-savior!"

Mettaton stared at her for a few seconds before he burst out laughing, his robotic cackles filling the air. "Alphys, darling, we're never going to be saved! It's been decades!" He screeched, Alphys flinching at his words. "It's not true! I will save everyone!" I yelled, not letting this robot give doubt to Alphys and risk losing her again. Mettaton turned to me and chuckled, raising his chainsaw.

"Oh darling, such determination. It'll sustain me for years."

He sprung towards me, the chainsaw whirring to life and swinging towards me. I yelped and dove back, narrowly avoiding the moving blade. A scream of annoyance pierced the air as the sound of the chainsaw hitting the floor reverberated through the lab. "You stupid skeleton! You should be killing her! Have you got no brains!" Mettaton screamed, thrashing around in the blue aura that surround him.

Blue aura.

My eyes flashed over to Sans who's left eye was blazing blue, a scowl on his face. "news flash toaster," he raised his arm and threw Mettaton up into the ceiling before making him clang back to the ground. "skeletons don't exactly have brains."

Alphys hurriedly ran over to Mettaton and opened his back panel while he was still on the ground held by Sans' magic. A few buttons later, Mettaton was turned off and lay there like an empty shell. "D-Don't worry about him, I'll r-redo his coding s-so that h-he'll be like he u-used to be." She stammered, a reassuring smile on her face.

Sans released Mettaton from his magic and turned to me. "you okay?" I nodded and got up, brushing myself off. "You've saved me too many times, I owe you." Sans chuckled and walked over to me. "freeing us all will be more than enough payback." I smiled back then turned to Alphys who was busing taking Mettaton apart to rebuild him. "Well, we better head on and save more monsters." Sans nodded and turned to the exit. "let's go then."

Sans and I were walking through Waterfall after just finishing my speech to save all the monsters in Hotland. They had gone back to how they acted before, being kind to one another and even flirting. Especially those two guards. I shipped them so hard.

Waterfall was such a beautiful place; the luminescent blue flowers repeating whatever I told them and the rushing waterfalls glowing a bright blue color. Sans told me that Waterfall had never really changed, it's beauty always staying the same even after monsters turned evil. I liked that it hadn't been tainted, showing that some good things stayed in the Underground no matter what happened.

I was hopping from lily pad to lily pad when I saw her, the gleaming and blood splattered armor lighting up from the glowing water. Her helmet was off and I could see a crown of bones on her greasy red hair that was pulled into a ponytail. Her face was a turquoise blue and her fangs were yellow with red at the end. One of her eyes were missing and were covered up with a dirty bandage, blood dripping from her empty eye socket. She held a glowing blue spear in one hand and a human head in her other.

And she was staring right at me.

Sans was a few meters away, completely oblivious to our stare down. He was too obsessed over a conversation that an Echo Flower was telling him.

My E/C eyes were wide as they stared back at the yellow ones that burned with loathing. I didn't like this one bit.

I opened my mouth to call to Sans but it was short-lived as a choked sob escaped my lips. I looked down, my eyes wide, and stared at the glowing blue spear that was sticking out of my stomach. Blood dribbled out of my mouth and my knees buckled, my body slumping forward as pain spread throughout my body, tears starting to fall down my face.

"KID!" Sans screamed, rushing over to my side. He kept yelling things to me about staying awake and not giving up but I was in too much pain to focus on his words. Flashes of blue erupted from out of my line of sight and soon screams and shrieks followed. I managed to turn my head a bit to see the blue fish lady pinned against the wall by Sans' magic with bones sticking out of the wall around her body, not piercing her skin. I guess Sans didn't want to kill her.

Speaking of Sans, he was crouched down next to me with my head laying in his lap, blue tears running down his cheekbones. "kid . . . don't give up . . . stay determined . . ." He whispered, taking off his jacket and desperately trying to tie it around my waist to stop the blood from coming out. The spear was still in my stomach which should have freaked me out but I was strangely calm instead. In fact, the only emotion I felt was fascination as I watched the spear dissolve into wisps of blue light. It looked so pretty . . .

"y/n! stay awake!" Sans shouted, forcing me to open my eyes that I hadn't realized had closed. I coughed, blood splattering out of my mouth. "oh god," Sans whispered, his body starting to shake in fear. "please don't give up . . . you're going to be okay . . . you just need to--" "Sans." I interrupted, my voice quiet.

"yeah?" He leaned forwards to hear me better. "Use my soul . . . to break the barrier." I managed to get out, tears flowing down my cheeks. "kid, you don't have enough--" "I lied. I have . . . a lot of determination." I confessed, my figure starting to tremble from failing parts of my body. There goes my legs . . .

"what?" Sans croaked, his hand coming up and hovering over my chest, a second later a F/C heart coming out of my body.

It was beautiful, the soft glow from the F/C heart creating shadows on my face. There was a crack down the center and small chips were falling to the ground around me, their light starting to die out. "kid . . . it's not just that . . ." Sans said, holding my soul in his hands. "i don't want you to die because--" "I know." I cut him off, watching as my soul gave a little flutter in his hands.

If I was going to die, I wanted to hear one last thing from Sans that Papyrus had told me he used to do all the time.

"Sans, can you . . . tell me a pun?" I asked, hope filling my teary eyes. My breathing was becoming uneven and harder to manage, the lower half of my body already going unresponsive. Soon, I'd be dead.

"kid, i . . ." He choked on his words then took a deep breath. "knock knock."

I smiled. "Who's there?" Glowing blue tears dropped onto my cheeks joining my salty ones. "i'm not red." He whispered, wrapped his arms around me and pulling me closer. It hurt, but I didn't complain. "I'm not red who?" My eyes were starting to close and it took all my strength not to let them. I would stay awake a little longer, for Sans.

His face twisted into internal agony as his eye sockets closed with even more tears flowing out. "i'm not ready to let you go." He choked out, small sobs coming after. I reached up with a weak hand and cupped his cheek, causing his eye sockets to open and look at me.

I smiled at him and put my other hand in his that was holding my soul. "Save the Underground . . . for me. Do it for . . . everyone," I said, feeling some of my last breaths come out. "And please . . . don't forget about me."

I finally gave in and closed my eyes, smiling slightly as I felt my very last breath escape my lips, my body going limp and my heart slowly coming to a stop.

Sans' eye sockets widened and a pained scream escaped his mouth, the Echo Flowers repeating his cry throughout Waterfall for everyone in the Underground to hear.

Their savior was dead.
