Once upon a time, there was a king named Alfor who ruled a large and mighty kingdom. He was blessed with his daughter Princess Allura, but he was sad. For he was growing old and Allura had no one to play with. Then happily, a son was born. A prince and he was given the name Lance. Five year old Allura looks at her brother and says "He's the best brother I could ever ask for, Father" Alfor smiles and says "I'm glad you like him, Allura" Allura beams "Like him? I love him" Allura holds baby Lance and says "I'm going to be the best big sister ever, Lance. I promise" Baby Lance babbles happily

Kings and queens came from all around to offer their gifts to the child. Among them was the widow Krolia, her older son Prince Shiro and her young son Prince Keith. Queen Krolia and her two sons arrive as Alfor smiles and says "Dear Krolia, as lovely as ever" Krolia smiles and says "Thank you for welcoming us, dear Alfor and to you, young princess" five year old Shiro walks towards Allura, bows to her and says "Hello Princess Allura, I'm very pleased to meet you" Allura curtsies and says "Pleased to meet you, Prince Shiro"

Alfor asks "And who are you?" three year old Keith replies "I'm Keith" Krolia agrees "He brings a gift for your son, Lance" Krolia pats her son's back and says "Go on, Keith dear, go on" Keith walks towards the cradle, looks at baby Lance and says "Hi Lance, my name is Keith" Baby Lance babbles happily as Keith smiles and says "I got you something" Keith shows Baby Lance a golden heart necklace with a swan imprinted in the center of the heart as Baby Lance plays with it and Keith lets go of the necklace and smiles

It was then that Allura and Shiro happened upon the same idea. Keith and Lance would be brought together each summer in hopes that they would fall in love and join their kingdoms forever. Allura notices her baby brother getting along with Keith as she asks "Shiro, are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Shiro notices Keith playing with Baby Lance and replies "Yes Allura, I am" Allura smiles and says "We should make your brother marry my brother" Shiro smiles and says "And once they come of age, they'll get married and our kingdoms will rule together" before Keith and Lance were born, Alfor and Krolia had Allura and Shiro meet each summer in hopes that they too would fall in love and hearing their children's idea about Keith and Lance falling in love made them even more happier than before

But unknown to all was another plan that of the evil enchanter Zarkon and his witch wife Haggar. Lance's birth was of little concern to them for they were preparing to take Alfor's kingdom by means of the Forbidden Arts. On the eve of their assault, Alfor attacked, Zarkon's powers were plunged into darkness and he was burnt at the stake for treason but despite calls for Haggar's death, the pregnant witch was only banished as she yells "We're not finished with you yet, Alfor. When my child is born, it will inherit all my powers and when it comes of age, everything you own, everything you love will belong to my child" and she disappears in a puff of smoke. Many feared King Alfor too kind but in time, the threat was forgotten and all hopes turned to that not too distant summer when Keith and Lance would meet
