Sleepwalking

Hunk P.o.v:

Lance had always done it. It was just a thing that happened. Ever since he was a kid.

I found out when we'd had our first sleepover and awoke to small mutters and soft footsteps.

But I thought it had stopped when Lance turned sixteen.

Lance and I left our homes to go to the garrison at seventeen. Something we had dreamed about doing for years.

Nobody was aware of the cuban boy that had wandered the corridors after lights out, eyes closed and trying to find something unknown to anyone else.

Nobody questioned why Lance was nowhere to be seen in the morning. (he was supposedly an early riser, yet always late for breakfast.)

Nobody. Not even me.

And then the craziness that is Voltron happened. We, along with Pidge, found the living legend that is Takashi Shirogane, reunited with an old aquaintance and together we discovered the blue lion.

Fast forward a few months and I could tell the team were starting to get frustrated.

Lance is failing to turn up for morning drills.

"I don't understand. Lance has always been the first to get up and now he can't even wake up for morning drill? It doesn't make sense." Pidge grumbled as they ate their breakfast.

We had abandoned our training for the fourth time that week. A routine was starting to emerge.

The alarm would blare, four out of five paladins would rush to get to the training deck (still pulling random parts of our suit on as we went,) we would get there and surprise surprise... no Lance to be seen. The others would trudge to breakfast grumpy and still half asleep whilst I went to retrieve the sleeping blue paladin.

"He's probably just going through a rough patch." Shiro spoke up when he heard Pidge's comment.

Then the door opened, revealing a smiling Lance.

"Good morning everyone." He said as per usual, taking his seat next to the red paladin.

We all smiled and said good morning back, but Keith remained silent.

Lance turned to him upon noticing this.

"No good morning from my favourite red paladin?" Lance smirked and Keith shot him a glare.

I felt myself freeze, out of all of us, Keith had always been the most annoyed by Lance's lack of appearance in the mornings. He had to be told frequently not to mention anything.

"Why would I wish you good morning when me and the others are missing out on training just because you can't be bothered to get your pathetic ass out of bed?" Keith spat, his glare turning harsher with every word he spoke.

Lance's expression faltered and his eyes widened as the smile fell from his face.

"Keith that was uncalled fo-" Shiro began, only to be cut off by Keith.

"No! I've had enough of this shit. We could be attacked by the Galra at any minute and we've not trained for four days just because he's tired?" Keith's voice was steadily getting louder, his pent up frustration rising to the surface. He turned to Lance again, ignoring the shocked look on his face before continuing.

"So you're tired. So you're 'probably going through a rough patch.' Well newsflash your highness, we're all tired too. Tired of your bullshit." Keith was standing now and when he had finished his rant he promptly turned on his heel and stomped out of the room, leaving his breakfast unfinished.

The entire room sat in silence for a few seconds... Allura, Coran and the other two paladins as well as myself watched in dismay as the tears formed in Lance's eyes.

"Lance, he's just-" I began, resting a hand on Lance's shoulder, but Lance just shrugged me off.

"No, he's right..." the blue paladin said with a sad smile.

He rose from the table and ran from the room, but not before whispering a small 'I'm sorry.'

"I can't believe him!" I said, my voice quiet but radiating anger.

Pidge looked to Shiro nervously, not used to such a tone coming from me.

"I know they're rivals and everything but fucking hell, he needs to cut Lance some slack. He has no idea what shit he goes through every night." I continued, my fingers curling into a fist around my spoon.

Shiro's eyes widened, I only ever swear when I'm really angry, and this is the first time its happened since we've been on this ship.

"Shit, I just wish Keith would leave him be instead of getting on his fucking case all the time." I shouted before I rose from my seat and left the room to try and calm myself down.

Keith P.o.v:

I had been in my room for most of the day, letting my anger out on the wall beside my bed, multiple chips in the plaster from the amount of times I'd thrown my knife at it.

"God I'm such a fucking idiot!" I shouted, throwing it again and watching it wedge into the wall with a 'twang.'

"Cover up your feelings for him by shouting at him. Nice one Kogane. Good job." I muttered to myself before going to retrieve it.

I sighed and walked over to my bed, sitting down. I looked at my clock and saw it was pretty late before my stomach growled loudly at me, I haven't eaten since breakfast.

I put my knife under my pillow and got up. I opened my door and made my way quietly to the kitchen in search of a late night snack, knowing I wouldn't be getting to sleep anytime soon anyway.

I paused as I passed Lance's door. Light seeped out from the cracks, meaning he was still awake. I hesitated and then ever so slowly made my way over and knocked.

"Lance?"

No answer.

I cracked the door open slightly and peeked in, my blood running cold as soon as I did.

The wardrobe had been ripped off the wall and was laying in pieces on the floor along with other miscellaneous furniture, clothes were shredded and thrown in random places, glass littered the ground everywhere and the bedsheets had been torn and thrown across the room.

I opened the door fully and walked in, my mouth agape with sudden shock.

"Lance!?" I called out, walking to the bathroom to see it just as trashed. However Lance was nowhere in sight.

I raked a hand through my hair, worry sparking up inside my stomach.

I walked out of the room and shut the door before making my way down the corridor again, this time in search of Lance.

It took me twenty minutes before I finally found him, in a room I hadn't been to before. It was far away from where we spent most of our time, on the other side of the castle.

"Lance..." I whispered to myself in relief as the boy stood completely still in the middle of the dark room. I walked over cautiously.

"Lance?" I said softly, so as not to startle him. "Lance, are you okay?"

He stepped forwards suddenly, almost walking straight into me. It was then that I noticed that his eyes weren't open.

Lance mumbled something that I didn't hear and I stepped closer, putting my hands on his shoulders.

"Lance?"

"P-pathe-tic." He mumbled again, his eyebrows creasing as if he were burdened. I felt my eyes widen as I realised what's happening.

He's not. He can't be. He's... sleepwalking?

I shook my head and tried to calm down. I can't believe this.

Is this why he's struggling to get up? Have I been giving him shit for something he seriously can't help?

I tightened my grip on his shoulders and shook him slightly.

"Lance, wake up." I said, and I could hear the sudden fear laced in my voice.

Lance groaned and stepped forwards again, making me push on his shoulders to stop him from moving.

"Lance, it's Keith. Wake up."

"K-Keith. N-no Keith. I d-didn't m-mean to." He stuttered suddenly, his voice sounded terrified and I watched in horror as a tear crept out from under his eyelid and slid down his cheek slowly.

It finally dawned on me. He's having a nightmare... about me...

"Lance, please wake up... please." I said, desperately now as I shook his shoulders a little more.

He gasped suddenly as his eyes flew open. His gaze fell on me and he squealed before backing himself into the corner.

"Lance?"

"P-please, don't hurt m-me. I won't be late. I'll do things right. I-I'm sorry." He stuttered out, the tears cascading down his face now.

"Hey, I'm not going to hurt you. Lance hey, calm down." I said softly, slowly walking towards him with my hands up in surrender.

His eyes followed me as I got closer.

"C-can I touch you?" I asked, worry evident in my voice.

He nodded hesitantly and stood up a little more.

I went slowly, moving in front of him before wrapping my arms around him.

"I'm not going to hurt you Lance. I promise." I said as his arms came up to return the hug. I rested my chin on his shoulder and finally, I let the tears come.

I reached a hand up and played with Lance's hair as I cried silently, not letting a single sob escape.

I did this? I scared him this much? My heart swelled as I thought about hurting this precious boy, this boy that I love so much.

"I'm so s-sorry Lance." I said softly, my voice cracking at the end.

He stiffened and put his hands on my shoulders to pull me away before looking at my face.

"W-why are you crying?" He asked, running a thumb under my eyes to wipe away the tears, though they were replaced with more only a second later.

"Because I've hurt someone I'm in love with to the point where they're scared of me." I managed to choke out.

Lance looked confused for a second before my words fully sunk in.

"Wait... are you talking about me?" He asked in surprise, the stutter gone from his voice.

I nodded slowly and lowered my head.

"You... you're in love with me?"

I nodded again and looked up at him through my wet lashes.

He swallowed and bit his lip before using his thumb to lift my chin up, so that I was looking straight at him.

"I'm not scared of you Keith... I just... I thought you hated me."

I shook my head in disagreement.

"I could never hate you. I-I just have trouble expressing myself properly... I acted like that to cover up my feelings for you because... because..." I trailed off and looked to the side.

"Because...?"

"Because you deserve better... and I was scared that you'd hate me if I told you that I love you..." I whispered, looking at him again.

Lance processed this for a few seconds before shaking his head slowly.

"Oh Keith, you idiot." He whispered. He lifted my chin with his thumb again and stepped closer before leaning down and pausing when our lips were barely touching.

I felt my heart stop for a moment in shock before it began beating rapidly inside my chest.

"I love you too..." Lance whispered, and then he closed the small distance between us.

He rested his hands on my waist as his lips moved against mine, and almost automatically my arms made their way around his neck as I let my eyes close and I melted into the kiss. He sighed contentedly against my lips and I smiled, tilting my head to deepen it.

I felt Lance's tongue glide across my bottom lip and I opened my mouth to let him in. Our tongues met and clashed together, the hands on my waist pulled me closer, eliminating any space between our bodies.

We stood there in that dark room on the far side of the castle, our lips moving in sync, and it took five minutes for us to finally break apart for air.

I rested my forehead against his and smiled.

"I'm sorry for giving you shit for being late. This whole sleepwalking thing... how long has it been going on?" I asked softly.

Lance paled and looked away.

"I...It started when I was about five, my parents took me to the doctors and they tried putting me on sleeping pills but it didn't work... I was able to manage it for a while when I was sixteen, but then it started up again at the garrison."

We had began walking back as Lance spoke, our hands intertwined and bodies close.

"How did you manage it when you were sixteen?" I asked, running my thumb across his.

"I uh... I stayed around my boyfriends house quite a lot. It seems I don't do it if I'm with other people."

Keith thought for a while and nodded, that made sense.

"I see... So when you left for the garrison and he wasn't there..." I trailed off and Lance nodded with a small smile.

"Did you guys... I mean, A-are you still..." I stumbled over my words, the question made me sound desperate.

"Yes, we broke up. Don't worry."

"Oh... I'm sorry."

"Don't be, we're still friends. We just agreed it would be silly to maintain a relationship with me going to the garrison so far away."

I nodded and then fell silent, the only thing to be heard was our footsteps echoing off the wall.

Soon enough we reached my room and Lance stopped, letting my hand go with a small, almost unoticable frown.

We said goodnight and Lance turned to walk to his own room, which I suddenly remembered, was trashed.

"Lance!" I said loud enough for him to hear, just as he was about to turn the corner. Lance looked over his shoulder and hummed, asking what I wanted.

"Stay with me tonight?" I called out nervously, playing with the hem of my shirt.

Lance seemed to think about it for a second before he walked back over.

"Stay with you?"

"Y-yeah... I mean, you said it helps when there's someone next to you and your bed is trashed anyways..." Lance looked confused as to how I knew about his room, but shrugged it off.

"Okay..." He said with a small, nervous smile.

I took his hand and opened the door to my room, leading him inside.

"Make yourself at home," I chuckled. "I just need to use the bathroom."

He nodded and I closed the door, seperating us. I inhaled a large amount of air and then breathed it out. I was planning to have a shower but that could wait until tomorrow, I undressed and slipped into the pyjamas I had left on the toilet seat before throwing my clothes in the laundry basket and picking my jacket up.

I opened the door to find a sleepy looking Lance sitting on the edge of my bed. I shook my head and hung my jacket up before making my way over to him.

"You look exhausted. Come here." I said softly, getting under the covers and then pulling his arm towards me.

He slipped off the jacket that was hanging loosely off his shoulders and folded it up, he put it on the ground next to the bed before diving under the covers.

I chuckled as he leaned over me with a smirk, one arm draped across my chest and the other supporting his weight.

"Wow. I finally got Keith Kogane into bed with me. Guess my charm is just that irresistible." He said softly, pressing his forehead against my own.

"It's not too late to kick you out y'know." I said with a matching smirk.

Lance pouted and grumbled something inaudible making me laugh. I leant up and kissed his pouting lips softly.

After a few seconds he broke the kiss and cuddled up to me, his head resting on my chest and our legs tangled together.

Soft snores found my ears as I played with his hair, I smiled and dropped my arm before letting my body relax.

"Night Lance. Sleep well."

•••

Thinking of doing a part two for this where the paladins go mental at Keith for being mean to Lance and Lance just walks into the room and kisses him. Thoughts?

Thank you for reading.
