Chapter 4

I woke up to Tommy killing some Zs and Murphy complaining about toilet paper to Addy. I leapt down from the truck bed and looked around. I was only out for a few minutes when Tommy yanked me back into the car. We pulled away after Murphy finished his business. We pulled up to a group of Zs and Tommy and I jumped out and climbed up the tree to the side. Some of the Zs were actually people. Surprise surprise! Tommy shot one of the Zs in the head but Garnett signaled to stop. We ended up losing the truck and I had to sit on the roof. I continually was slipping and sliding and scrambling to stay on the orange metal car. We moved slowly. VERY slowly. We pulled up on the robbers who were holding up a family. Turns out the family were the robbers. I just sat on the roof again and waited for us to stop. We stopped again. The family of robbers were being eaten on the ground. We HAVE to get off this road.

We ended up signaling someone called citizen z. I sat on the roof and tried to make sure Tommy didn't fall off. The group loaded back into the truck and headed to an army base. I was sniffing around the stairs when the man Garnett was talking to came down. Backed up as Doc came forward. Well I'm not needed here, might as well hunt for myself. I stalked into the woods and scented the air. It may be the apocalypse but there are plenty of mice and small prey around. Lucky for me. I crouched down as I heard a squeak from a mouse. Poking my head over the tall grass I saw another cat carrying the brown creature in its jaws. I needed that prey. I crouched down and as the cat neared I leapt out, pinning the sandy colored cat. "State your name and business!" I snarled and dug my claws into their shoulders.

They spat the mouse out and tried to squirm free. I held my grip and didn't let go. "I'm hunting, fleapelt. You'd think you have half of a brain, surviving in this world takes smarts. And the name is Dusty. Can I go now?"

"No, Dusty, you may not leave. Give me the mouse and anything else you've caught and I'll think about it." I growled menacingly. The tom sighed and tried to scramble away again.

"How do you expect me to get my prey for you if I can't move, mouse brain?" I lifted my paws and stepped back so he could get up. Dusty disappeared into the bushes and came back with a squirrel, three mice, and a large crow. I smirked. "Could I at least take a mouse?"

"Fine, fox breath, but I get all the rest." I picked up the load he dropped at my paws and turned around. Life isn't that easy though. He leapt at me from behind and dug his claws into my shoulders. I spun around, flinging him off. We fought in a whirl of teeth and claws, slashing and biting, clawing and ripping at flesh and fur. We split apart long enough to see the wounds each of us inflicted on the other. I left a long, deep slash in his flank and a few small scratches along his sides and on his face. I had a tear in my ear and a clump of fur missing from my shoulder. I snarled and lashed out again, claws meeting flesh. He fell to the ground, blood bubbling from his neck. I quickly grabbed the prey and raced back to the truck. I leapt onto the side and dropped the prey into the bed. All the others in the group were there, Doc covered in blood and grime. He was wiping it off while everyone laughed. I was very confused but purred along with their laughs. I went to my pile of food and Tommy sat next to me. He rubbed my head and I settled down with the three mice.

"Good hunting?" Tommy chuckled.

"Yes." I murmured, knowing he only heard a meow.
