Chicago

You are getting ready for the last game in the KHL. You knew this moment was coming ever since you joined Admiral Vladivostok. You are glad that you came early because you want to have time alone to think about the game. It will be an interesting game against Dynamo Moscow. You start thinking about how the talent scouts of the Chicago Blackhawks offered you a place in the team. Your thoughts are interrupted by your team's primary goaltender.

"Hello Dagger. You look like you are thinking about something," You are greeted by the newcomer.

"I'm just thinking about the fact that this is my last game in the KHL then I am going to a completely different place," You respond. You are glad that you have told him about the move. He gets work on getting all of his gear on. You have always wondered how the goalies are able to get their gear on quickly.

"Look on the bright side, you are heading to the second best league," He announces as you help him check the various straps.

"Sergei, you try being a twenty year old in a completely different country," You retort. It doesn't take long for the rest of the team to arrive. There is a lot of chatter about the game.

"So Dagger, what do you think about our chances of winning?" Your left wing asks.

"I think there is a strong chance that we might but we should still put up a fight," You reply. After ten tense minutes of prep the rest of the team is ready. You all head to the ice for the warm ups. At least no one has asked whether not not anyone is transferring to the NHL. Hopefully your bother doesn't show. You get to work on a defence drill. You try your best to weave through your defence. After twenty minutes of warming up you are getting ready to take the face off. The umpire drops the puck between you and the other centre. You get to work on getting the puck from him. You are able to skilfully snatch the puck from him.

"Jay, Danny I need your help," You call out as you hit the defensive wall.

"I'm open," Jay confirms. You pass the puck to him through the defenceman's skates. Jay soon passes it to Danny who then passes it back to you. You are about to take the shot but you can feel the feeling of being pulled over by one of the other team's players. You shoot anyway. You are surprised because the goal horn has sounded which means you have scored. Jay and Danny pull you up.

"Are you alright Chelsea?" One of your defence asks.

"Yeah I should be fine," You say as you get ready to take the next face off. This time you have the misfortune of being a little too slow. The other centre is able to snatch it off of you. You try your best to get the puck back but after a number of attempts you have decided to let the defence get it back. After a minute of trying they finally have the puck in their possession.

"Dagger, Danny, Jay make sure you're open," The defenceman calls out. You all get to work on fulfilling the request. You are able to get the puck from him in no time. Thankfully you are able to get it. It doesn't take long for you to get to the net. Instead of going for the goal you pass it to Jay who has a slightly better opportunity to score. After some creative stick handling Jay is able to pull the puck over Dynamo Moscow's goaltender's legs. The goal horn sounds. After a brutal ten minutes the period has come to an end. You are with your other teammates at the bench.

"Are you sure you are alright?" Sergei keeps asking.

"Yes I may have tripped over but I'm fine," You confirm as you bring your water bottle to your lips. This is the kind of help you are going to miss. It doesn't take long for the game to start up again. The good thing is you have the next period off. You take the seat next to your team's alternate goaltender. She looks like he is deep in thought about something.

"Sash what's bothering you?" You decide to ask to see if it's anything you can help with.

"I've been thinking about the NHL draft and if they are considering goalies this year," She responds.

"Maybe but I can't wrap my head around me having to score against you," You respond. Sasha gives you a look.

"What do you mean?" Sasha asks.

"I have been chosen by the Blackhawks and if you were chosen it would most likely be by a different team," You explain. You can see the slight look of jealousy in her eyes. Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the goal horn. Your alternate centre has just scored. After seventeen minutes of game play the game is tied which is going to make your job a lot harder. You soon get ready to take the face off. It doesn't take long for the umpire to drop the puck between the two off you. You find yourself glaring at the other centre as you snatch the puck from him.

"Misha, Max I need help," You call out as the defence swarms around you. You try your best to get the puck around the defence. Thankfully your best is good enough.

"Dagger I'm open," Misha calls out. You pass the puck to him. After some intense back and forth between the forwards you are ready to score. You decide to confuse the goaltender with some fancy stick handling. After ten seconds of stick handling you are able to pull the puck over the goaltender's leg. You soon get ready for the next face off. It is brutal. Despite the fact that you are trying your best the other centre comes out the most successful. You get to work on getting the puck back. This time you are able to pull it through his legs. Your success doesn't last long. You can feel the elbow of one of Moscow's defence.

"Careful," you mumble. You try to pass it to your fellow forwards but Moscow's defence is too quick again. It doesn't take long for one of Moscow's forwards to tie the game again. After ten minutes of static play you are getting ready for a buzzer beater. You get the feeling that this game may end up in over time but you are going to try your best to get around the goaltender. There is a loud crash as your stick makes contact with the puck. The goaltender tries to block it but it bounces off his helmet into the goal. A few seconds later the buzzer goes to signal the end of the game. At least the game didn't go into over time. It has been a week since the game and you are saying your last goodbyes to the team.

"Good luck Dagger," Sergei remarks as he pulls you into the typical Russian embrace.

"Thank you Sergei," You respond as you try to wriggle your way out.

"I would let go if I were you Sergei," Misha remarks. You release the mother of all sighs.

"I will see you all in the IIHF world championships," You remark as you head to the plane that will take you to Chicago. You are soon lost in your thoughts about your new team and how you are going to miss playing for Admiral Vladivostok. Thankfully it doesn't take long for you to board the plane. After fourteen hours of travel you have made it to Chicago. You are struggling to find the person who is supposed to pick you up.

"Chelsea," Someone calls out to you. You are surprised to see Alex DeBrincat catch up to you.

"That's me," You are a little flustered because you were expecting someone like Patrick Kane or Jonathan Toews.

"Can I take some of your stuff?" Alex offers. You pass him your hockey gear bag. The good thing is that Alex is happy to help. The thought makes you smile. It doesn't take you long to get to the car. Alex looks like he wants to make conversation but he is struggling to think of a topic that could keep it going. Despite the nap you had on the plane you are hit by the brick that is tiredness. He probably has some questions that you can answer later.

"Sorry for being boring Alex but I need another nap," You remark.

"Don't worry about it. I'll wake you up when we get to my place," Alex remarks. It doesn't take you long to fall asleep. After what feels like two hours of sleep Alex gently nudges you awake. You quickly rub the lingering tiredness out of your eyes. The only thing worse than the tiredness is the fact that you are hungry.

"Alex do you think I could get some take out or something for dinner?" You timidly ask as you leave the car.

"I'll do one better. I'll try to cook something," Alex responds as he grabs your stuff. You are now a little curious as to what he will make. You decide to let it be a surprise. You follow him to the room that will be yours.

"The food will be ready in fifteen minutes so if you want to freshen up a bit you can," Alex heads to the kitchen. You find yourself in the ensuite bathroom. You turn on the tap and splash some of the water in your face. It seems to have the desired effect of snapping you awake. You quickly get changed into your pyjamas . It doesn't take long for the smell of the food to hit your nose. You head to the source.

"Is it ready yet?" You ask as you sit down.

"Almost," He responds as he quickly plates up the food. He passes it to you.

"Thank you," You remark as you start to eat it. You are impressed by his attempt. It is definitely better than takeout. Alex still looks like he wants to ask you a question.

"You look like you have a question that you want to ask," You bring it to his attention.

"I was thinking about your nickname and what it could be," He responds.

"For some reason I had the nickname Dagger in the KHL," You reply.

"And I also want to carry it over to the NHL," You add because it is the only link you have to your KHL roots. After thirty minutes of getting to know Alex you are ready to go to bed.

"Goodnight Chelsea," Alex says as you get up.

"Goodnight Alex," You respond. You head back to your room where you collapse onto the bed. You feel like you are the luckiest hockey player in the world. You start to think about what the others would think of you. It doesn't matter so long as you don't make a fool of yourself in front of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. You feel bad for thinking like that but you had similar thoughts when you joined Admiral Vladivostok. You soon drift off to sleep.
