Catina and Fred turned their heads to the right to see Professor Umbridge with her hands on her hips and a smirk on her lips. The girl stepped away from Fred and looked down at her feet. Fred bit the inside of his cheek and his hands felt cold without Catina's hot cheeks in them.
"Out of bed? After hours? A boy and a girl, heaven knows what they have been up to..." Said Umbridge, her voice sickly and sweet as she moved a hand to twiddle her wand between her fingers.
"Look, it's not her fault, I was in the library and found her asleep. I was just walking her back to her common room to make sure she was okay," Fred told the Professor causing Catina too look at him as if he had three heads.
Umbridge snickered, "and what would a Weasley be doing in the library? At this time of night?"
"I was... uh... setting a prank up!"
"Of course, however could I have not known? Detention Mr Weasley, my office right now. As for you Miss Lennox, you can join him."
"What? Why?"
"Because, Mr Weasley, she was going to let you cover for her. Come along you two." Umbridge spun on her heels and clip-clopped along the corridors with the pair sluggishly following behind. Her head was held high and her pointy chin was sticking out further than ever.
"I'm sorry, kitten, I tried," whispered Fred.
"Don't apologise. You tried covering for me, thank you. I'm just getting what I deserve," replied Catina.
In Umbridge's office the pair was seated apart and given some parchment and a quill each. "A special quill that requires no ink", Umbridge had told them and so they started writing.
Fred's lines consisted of: I must not be out of bed after hours and must not lie for other students.
Catina's lines consisted of: I must not be out of bed after hours and must own up for my wrongdoings.
It wasn't even three lines in and Catina started to hiss from the tearing of the skin on the back of her right hand. Fred managed to conceal his pain by buying his tongue as he glanced over at the girl and his heart sunk. He didn't like the fact she was in pain when it was technically his fault. He should have let her go to bed when she wanted to. He shouldn't have made her slide down the banister and nearly fall to her death. And he definitely should have argued with Umbridge and made her believe him when he told her Catina was not at fault.
To Catina, Umbridge had to be a sadist! Her smile was too genuine as she observed the two seventh years experience the words on their parchment being carved into their skin and running with blood. She would sip her tea like she was watching a comedy show and she couldn't take her eyes from it and it was the funniest show on earth.
Anger boiled up in Cantina's veins and she burst like the skin on her hand. Standing up, the chair she was previously sat on screeched and fell to the floor. The table shook and she scrunched the feather of the quill up in her hand and launched it at the so-called Professor. The woman screeched in disgust and Fred could help but lean back in his seat and watch in amusement.
"How dare you!" Umbridge shouted, fire roaring in her eyes and she stalked around the front of her desk and stood glowering at Catina. "How dare you!" She repeated pointing at the girl.
Catina's nose twitched, her hands began to scratch at her trousers as she shook in fury. "This is barbaric!" She sneered, "there is no way that you can go around doing this."
Umbridge pointed her finger even closer to the girl's face. "I am a position of authority, I do what I like, you obey me. Otherwise I have no other choice than to assume that you are against the ways on the ministry. You can go to prison for that."
"I doubt that, darling," Catina scoffed and flipped her hair over her shoulders. "Get your finger out of my face otherwise I will remove it for you."
"You cannot touch me, child."
"Oh so, it's one rule for us 'children'," she used air quotations, "and one rule for you 'adults'?" She used air quotations again.
"What on earth do you mean, Miss Lennox?"
"Just yesterday I saw you drag, literally, drag a second year student by the ear for a small mistake of having his shirt untucked. So you can touch us but we can't touch you when you're being rude by pointing at us?" Catina sucked her teeth and glanced at Fred who was not afraid to show how impressed he was but was prepared to stand between them if it got nasty.
Professor Umbridge shook her head but did not move her finger, "you know nothing, young lady. Now sit back down and continue with your lines."
"No."
"How dare you!"
Catina had warned her. She had given the professor plenty of warning to move her finger but instead, she moved it closer. The girl growled and snapped her teeth at the woman and ultimately bit her finger. Umbridge cried out in pain and staggered back.
"Feral! Monster! Beast!" The woman shouted in fury, "get out! Get away from me you animal!"
"Gladly."
Catina ripped Fred up by his collar and dragged him out of the office with her and stormed down the corridor at a fast pace, her breathing ragged and deep. Stopping once she was well away from the office, Catina dropped her hold on Fred who rubbed his neck from where the shirt had scratched and she wiped her mouth, a little blood and saliva lying in her skin.
She paced back and forth as Fred leaned against the wall astounded by what had just taken place. Catina continued to grow and tug at her hair and eventually crouched down letting out a loud screech which, thankfully and somehow impressively, didn't wake any paintings not alert anyone such as Filch and Mrs Norris of their presence. Tumbling over like a small child she collapsed onto the floor with a deep sigh and laid sprawled out the cold wood cooling her fiery skin.
Fred sunk to the floor and just watched the girl. As much as he was beyond impressed by Catina he was slightly, and rather ashamed to admit this, intimidated by this new side of her. He had previously seen her stand up to George but she wasn't... growling and biting?
The girl thrashed around on the floor and let out a whine like a small child. "Gah! I hate that woman!"
"I can tell," Fred lightly laughed. He was still rather in shock by her outburst.
Catina rolled into her side to look at him, "I'm sorry you had to see that. I- I really don't know what came over me then, she just pushed my buttons."
"Don't apologise, someone needed to do it. Just, next time, don't bite her. We're going to now have to take you to Madam Pomfrey to check that you don't have rabies or a disease."
Catina snickered and shook her head, "we won't have to do that, darling. But I might need to wash my mouth out with soap, she tasted rank!"
"And how do you define her taste?"
"Like pickled eggs."
"Gross," Fred cringed and shuffled over to the girl. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
"Before the detention... you didn't look okay. I know that was my fault I shouldn't have pushed you to slide down the banister-"
Catina pressed her hand over his mouth, "I'm fine, I told you. Yeah, it was scary that I nearly fell but I didn't, did I? You stopped that from happening. So let's let bygones be bygones and let me go to bed."
Fred nodded and she peeled her hand from his mouth. He dipped his head and pressed a kiss to her lips and brushed her hair out of her face so that when he pulled away he could take a proper look into her eyes and make sure she wasn't lying. "Goodnight, Kitten." He whispered.
"Goodnight, Fred."
In the morning, rumours were already flying around that a student had bitten Umbridge and people were desperately trying to find out who it was. Catina was in the Slytherin common room not particularly feeling like going to Hogsmeade that weekend because she had visited it so my that other than getting some sweets and a couple of bottles of butterbeer to bring back with her, there wasn't much down there for her. Lulu had kindly offered to get them for her and allowed Catina to stay in the castle whilst she and Caspian went down to the village. Prosper didn't say anything but stayed with Catina and they curled up on the sofa playing a game of noughts and crosses.
"Lulu said you were out late last night," Prosper murmured as he put an 'x' in a square on the grid.
Catina nodded her head, "yeah I had detention with Umbridge."
Prosper nodded, "so you presumably know who so happened to bite the toad?" Catina flushed red and looked down onto her lap and the boy dropped his quill. He looked flabbergasted but also rather proud as he realised what she meant by not saying anything. The pair had become so accustomed to sharing a conversation without using actual words so he knew exactly what she was telling him. He raised his eyebrows to say "what on earth caused that?"
She showed him the back of her right hand where the words were fading on her skin. He shook his head and pulled her closer. He too thought it was utterly disgraceful that a woman like her would use such ancient methodology to punish students and that she was allowed to work in the school by recommendation and permission of the ministry.
Catina stood up and stretched and held out her hand for Prosper to hold. "I'm hungry." She told him and he followed her out of the common room. It was lunch time and despite the majority of third years and above being in the village, the Great Hall still looked rather full as they took their place at the Slytherin table to eat some lunch.
From the Gryffindor table Catina could feel eyes on her and she glanced up to see Ginny looking between her and Prosper. She looked puzzled as to why Catina was with the boy but didn't simply shrugged and went back to her food. Catina neither knew why Ginny wasn't in the village nor why she was confused about Prosper and her being friends when Catina did mention it back in the summer.
Prosper kept one arm around her waist as he age some sandwiches and Catina made no effort to remove it. She didn't see any problem with it, after all, he's basically her brother and they had done this since first year so why change now? That and the fact that if she did suddenly not want his hold he would question it and what exactly would she say to him. It wasn't like she and Fred were publicly together and she really wasn't prepared to answer all of the questions that would unfold because of it.
Still rather tired from her lack of sleep that night, she rested her head on his shoulders and shut her eyes once she was finished eating. Prosper continued to eat finding the spicy chicken sandwiches way too moorish and was rather content with eating as many as he could. He didn't mind Catina resting on him and brought his hand up her back to where the tips of her hair laid so that her could fiddle with some curls as he ate.
The large doors opened at the back of the hall and a few people entered clearly just returning from the village, Fred and George being amongst them as their laughter boomed above the chatter and bounced off of the stone walls. They bundled over to their house table and as they took a seat by their sister they both caught sight of Catina and Prosper but the two didn't see them. The twins shared a look together but didn't speak about it. Not yet anyway.
"Do you think they're together?" Ginny asked Fred and nodded towards the two Slytherin students.
"Nah," He said.
"They sure look like it."
"Why don't you focus on your own love life, Gin, we barely know the snake." George told her. "Who cares if she is with him? Because I certainly don't and neither should you two. Just because she may be temporarily living with us doesn't mean we have to get attached to her." He looked specifically at Fred.
"Of course not, Georgie, she's nothing to us." His twin said. "Absolutely nothing..."
