Chapter One: Kits

No... This can't be happening. Was all I could think as I stared at the pink device in my hand.

One hand was on my stomach, and the other holding the cursed object. Emotions swirled through me, making me lightheaded and dizzy. Suddenly I whirl around, emptying my stomach into the porcelain toilet bowl.

'I can't.... No one can know.' I think, getting up to brush my teeth.

It had started a few days ago. Every morning I found myself puking my guts up. I thought I was coming down with a stomach bug or something. Then I had gone to health class, where there was a lecture on the symptoms of pregnancy.

At first, it was a niggling doubt. One so small, I could ignore it. Then I was sick the next morning. I began to think on it, remembering the lingering ache in my- yeah, not going there.

I walked down the empty street, a streetlight flickering ever so slightly. I had to get home, me and Nelson had had a fight. My parents would ask questions, but I didn't care.
I let out a small shriek as I feel something latch onto my arm, spinning me around. Something is thrown over my head, and I struggle to breathe, my eyelids growing heavy.
~
I wake up in an alley, pain shooting through my lower areas, and small red marks on my bared chest. There is stuff on the ground, leaking out of me, pooling between my shaking legs. I grab my scattered clothing, knowing what happened, but not really registering it. A lone tear slipped down my face as I dress, quickly going home and slipping into my room via window.

I take a deep breath, holding back tears. Now that I know that there is something growing in me, it's like a wrecking ball hit me full swing. I stare into the mirror, and lift up my shirt to see faint hints of a bump. No matter what angle I turned, it was there. It wouldn't go away.

I was raped, and have a random bastards child growing inside me.

I jump as a rapid knocking rings through the silence of the bathroom.

"Paige? Sis? You good in there?"

I sigh. I dont want to deal with my brother right now.

"I'm fine Tony! I'll be out in a minute." I call back. I curse softly as my voice cracks. I can't go to school like this. My breakdown will hit any minute.

I grab the positive test and slip it in my hoodie pocket. I flush the toilet, and open the door.

I walk into the kitchen, grabbing some toast, that I don't really want. I nibble it, feeling faint nausea at the taste. I cringe as Tony grabs my arm, where the bastard grabbed me.

"C'mon sis! We're gonna be late!" He says. He is sixteen, but sometimes I swear he's ten.

I roll my eyes as I slip on my shoes. "I'm coming."

We hurry to the bus stop, where my friend Alan is. He lives down the street and I've known him forever. His father is cool too, owns a big business. The bus pulls up before we can start a conversation and I climb on reluctantly.

School isn't that far away and there aren't many kids who ride my bus, so we arrive early. We get off and hurry to the canteen, where Tony and his friends hang out. I look for my other friend, Dusk, but it seems she isn't here.

One of Alans friends comes up and starts talking to Tony, and suddenly I'm alone in the middle of the canteen. I see the woods behind the school. I pull my hood up, and walk casually around the back of the school, before making a break for the woods. I run, and run and run and run, until I collapse sobbing against a large boulder.

I don't know how long I lay against that boulder, staring up at the light filtering through the forest canopy with dead eyes. All I know is that I somehow have a baby fox on my chest.

"What do you want?" I ask it. It was three months old at most. It was pitch black, 'kinda like the night sky. ' I mused. It's paws faded into an earthy brown, as did the tips of its ears and tail.

It stared at me sadly, lifting its nose to the east. It scrambled off of my chest and staggered in the direction it had pointed.
I watch it go in curiosity. It stops and turns to face me, and whines.

It... Wants me to follow?

I stand and walk after the fox kit, and soon I smell a tangy metallic scent. I follow it and see blood on the ground.

There is a Fox lying in a pool of blood, a few lumps of fur curled next to it. It's chest rose slowly, as it wheezed in pain.

I kneel by it, not noticing the blood seeping through my pants. It looks at me with glazed eyes. Eyes which I've never seen on a fox. They were a bright, glowing gold, that got dimmer as the fox died slowly.

I tried to find the wound, and saw a bullet hole just above the foxes collarbone. Blood gushed out with every breath, and I knew the fox wouldn't make it.

"I'll look after your kits. Worry not. Rest in peace." My eyes widened. I was unable to control my body as I said that. The Fox looks at me in what I thought was respect, before the life faded from it's eyes, which had faded to black.

For the rest of the afternoon, I was using my hands, and a few sticks, to dig a hole, to bury the fox in. I gently set the fox in and pushed the dirt over it.

I walked over to the two lumps, which were beginning to move. They were kits, likely the firsts siblings. One was barely moving, and looked to be ready to give up.

The other was bigger than the others, likely a year or two, and was trying to stand, but it seemed a bone was broken.

I walked over to the weakest one. Only to shriek quietly and step back. It's eyes were gone, and it had blood pouring from the empty sockets. I watched as it died in front of me. The other also had a gash in its side, and when it stood, it toppled over with a pained yelp. The gash was infected, and the kits eyes glazed over as its breath became labored. Quickly I scooped it up, and held it as gently as possible, as the other kit, the only unharmed one, wriggled into my hoodie.

I ran through the woods, away from the school, and towards the town, where there was a emergency vet. I burst through the doors and held up the kit.

"Help!" I shout. I'm led to a room where the kit is taken and laid on a table, needles being pricked and scalpels being used. I'm pushed to the waiting room, where I sit anxiously.

The black kit wriggles out of my pocket and climbs up onto my shoulder. I hear something fall from my pocket, and bend over to look. I quickly scoop up the pink device and shove it back in my pocket.

It's several hours before a veterinarian comes up to me.

"You and your fox friend are lucky. He survived the surgery and because you hold no ownership over him, it's free of charge."

The woman smiled. "It was close, but he pulled through. And he's a real beauty once he's clean and not caked in blood."

I followed her back to a room, where the Fox kit lay sleeping. His fur was a snowy white, which faded to a smoky gray at his ears, paws and tail. The fox in my pocket jumped out into the small nest thingie that the white one laid on.

"Do you plan on keeping them? I'm assuming the mother is dead. They need someone to look after them."

I stare at the kits, and a surge of fierce protective instinct floods my veins. I see a golden energy flood out of me, and surround the kits, and settle into their fur.

The woman gasped. "Do you have heterochromia?" She asked.

I shook my head. "Not that I know of. Why?"

The woman stared as she explains. "Your eyes are already an abnormal color. No one has white eyes. But just now they glowed gold and had a purple ring."

That was weird. Especially since the black kit has startling violet eyes and the mother had bright golden eyes.

"Strange." I murmur, staring intently at the kits. The white one was waking, and his eyes slid open, locking with mine. His were bright gold, like his mothers.

Thank you.

I jump slightly. The kit nods.

"I'm keeping them." I say to the woman.

Your welcome. Do you have names?

"Okay. I'll go get the papers you need to sign." I nod distractedly, my attention focused on the fox I'm front of me.

I'm Cloud. That's my brother Terra.

I walk over to them. "My name's Paige Wright. It's nice to meet you Cloud, Terra. "

Soon the nurse came back with the papers.

"Just fill these out and your good to go." She said.

I filled out the papers, only using my information. These kits where mine not my parents.

I turned them in and motioned for Terra to climb into my pocket, and held Cloud in my arms gingerly. His foreleg had a hairline fracture, and the gash had been stitched and treated.

I hurry home, and find myself glad my mom was at work. I place the foxes on my bed.
"Terra. Can you stay with Cloud while I find something for you to eat?"

Terra just plops down next to Cloud. I chuckle, before going to see what kind of meat we had in the freezer.

Tony liked to hunt, and often brought home a variety of meat. I pulled out the wrapped rabbit meat as threw it in the microwave.

I dug around in the storage room, and found some blood labelled rabbit.

I go back, prepared the meat out it on a plate, and walk back to my room humming quietly.
"Here." I place the plate down in front of Terra and Cloud. The dug into it hungrily.

While they eat, I decide to shower and get rid of my ruined pants. I pad around the empty house, hair wet, with a too big hoodie on. I'm craving blueberries, so I open the fridge and dig around, growling when I found an empty container. I decided to settle for blackberries, and took the whole box to my room. Terra was snoozing, while, a snowy haired, golden eyed teenage boy sat naked in my bed.

I backed up, for some reason fear clawing my throat and likely shining in my glazed eyes. I felt phantom pains flash through me, and belatedly, I realized I was having a panic attack, and that it was making me relive my trauma.

"Paige!?" My head snapped up. The boy was crouched in front of me, arms extended as though to embrace me, and worry scrunched his features.

"Paige? Are you okay now?" His voice is deep, but not too deep and it held a husky undertone. It was filled with worry and confusion.

My voice is shaking. "Cloud?"

He nods. I swallow heavily.

"How are you a human? You were a fox just a moment ago."
