31)Surprise Party
"You were about to skid out on that last bend," Wilder informs me as he leans against his bike.
I shrug and take my helmet off in time to catch Travis crossing the finish line. The second he stops and jumps off, he kicks a cloud of dirt and gravel as he throws his helmet on the ground.
"This is bullshit! I just upgraded my shit yesterday," Travis vents, staring at his bike like it's his worst enemy.
Wild chuckles. "And yet, you still can't keep up. What the hell are we gonna do with you, T? We can't train you and help you race better."
"I don't need help." Travis glowers and grits his teeth. "I know bikes better than all of you. I know engines better than all of you. I shouldn't be having this fucking problem."
I roll my eyes at his temper tantrum. "Relax, master mechanic. You're just having an off day."
"Yeah." Wilder nods. "Just imagine you're making love to a beautiful chick and you'll forget you're even racing. Then you'll be able to cross that finish line before all of us."
I'm not sure if that's true but at least it might help him relax. Poor dude had a run-in with the Vipers a couple days ago and has been on edge ever since. Not that anything actually happened. He and the others on patrol chased them off before they got close to the borders. But still, it means they haven't given up.
It's the exact reason my uncle scheduled our initiations next weekend. Just as Wild predicted, we need to increase our numbers. All the current prospects are gonna get their patches and then it's on to recruiting new bodies. Of course, the attack on the barn contributed to our sudden promotion too. Uncle Rob said we handled ourselves like warriors, like Guardians. We earned our place in the club, and not a single Guardian alive doubts that.
Travis shakes his head. "Fuck imagining a chick, I'll just grab one tonight at Lexi's party. I need to drain my nuts before they fucking explode, and before next weekend for sure."
I feel his pain. I need to get Lexi alone soon before I lose my fucking mind, and her birthday party sounds like the perfect opportunity.
"Speaking of which." Wild looks at his phone. "We should probably head back. I gotta clean up before tonight."
"You ain't the only one." I nod, slipping on my helmet, and get a quick whiff of the stank coming from under my arms.
The guys load up and we peel out of Rock-a-Billy's. For being a shutdown track that's falling apart board by board, it's the best place to race. Not a soul for miles. But that also means the drive back is a little long, and if I want to jump in the shower before tonight, we got to go now.
When I get home I find the apartment dark and empty. Mom's working another extra shift, even after I told her she didn't need to. She's so damn worried about money but refuses to accept a dime from me.
Stubborn ass.
Lex is still out too. She's been helping everyone set up for the party at her place. As much as I wasn't in the mood for a fucking party this week, I'm going for her. At least she'll be the center of attention and not me, which will make it bearable. That and the idea of her dancing with me most of the night. No matter how many people want her time tonight, I'm keeping her close as fucking possible. Besides needing her body pressed against me, this Viper stuff has me stressed and her house is outside the west boundaries. It's an easy target if Victor catches word that we'll be there.
As I walk to the bathroom, my cell goes off in my pocket. I check the screen and instantly groan.
Alexis: Think this works for tonight?
Below her text is a picture of her in a reddish-brown suede dress. The material clings to every curve of her body and stops at the top of her thighs. To make matters worse, the dress just barely keeps her tits from spilling out and there's a slit on the side that travels up to her waist.
Fuck me.
Jace: I think I just busted a nut.
Alexis: I'll take that as a yes then. 😘
Jace: You're playing with fire, baby. I can only take so much before I bend you over and fuck you senseless.
Alexis: Is that a promise?
My head falls back with another tortured sound.
She's fucking killing me. We both know she's not ready to cross that line. Teasing and touching is one thing, but there's no way in hell she's going to give me all of her until I fess up. It's just another reason to look forward to next weekend. I'll do my walk, get patched, and give Lexi what she wants. What happens from there will be in her hands, and as fucking terrifying as that is, I gotta trust my girl won't runoff.
I shed my clothes and text Lexi back.
Jace: Fucking tease.
Alexis: lol Be home soon to get ready. 😘
Shaking my head, I toss my phone on the counter and slip off my last article of clothing, my boxers. My dick springs free, already painfully standing at attention thanks to Lexi's picture. After setting the water to steaming levels and stepping in, I wrap a hand around my swollen shaft.
There's no way I'll make it tonight if I don't get some kind of relief.
Fucking my fist isn't close to what I need but it's all I got right now. I close my eyes and the first thing I see is Lexi in that tiny fitted dress. I imagine fulfilling my promise and bending her sweet ads over, sliding into the tightest fucking pussy I've ever known. The memory of how she felt around my fingers invades my fantasies, reminding me of the way she clenched and coated my skin. Her heavy panting and moans fill my ears.
With each stroke, I imagine all the things I want to do to her, all the ways I want to take her. I picture Lexi's perfect lips wrapping around me as her bright hazel eyes look up at me. She teased about letting me fuck her pretty mouth the other night and I'll be damned if that doesn't sound like a gift from god.
Each day she's getting more confident, teasing me like I teaser her. Even the words she whispers when no one's around could give me a run for my money in the dirty talking department. And I'm loving every bit of it. I'm rubbing off on her, corrupting those sweet thoughts and there's not a guilty bone in my body. Especially while I beat my dick to the thought of her.
Resting my head against the shower wall, I let the hot water pelt my back while I pick up the pace. My hand blurs with the movement, my mind racing with all the possibilities. Next weekend Lexi will know everything, she'll be mine, and I'll be free to show her just how hot I burn for her.
"Jace?" Lexi's voice rings out in the apartment and it's like a switch is hit.
Just hearing her voice, knowing she's this close while I beat off, it sends me over the edge. That and imagining her saying my name as she comes on my cock. It's the perfect combination. A low growl tears from my chest as my dick violently jerks and I release on the shower tile.
Initiation can't come soon enough.
The pounding music can be heard from down the street. The closer we get, the more we see evidence of a party. We pass parked vehicles lining the street, bumper to bumper until my once quiet and empty house comes into view and Jace slows down. The people in my front yard all turn and watch as we park the bike in the driveway next to the others, each one drinking or smoking as the bob to the bass blasting music.
"You ready, birthday girl?" Jace asks as he helps me off his bike, picking me up by my hips before setting me on my feet.
I bite back a grin and nod, secretly hoping he won't hate the surprise that's awaiting him inside. Josie and Kade didn't give me all the details but they both seemed pretty proud of themselves while setting up.
Jace drapes an arm around my shoulder and leads the way. With each step we take towards the front door, my once quiet house shakes in time to the beat, becoming its own pulsating organ. When Jace pushes the door open we're hit with the force of the party. Purple and black streamers hang from wall to wall, balloons litter the floor with a few pinned to the wall in the precise locations Ava deemed necessary. A sea of red solo cups and bodies fill the main hall, spilling into both the living room and kitchen. It's complete pandemonium. People are dancing, eating, drinking, smoking, and making out, among other things of course.
Jace pulls me closer and tries to steer us towards the living room but I have to stick to the plan.
Getting on my tiptoes, I shout over the music. "Kitchen!"
He nods and changes course, taking a sharp left. When we finally reach our destination, Jace is too busy trying to make us a path that he doesn't see our conjoined group of friends gathered around the kitchen island. But as if keeping watch, Josie spots us instantly and quickly gets everyone's attention. Once ready, she gives me a thumbs up and I tap Jace on the arm. When he turns to me, I nod towards the goofy smiles shining back at us and he looks over.
Above their heads is a banner that reads "Happy Birthday Lexi" but there's a large section at the end that's covered up. Josie tugs on a string and the cover falls away revealing the words "And Jace".
"Happy Birthday!" they all scream at the tops of their lungs, easily drowning out the music while Wilder and Marcel blow party horns.
My face lights up as my attention turns to Jace.
I know he didn't want a party, he's said it more than once throughout the week. But despite making this known, a wide smile takes up most of his face, his eyes glimmering with appreciation. Taking my hand, he pulls me through the remaining space between us and them. His eyebrows shoot up high as he's surprised for the second time, noticing the twin two-tier cakes sitting on the counter in front of our friends. They're almost identical despite the purple and pink icing on one, and the black and blue icing on the other.
"Surprised?" Josie yells as she scrambles across the counter on her hands and knees to reach us. She pulls both of us in for a group hug before Kade can snatch her up.
"Settle down, party animal," he shouts to her with a grin.
"Yeah." Jace nods, answering her question. "Very surprised." The look on his face softens as he takes in the pleased looks of those he cares about. "Thank you, guys. Seriously."
"HA!" Wilder laughs and points a finger in Travis's face. "Told you he'd like it! Do I know my boy or what?"
Travis rolls his eyes but laughs good-naturedly.
"Happy birthday, bro. Again," Wilder says as he walks over to give Jace one of those bro hugs.
Travis, Kade, and Josie walk around to do the same while I'm greeted by three other happy faces.
Marcel wraps me in a bear hug and lifts me into the air. "Happy Birthday, baby sis."
I manage to thank him despite feeling like I'm being crushed by a python. When he sets me down, Ava blows a party horn in my face and smiles.
"Like the cake?" She asks nodding to the sweet purple and pink monster on the table.
I nod repeatedly. "Yes! It looks awesome!"
"Tastes even better," Caleb deeply says from behind Ava with a grin.
I know Caleb said he was coming tonight, but after he ditched the decoration session earlier today, I'm a little surprised he showed. I'm happy he did but a small part of me wasn't expecting it.
"Well, I gotta get back to the DJ station. The playlist I left running is about to end," Marcel says before turning to Ava. "Mind cutting me a piece of cake? I wanna get my groove on while I get my grub on."
Ava nods and walks back around the counter to help him out, leaving me and Caleb in some weird bubble.
Caleb's dark green eyes hold mine, an unknown emotion flashing in his gaze. I find myself stepping in Jace's direction unintentionally. Jace doesn't notice though, not while his friends are surrounding him with joyous birthday shenanigans.
With determination written across his face, Caleb steps closer and pulls me in for a hug. Only this hug isn't like the millions we've shared before. His hands lightly caress my back as his arms tighten around me.
"Save me a dance later?" He whispers in my ear, his voice sounding thick and gravelly.
What the actual fuck is going on?
Stunned, I pull away despite his lingering hold and nod. "Um...sure?"
He licks his lips. "I wanna talk to you later too." His eyes briefly flick to the rowdiness behind me. "Alone, if that's cool."
This sounds like a bad idea. I don't know what he wants to talk about but the way he says it makes my stomach twist into a million knots.
Luckily, I'm saved from having to answer when Jace throws his arm around my shoulders again, laughing along with the guys. The heated look in Caleb's eyes fades away. Shaking his head, he offers a small smile before taking a long pull from a whiskey bottle and walking away.
Weird.
We all grab drinks and nibble on some cake. No one risks eating too much, not when a stomach full of food means it'll be that much harder to feel the alcohol. Normally, I'd worry about who's going to be the designated driver but since it's my house, I know we can crash after things die down. I'll just have to confiscate everyone's keys sooner or later.
After a little while, I'm starting to feel the effects of the alcohol. My body feels light and I can't hold still, constantly flowing to the music thumping through the house while Jace and Wilder play beer pong. Ava says she has to go do something and leaves the room while Jo dances beside me. Eventually, we both start bumping hips and singing along to the music like we're a small girl band.
"Boom!" Wilder shouts, sinking his last shout and throwing his hands in the air. "Drink up, brother!"
Jace smiles and shakes his head before picking up the last cup and downing it. Once empty, he slams the cup on the table. "You gotta be cheating!"
Wilder scoffs, covering his heart with his hand. "How dare you question my skills!"
Kade saddles up next to Jace and pops his collar. "Let me handle this joker. I'll put him in his place."
Wild shoots him a challenging grin.
Jace waves at the table. "Have at it. I got better shit to do."
"Like get laid." Travis laughs leaning against the wall while some girl dances on him.
Jace ignores him, his eyes finding me and darkening as a wolfish smirk takes hold of his full lips. Leaving the guys to continue their games, he stalks towards me. A shiver runs down my spine and I bite my lip nearly bouncing with excitement.
Yes, this is what I've been waiting for.
Ignoring my dancing partner beside me, Jace reaches us and grabs hold of my waist pulling me against him. In the blink of an eye, his lips are on mine. I melt against him, like putty in his hands as his mouth quickly moves to my neck.
From over his shoulder, I notice a pair of angry emerald eyes watching us.
Caleb.
He takes a swig from his drink while I have to keep from moaning as Jace nips my earlobe. I close my eyes, escaping the judgment and enjoying the feel of Jace's lips.
Pulling away, Jace pins me with those ocean blue eyes. "Wanna dance, baby?"
"Hell, yeah." I nod, trying to reign in my enthusiasm.
With a crooked smile, Jace takes my hand and leads me away with no sign of Caleb anywhere nearby. The last thing I hear before we leave the kitchen is Josie whining, "Kade, I wanna dance too!"
His chuckle follows. "Soon, babe. Soon."
Jace pushes through the crowd until we reach the living room. Marcel immediately spots us and points our way with a smile while he bops along to the music.
Adjusting his headphones, Marcel speaks over a small mic attached to his laptop. "Ladies and gents, the birthday duo has arrived!"
With that, he presses a button, and the song changes to something with a booming bass drop that makes me want to shake my ass. The crowd goes wild with shouts of approval and the energy kicks up to another level.
Clearing a path through the heavily gyrating bodies, Jace finds us a spot near the back wall. He puts his chest to my back and grabs onto my hips as I begin to move to the beat. He follows my lead, moving when I move, never breaking contact. After several songs, it feels like it's just us in the room. Everyone's disappeared and all I feel is his body against mine, smell his heady cologne, and hear his breathing in my ear. All of it consuming me and sending fire through my body.
But my fire is cooled when I'm tapped on the shoulder. Both Jace and I jerk our heads to see Ava standing beside us with a guilty look on her face.
"Sorry to cut in," She apologizes to Jace before her eyes find mine. "All the guestrooms are taken and I...um...I could really use some privacy. Think I could use your room?"
I love Ava but I will literally give her anything right now to be left alone with Jace.
"Yeah, here." I dig in my bra for the key I used to lock up my room-thank god for the original doors in this house-and hand it to her. "Have fun!"
She smiles wide and nods before darting off.
"Thank god." Jace huffs, his grip tightening on me once again.
Couldn't agree more.
"Are you having a good time, sweetheart?" he whispers in my ear.
I pull my hair to one side so I can see him better. "Yes. You?"
"Can't you tell?" He presses against my ass to show just how much he's enjoying our dance.
Not that he needed to press any harder. The second we started dancing I could feel his excitement against my backside.
"Looks like you're in a tough bind there." I giggle as I turn around to face him. "Can't very well get your rocks off in the middle of a dance floor."
"Says who?" he asks with a devilish smile.
Pulling me flush against him, he grabs my hand and runs it between our bodies until I can feel his length against the palm of my hand.
"Don't you wanna, baby?" he rasps.
Quickly, I look around to see if anyone notices. They don't. Everyone is in their own little world with several other couples getting close, just barely hidden by the smoke and shadows.
With my breathing speeding up, I slowly rub my hand against his hard-on, making him hiss from the contact.
"You're right...this is a bad idea," he says, though he doesn't move to stop me.
Licking my lips, I look up into his eyes. "Why's it a bad idea?"
"Cause now I really am gonna have to fuck you in front of everyone."
Heat instantly pulls between my legs.
"You're bad," I giggle as he dips his head down and places a kiss on my neck.
"You have no idea, baby."
Kissing on my neck some more, he shifts us so that his leg is between my legs as we sway and grind to the music. The friction of us grinding sends tingles of pleasure through my body, making me shake in the process. Jace softly nips my neck, making a moan escape my mouth despite my best efforts.
"You doing okay, sweetheart?" Jace chuckles in my ear.
Panting, I nod my head. "You're playing dirty, and someones gonna notice.
"Let them," he growls as he wraps around to grab a handful of my ass and backs me against the wall.
His head dips down again but instead of latching onto my neck, he captures my mouth. I wrap my hands around his head and dive my fingers into his thick brown locks, mewling once his tongue finds mine. The taste of him fills my head making me dizzy with lust and alcohol.
"Fuck, why'd you have to wear this dress?" Jace groans and bites my bottom lip before capturing it again with his soft lips, soothing the sting.
"I thought you liked it?" I ask between kisses.
He grunts and hitches my leg over his hip, making me happy I chose a dress with a slit in the side otherwise my new dress would be ripping right now.
"I fucking love it," Jace murmurs against my lips. "It looks like it was painted on your tight little body, and that's the problem." He grinds his erection against the spot of my body aching for him the most. "I've already had to pump one out after that damn picture you sent me and fucking my fist again isn't gonna cut it this time."
Oh. My. God.
I swear I stop breathing. His words are so dirty and yet it does delicious things to my body.
"We should find a room then." I pant, already feeling tingles shoot to my nerve endings at just the thought.
Jace leans back and cups my chin, forcing me to look him in the eyes as he silently asks if I'm for real.
I gulp and nod. Less than a second later, Jace throws me over his shoulder. A few people stare, some laughing while others roll their eyes. But Jace doesn't pay them any mind as he shoves through the living room and the hall, before heading up the stairs.
"Jace!" I shout between fits of giggles. "We can't go to my room, Ava's in there!"
His one-track mind ignores me completely, keeping on his chosen path. When I try to wiggle, he slaps my ass, making me squeal and laugh. His deep chuckle joins in, jostling my body before he bursts through my bedroom door. Only once in the pitch-black room, his entire body freezes.
"What the hell!" Ava's voice shrieks.
"Damn," Jace whispers, keeping me trapped on his shoulder. "Good for you two."
I try to look around but all I can see is Jace's back. "What? What's going on?"
Jace slides me down the front of him and lightly sets my feet on the floor. I whip around, curious to see who Ava's scored tonight.
What...the...fuck?
What I find surprises the hell out of me. I tilt my head to the side as my eyebrows pull together, my mind trying to decipher the scene in front of me. It's like looking at an abstract painting. I can get an idea of what's going on but I need the artist to fully explain it to me.
Sitting under the covers of my bed with both their shirts off is Ava and Caleb. Ava's lipstick is smeared and hickeys line her tan neck. Caleb looks just as disheveled, his blonde strands sticking up like they've been mused by lustful hands. The lighting from the hall puts a spotlight on them, highlighting their shocked, bloodshot eyes staring back at me.
"How...what..." I can't find the words.
Why didn't they tell me? I'm their friend. I wouldn't have cared if they were seeing each other. Shit, if they're happy, I'm happy. But...why hide it?
"Lex," Caleb's breathy voice calls as he shifts away from Ava. "It's not what it looks like!"
"Wow," Jace whispers under his breath incredulously.
"What the fuck, Caleb?" Ava shouts, her face twisting with pain and anger as she stares wide at him. "Seriously?"
He looks at her and winces. "A...you know..."
"Fuck this!" She shoves him and crawls out of the bed. Picking up her shirt from the floor, she pulls it over her head and glares at all of us. "Fuck all of you!"
She storms out of the room, leaving us in silence.
My attention falls on Caleb who looks at me with guilt eyes. I wait for him to do something but he doesn't budge.
"Caleb!" I throw my arm towards the door. "Go to her!"
He runs his hands down his face and sighs.
"He can't," Jace says darkly. "She's not the one he's worried about right now."
Caleb looks up at Jace with a menacing look but one thing's clear. Jace isn't wrong. Caleb has no intention of chasing her down.
"Wow!" I repeat Jace's earlier word of disbelief before running out the door to track down my best friend.
Shooting down the stairs, I catch a glimpse of Ava's dark hair as she disappears out the front door. I shove everyone out of my way and pick up speed. When I make it outside, I see her stomping down the road and rush to catch up.
"Ava!"
She flips her hair over her shoulder but keeps going.
"Ava, stop!" I shout again. "Please!"
She does, thankfully, but she doesn't turn around. I catch up to her, trying to catch my breath while confronting the back of her head.
"Please, just talk to me. What the hell's going on, A?"
She whips around, her warm brown eyes glaring at me like I'm the one who just betrayed her.
"You don't get it! You never do, Lex!" She shouts, her small frame shaking with anger. "The guy I told you about yesterday, the one I've been crazy over for years, it's Caleb!"
Oh...damn.
"Okay." I nod trying to make sense of this. "Things looked like they were going good in there though...you know." I shrug. "Before we interrupted."
"But he's not the one coming after me. Is he?"
No. Fucking idiot.
"He doesn't want me." Ava shakes her head and a tear falls down her cheek. "He's never wanted me. The only reason tonight even happened is because he's been drinking himself fucking silly all night. I shouldn't have done it. I shouldn't have talked him into going up there with me but...fuck!" Her head falls back as she curses the sky above. "I just wanted to know what it felt like to have him think of me like that. I thought maybe afterward...maybe he'd feel differently. Maybe I'd luck out and he'd finally see me." She drops her head. Her teary eyes overflow with emotion. "But he'll never look at me the way he looks at you."
Me?
"I-I don't understand." I step closer, dying to make her feel better. "Me? W-What are you talking about?"
Ava's lip twists with disdain before her eyes flick to something behind me. "Go ahead, Caleb. Tell her." She steps back. "Fucking tell her how much you love her!"
I look over my shoulder to see Caleb standing behind me, with Jace not far behind. When I look back around, Ava's already running down the road and jumping into her car.
"Caleb." With Ava gone, I turn to face him. "What's going on?"
Guilt washes over his face, like a kid that has to confess to breaking a window with his baseball.
He runs his hands through his hair and sighs but manages to hold eye contact. "She's right."
"About what?" I ask, still not getting it. Thank you very much alcohol.
Caleb steps forward and behind Jace tenses, his hands balling into fists at his side. I try to reassure Jace with the look in my eyes but all he's focussed on is Caleb's back.
"I have feelings for you, Lex." Caleb slowly says, his voice just barely over a whisper. "I'm in love with you. Have been since we were kids."
My body freezes and the sound of imaginary glass shattering fills my head.
There's the broken window.
Or more like, there's our friendship, fracturing and breaking piece by piece.
"Say something," Caleb pleads.
The agony on his face rips at me. I try to dig around in the deepest depths of my feelings but all I can find is friendship. Looking at Caleb, all I see is my friend. The guy that's been there for me countless times but...maybe he was doing that for different reasons than I thought.
It's never once crossed my mind that Caleb felt more than I did. He's sweet, but he's sweet with everyone. That's who he is. My friend. Looking at him is like looking at Marcel. He's a big piece of my life, a part of me, but not in that way.
"Caleb...I-I don't feel the same way."
Caleb's face drops while Jace relaxes behind him.
"Think about it, Lex. I've always been there for you." Caleb throws his hand behind him. "Even when that asshole broke your heart." He slaps his chest, his face twisting with grief and anger. "I was the one to pick up the pieces! It was my shoulder you cried on! It was me who made you laugh, who cheered you up! I was there for you!"
A sharp pain strikes me in the chest and my eyes water.
"Yes, as a friend, Caleb." His lip curls back, so I try again. "I appreciate everything you've ever done for me. I love you, as a friend. You mean so much to me. You. Ava. Marcel. You guys are my family. It kills me to know I'm hurting you but...I can't lie to you. You're gonna find someone better than me. Someone who loves you the way you love them, but it's not me."
A sneer pulls at his face. Wrinkling his nose, Caleb's head whips back.
He jabs a finger in Jace's direction. "This is all your fucking fault!"
Jace's lips thin as he clenches his jaw. "Don't start your shit, Walker."
"No!" Caleb barks and steps towards him with clenched fists. "If you hadn't shown up, this would've never happened. You fuck everything up!"
"Back down, Caleb. I'm not above kicking your ass right now. I get you're pissed, hurt, all of that, but now is not the time to lose your cool." Jace watches him carefully, his voice soft but stern.
"Aye, what's going on?"
The three of us look back at the house to see Kade, Wilder, and Travis walking out the front door. It's like they could smell a fight, and right now I'm really hoping that's a good thing.
Please, guys, come break this up. End it before it gets out of control.
Caleb sizes up our newly added company. He's not stupid, even if he does stupid things sometimes. He has to know it would be a bad idea to try and take on Jace right now or ever, hopefully. I don't want to see them fight. It would kill me to see either of them get hurt, especially if they do it to each other.
As if coming to the same realization, Caleb steps away, making a move to cross the street where his truck is. But before he does, his forest green eyes fall on me. "Just think about it, Lex. Don't commit to him before you at least give me another thought."
Jace grunts his irritation and Caleb walks off. Once he's in his truck, I rush over to Jace's side and bury my face in his chest as tears fall from my eyes and dampen his shirt.
"It's alright, baby," Jace coos in my ear, his strong hands holding me close to him. "Everything's gonna be okay."
